[WikiEducator] You can help WE get ready to make the future happen!

2009-06-03 Thread Wayne Mackintosh
Hi Everyone,

*Good plans shape good decisions. That's why good planning helps to make
elusive dreams come true. *Lester Bittel, 1918.

WE needs your help in getting ready to make the future happen. I provide a
brief reflection on the foundations we have established to date and request
your assistance in a few planning initiatives.

PREPARING TO MAKE THE FUTURE HAPPEN

These are exciting times --- we're getting ready for doing big things.

WE need to prepare to take on the challenges and opportunities in fostering
the development of sustainable OER ecosystems. This means we must plan for
scaling up our activities. This includes the refinement of strategic plans
and corresponding processes so that we can widen and share the reach of our
collective project.

Sadly -- many OER projects are dependant on donor funding and have not
planned for sustainability. Our challenge is to get the sustainability
challenge right. WikiEducator is fortunate -- because we started from the
premise of building a sustainable project from the start in collaboration
with the free culture eco-system. Our strategy has served us well to date
and we're now in a position to move forward during the next phase of our
growth.

A SOLID FOUNDATION

First and foremost -- we are a committed community of educators who
understand the unique demands of education. WE share in the core values of
social inclusion, the principles of freedom, and a forward looking
disposition for a better future. This is the cornerstone which will ensure
our future success. In addition, we have a number of important building
blocks in place:

   - The OER Foundation, an independent non profit registered to raise and
administer funding to support our efforts in building a sustainable OER
   ecosystem;
   - A generous financial contribution from the Commonwealth of Learning to
   support our technical infrastructure for the next three years;
   - First-hand knowledge and experience in mass peer collaboration with a
good sense of what works and what doesn't.
   - An Open Community Governance model to guide and steward WE in
accordance with our core community values.
   - A committment to open philanthropy which means that all our planning
documents are developed openly and transparently in the wiki :-)

THE NEXT STEPS

There are many insights to be gained from the public domain, inlcuding for
instance Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

*"Would you tell me which way I ought to go from here?"* asked Alice

*"That depends a good deal on where you want to get."* said the Cat.

*"I really don't care where"* replied Alice.

*"Then it doesn't much matter which way you go"* said the Cat.

(Note that Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are in the Public Domain -- see
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/11)
WE currently have a number of parallel initiatives on the go in preparing
for scaling up operations for future sustainability. Please consider
offering your help in areas of interest or prior experience. You can add
your names as active participants in a number of workgroups or bookmark
these pages and offer advice when appropriate:

   1. Workgroup on Workgroups -- an intiative designed to develop guidlines
on the establishment and operation of workgroups in WikiEducator for
   adressing community-wide issues (see:
   http://wikieducator.org/Workgroup:WikiEducator_Workgroups )
   2. Workgroup aiming to develop a policy briefing for policy makers on OER
   (See: http://wikieducator.org/OER_Brief_for_policy_makers)
   3. Workgroup to develop policy guidlines for WikiEducator's technology
   infrastructure (See: http://wikieducator.org/Workgroup:Technology_policy)

In addition, we're also drafting the strategic and operational plans for the
OER Foundation in the wiki --- and we're calling all the strategists and
planning gurus to help us out on this one as well. (See:
http://www.wikieducator.org/WikiEducator:OER_Foundation )

We have lots to do --- but OER is too important for the future
sustainability of education to get this wrong.

Cheers
Wayne

When I first came across Phils' work I couldn't help but have a big
smile on my face. I like his tag line of "No rest for the wikied". I
know of a saying "No rest for the wicked." I wonder how these two
relate ;) As I further explored Phils' work I was encouraged by his
works in making WikiEducator available in four languages (English,
Spanish, Portugese & French). He may not be doing the translation
himself, yet he is making things happen. Also, take a look around all
of Phils' profile sub-pages so much great work in bring references and
resources together. It is with great pleasure to award Phil Bartle
(http://www.wikieducator.org/User:Philbartle) the June 2009 featured
user page. Congratulations, Phil.

Congratulations, Phil. Your user page is a real gem!

I hadn't thought through the underlying meaning and full import of your

WikiEd is the chance to contribute to the innocent subversion ;-)
