TASK DESCRIPTION Currently 15% of all of our databases resources is being spent on responding to the term lookups in wikidata: https://performance.wikimedia.org/arclamp/svgs/daily/2024-05-18.excimer-wall.all.reversed.svgz?x=895.1=837 That is potentially is up to half of s8. We can't reduce that to zero as they serve important functionalities but they can certainly be improved. One major problem I see is that there are three major consumers of descriptions: - Mobile Frontend adding tagline (via `MobileFrontendHooks::onOutputPageParserOutput()` - WikibaseClient adding json+ld schema to pages via `SkinAfterBottomScriptsHandler` - A lot of API calls which is mostly coming from apps: https://github.com/wikimedia/apps-android-wikipedia/blob/d6e160120af5872c2620029a7392d737b9d3b160/app/src/main/java/org/wikipedia/dataclient/Service.kt#L44 and https://github.com/wikimedia/wikipedia-ios/blob/08f5693881a6d0fac23e649643f673a3fb4e724e/Wikipedia/Code/WMFSearchFetcher.m#L167 - Maybe search in new vector does it too? if so, then we should definitely cache value of descriptions in memcached. We can deduplicate their work and reduce the load on our databases drastically, let's assume we just reduce it to half, that's 25% of replicas in s8 and can translate to ~$20,000 cost reduction every year just for the hardware purchases. One simple fix is that WikibaseClient put the description to Parseroutput object and reads it cached (which it doesn't do that currently) and then MF reads from that value as well. Ladsgroup added a comment. I agree that the pruning part needs to be rethought and revamped but I'm failing to see how it's connected to this problem. This is explicitly about locking the rows in `wbt_item_terms` which is the head. Let's say for Q1234 you have this: ++--+--+ | wbit_id| wbit_item_id | wbit_term_in_lang_id | ++--+--+ | 767752395 | 1234 |5 | | 6682347558 |1234 | 172 | | 95594787 | 1234 | 192 | | 34102141 | 1234 | 237 | | 561818268 | 1234 | 274 | ++--+--+ And if you don't lock the rows in `wbt_item_terms`, and if all of these get corrupted and deleted and as result entries in `wbt_term_in_lang` also get deleted (and even entries in `wbt_text_in_lang` also get deleted). A reparse should fix all of this and reinsert any missing entries in all of the tables if they get deleted by the prune job. i.e. even if you corrupt from the head to the leaf via race conditions on the deletion job. It still should recover with reparse, from my understanding of how it is built. What am I missing here? TASK DESCRIPTION Currently, one of the biggest transaction time warnings we have for production is this: SELECT wbit_term_in_lang_id AS `value` FROM `wbt_item_terms` WHERE wbit_item_id = N FOR UPDATE (see https://logstash.wikimedia.org/goto/3e08a3ceb6d8352b13217ff6862cbfe7) Given that this table is secondary data with the ability to self heal after reparse and specially since `wbit_term_in_lang_id` does not hold the dictionary to be used as foreign key (unlike wbt_text). That select for update seems to be a scalability issue doubly so given the rate of edits in Wikidata. Can we just remove that? Ladsgroup added a comment. With some discussions with volunteers in Wikimania, some people are really keen on having ability to share query results of WCQS/WDQS without auth even if it's stale. Like basically HTML of the result copied and stored somewhere. A general problem of pressure on query services is that sometimes I just want the cached data to share it, sometimes I want to run it right now. Something that's already decently solved in Quarry <https://quarry.wmflabs.org>. In Quarry, sharing a db query result doesn't need an account nor does anything heavy internally (it doesn't do any actual db query) but building a new query to share does need the OAuth dance. The damaging and goodfaith model of Wikidata is quite different from the rest of wikis and I don't think the Language-agnostic_revert_risk model <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Machine_learning_models/Proposed/Language-agnostic_revert_risk> would be really suitable here. Do we have a replacement for it? or for now I should just switch to ores-legacy.wikimedia.org until we figure out what to do with wikidata models? Ladsgroup added a comment. Looking at it. I'm not sure if the pieces there are really needed. For example: `ReplicationWaiter::wait` is used in jobs, jobs take replication into account. And `ItemsPerSiteBuilder` which is used in a maint script which you can add $this->waitForReplication in that maint script and be done with it. The most complicated ones are for acquiring term store stuff and delay jobs. For example, for job delay, I don't know why it's there even. The lag is usually below one second and the time it takes to stay in the queue and get processed is at least an order of magnitude larger. You can just replace it with 5seconds and be done with it. Ladsgroup added a comment. The urls that could make reads to s8 are mostly POSTs, the s8 warmup doesn't mean wikidata.org reads here. It means reparsing Hubble Space Telescope <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Space_Telescope> in English Wikipedia and reparse several categories in Commons. So the warmup script needs to be able to do POST reqs. That's the complicating factor, otherwise I would have done it last time. The thing is: It has almost exclusively nothing to do with the SDoC. The biggest tables were templatelinks, categorylinks, externallinks, etc. It has already back to a much smaller size and I hope we will get to a reasonable size by end of the calendar year but it's not really related to SDoC TBH. Yesterday I had similar fun when doing schema change on core. One thing to keep in mind is that now we have --type=all that automatically discovers and puts the files in all three supported RDBMSes (it's not perfect, specially for core where archives are all over the place). Using type=all should simplify your makefile a lot at least. I do understand your point @Trizek-WMF but I think it's a bit different:
- Read-only limits write (editing, etc.). Deleting the main page (while being
quite an adventure, I admit) heavily impacts reads and Wikipedia has a massive
disparity between read and write. Specially the fact that around 3% of all
reads to wikipedia go to the main page. For example, French Wikipedia yesterday
had 24K edits yesterday but had 1B page views last month. A napkin calculation
gives the ratio of 1408 page view to edit for French Wikipedia.
- We intentionally chose the time that human edits is at the lowest to
minimize the impact. For example, in the whole minute of 6:00AM UTC yesterday,
there were only eight edits on French Wikipedia. Six edits the day before and
so on. I admit it's a bit inconvenient for me to wake up in such hour
(specially as a night owl) but I personally suggested that time knowing the
implications.
- It doesn't really break anything. Bots are expected to wait and retry in
such cases, pywikibot does it automatically. And both editors (VE and
traditional) wouldn't lose edits, it just gives you a message like a "hit the
submit button again in a minute". Very similar workflow to when your edit token
expires ("session lost" error) which I get way more often than getting
read-only error (the session lost error can be reproduced when you keep the
edit tab open for too long). And in thirty seconds, if you try again, it's
already saved.
- In SRE practices, we have concept of error budget
<https://sre.google/sre-book/embracing-risk/#xref_risk-management_unreliability-budgets>.
We have way more edits failing due to intermittent network issues, race
conditions, dead locks, etc. Even we just take edits and assume 8 fail every
day (e.g. read-only taking a full minute and we do it every day which we
don't), the ratio of failed edits is 0.03% and well within in our error budget.
A more realistic calculation would be something along the lines 0.0014% or
14ppm. That's extremely low.
- The last but not least, we have to increase our maintenance in our
databases. We are addressing really long-standing high priority issues (e.g.
links normalization, revision migration, etc.) on top of addressing tech debts
(e.g. standardizing timestamp fields) on top of regular maintenance (e.g.
kernel reboots for security updates, mariadb upgrades, OS upgrades, random
power or network issues, etc.). This year, we did four times as schema changes
than we did last year. Part of this is inevitable as if we don't address the
first category (high priority schema improvements), no one would be able to
edit Wikipedia in two or three years. Commons is already in an extremely
dangerous state reaching 2TB.
- We really have to streamline the process of master switchovers, I already
made it that the task and patches are done automatically (example: T314369
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T314369>)
P.S. Regarding deleting the main page, A similar story from English Wikipedia
