Tom,

Wow! Thank you for the amazing resource. Already found a couple of
interesting tidbits.

And thank you for weewx - very happy with the software. :)

Thanks again,

Re: [weewx-user] Some possible helps for anyone running an old Davis Vantage Pro2 console

2018-01-16 Thread Thomas Keffer
Doug, the biggest incompatibility problem is actually between loggers.
Sometime in 2012, Davis changed the interface to the logger. Modern
consoles will not work with old loggers. The console looks for a key in the
logger and, if it doesn't find it, refuses to boot. This was to prevent 3rd
party loggers although, human nature being what it is, smart people have
found ways around the lock.

New loggers will work with any console.

Details here

2018-01-16 Thread Doug Bo
I agree, the 1.90 firmware is quite good. Also very true, don't fix
something that isn't broke.

My deal is that I run multiple consoles with multiple ISS at multiple
locations with repeaters, remote temp sensors and soil sensors. I want
everything to be interchangeable so that if something breaks or dies or
gets weird I can swap out components quickly to keep the weather data
flowing. Thus I want matching firmware to minimize surprises down the
road. I'm a farmer so my weather stations have a direct impact on my
wallet. I guess I'm sort of fussy about my setup. LOL

I'll do a bit more digging on this to satisfy my own curiosity.

Thanks for the input,

good point.

I guess in this age of internet connected devices and exploits I have
gotten in the habit of trying to update whatever I can.

before weewx the console didn't change daylight savings on the correct
dates but with weeex that isn't an issue anylonger.

Why update?

My console dates back to 2006 and runs fine. Take a look at the Davis
change logs and you'll see that the "fixes" are all very esoteric and
unlikely to be encountered.
https://www.davisnet.com/resources/weather-monitoring/#support (Then select
Software/Firmware, then select VantagePro 2)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Will do. Today's chat: I was told 3.80 has "minor improvements", if
current version of console firmware is working properly then don't worry
about new version.

I'll see if I can get in touch with an engineer tomorrow.

Firmware updaters for console & WL IP:
https://www.davisnet.com/resources/weather-monitoring/#support

My console has old hardware so I was stuck at 1.90
I ended up purchasing a new console which has version 3.80 which you can't
download from the web. I'm going to ask Davis about this oddity.

Update:

I upgraded my console to the latest and greatest firmware. Still seeing
network issues so the problem isn't the console firmware. I'm using an
Ethernet to WiFi bridge between logger and network. I think that is my
issue. Going to make some network changes to see if I can isolate my
timeout problem.

[weewx-user] Some possible helps for anyone running an old Davis Vantage Pro2 console

2017-12-26 Thread Doug Bo
I'm running an older Vantage Pro2 console, vintage 2007, firmware 1.90
(can't update firmware due to console hardware changes)
My WeatherlinkIP is running current firmware but console seems to be very
slow to respond. I disabled the upload to weatherlink.

I had to tweak the conf file to get it to run more than 24 hours. The
parameter adjustments below are based on threads I found in this forum.
Hopefully my discoveries will help someone. Although I doubt anyone (other
than me) is running old consoles. LOL

Any other tips are appreciated. Thanks.

I'm currently discussing my options with Davis on updating my consoles.
Maybe newer hardware. :)
