Re: [wdvltalk] Wordpress or do you know of a better blog

2006-01-19 Thread Amrit Hallan
Foall my blogs I use WordPress. Now it even has a good collection of
blog themes. I started with Blogger, switched to MovableType and
eventually settled down with Wordpress. Now I can even design my own
themes with WordPress. For me the best thing is that it has been written
with PHP.

Re: [wdvltalk] Question about image

2005-11-15 Thread Amrit Hallan

First the simple stuff:

You can close the newly opened window by simply using this code:

X

(you wanted an X)

Now, the second part is a bit complicated. You'll need to get the size
of the image (either from the inventory or programmatically), and then
use that info as parameters to the window.open() function. I did it some
time back and if I'm on the right track, let me know and I'll find that
page and send the code to you.

I have a thumbnail on the main screen and when you click on the img. Opens up a

All is OK. Now the question:

I would like to open a window the size of the new enlarged img. And have an X, or something, that you can click and close the page.

This should be different that going all the way to the left corner and do back

Re: [wdvltalk] PHP question

2005-11-11 Thread Amrit Hallan
Ok, this is generally what I do if I have to work on a new website
involving MySQL database:

I get the password to the control panel from my client. The link in most
of the cases is www.domain.com/cpanel, but it can be different too --
hardly matters. Once I'm logged in, I click on an icon that says
something like "MySQL Databases". Once I click on that, I reach a
section where I can create a database. After creating the database I
create a user name with the password, and then assign that user name to
the database. I create my tables on my PC using MySQL-Front, and then
export them into an SQL file, which I upload using phpmyadmin.

Then from within the program, how you can connect to the database, you
may find this link useful:
http://www.aboutwebdesigning.com/2005/10/10/programmatically-deciding-which-database-to-connect-in-php
(copy/paste if it appears broken).

Another thing: create a file phpinfo.php with just this thing:

Upload it and run it. It'll tell you what sort of database you have
running on the server.

If you are not doing some big database thing such as physically putting

is generally used with PHP-run websites) using phpmyadmin. This link you

[wdvltalk] Installing ASP, JSP, CF

Re: [wdvltalk] php and checkboxes

2005-05-06 Thread Amrit Hallan
Hi Matt.
Every recipe must be having a unique recipe ID (auto incremented) in
your database table. So when you generate a list of recepies with the
accompanying check boxes you can do like this:

$result=mysql_query("select recipe_id, recipe_name from recipes");
echo "";
while($row=mysql_fetch_row($result))
{
   echo $row[1] . " ";
}
echo "";
echo "";
?>

And then in the "selected_recipes.php" file you can use the foreach()
loop to know which are the checkbox fields like:

 $value)
{
   $field=explode("_", $key);
   if($field[0]=="check")
   {
   // store the value
   }
}
?>

Deb, Peter, thanks for replying.
Peter, cost is not an issue (for the first time in my life!) because the

I would like to know another thing...if I plan to run Dreamweaver on

Thanks.

Thank you everybody...I'll check out all the links. Right now I'm using just
a text file (EditPad Lite) to keep track of my projects. Previously I was

[wdvltalk] Managing different projects

2005-04-02 Thread Amrit Hallan
Off late I've been getting many projects simultaneously. Keeping track of
them and their projects' status is becoming quite confusing. Is there some
online tool that can help me manage projects, clients and their contacts,

Thanks.

Re: [wdvltalk] How is this done?

2005-02-25 Thread Amrit Hallan
Thank you Sheila and Bj.

This is how it worked. I first connected to my server using putty.exe. Then
from there I gave sftp [EMAIL PROTECTED] command. It connected. Then I went
to the appropriate folder, found the files where all the PHP files were
stored, and gave the get *.php command.

Then I used my AceFTP program to connect to my server and download the files
from there to my PC. It worked!

Thank you, thank you :-).

Re: [wdvltalk] Next? [ Using SSH ]

2005-02-15 Thread Amrit Hallan
Even I'm puzzled why I'm being asked to access the server using SSH --
unnecessarily complicating things. I'm more concerned about going through
their php files and giving my feedback and even see how well-defined is
their mysql database. I understand they are just trying to intimidate me
with my lack of experience in such thing :-). Till now I have used FTP to
manage files and host-supported control panel to manage MySQL databases. Can
this be done with some other tool?

Thanks.

Hi Stephen.

Thanks a lot for the commands. Actually my client wants me to check the
following:

[o] The database
[o] The program files

I would like to download the files from this server to my computer, and then
upload them later. Do I do this with putty.exe or there is some other
software for it?

Thanks.

Subject: Re: [wdvltalk] Next? [ Using SSH ]

What's the object you're trying to achieve using SSH?

 Just a brief definition, to make sure we're on the same page: SSH
stands for Secure Shell and is a method of logging into a remote
machine to execute commands (it's a protocol, as well, if we want to
get nitpicky).

In essence, SSH allows you to execute any shell command you could
execute on a local *nix install on a remote machine (limited, of
course by your level of permission). It's fairly similar to a windows
command prompt in intent, but much more full featured (and thusly can
be somewhat confusing).

So... that brings us back to the main question: what are you trying to
achieve?

If you're merely attempting to securely transfer files, FileZilla
handles SFTP well enough (though, you have to create a site in the
site manager to get the SFTP option), I'm sure others can recommend
other clients.

The most common things you might have to SSH into a box for would be
CHMODing permissions and CHOWNing services... but as I said, you can
essentially do anything the machine is capable of from an SSH shell.

Common commands include:

ls (list files / directories in the current directory)
cd (change directory, modified by the path to the file, or keyphrase)
  e.g. cd .. or cd /home/user/amrit or cd foo/bar, etc...
pwd (print working directory, shows you where you are in the filesystem)
mv (copies a file or moves it)
rmv (unlinks [deletes] a file)
rmdir (removes a directory)
man [command] (shows help manual entry for given comand)
vi [file] (text editor)
pico [file] (another text editor]

here's a fairly authoritative list of the core *nix comands:

http://www.ss64.com/bash/

beyond that, you'll need to specify a particular task you're trying to
achieve, I believe.

hth,
Stephen

2005-02-11 Thread Amrit Hallan
Hi Stephen.

Thank you for the link. Downloaded it, installed it, the same error :-(. I
have double checked the IP address. Could there be some other problem? Can I
send you the IP address offline so that you can check the connection at your
end?

Thanks.

[wdvltalk] [wdvltalk]Further [ Using SSH ]

2005-02-11 Thread Amrit Hallan
Hi.

I downloaded PUTTY.exe. When I try to open/connect using an IP address I get
the following error:

Network error: Connection reset by peer

whereas it should ask for login and password.

I have tried it by changing the "Keepalives" value but nothing happens.

I'm using a DSL connection. First I tried from my laptop that is connected
to the PC that is connected to the Internet. Didn't work. Then I tried
directly from the PC. Didn't work. Same error again and again.

How do I get this connected? Or is there some other tool?

Thanks.

Frankly speaking, I have no idea. This is going to be a learning experience.
Although most of my work will be PHP programming, the client wants me to
check an existing software that installed on this server. I'll try to figure
out, and if I can't, well, I can always ask here.

Thank you for your help.

Re: RE:[wdvltalk] blog description edit problem

2005-02-02 Thread Amrit Hallan
I would suggest you shift to WordPress [ http://www.wordpress.org ]. I
recently started using it. It's very light and the best thing is, it is
written in PHP. You can import your Blogger entries too. Here, recently I
imported http://www.website-content-writer.com from Blogger to Wordpress. It
took me some time (the entire Saturday evening) but the trouble was from my
intellectual side :-).

Re: [wdvltalk] Fraud or over reaction?

2005-01-15 Thread Amrit Hallan
My take is that there are thousands of websites on the Internet. Someone can
tell even me that I have lifted my design from someone else's website for
that matter. Unless it is a total, pixel-by-pixel lift, I don't think it is
a big issue. And what for many people who buy the same template from let's
say, http://www.templatemonster.com/? A client of mine wants me to purchase
a PHPNuke template from there and many people must have bought the same
template. I think this guy is over-reacting and needlessly harassing that
contractor.

Re: [wdvltalk] OFF TOPIC: Advertising / Afilliates

2005-01-12 Thread Amrit Hallan
Hi Todd.

As far as I know, big companies (websites that get more than million
visitors per day) hire companies that manage their advertisers. I recently
did a website [http://www.itindex.net] and I know that my clients charged a
yearly fee from the advertiser. You have to be specific about what sort of
visitors will come to your website. If you're targeting a very narrow,
focused group, you can charge more.

[wdvltalk] MySQL/PHP date

2004-06-03 Thread Amrit Hallan
I created a date field in an already existing MySQL table with
ALTER TABLE table_name ADD COLUMN session_date DATE;
Then I inserted today's date into this column with

$query="insert into table_name (group_id, session_date) values (1, " .
date("m-d-Y", time()) . ")";
$result=mysq_query($query);
?>

but when I check the value of session_date, it displays -00-00.
How do I enter the correct date into this field?
Thanks.

[wdvltalk] OT - BIOS Problem

2004-05-31 Thread Amrit Hallan
My LAN card suddenly started acting weird and the person who maintains
my computer said there might be a virus in the BIOS. Now he wants to
change the entire mother board along with other things. I would
appreciate if someone could tell me:

[1] Can't BIOS be changed without changing the entire mother board?
[2] If the BIOS has been affected, shouldn't the entire computer act
weird instead of just the LAN card.

[3] Since he has taken the computer to his workshop, he called and said
changing the motherboard is the only option because the computer is
neither booting from the floppy nor from the CD [ when he took away the
computer, everything was working ok but the LAN card ], but when I
assured him that I'd get the whole computer updated in fifteen days but
right now I need it to finish my current work, he immediately said he'd
install it tomorrow so that I can finish my work.

Hence,
[4] Should I change my maintenance guy?
Thanks.

[wdvltalk] Re: PHP: 404 error handling

2004-04-23 Thread Amrit Hallan
Finally, this code did the trick for me:

Error, not running as Apache module";}
// get name of the requested page
$request = rawurldecode($REQUEST_URI);
if(get_cfg_var('magic_quotes_gpc')) $request = stripslashes($request);
// check that this is not called directly
if ($request == $PHP_SELF) {
 echo "This page should not be called directly";
 exit;}
$req = htmlspecialchars ($request);
echo $req . "";
printf('%512s', ' ');
?>
It shows the name of the file that generated the 404 error.

No error message. I have even tried print($_SERVER['DIRECT_URL']; and it
returned 0.

print $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; returns /redirect.php whereas I need to
know the name of the file that was not found.

Thanks.

Neither $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] works nor $_SERVER['REDIRECT_URL']

that's the right syntax Amrit, something else must be wrong as this
will work to get a text string output:
$CurrentPage = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
print($CurrentPage);
Not getting any errors at all? Got the semicolon in there and all
that obvious stuff? Anyone would need more code to begin even taking
a guess then.

How can I extract this data and display/process it
according to the requirement?

I'll also be interested in any answers. I've finally got to grips with the
Amazon developer interface and all the searches etc come back like this.
For now, I've just written some php that reads the page and extracts the
variables by brute force - use strpos() to find start of " and
start of "", calculate from this the offset and length of the
value, and get it with a call to substr().
There is certainly a library for parsing XML in php ('expat') that someone
has written, but you'd need sysadmin access to the server (or a very helpful
ISP) to install it

[wdvltalk] Re: PHP: Selecting N number of records

2004-04-04 Thread Amrit Hallan
Thank you Bj :-). I think I have got the starter.

Bj wrote:

When I show the result of a query, the entire result
comes on the page, even if there are 100s of
returned rows. How can I show the result page-wise
(for example, the footer of Google where you see
1 2 3 4 5 ...Next)?

The way I do it is by using mysql_data_seek() and a variable $Start to keep
track of where I am in the results. Mysql_data_seek(result, row number)
sets a mysql pointer to the specified row number in the result so that's the
next one you fetch with mysql_fetch_array().
If $Start is not defined, set to 0
Execute the query
Seek to row '$Start'
Fetch rows and display them until you have displayed 20, or reached the end
of the results
If not at the end, add 20 to $Start and give the user a "Next" link to click
that will call the page again, passing the current value of '$Start' in a
querystring
You can make this more complicated, as much as you like. Mysql_num_rows
will tell you how many rows are in the query, so you can have links like
Google for page 1, 2, 3... each with a different start number. You can also
see if 'start - 20' is greater than 0 and if so, you can have a "Back" or
"Prev" link.
I could show you my code of course, but then I'd have to kill you. I think
you are more than bright enough to work it out from this! :-)
Bj

[wdvltalk] Sites not accessible

2004-03-24 Thread Amrit Hallan
Two things have been happening ever since I've started using the DSL
connection. I access the Internet in two ways: Directly dialing the
DSL modem, and through my laptop that is connected to my PC by a cross
cable.

[] There are a few sites I cannot access at all even when I dial
directly through the modem, for instance, www.4guysfromrolla.com and a
few others (I suspect from the ones running on Exodus servers), . The
company guy from whom I've taken the connection says there's nothing
wrong from their end.

[] There are a few sites I cannot access when I connect through my
laptop that connects to the Internet through my PC, for instance,
http://mail.yahoo.com. It loads ok if I connect directly by dialing the
DSL modem.

What could be causing these blockages?

Thanks.

[wdvltalk] Configuring a payment gateway

2004-01-12 Thread Amrit Hallan
An old client of mine has arranged with a bank (ICICI) to
install a Java payment gateway on his website. He received a
few files zipped together that he has to "install" on the
server. As far as I could make out, he is using a
third-party hosting service, so how does he install the
files? Has someone setup such a gateway before?

Thanks
Amrit

[wdvltalk] Re: Table with equal width cells

2004-01-09 Thread Amrit Hallan
Thank you John.

Actually I'm "redesigning" my client's site and he has used
fixed numbers such as wihch, I don't
know...I wanted to avoid.

Yes, I can do it in PHP, but as you mentioned, the browser
resized the cell width according to the length of the text
string.

Thanks.

I don't think so - if you have different amounts of text or
different width
images in the cells, browsers will usually resize them as
they see fit.

It can, but you'll need to script it: work out how many
cells there are
going to be, and then divide 100 by that number to arrive at
the % width for
each cell. If you have PHP the code is something like this:

";

  for ($i = 1; $i <= $cells; $i++) {
echo '';
echo 'cell #'. $cell;
echo '\n';
  }

  echo "";

?>

Cheers
Jon

[wdvltalk] Table with equal width cells

2004-01-09 Thread Amrit Hallan
I've been working with the tag for such a
long time but haven't given it a thought. Can we create
cells of equal width without mentioning the "width"
attribute (even that doesn't seem to work sometimes). This I
want so that no matter what's the number of tags I
create, their width should be the same, along with being
liquid. Can it be done?

Thanks.

Hi Patrick.

Thanks for replying. Auto-tag completion is faster in DW but it's
lacking lots of things that HomeSite has, for instance, deleting
particular strings in one go. Although HomeSite is a bit rusty compared
to DW, I guess I'll go back to HomeSite for my coding work.

Thank you.

[wdvltalk] RE: Mixing PHP/HTML

2004-01-05 Thread Amrit Hallan
Thanks for replying, everybody.

The problem, finally is, the PHP doesn't like the command, so all the file extensions that support
this line refuse to execute the php code. Similarly, when a file
executes the php code, it refuses to obey the SSI commands. Is there a
way out? I have searched on the Net but failed to find a plausible
solution.

Thanks.

A very soothing layout. Checked on both IE 6+ and Opera 7.10 -- looks

[wdvltalk] Mixing PHP/HTML

2004-01-05 Thread Amrit Hallan
In few servers, for instance my current server, I cannot run code that
has both HTML and PHP in .php files. Either pure php works, or pure html
works. I know the problem must be with the server because the same code
works on another client's server. Do we have to mention somewhere how to
access php.exe? For instance, when I run .php files on my machine, I
have to use the link
http://localhost/php.exe/current-project/myfile.php. But how do I do it
on the remote server?

Thanks.

[wdvltalk] Re: Survey/Poll software

2003-08-19 Thread Amrit Hallan
I guess this has been a fundamental problem on the Net.
Isn't it demeaning to ask someone to render services for
free? I come across such clients almost on a daily basis.
Now that I'm a bit "secure" I don't even talk to them. If I
client doesn't want to pay on every hour spent on his or her
project, then he or she should be shown the door.

Here's a good article:

I'm absolutely amazed that you have never had one of these
before! I get
about three a week!

It's the well known old "Nigerian Scam" and you'd be
surprised how many
gullible people get taken in by it and actually follow it
up! Some lose
thousands and thousands as a result!

I've had versions from about eight or nine different
countries this year
alone (got six copies of the same one in one week - the
sender must have
been getting really p**ss*d off with me for not replying!
HeHeHe) and if I
was able to inherit all the money that has apparently been
left in bank
accounts around the world by dead relatives I never knew I
had (and most of
whom have the same name and died in exactly the same way on
the same road
on the same date in different countries - now there's a
feat) then I
wouldn't be reading the wonderful wdvl list. I'd be on the
beach lying on a
carpet of ten thousand dollar bills and enjoying a life
style to which I'd
love to become accustomed.

Hey Ho - back to the current web development project!

[wdvltalk] Thank you Re: Please check FLASH

2003-07-02 Thread Amrit Hallan
Thank you everybody -- the problem is solved.

I had made the animation in Flash MX. All I had to do was,
save the file as Flash 4. Now it is showing on all the

Thanks again.

[wdvltalk] Apache/PHP

2003-05-27 Thread Amrit Hallan
After a long time (after re-installing them on the new
computer), I'm working on an Apache/PHP/MySQL project. I'm
trying to test a form submission, but I'm always getting
this error:

The requested method POST is not allowed for the URL
/admin.php.

Apache/1.3.20 Server at 172.16.0.19 Port 80

Do I have to change settings in httpd.conf, or php.ini?

Thanks.

Yes David. I've been extensively using MySQL. After running
"mysqld" and then "mysql" I have been able to run all SQL
commands and I'm familiar with query commands. It's only
that, in this case, where to give those commands? I have
MySQL installed on my machine, but not MS SQL.

[wdvltalk] Net usage stats

2002-11-22 Thread Amrit Hallan
I've been writing some articles. Where can I find figures
like:

At a given time, how many people are applying for jobs
online, throughout the world, or

At a given time, how many email messages are travelling to

Thanks

[wdvltalk] Why like this

2002-10-09 Thread Amrit Hallan

For an example, when I type www.shell.com, I get

http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=home

and when I click on "About Shell," I get

http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=royal-en&FC3=/royal-en/html
/iwgen/welcome.html&FC2=/LeftHandNav?LeftNavState=1&FC1=

What purpose do these complicated URLs solve?

Thanks.

Hi Robert,

Since you probably need something that adds just time, I have written
this small function for you:

<%
function timeAdd(timePart, nTime)

  splitArray=split(dateadd(timePart, nTime, now()), " ")

  timeAdd=splitArray(1) & " " & splitArray(2)

end function

response.write timeAdd("h", 4)
%>

[wdvltalk] Re: Question on SQL Server Tables

2002-09-23 Thread Amrit Hallan

I think the privacy can be maintained in a single database too. Take
for an example, a bank accounts database where privacy is a critical
issue. Still, they don't have separate tables for separate customers.
We have a unique account number in a common database and still our
details cannot be accessed by other customers.

Again, depends on the kind of database management schema you plan to
follow, and what are your future plans. I prefer a single database
provided the customer information can be standardized.

satisfying. In fact I just uploaded the new layout (and shortened the
written content) because although hits are increasing, business is not. Of
course there should be something wrong somewhere. So I totally changed the
look and feel. I'll observe the result. I'll also be throwing up the site
for hard-critiques, but the problem is, no two views tally. Anyway, soon
I'll have to do something (better than doing nothing).

But if the traffic is increasing, I'll try to increase it more.

I understand that. But I'm not talking about those silly scripts. Sometimes
we underestimate the general requirements of surfers. People even need
elementary scripts like emailing forms, autoresponding after the form is
submitted, recommending pages, conducting surveys etc. Even small shopping
cart and content management applications. They are definitely not "it looks
cool" scripts.

Good idea! Please contribute.

Thanks.

If it is WDVL then I see nothing wrong in it. After all they have to earn
too.

These links look different in Netscape, and my client recently couldn't run
my javascript in IE5 and Netscape 4.7 (both for Mac).

[wdvltalk] Columns with CSS

2002-09-11 Thread Amrit Hallan

Somebody wants me to create a web site in the newspaper format, using one or
two columns. I can do it using tables, but I remember that can be done with
CSS too. Does someone know how, or has someone done it in the list so that I
can see the code?

Thanks.

[wdvltalk] Re: Title in ASP

2002-09-06 Thread Amrit Hallan

Thank you Bj, Tom and Howard.

As Tom said, I can use the extended SSI to know the name of the file. In ASP
too, we can obtain the name of the file by using
request.servervariables("URL"). So I thought of using this instead of the
page title.

Thank you again.

[wdvltalk] scr: Bytesworth

2002-09-03 Thread Amrit Hallan

Hello everybody.

I've been trying to re-design my site [ http://www.bytesworth.com ]. It
looks fine in IE but distorts in Netscape4.7, especially the parts that
contain forms. Both the forms are in /includes/form.inc and
/includes/ezine.inc. I don't want to spoil the present layout, but can it be
made decent in Netscape?

Thanks.
