I updated the gadget (synced new code from Wikidata) and tried to apply the 
changes from beta:

the initialization code is somewhat different.  does it look ok?

also doesn't work on diff pages (see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T85804) 
but I no longer get the js error since adding jquery.wikibase.entityview as a 
dependency for the gadget.

adding jquery.wikibase.entityview seems to work (at least no longer get the js 
error, though nothing linked).

ps: some addition changes will be needed (no longer to use 
statementview.getReferences() and get references directly from the statement 
instead) when we deploy new code on wikidata sometime in the next weeks. but 
think the changes can be applied now.

I know I made this point several times, but I haven't seen it addressed or 
debunked yet, so I'll continue to do so:

I think we limit ourselves by not allowing us to write PHP code specific for 
Wikidata. I think we make Wikibase worse by doing so. I think, by doing so, we 
make Wikidata not as great as it could be. This also leads us to not follow the 
open/closed principle on a module level. Instead, we introduce a vast amount of 
configuration options which allow modification of Wikibase while at the same 
time limiting users to what we imagined and bothered to implement.

From this follows (for Wikibase):

- QuantityValue parsing above a base line ( `explode( ' ', … )` ) should be 
supplied by Wikidata
- QuantityValue validation above what Wikibase itself needs to work should be 
supplied by Wikidata
- QuantityValue formatting above a base line ( `wfMessage( 
'wikibase-value-with-unit', $dv->amount, $dv->unit )->escaped()` ) should be 
supplied by Wikidata
- QuantityValue editing above a base line ( `''` ) 
should be supplied by Wikidata (if required)

In terms of Wikidata, I suggest the following:

- Translatable statements on items (using two specific properties) specify the 
short and long unit name for displaying in quantity values
- A statement on items marks them as being a unit (It takes a lot of work to 
implement filtering on top of this, but validating is simple)

This would lead to the following implementations:

- WikidataItemQuantityValueUnitParser: fetch unit item (by long unit name 
propval, short unit name propval, then label), store item URI
- WikidataItemQuantityValueUnitValidator: fetch unit item (by URI), make sure 
it is an unit item
- WikidataItemQuantityValueUnitFormatter: fetch unit item (by URI), show most 
appropriate name (long / short / label)
- For editing, Wikibase baseline seems to be enough

The original problem was that it did choke on the redirect from http to https 
instead of following it. Which is probably OK for this use case.

Using https URLs will work for all Wikimedia wikis. I heard this had the effect 
that the links in the sidebar would also become https instead of protocol 
relative, but this is not the case for ru.wikinews.org. Why did we not force 
https for all interwikis then?

Should we change the default for Http::get for protocol relative to https?

For those projects that were not switched to https only using the protocol 
relative URL in the sidebar would be the correct behavior. For https only wikis 
that would also be acceptable although https would be preferable over protocol 
relative.

The only problem we had was that URLs in the sitelink view (on repo) suddenly 
became https (instead of protocol relative), that could pose a problem for 
users that aren't able to use https.
Because of this only the sites table entry for ruwikinews on Wikidata has https 
urls, all other remain protocol-relative (I changed that per hand :/).

These are all not present in neither of core/includes/Names.php, Cldr, 
UniversalLanguageSelector/data/langnames.ser, 
UniversalLanguaeSelector/lib/jquery.uls/src/jquery.uls.data.js. This means we 
can't rely on either of them.

work as it is now. I don't see the changes from beta applied there yet. To work 
with current master these changes need to be applied:

https://github.com/wmde/ValueView/pull/144 makes the language lists used by the 
frontend and the backend match. That does not add support for the mentioned 
languages, but it at least makes behavior consistent.

@aaron I'm afraid that patch doesn't address the actual problem: yes, you can 
get around the serialization update if you rely on global state. But if you do 
that, you don't need an extra wrapper thingy, just do it in the DataUpdate.

Note that Wikibase will no longer put DataUpdates into the ParserOutput once  
I93f09dc5b is merged, see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T86308.

Maybe it's best to just remove the DataUpdates functionality from ParserOutput 
alltogether. The LinksUpdate thing can go into 
AbstractContent::getSecondaryDataUpdates(). 
ParserOutput::getSecondaryDataUpdates() isn't used anywhere directly, as far as 
I can see.

If we do that, we may want to add a hook to 
AbstractContent::getSecondaryDataUpdates().

Terms currently are silently limited to UI languages, since you only get the 
input controls for UI languages. Internally, the views wrongly work with 
$.uls.data.languages, though.
With https://github.com/wmde/ValueView/pull/144, monolingual text uses UI 
languages consistently (i. e., frontend and backend).

Okay, so when entering "31 September 1949" through the Frontend in an edit and 
saved it is formatted as "1 October 1949" and correctly saved as 
"+019-10-01T00:00:00Z"
This suggests that the date in question has been added through the API and 
extra validation is needed there...

However looking further at the Item I see this edit 
https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q5906&diff=118880783&oldid=118880605 
in which the 31 September is added. Presuming the Front-end was either fixed 
after this edit (Which was in April) I think it is time to check the API 
validation!

Actually, the views work with `wgULSLanguages` (UI languages), but fall back on 
$.uls.data.languages if the requested language is not in `wgULSLanguages`. We 
could probably just remove this fallback. @thiemowmde

I my opinion, specifically developing for Wikidata would be opening Pandora's 
box. We already have rather awkward Wikidata-specifics in the the code 
(Calendar types reference Wikidata items, for example) and, from my point of 
view, dealing with gadgets is already a critical aspect (we should, for 
example, find a way to reflect the AuthorityControl gadget's functionality in 
Wikibase core as soon as possible which, actually, points into a similar 
direction). I am not sure whether every third party would like to access 
Wikidata (or any web service at all) for running their Wikibase installation 
and I remain advocating having an independent and flexible stand-alone 
software. When configuring Wikidata, why should those configuration options and 
the corresponding logic be separated from Wikibase? That points into the 
direction of having a Wikidata release and a Wikibase release, eventually.

@ori: simply be cause there is currently no mechanism (as far as I know) for 
extensions to provide deferred updated.  Only some specific hard-coded updates 
are deferred, and everything else is executed right away.

DataUpdate itself could somehow indicate whether it wants to be run

1. in the transaction that updates the page table
2. immediately after updating the page table
3. at the end of the web request
4. some time later (job queue)

I'd support that feature request, but I'm not volunteering to implement it :)

On the client wiki, we are tracking which page uses which data item, by 
inserting rows into the wbc_entity_usage table. On the repo, we do similar 
tracking of which data item links to which client page (wb_items_per_site), 
which labels, aliases and descriptions are defined for an item (wb_terms), 
which property has which type (wb_peroperty_info), etc. Basically, quite 
similar to what the link tables do in core.

Deferring the updates until the end of the request would probably be ok, but 
might prove problematic for tables used for uniqueness checks (currently, 
wb_terms and wb_items_per_site, though I hope to reduce this in the future, see 
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T74430).

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Wikibase does special things (custom html, etc) with what goes into the 
parser cache. When we deploy new code, we sometimes need to bump $wgCacheEpoch, 
because of UI changes.  We don't bump cache epoch every deploy, so this would 
make sense as a version constant or such.
  
  I see that Parser has a version constant that is used as part of determining 
expiry in CacheTime.
  
  It would be great if a Wikibase "Parser" version could also be used in 
determining cache expiry.

The idea of localized units is great, however I wonder about the following 
things. Let's say we express quantities in all kinds of different units, so if 
we have a property for the area of the country, one country would have it in 
square meters, another in square kilometers, yet another in square feet or 
hectares. Now we want to see which country has the biggest area. That would be 
quite a challenge. So if we want Wikidata to be machine-friendly data 
collection that could be processed by automated tools, how do we ensure the 
quantities of some kind have units that can be automatically handled together 
efficiently - i.e. even if we know how to convert square kilometers to square 
feet and vice versa, how do we efficiently index such things?
