Re: [wdvltalk] Client request!!!!!

2006-07-07 Thread Peter MacGregor

I'd support Ross in this.

I recently did the same thing with a client of
mine (not web design) even though it meant taking
a significant hit on cash flow - the hassle I was
getting just wasn't worth it. The funny part was,
within a week or so I had three calls from other
consultants I know that do the same sort of work
asking if I knew anything about the company as
they knew I'd done something for them. I felt
duty bound to tell them the story as we all
sometimes have to work together on large
projects. They'd all been approached - and have
now all turned it down! One insider at the client
tells me they are tearing their hair out trying
to find someone to work with them!

Clients often don't realise what a small pool of
people there may be for a particular skill - and
shoot themselves in several places (not just the
foot!) by messing around whoever they take on.

Riva - you never seem to be short of work, so
don't drive yourself crazy with this one - face
them down as Ross suggested - they'll either toe
the line or you'll walk away. Either way you are better off!

supposed to entail. Their decision-making
process is beyond your scope as a developer and
until such time they can approach you with a
fixed and definitive brief then it is
achieveing nothing except waste your time and
money, a cost of which, naturally, you have no choice but to pass on to them.

Furthermore the design choices being made,
irrespective of your PROFESSIONAL advice, will
ultimately serve only to destroy any
professional image and credibility this company
may have already. As a developer you must
deliver what the client wants. Should that
client make choices that will be of a determent
to them, you take pride in your work and have a
professional and personal responsibility to
inform them of these facts and provide your
expertise. At the end of the day, if the client
knew what they were doing they wouldn't have hired you.

So put the ball back into their court: either
recoup the wasted time and inform them that you
will continue to do so while they in-fight,
stand your ground and let them they're going to
make themselves look ridiculous if they
continue down this route, or pull the plug on
the grounds of professional disagreement.

Unless they're willing to keep paying you for
the time and energy they're wasting here, this
job and this client are not worth the headaches
and associating yourself with what will end up
as a 1998 high school Frontpage job.

If they're insistent on using the photo then why not try the Windows
Vista-style design? I think Microsoft have hired some half-decent designers
as their Vista site is actually really nice visually.

For your project I'm referring specifically to the Vista start page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ although I prefer one of the earlier
versions with clouds and soft water instead of that meadow-based young lady.

You'll need a high-quality, crisp image to work with to pull this off, but
it's a good start anyway. Furthermore I'd really try and push them into
dropping the image for a common site background or at least restricting it
to a smaller header strip.

In my opinion it'll make their image look a thousand bucks, plus it'll get
the ooh we look like Microsoft, so that MUST mean we're fantastic
mentality going (which is a nice trick to remember to get design-oblivious
or awkward clients happy in a hurry).

Riva,

I'm going to add my 2 cents worth on one point though in general, I agree
with Deb and Ross. If you do continue to work with them, insist on a better
picture. The out of focus one they've given you looks horrid as a web page
and it will totally detract from anything else you do, especially if it's
the full page background.

Agreed, I rarely have to fire a client but have done so on a couple of
occasions. Typically I screen the real PIA people out before they become
clients. As I told one person I'd rather be a greeter at Wal-Mart than work
with some people.

One person I mentored a few years back told me the best pieces of advice I
had ever given her was:

1. The client is NOT always right.
2. You don't need to accept every potential client that comes along.
3. Some clients are not worth the aggravation they cause and no PIA* factor
will make them worth keeping.

*I have a PIA factor scale that increases the rate as the PIA goes up. In
many cases, this will cause a decision In the client to find another person
to do their work. If not, and the aggravation factor is not too high I get
compensate for their behavior.

I know it's lifted directly from the Windows Vista site, but I think it

really the only way you're going to be able to work in a solid photo as a
background and still maintain a professional-looking image.

Oh and for all of those of you with Photoshop CS2, the Smart Sharpen filter

[wdvltalk] Client request!!!!!

2006-07-06 Thread Portman

Hi all,

I have a client that I am really regretting taking on. One of the
reasons is that it is a small organization and the guy who I first spoke
to said that he was getting too busy and from now on I would work with
guy2. Guy2 then said that he was too busy and I would now work with
guy3. Guy3 is also now too busy and I am working with the first guy again.

The problem is that each person has their own idea about what looks good
and what doesn't. They finally agreed that they all want a picture of
the lake in the background and one or two other things. My latest
request is that the menu on the side not be in a box. Because the
background is a lake picture with trees and sky, part of the menu is in
the sky and the other part is over the trees. How do I make a menu that
isn't in a box that will appear on both sky and trees and doesn't look
awful?? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Riva

Hi Riva,

Well, first of all I don't know if you realize this but the entire
background is tiling so on my screen I have several backgrounds side
by side and on top of one another which is something I would
address. As for the menu, what about removing the box and just use
links? Or, you could do a horizontal menu so the box isn't just
floating there, but instead is at the top of the page?

Hi, Honestly, the first viewing of the page made me feel it's a joke; it's
not just the small issue of the menu (you can always make the box without
outline and with transparent background). It's the big problem of the whole
page design. And I don't think anyone here would not say so. Good luck

Re: [wdvltalk] Client request!!!!!

2006-07-06 Thread Portman
I know! The old design was awful and they seem to be steering this
design back to the old design. I don't know if I will even include this
site in my portfolio . . .

I find that without a colored background, the menu items are not legible.

Hi,  Honestly, the first viewing of the page made me feel it's a joke;
it's not just the small issue of the menu (you can always make the box

of the whole page design. And I don't think anyone here would not say
so. Good luck

Hi all,

I have a client that I am really regretting taking on. One of the
reasons is that it is a small organization and the guy who I first
spoke to said that he was getting too busy and from now on I would
work with guy2. Guy2 then said that he was too busy and I would now
work with guy3. Guy3 is also now too busy and I am working with the
first guy again.
The problem is that each person has their own idea about what looks
good and what doesn't. They finally agreed that they all want a
picture of the lake in the background and one or two other things. My
latest request is that the menu on the side not be in a box. Because
the background is a lake picture with trees and sky, part of the menu
is in the sky and the other part is over the trees. How do I make a
menu that isn't in a box that will appear on both sky and trees and
doesn't look awful?? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi Deb,

Yes. I have fixed that but have not uploaded the new stylesheet yet.
Thanks for pointing it out.

I had a horizontal menu and they nixed (sp?) it and wanted a menu on the
side. I have half a mind to tell them to find someone else to do this.

Hi Riva,

Well, first of all I don't know if you realize this but the entire
background is tiling so on my screen I have several backgrounds side
by side and on top of one another which is something I would address.
As for the menu, what about removing the box and just use links? Or,
you could do a horizontal menu so the box isn't just floating there,
but instead is at the top of the page?

What do you think would make the site look more professional? It looks
as though I am stuck with that darn picture in the background . . .

If I were you I'd politely decline to continue the project on teh grounds
that it is incresing difficult and costly for you to operate with such
internal conflict on what this project is supposed to entail. Their
decision-making process is beyond your scope as a developer and until such
time they can approach you with a fixed and definitive brief then it is
achieveing nothing except waste your time and money, a cost of which,
naturally, you have no choice but to pass on to them.

Furthermore the design choices being made, irrespective of your PROFESSIONAL
advice, will ultimately serve only to destroy any professional image and
credibility this company may have already. As a developer you must deliver
what the client wants. Should that client make choices that will be of a
determent to them, you take pride in your work and have a professional and
personal responsibility to inform them of these facts and provide your
expertise. At the end of the day, if the client knew what they were doing
they wouldn't have hired you.

So put the ball back into their court: either recoup the wasted time and
inform them that you will continue to do so while they in-fight, stand your
ground and let them they're going to make themselves look ridiculous if they
continue down this route, or pull the plug on the grounds of professional
disagreement.

Unless they're willing to keep paying you for the time and energy they're
wasting here, this job and this client are not worth the headaches and
associating yourself with what will end up as a 1998 high school Frontpage
job.

If you have to use the photo one possibility is making it smaller,
add an oval shape around it of a solid coordinating color. Put the
nav on the left right aligned to go around the left side of the oval
and then center it in the site page. You could also try a gradient
fade of the photo.

That's a great idea Deb. Where would the text go though?

Well, if you make the photo considerably smaller (like about half
it's current size) then you'd have room for text next to it or you
could put the text under it depending upon how much text there
is. That was just one idea, too Riva. A quickie that crossed my
mind in a flash. This photo is also pretty blurry and I think a
clear, crisp photo is in order. One thing I forgot to mention would
be to mute the photo edges so it blends rather than leaving it as a
stark photo - something to make it not just look like a photo slapped
into a page. What's there *can* be made to look much more
professional if they'll give you some rope to work with, LOL! instead
of hanging you with it.

This site definitely needs a professional touch and if these people
aren't going to listen to you my suggestion is if you continue to do
the work that you not put it in your portfolio nor put your link to
it on the bottom - at least not as the designer. If they want the
site to look unprofessional that's their business, if you want to
continue the work that's your business but YOUR BUSINESS doesn't have
to suffer because of it. Make sense?
