The concern //here// is less whether EntitySchema is supported in the client
per se or to what extent. That is something for Product to require. Though I do
note that I have seen requests from users for that.
However, the reason that this is listed here is that it seems to be
//actively breaking//, that is, showing an **Internal error** when you try to
edit the page.
We will need to keep this in mind when coming with a proposed implementation
for the requested changes, and we need to pay attention to this when actually
implementing it. Probably there need to be at least tests to make sure that
this does not happen.

If I recall correctly, and after reading the description and quickly clicking on some of the links, the //primary// benefit would be that some Grafana dashboards would be less confusing. Especially https://grafana.wikimedia.org/d/00290/wikidata-query-service-ui?viewPanel=12=1=now-5y=now (duplicate 'restore' line, three 'shortUrlResult' lines) and maybe other panels too, if they use that data. The stakeholder would be whoever cares about having and understanding the usage data of the Query Service GUI. To me that would be Product, but I don't understand the scope of responsibility here well enough in detail to say which Product person exactly. A //secondary// benefit would be for our new Data Analyst to be onboarded to the weeds of this part of the wider analytics infrastructure. But obviously I'm the wrong person to say if that is still needed or when an opportune moment would be. I guess a //tertiary// benefit would be resolving this confusing structure for the engineers working on the wiring for the WDQS GUI tracking. So in terms of timing, I could see 3 occasions when it would be particularly opportune to tackle this issue: - When we want to make a decision informed by this data and so the confusing presentation caused by this is an issue - When our Data Analyst needs to do more work with this infrastructure and so this task would serve its onboarding benefit well - When we're starting to collect more data to be displayed there or in related panels, and this confusing structure makes it harder to understand whether we did right or made a mistake Hope that helps, but I don't think I have looked into this for over a year. Please take everything I write here with a grain of salt, I'm really not firm
with databases. This is mainly me thinking aloud.
Reading the section in the wiki about transaction scope was helpful for me to
understand the mediawiki specific context:

From reading the comments on the related changes on Gerrit and linked
Phabricator tasks, it seems to me that the current code expects to not run in a
transaction at all and to directly write to the database and then wait for
replication after each batch.
And `AddUsagesForPageJob` seems to indeed not set the
`JOB_NO_EXPLICIT_TRX_ROUND` flag.
So, what @aaron writes seems to be good avenues to explore.

The waiting seems to happen //between// batches, but is it also important to
happen after the //last// batch? Or, if there is only one batch, then must it
also happen after that one batch?
If there are many pages that have only a few usages that do not fill a whole
badge, then that might lead to a lot of needless waiting in transactions. That
might amount to more than the actual transactions with multiple batches?
Also, I noticed @hoo in many of the changes touching this code.
I still have to understand the implications of named locks better.

thinking. I could see that making a difference if we have many pages with a lot
of usages that rarely change, and so pruning them might reduce the number of
batches.

If looking at //traffic// is what this is about, then requests to `api.php` and `load.php` should maybe be included. Whereas //edits// probably need a much narrower filter that is different yet again. Though I do not actually know your objective or have much context at all here.
