Hi Wilfredo,

Why don't you get in contact with the organizers and ask them to include
you in next year's jury? This way you will have a say in how the pictures
are evaluated and those other (better, in your view) photographers will
have a better chance.

This is exactly what happened with last year's winner in Romania and I
believe he made for a very good jury member :)

The more years a country has organized WLM, the harder it is to get diverse
monuments into the contest. This in turn makes it harder to use the images
on the projects, which is something the grant team looks at when giving you
the money to organize.

Some contests then concentrate on having great images, while other
concentrate on monuments diversity and the international organizers aim for
more abstract targets, as Lily described above. That means that the local
contest might not necessarily say anything about your photography skills,
but that's OK - there are always other events in our community that you
might want to consider participating in.

I do know quite a lot of people who wear the swag they receive, but I
realize that this is dependent on local context and habits. Specifically,
in Romania it is not uncommon for photographers to work in t-shirts (as
opposed to shirts or a more formal attire).

That being said, compared to the other stuff you mentioned, t-shirts have
the advantage of lasting much longer AND being far more visible. Mugs and
socks are mostly visible to their owners, while t-shirts visible to anyone
who happens to be near the owner.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Video upload "wizard"

2018-08-28 Thread Strainu
Hey,

If there are other countries besides Romania that want to encourage
video uploads, you should know that video2commons maintainer
{{u|Zhuyifei1999}} has done a tremendous job making it possible to
pre-fill the information template and other fields from the wizard/
This makes it (almost) as easy to correctly upload videos in any
format as it is to upload photos.

You can find details here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Video2commons#Is_there_a_way_to_pre-fill_the_description_of_the_file?

I already implemented this for Romania, see the "video" links in the
image columns:
https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_monumentelor_istorice_din_jude%C8%9Bul_Bac%C4%83u
. The Lua code that does the magic is available at

oh, my english is bad, i of course ment how you calculated the number.
there must be some tools available to do this, and ideally they are online

Do you mean the number of images? You might like to analyse the stats page:
https://toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/stats.php

It might not match 100% what the report says, as some images were
deleted, but it should be pretty close. You also have raw data if you
want to make your own statistics.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Fwd: [Wikitech-l] Easy upload of Flickr photos to Commons

To: Wikimedia developers wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org, drecod...@gmail.com

I hereby celebrate that we've merged Ankur Anand's (drecodeam's) Flickr
integration work into UploadWizard, and that administrators on Commons
can now upload photos directly from Flickr. See
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28731 .

Once we've shaken this out on the live site, I believe we'll be able to
open it up so all users will be able to upload multiple images at once
from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons. I can only imagine how great this
will be for Wiki Loves Monuments next year. :-) Thanks to Ankur, Ryan
Kaldari, Mark Holmquist, and everyone else who worked on this!

The Gerrit changeset that went through 26 patchsets (if at first you
don't succeed, try, try again): https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/12269/

Ankur worked on this as part of his 2012 Google Summer of Code project.
His HTML5 drag-and-drop support and geolocation metadata import
for UploadWizard, still need polish before we can merge them:
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/q/owner:drecodeam+status:open,n,z Feel
free to help.

Also, our blog post about this year's GSoC students is now re-posted on
the Google open source blog:

Sorry for the late response. I needed the db to load the full upload list.

Investigatio uploaded 2004 photos, being the most prolific Ucranian

If we look at the presence of those identifiers in the lists,
Investigatio has one monument with a bad id (Crimea Sevastopol

We have a rather large amount of photos participating in the contest
that are in Flickr and I was wondering when is it good to import them
into Commons. I was thinking maybe Oct 1st, and filtering by upload
time, so to avoid leaving photos behind. How does that affect the
overall count etc? How are other organizers dealing with the Flickr
 import?

We (Romania) are importing the pictures as we speak, since we went for
a semi-manual approach that means cleaning up the description and
categories. This takes a lot of time (I'm doing at the very most 50
images in 2.5-3h every night) and we wouldn't be able to handle the
deadlines any other way.

On the other hand, if you have people with lots of spare time that can
do the import after Oct 1st, it is perhaps a better solution.

 Reported on bugzilla https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40383

Just beat you to it :) It is now tracked in
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40380

It seems UW is not using some new unified plural-rules JS file, so all
languages with plural rules are broken. The workaround we chose was to
redirect the UW to the English version. We hate it, but it's better
than to have no upload at all.

yes WLMPC, the competition. I am looking for a nice photo voting

We're mostly doing it the other way around - we're having people
upload the photos to Commons, then having the jury select the
pictures. The second part varies from country to country, for instance
in Romania the jury just browses through the category, selects some
pictures then they meet and evaluate each of the selected pictures
individually.

Many US historic districts have had several expansions, which results
in multiple reference numbers. In at least two cases, Charleston
Historic District in South Carolina, and one earlier, having multiple
refnums in the table results in the upload button being disabled. I
removed the extra refnums (leaving the first) in both cases and the
 upload button then worked.
Any suggestions for a general fix?

You mean problems with upload wizzard? By default it has restriction
of no more than 25 characters to be put in ID field. If you put more
then upload button does not work. You can change it by putting in
your campaign form other number. 0 means that there is no such
restriction at all.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] How are the adm1 translated names obtained?

2012-09-11 Thread Strainu
2012/9/11 Arthur Richards aricha...@wikimedia.org:
 Hi Strainu,

There is some documentation about this here:
 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_mobile_application/Data_issues

Briefly, we've taken a datadump of ISO-3166-2 data from commondatahub.org,
which we use to provide the mapping from ISO-3166-2 region codes to their
English names. We have put together a script that then takes all of those
names and attempts to auto-'translate' them by checking the name against the
 interwiki language links API.

We can easily override the automatic 'translations' that we have. If you'd
like to do it yourself, you should fork the repository on github, follow the
instructions in the readme file, and submit a pull request:
 https://github.com/awjrichards/WLM-ISO-3166-2

Alternatively, you can file a bug in bugzilla with a mapping of ISO-3166-2
region codes to regional names, and we can get the translations added when
 we are able.

All of the WMF staff will be busy in our annual all-staff meetings for the
rest of the week, so forgive us if we are unable to respond as quickly as
 usual.

 Thanks!
 Arthur

Hi Arthur,

Thanks for the response. Since the only Android device I have access
to is a Kindle, which does not support your application, I need a
little more guidance.

Where are those names used in the application? Would it make more
sense to have them translated as COUNTY_NAME or COUNTY_NAME
county? A screenshot would be greatly appreciated.

2012-09-07 Thread Strainu
2012/9/8 Maarten Dammers maar...@mdammers.nl:
 Hi guys,

I'm doing some clean up. First I try to add identifier templates to as many
images as possible because that's the basis of all magic.

That's good. Thing is, I've had a bot request for the exact same
thing, and noticed that you miss lots of images. You might want to
check out
https://code.google.com/p/wikiro/source/browse/trunk/robots/python/pywikipedia/monumente/add_template_to_images.py
and see what's different.

Second problem is actually a warning: don't use categories as either
source or destination of monument ids (for Romania). They're currently
a mess that needs to be sorted out manually.

Based on that I have been working on improving and expanding the automatic
categorization. While doing that I ran into a lot of countries that needed
 some extra attention:
 * In the US I added over 2000 Commonscat links
 *
 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Historical_monuments_in_Romania
contained over 6000 images, I sorted that out. Also someone created a
template that categorized images. That's frowned upon at Commons so I added
the images directly to the category and fixed the template.

It might be frowned upon, but it is still the easiest way to
categorize this many images - if you add the same category manually
and then we realize that the code is wrong, we'll need to change 2
things instead of one, increasing the chance of mistakes. I personally
disagree with these edits.

In Romania we have a rudimentary check in the {{Monument istoric}}

 Dear All,

I have to announce that Hungary can not participate in WLM this year.
I am very-very sad and upset about it, and I terrible sorry.

Before summer I sent an e-mail to the president of the National Office of
Cultural Heritage, but I didn't get any answer for weeks.
After two weeks I called the secretary about my e-mail, and I got to know
that the president has resigned by 1st of July, and she didn't want to sign
a new contract in her last weeks (but she left a note about her support on
 it).
The new president was appointed in July, but in his first weeks he didn't
want to deal with our contract.
As soon as I arrived back from the US (Wikimania) I sent an e-mail to the
new president about our co-operation, but I didn't get any answer for many
 days.
When I called the secretary I got to know that the team prepared our
contract last year was on holiday, after that the president went to holiday
 until 21 of August.
After this day, I called the secretary and legal department daily, and on 27
of August there was a meeting where they discussed about our contract, but
the president didn't decide about it.
Then I called them every day, but I got a call yesterday, that the president
is very busy and hasn't got time for this co-operation now.
 This is Hungary in 2012...

I wish you a big success and an extremely good competition for WLM 2012, I
will follow it during the next weeks.

For some images we could build a repository that releases images to
commons on specific dates. I have hundreds of images that I can only release
now on a limited license, but in a few decades or maybe a century could be
broadened to PD. But I think for Italy we need to see the law changed.

If we want to build up our image library of lost monuments then WLM is
perhaps not the best place to start. Rather than a photo hunt for what is
available today we need a hunt through attics for things available from the
past. Much was destroyed in the war, and quite a bit since. Even where
buildings survived and were restored often the stained glass windows were
lost. But there are copyright issues when the photographers died in recent
decades. I would like to load some of my grandfather's photographs, and I
think that my Mother would have sole inheritance rights to his copyrights,
but with one of her uncles it gets more complex.

 performed a quick
review of which WLM websites embed code from a third party.

I am considering third-party a webserver controlled by someone else than
 the WLM
organiser group, another chapter or the WMF.
So it is ok to include an image from your own website,
 wikilovesmonuments.org or
upload.wikimedia.org, as is to include the international piwik stats

But it would not be ok to include facebook javascript for instance.

The WLM skin includes a dead image to www.visuelya.de, which should

 considered it a third-party.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] List of wlm websites including third-party content

2012-08-29 Thread Strainu
There are a bunch of unanswered questions about piwik that make me not
want to use it:

Do you offer any guarantees on the uptime or stress-performance of the
system? Do you offer any way to import past data from Google
Analytics? Is there any guarantee that you're following data
protection rules in the country where the server is installed? Does
that law even allow private persons to access the data (that's
especially doubtful, as it is probably in the EU)? What happens to the
piwik installation after the contest ends?

I'd much rather go along with the known problems of GA rather than
explore unchartered waters. But most of all, my problem is: why didn't
anyone have a problem with those last year, as we were using both GA
and Facebook then, but not it suddenly became such a huge (non-)issue.

Also, I don't know about the universalsubtitles thingie, but removing
the Facebook box would not serve us at all, since most of the
promotion was done on Facebook.

If none of you will be willing to set a Central Notice for wlm.ro, we
can always use alternative promotion means.

2012/8/29 Tomasz W. Kozłowski odder.w...@gmail.com:
 Hi Strainu,
indeed there is no policy about (not) allowing links from
CentralNotice banners to websites using third party analytics systems,
just as I wrote in my offlist e-mail to you.

I can only provide you with an opinion of a Wikimedia Foundation Legal
and Community Advocacy team member, who is deeply uncomfortable about
us linking to websites using Google Analytics, and therefore giving
our users' very sensitive data to a third company for free.

I would very much like to avoid any controversies and arguments with
regard to this subject; we have installed and configured Piwik for
your use specifically to keep our users' data safe, and am (yet again)
urging you to do use this opportunity.

So that the user is sent to the local website in the appropiate language.

To the page in English language, of course :)

For instance, we provide the url as http://www.wikilm.es/$lang/ and the
 users are sent to:
 http://www.wikilm.es/es/
 http://www.wikilm.es/en/

Oh, OK, my understanding was that you want to send people with
uselang=fr but located in Romania to wikilovesmonuments.fr, which
doesn't make a lot of sense.

Still, your idea doesn't scale well without changes to the server
configuration, which I'm not sure is possible on all the websites
(e,g, Spain will need to have /es, /en, /cat and possibly /fr, /pt
etc.). I think that as long as the pages in other languages are
visibly linked from the main page, we're ok with redirecting to the
main page of the site.

I didnt perceive it as a problem last year. Two wiki solutions that work
 quite well:
 1. Navigation templates. See for example my home list
 https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llista_de_monuments_del_Maresme
It is a comarca with larger municipalities splited. A customazed TOC
facilitates navigation within the comarca and a footer navigation template
 for other lists.
 2. A search button at https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/P:WLM facilitates
searching all lists with title prefixed Llista de monuments...

Thanks Vicenç, your example looks pretty interesting and easy to
navigate. I also love the pictures you used for category and upload,
they're much nicer than what I've seen elsewhere, I think I'll steal
them. :)

It is still a variation from the official Romanian rules for
organizing the list, but given they are absolutely crazy (2 monuments
with successive ids and placed on the same parcel of land can end up
far away in the list) and given that I've already used such an
approach for Bucharest, I think I'll go with splitting the lists by
comună.

Ideally it would be tagged with a safe to migrate to commons after
date. OK in some cases it will be many decades before those images can
migrate, but there is no deadline and we can afford to think longterm.

It would also be less bitey on commons if some images could be
temporarily moved to this holding bay rather than deleted. It should
even be possible to build this into the image uploader.

 Create jail.wikimedia.org ?

Creating it under the WMF umbrella is unlikely, as the WMF only
supports free content.

However, I have been thinking for a while about creating a NC image

has the slightest sign that the WMF would approve of its use as 3rd

I'm unsure about that. If wikipedias were going to use it, the WMF would
probably want to host a local mirror anyway.

And hence my doubt over the actual approval of such a project. It
could be worth bringing it up in another forum, though, I'm just not
sure where.

Each interested wikipedia would have to approve a nonfree use rationale
guideline, which allowed them to use a subset of that wiki files (eg.
those which are free on their countries but not on US).

With regards to FOP, at least for buildings, it would be the other way
around: free in the US and non-free in their country. That will
probably make it somewhat more acceptable to the legal department

It would also be a very appropiate solution for the troubles generated
by the URAA producing retroactive copyright.

For using those PD-Non-US images, I guess WMF would still require a Fair
Use rationale for each of the used images, maybe some general «low-res
usage in educational articles» (ie. main-ns) could pass, I'm not sure.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] How to choose where to do a Wiki Takes? (was: Where to do a Wiki Takes?)

2012-06-28 Thread Strainu
When I saw the subject of this email, I thought this was a discussion
on how to choose a route for a photo walk. Since it wasn't that, I
thought I start one :)

When we made the plans for Wiki Takes Bucharest, we took into account
several criteria:
* the area should be poorly covered on commons
* the walk time should not exceed 15-20 minutes for each hour planned
for the photo walk (i.e. you have 3/4 of the time to take photos)
*a back-up/alternative route should exist, in case the main route is
blocked or you have too many participants.
* all routes should begin and end in the same place (the biggest the
crowd, the better the beer :D)

What else should one consider in preparation of such an event?

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] The Europeana Awareness project and Wikimedia Sweden

2012-05-23 Thread Strainu
2012/5/23 John Andersson johnandersso...@hotmail.com:
 Sorry for cross-posting.

 Dear everybody,

My name is John Andersson and I have recently been hired by Wikimedia Sweden
(WMSE) as the Event manager for the project Europeana Awareness[1], a
project that amongst other things has the goal of creating a closer
cooperation between the Europeana Foundation (and its vast network of GLAM
institutions) and the Wikimedia community and by doing so increase awareness
of the work done by Europeana (hence the project name). The project leader
for WMSE's part of the Europeana Awareness is Lennart Guldbrandsson, a.k.a.
User:Hannibal, who many of you already know. I will however be responsible
 for the day-to-day operations.

First of all I would like to give you a short presentation about myself so
that you know who I am (if this understandably bores you, you can skip the
following paragraph) and secondly I will present the projects that I will
work with during the coming 18 months.

I will start working full time on the 11th of June but until then I am
working merely 35 percent as I am currently at the very end of my university
studies at the Master programme in European Studies at Gothenburg
University, finishing up my Master's thesis that focuses on decision-making
in the Arctic Council's working groups. This time last year I worked as a
trainee at the European Parliament's Secretariat in Brussels for 5.5 months
and from before that I have a Bachelor of Science from Umeå University.
During my Bachelor I spent one semester in the U.S. as an exchange student.
I have been an administrator on the Swedish language version for 6 years now
and have contributed with hundreds of articles and photos. On a more
personal note I enjoy learning new things, experiencing new cultures,
traveling, meeting friends and reading a good book.

Two major tasks that I will work with are firstly the co-organization of a
number of GLAM conferences in some of the European countries that have
active Wikimedia Chapters that are working with GLAM issues, as well as to
organize a European wide competition called Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA),
obviously inspired by the super successful Wiki Loves Monument competition.

I am hoping to help in organizing events in Sweden, Poland, UK, France,
Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Currently I am working on organizing
the first event, an Edit-a-thon in Leuven, Belgium.[2] If you are planning
to organize a GLAM event in any of these countries I hope that you will take
the opportunity to contact me and discuss how I could help! For example,
adding Europeana as a partner for the event that you are organizing is
likely to open new doors and attract more institutions and I am the one to
contact about that, I could also help out with man-hours, perhaps supply you
with information, contacts and digitized media that Europeana already has
(which could be hard and time consuming to collect) or suggest and contact
international guests that could participate in your event.

The organization of Wiki Loves Public Art will mainly take place later this
year. But even though this event is far in the future I hope that you write
me an email if you think that this sounds interesting and would like to get
involved in this work. I am well aware that this will take a lot of time and
effort to organize so we might as well start with some initial planning as
 soon as possible!

I am super excited about working with this full time and I really look
forward meeting and talking with all of you!

 Sincerely,

 John Andersson

Hi John [and hello again to everybody from the WLM list],

It is nice to hear about new initiatives born from WLM. What exactly
do you understand by public art? Are we talking about art forms which
sit in the public space, like statues in a square, or about something
else?

Is your job description limited to GLAM events and countries with
chapters? We in Romania have neither, and the flow of information has
so far been mostly reversed (e.g. the WLM photos from Romania are
going to be uploaded to Europeana), but I would personally appreciate
suggestions about how to use more effectively the material that
Europeana already has (especially the meta-data, which IMO is a
heavily underused CC-0 database).

While some valid points have been raised in these discussions, there
was also a lot of bullshit (pardon my language, but there is no other
way of putting it) from some people who can't look beyond the current
project. It would be unfair from me to respond to those here, but I
will most certainly respond onwiki as time allows.

What I do note as something that could easily be avoided is having
ten more crappy images of the Eiffel Tower in order to get some more
obscure monuments on-wiki. I strongly suggest that in countries that
participate in WLM2011 we limit the eligible monuments to those
without an image.

In order to do this, we need better tools. I'm currently working on a
robot that can fill the lists automatically based on the articles that
contain a specific monument-id, and also searches for mistakes in the
lists. I certaily hope I'll be able to make it work for other
countries and I also hope that Nuno, Maarten, Platonides and the rest
of the folks that gave us those great reporting tools will also find
the time to develop tools for improving the usage of the newly
uploaded pictures.

Then you could just make a list of ineligible monuments. The problem

multiple monuments with the same code. In Romania, this is solved by
appending 2 more digits at the end of the code. Perhaps you could

As I am not an art expert, i'm using external information to track

I'm not familiar with flickr programming.
Is there a framework which already provides the function so you just

Hmmm...apparently not.[1] It's probably because you don't
authenticate with user/pass when using the API. However, I have
discovered a greasemonkey script [2] that's able to send flickr mails,
so I guess making a JS that put a validate the picture button under

Which part lacks in the flickr api?

I'm not familiar with flickr programming.
Is there a framework which already provides the function so you just
 need to do
eg. flick_send_msg('Strainu', You uploaded a lot of copyvios\n)

 Hmmm...apparently not.[1]  It's probably because you don't
authenticate with user/pass when using the API. However, I have
discovered a greasemonkey script [2] that's able to send flickr mails,
so I guess making a JS that put a validate the picture button under
each queued picture should not be that hard. However, I've caught my

2011-09-15 Thread Strainu
Hi Maarten,

I can put my code on the svn tonight, but if you're thinking about
using your usual flickr transfer bot for all the languages, I don't
think it meets the requirements that we have here at WLM.

In our group, some users don't make adequate descriptions of the
photo, but rather use that field for publicity of their profiles on
different websites. This means that the bug MUST be supervised by a
human who speaks the language of the groups. So while my code can put
the relevant categories and templates, it should be run by individuals
from each country.

Furthermore, there are some groups, like WLM ES, that do not seem to
filter the pictures in the group, so they must be filtered at least
when uploaded on Commons. (I might have misunderstood some of their
messages, in which case I apologise)

Thanks,
  Strainu

[Wiki Loves Monuments] How do we identify errors in the uploaded pictures?

2011-09-07 Thread Strainu
Hi,

How do you guys check if there are errors in the uploaded images and
if the pictures are eligible to participate? Manually checking all the
images is a little bit tedious for Romania (350 pictures), I don't
even want to think what it would mean in France or Switzerland. Still,
it will need to be done at some time.

To make my life easier, I created [[Category:Cultural heritage
monuments in Romania with errors]], where I place all the monuments
that have obvious mistakes in the monument ID. What other filters do
you have in place?

I'm also thinking that maybe in the future we should have some
JavaScript checks on the value introduced in the monument ID field.

Thanks,
  Strainu

bit to get images from the different Flickr pools. What pools do we
have? Can someone make an overview at Commons?

 Hi,

Is anyone running a customized bot to upload images from flickr groups
to commons that can introduce all the necessary info in the page?
Looks like Flickrripper [1] is suitable for the job.

 Thanks,
  Strainu
