If there is critical data I'd simply reinstall Windows so that the disk
could be accessed and make a complete back-up or boot from a Linux distro CD
that can read whatever format the disk is in and make a back-up from there
whichever is easier for you.

And wasting time with the "near obvious" on a system for a family member can
be, well, a waste of time. With a "missing operating system" message, there
is a VERY strong chances that a) the hard drive is dead, b) it's about to
die, or c) files are missing from the boot loader which won't allow it to
boot. Yes, that could be from a virus, or even a corrupt file in Windows.

If she said "this laptop contains all our important (fill in the blank)
information that we cannot replace", then I might suggest she spend more
time on it. However, I have beat a horse to death (figuratively speaking,
of course - I love horses) trying to chase down a problem. And this is one
that I probably wouldn't spend much time on.

In this case, I would format the drive, try to reload Windows on the same
drive. If it loads - great. If it doesn't, then I would get a new hard
drive. Once you get it reloaded, protect yourself with some software in the
event it was a virus that did this.

No need to jump on the anti-Windows bandwagon at this point. After all,
there is certainly no sign it was even a virus/malware that did this. I've
been running Windows machines for some time now and have had no issues with
malware.

Anyway, this is OT and we are getting even further away...

I've successfully managed to reformat and
reinstall Windows XP which is the original
operating system it came with and put back on in
the restore process :) It *seems* to be working
but until I can install firewall and anti-virus
and run it through Housecall or some other virus
check it's still a bit iffy. I suppose the drive
could be going but not gone yet so we'll
see. Thank you all for your help, you save us
$$$ at least the way it looks right now.

I am getting one error message on boot:

Media Check Failure - Check cable

All that's plugged into it right now is the power
cable. Any ideas what cable it might be talking about?

Is the laptop set up to boot from the CD because regardless of what's
happened to the hard drive you shouldn't get this message if you're
successfully booting from the CD.

You'll need to get into the laptop's BIOS and change the boot settings
(or boot priority) to fire off the CD-ROM first.

If it does prove to be the hard drive then I'm not sure about $US but
I'm sure it'll be worth getting a bigger drive than 30GB as even
laptop drives are rapidly coming down in price.

No! Formatting is something you do to a partition, not to the physical
device. With W98 there's big likelihood that the problem is a boot sector
virus or a BIOS virus, neither of which standard formatting would affect.
Reinstalling might kill a boot sector virus, but it won't do anything about a

Bad assumptions can become expensive. First figure out what the problem is.
Get and burn an iso from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and boot from it to

Once you know what the problem is, I suggest if she's going to use it for the
internet that you instead install an operating system capable of being
defended against malware, something that cannot reasonably be done any longer
with any version of WinDOS.

Usually hitting F12 during startup will allow you to boot from CD (or on

No, I'm not absolutely positive but I thought
that's what it meant. I tried F8 to try to get
into Safe Mode, no luck. Tried that both w/the
recovery cd and the Win98 cd. She does think
this was caused by a virus. Any idea what key

find out about the bootloader? Does that just mean it switched on how it
loads?

During a normal boot-up, the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System, the
low-level software which brings the machine into life) does all sorts of
BIOSy magic, then looks for some code to execute in order to start the
operating system. This will be the bootloader on (one of) the system's
hard drives normally, but can also be a bootable CD, or sometimes a
bootable USB drive or a network card with a boot-from-network facility.

Anyway, the error "Missing Operating System" simply means that the BIOS
was unable to find anything to hand over control to, which could be because:

 - the drive has fully failed
 - the drive (possibly only the boot sector) has been wiped, by a virus
or by someone playing with partititiong tools
 - someone has changed the list of boot devices in the BIOS.

To get into the BIOS, you normally press the Delete key, or F2, or F1
shortly after turning the machine on. It will normally tell you on
screen with a message like "Press Del to enter setup" or something similar.

If you get into the BIOS, you should be able to find options to select
which devices it should attempt to boot from and in which order.

Some systems also have a "one-time" boot menu you can access in a
similar way to the BIOS setup (pressing a specified key at the right
time) in order to override the boot order. (My Dell Inspiron 1501 does
this, and I think my older 1150 does too).

Once you've selected the CD-ROM drive as a boot device (with a higher
priority than the hard drive) reboot with the recovery CD or a Windows
CD in the drive and see what happens (or, if you see an option for a
one-time boot menu when the machine is first starting, use that instead).

Good luck :)

Cheers

Dave P

No, hard drives all have standard physical dimensions. There's 3.5"
drives for desktop machines, and 2.5" for laptops.

Are you sure that the drive in the old machine is dead, though? The
"Missing Operating System" error doesn't necessarily mean that the hard
drive is dead, it could just be that the bootloader has been wiped (by a
virus, for example).

When you tried booting from the recovery CD / Windows CD, you may have
to press a key at the appropriate time to boot from CD, or you may need
to enter the BIOS setup utility and configure it to boot from the CD
before attempting to boot from the hard drive.

Cheers

Hi Deb -

It depends on what she uses the laptop for. I upgraded my original laptop
from an 80GB to a 100GB. Now I would love to have something closer to 160GB
to 200GB. My point is that I think 30GB doesn't seem like very much.
Although if it's Windows 98, and she doesn't do much, then it's fine.

That said, I love shopping on NewEgg.com. Here is a list of laptop drives
that they have available:

Toshiba 60GB drive for $46
Western Digital 120GB for $69

Subject: [wdvltalk] OT: is this a good price on a hard drive?

Hi there,

My daughter's laptop's hard drive is shot it
looks like. "Missing Operating System" is all I
can get it to do. Have tried inserting the
recovery cd and a Win98SE cd - same message. I
opened it up and pulled the drive and reseated it
twice - just in case it had come loose. No
luck. I'm wondering if this is a good price and
place to purchase her a new drive:

$55 for the 30GB drive. Never had to buy one
before so I don't have a clue. Thanks for your help.
