[Wikimedia-l] WMIL General Assembly meeting and Board Elections
Dear all, This last Monday, 1.12.14, Wikimedia Israel (WMIL) held a general assembly meeting, during which the members held the elections for members of the Board of WMIL. The results of the elections are as follows: Itzik Edri,(reelected) Deror Lin, (reelected) Ido Ivri, (reelected) Hana Yariv, Yan Nasonov (reelected) The new Board then proceeded to reelect Itzik Edri to Chairman, and to elect Ido Ivri as Board Secretary. In addition, the board will re-approach the two external board members, Prof. Sheizaf Rafaeli and Prof. Karine Nahon, to stay with the board for another year and keep providing their excellent mentorship and advice. We would like to take this opportunity and extend our many thanks to Yael Meron, the departing Board Member, for her long and good service to WMIL and its community. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising banners (again)
Just as an aside - tweets about the fundraiser don't appear to be the best source for informed commentary: https://twitter.com/search?f=realtimeq=wikipedia%20donationssrc=typd Examples: Wikipedia is begging for $3 donations? That screams 'Hey, we're in a little trouble over here'. Silly Wikipedia. A service is no longer free once donations are needed to keep it free. Perhaps it would be a good idea to reply to some of the comments via official accounts? [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Italia Executive Director
Hello everybody, It's with great pleasure that I announce Giuliana Mancini as the new Executive Director of Wikimedia Italia. It took us over 6 months to select her within a pool of 450 candidates: it has been an incredibly hard work, and tough decisions were made. I'd like to acknowledge that one of the most active members of the selective committee was Alessio Guidetti aka Cotton, who recendly passed: it saddens us to know that he won't have the chance to see her working with us. But this is a moment of joy, because the Wikimedia family just got a new member. Giuliana will help us become a more mature and structured association: her deep experience and competence will be used to for make Wikimedia Italia scale and increase its impact in the world of free and open knowledge. Before being appointed Executive Director at Wikimedia Italia, in the last 12 years, she has covered several roles of increasing commitment in the field of arts and culture. She spent 9 years in a grant making foundation where she supervised the activities of a cello academy and the concerts of an ensemble of classical musicians, assisting the board in setting strategies and coordinating the comprehensive management. She participated in the board of a company in the field of Fine Arts with a mandate for promotion of a multimedia exhibition, creating strategic relationship with Italian and foreigner museums. She drafted several feasibility studies and business plans for theatres and other cultural institutions as well as for start up companies. She can speak English fluently and has a good understanding of Spanish and French, and she graduated in Economics and in Law (her second degree was completed while working). She was officially introduced to the Wikimedia Italia assembly this Saturday, and this is her second week of work. Please welcome her in our incredible Wikimedia movement. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising banners (again)
Lila - thank you for this thoughtful update. Fundraising trends and data are always welcome, particularly where communities can help improve and test local messages. I am also deeply thankful for the smooth work of the fundraising team, who have made great progress over the last few years – in storytelling translation, mobile giving, testing data analysis. I look forward to seeing what we learn this year. Sam On Tue, Dec 2, 2014 at 1:53 AM, Lila Tretikov l...@wikimedia.org wrote: All -- we will not have a pop-up banner. I know you want more insight into the trends: we will provide some of those in our upcoming reports and metrics and we will plan to shift to a quarterly cadence of a more specific metrics report that will include fundraising. Just to cover some basic trends: the last two years have significantly changed our traffic composition. Regionally, we are seeing growth in emerging languages and regions. This is great: people who need the knowledge most, but cannot afford it and often live in countries where free speech is criminalized are learning about Wikipedia. We need to keep supporting that. In Europe, North America, Australia, etc. we see Wikipedia becoming a part of the fabric of the internet itself: embedded in web searches, operating systems, and other online resources. This is great too: people get knowledge wherever they are. Both of those trends however can make it more difficult to raise funds (and sometimes contribute), so we have to make sure we adapt. We are doing a lot of work around thinking through a diversified fundraising strategy. That said, our main tool today are the site banners. Just to be clear: the pop-up banner had advantages. It tested high with readers, was only shown once to each user and cut the total number of impressions needed by a factor of 7! We did hear your concerns however. The Fundraising team listened and quickly integrated your feedback. While our launch banner will be different from last year’s, it will not be a pop-up, overlay content, or be sticky. As always this starting design will iterate daily and have parallel tests, so you may see variations at any given time. Megan Hernandez will send another email with more details about the process to-date, and how best to communicate with Fundraising during the coming month. And in the spirit of the holidays I'd like to thank the fundraising team for all of their hard work and to all of the volunteers who have helped with the campaigns. What happened to the near-universal agreement that pop-ups are bad? (a) solicit input from a neutral reputation management consultancy, and Consultants are the reason the fundraising campaigns and associated banners are so awful. To the idea that we continue paying people needlessly for bad advice, I'm going to say no thank you. I'd rather not. (b) create a forum for staffers to talk openly about this matter, without fear of reprisal What's wrong with wikimedia-l? I can assure you that this mailing list has grade-A reprisal, far better than what you'll receive from work. :-) David Gerard wrote: Wikipedia begging for donations per usual. Advertising isn't evil they say as they throw a second nag at me as I scroll down. https://twitter.com/enemyplayer/status/539180814739988481 Indeed. It might help if we started referring to the fundraising banners as full-page advertising. Calling a spade a spade, and all that. It also occurred to me that it wouldn't be unreasonable for Adblock (Plus) to reconsider its classification of the fundraising notices (even banners is generous). Historically banners on Wikimedia wikis have not been considered ads by Adblock and friends, but this assumed decency and common sense on Wikimedia's part. These full-page gremlins lack both. Obnoxious banners *really do damage the brand*. What are the fundraiser metrics? If they don't include effect on the brand, they'll be motivating damaging behaviour. We used to have live-updating statistics about the annual fundraiser at https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Special:FundraiserStatistics. That error message is probably highly misleading and we really ought to have better reporting about donations. As far as I know, we've taken several steps backward in recent years in terms of donation transparency and this should be addressed in 2015. (I'm somewhat hoping someone will quickly prove me wrong with a link to up-to-date donor stats... go on!) MZMcBride

I think on the contrary Wikipedia Zero illustrates nicely why net neutrality is so important: Wikipedia Zero favours solely Wikipedia (und sister projects), while contradicting or simply other opinions and resources bite the dust. This mainstreaming, forming a monopolistic cabal on all things information is why I am a strong proponent of net neutrality. The ease with which information can be shared nowadays should be used so that more people provide their views, not more people consume one view. As far as I know, Wikipedia tries to synthesize several points of view so that we have a neutral approach to a particular topic, not favoring one view over the other. In addition, the fact that you can edit through Wikipedia Zero allows for alternative voices to be heard. I find it hard to believe that Wikipedia Zero stifles NPOV, if you’re hinting at people being forced” to consume only one point of view, when even Wikipedia doesn’t aspire to do that. And I have severe doubts that Wikipedia Zero fulfils actual needs from the perspective of sustainable development. I don’t know about where you’re in, but I can tell you that in the developing world, Wikipedia’s been very helpful in helping us spread the word about the projects. In the Philippines, Wikipedia readership jumped when Wikipedia Zero was rolled out. That’s more readers, and hopefully more editors. We have a good relationship with the Philippines’ largest telecommunications company as a result, and they’ve been very supportive of our efforts to bring knowledge to more Filipinos. And you say that that doesn’t contribute to sustainable development”? I think it’s profoundly important in this discussion that we need to avoid generalizing the world as if everyone’s in Europe or the United States. Yes, net neutrality is important. Yes, I support net neutrality and believe that ISPs shouldn’t discriminate against content providers. But if it means bringing more information to more people, I’m willing to sacrifice that for a while because I think that Filipinos being given access to free information is more valuable — and more important — than what I believe in vis-à-vis net neutrality. I hope everyone else here who doesn’t support Wikipedia Zero because of that will actually see the good that it has done for the developing world, and that the rest of us find great use for this program. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Organizational effectiveness tool (for Wikimedia organizations)
Thank you for this initiative and all the hard work that went into creating these tools and resources! I'm really looking forward to the results and learnings of the next steps. At the moment, from our perspective the biggest challenge of the planned process is to overcome the language barrier: If we want to include our volunteers, especially the non-Board members, we'll have to translate the questionnaire and some general information first. While this is probably doable for German or French quickly enough to meet the deadline on December 21, it might be a major challenge for smaller langugage communities. Would it be possible for interested organizations to get in touch with the Foundation in order to get help in this regard? The project was initiated in response to growing interest and conversations by volunteers and organizations, to better understand how organizations in particular have impact in the Wikimedia movement, which is unique in that it is online, growing extraordinarily fast, and created and supported almost entirely by volunteers. The project seeks to help Wikimedia organizations better understand 1) how impact is defined from an organizational perspective in their contexts, 2) what strategies Wikimedia organizations use to achieve that impact, and 3) what resources and skills Wikimedia organizations may need to be more effective in the strategies they choose to pursue. In the first “impact” stage of the project, TCC interviewed several organizations, administered an impact survey to all organizations, and attended Wikimania 2014 in London where the project was discussed with AffCom, an informal organizational effectiveness working group, the FDC and other grantmaking committees, as well as many other individuals in the movement. [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: New board elected, annual plan postponed.
Dear Wikimedia friends, Wikimedia Deutschland held its General Assembly on Saturday, 29 November 2014. It is with great pleasure that I present to you our new board, for the first time for a two-year term: * Tim Moritz Hector (Chair): Long-time Wikipedian and Wikimedian (re-elected) * Kurt Jansson (Vice Chair): WMDE founder and former president 2004-2009 * Lukas Mezger (Vice Chair): Former WMF legal intern, long time member of the DE community, lawyer * Sebastian Moleski (Treasurer): Former president 2009-2012, highly involved in the international movement, background in economics and IT * Jürgen Friedrich (At-large): Professor of computer science and digital media, very well connected to the academic and institutional world (re-elected) * Harald Krichel (At-large): Long-time Wikipedian * Nikolas Becker (At-large): Former president, highly involved in EU advocacy * Sabria David (At-large): Wikipedia researcher and slow media advocate * Catrin Schoneville (At-large): Former WMDE spokeswoman (2008-2013), well known to the national and international communities and organisations. Anja Ebersbach got re-elected as Vice Chair but decided to step down immediately on the following day. The board has elected Lukas Mezger as her successor. I am very much looking forward to working with these outstanding board members in the coming two years. The diversity in Wikimedia backgrounds and professional experience in our board will provide the foundation for reflection, determination, and the look ahead. I am looking forward to a fruitful exchange with our colleagues from the Wikimedia Foundation and the other Wikimedia Affiliates. The new board would like to extend its thanks to the outgoing board members, Jens Best, Ralf Bösch, Anja Ebersbach, Markus Glaser, Steffen Prößdorf, and Sebastian Wallroth for their dedicated service to the organisation. The General Assembly also discussed our annual plan and the FDC recommendations. They wisely decided to postpone the final decision about the plan and have called for an extraordinary general assembly in Q1 2015. That gives our Executive Director Jan Engelmann and our staff time to reflect on the feedback from the FDC and WMF and to work out an improved annual plan in cooperation with the new board. I am looking forward to leading Wikimedia Deutschland through the next two years that will undoubtedly provide new challenges to the organisation. As we reconsider our strategic focus and our financial underpinnings, I am confident that we will emerge as a stronger partner within the Wikimedia movement. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Organizational effectiveness tool (for Wikimedia organizations)
Gerard, I'm not sure I understand this concern. Data of all kinds are important, but in this case, the questionnaire is meant to help organizations reflect on how they make the strategic choices they do, and what more we can do, as individual organizations and collectively across the movement, to be effective. These questions are not answered by numbers alone, as by context and resource mapping and analysis. Perhaps if you gave me examples of the data you believe we should be collecting/sharing, I would understand better? TCC also conducted in-depth research on three organizations, resulting in case studies illustrating different organizational models leading to impact. Many thanks to those of you who took your valuable time to participate in one or more of these exchanges; Wikimedians around the globe created the foundation for this work. The second and third stages of the project involve development of an online organizational effectiveness questionnaire, a user guide to help organizations interpret their results, and an organizational effectiveness learning center, which may help organizations think about the different strategies they are using and how they could build specific capacities to be more successful with those strategies. *Learning center: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Organizational_effectiveness/Learning_center . *User guide: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Organizational_effectiveness/Tool/User_guide *Questionnaire text: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Organizational_effectiveness/Tool/Questionnaire *Link to take questionnaire (can be used once per IP address, but more links can be requested): https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OEQuestionnaire The learning center is intended to be a base from which Wikimedia organizations can grow their knowledge and share their own experiences and best practices. TCC worked closely with a handful of Wikimedia volunteers from different organizations to design the Questionnaire you are about to take. Wikimedia Foundation has provided funding for this project and has consulted closely with TCC over the course of the engagement. Please note that the questionnaire is not intended to be a test of individual organizations in any way; the Foundation will not be provided with individual organization results. As part of this consultation, TCC will aggregate findings from the movement-wide Organizational Effectiveness Questionnaire and provide them to the Foundation’s grantmaking team, along with a “capacity building roadmap” to help the team - and the wider movement - think about how organizations can build capacity

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Why is bank transfer no longer possible?
That's very interesting. However, as stated, in .nl (and SEPA) one pays people using IBAN accounts. One not-pays people using not-IBAN. iDeal is a handy dandy web interface to do (essentially) IBAN transfers. Them's the options; whether I personally like them or not.[*] c'est tout! Incidentally, for a SEPA area bank transfer, at a typical .nl bank, you fill in the person's name, their IBAN Account Number [**], and the amount; then click send. [***]. [] Re:Fraud: one bank I work for has the policy to hunt down, find, and prosecute every single fraud at all costs, and to the fullest extent possible under law. They do so as a matter of honour. Suffice to say this does tend to reduce the incidence of fraud in the country O:-) sincerely, Kim Bruning [*] Actually I kinda like these options; but I do live just ~2 hours from Brussels, so things tend to work well for me. I'm not talking about people using the IBAN to steal money out of a Wikimedia account, I depend on the bank to have security robust enough to prevent that. The scenario I'm discussing involves people using the IBAN to fraudulently pay money to Wikimedia from someone else's account, such as a credit card. That account does not necessarily have an IBAN or chip-and-pin security, and at any rate whatever security it has was already breached. The payment would just be a method for the fraudsters to verify the success of the breach. The result would be added costs to Wikimedia and to the financial institutions involved, in order to identify and reverse the fraudulent transactions. To respond to some of the other questions raised about my scenario: This was a risk scenario I presented to answer the question, How can posting a bank account number lead to fraud? It may or may not have been a factor in the decision to not publicly post the IBAN, I don't know. I'm also not suggesting that this scenario is unique to IBAN, it could affect any type of account number that accepts payments (for example, accounts you might have for various utility services, such as water, electricity, telephone, or internet). It's also possible thru PayPal, of course, and that's the reason for having a $1 minimum donation requirement, among other protections. I don't know if there are difficulties with establishing comparable security around the IBAN, or if it's more a matter of a cost-benefit analysis indicating that it's worth the resources to deal with this for donations via Wikimedia's online payment form, but not for donations directly to Wikimedia's bank account. Also, I'm no expert on EU regulations, but I do observe that according to the European Payments Council, it seems payees receiving SEPA credit transfers are advised to communicate the IBAN only where necessary: http://www.europeanpaymentscouncil.eu/index.cfm/sepa-credit- transfer/iban-and-bic/ (and likewise for payers making direct debit payments). It may simply be that the fundraising team has been advised that this is more consistent with providing the IBAN upon request, rather than posting it on the website. [Wikimedia-l] Funding a new gear for WM photographer Poco a poco
Sorry for crossposting: Help one of the best volunteer photographers in Wikimedia Commons restore his stolen equipment. Diego Delso is known as Poco a poco in Wikimedia Commons. In case you don't know, Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository where anyone can share freely-licensed content with everyone. Wikipedia uses Wikimedia Commons as it's image repository, so, in fact, most of the times you view an image in Wikipedia, you are actually viewing a Wikimedia Commons image. While Diego is just one of the thousands of Wikimedia Commons volunteers, he is a very special one: he's one of the main Commons contributors ever, having some amazing records, such as being the user with the highest amount of Featured Pictures ever (153 images) and also the one with the highest amount of quality images ever, with 5,777 Quality Images. That's an awesome amount of very high quality material, that Diego has given to every living person for free. Never heard about Wikimedia Commons? It's the repository that hosts allmultimedia files that you can see (and download) in Wikipedia and all other Wikimedia projects. Diego's files are used in those projects and are also available for everybody else with a free license. Furthermore, Diego has contributed in Wikimedia Commons in other ways. One of them is by supporting (by being an organizer or a jury) two of the most importantphotographic contests in the Wikimedia movement (and in the world!): Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth. Sadly, while Diego was in Buenos Aires after participating in a Wikimedia Iberoamerican Encounter with other Wikimedia volunteers, he got his equipment stolen. In this unfortunate event, he didn't only lost his camera, zoom lenses and laptop, but also every single picture he took during his 2 weeks trip in South America, which he was going to upload to Wikimedia Commons so they could be used by everyone, everywhere. As Wikimedia volunteers and Diego's friends, we could not stand aside of this, so we decided to help him to restore his equipment. You can help, too, by contributing to this campaign! Our goal is simple: to collect enough money to help Diego to buy exactly the same equipment he lost. All the gear he lost in Argentina is described below, with a reference to the price from Amazon for the same equipment. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fundraising banners (again)
Hi all, As Lila’s email said, we launched our end of year English fundraising campaign on Tuesday. I wanted to share a little more background on the mechanics of the English Wikipedia campaign, and where we are on our goals this year to-date. Starting today, banners are being shown to 100% of anonymous readers on English Wikipedia in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Our end of year campaign goal is $20 million. As Lila mentioned, our goal is to serve more powerful reminders to be able to limit the total number of banners each reader sees. We are constantly experimenting with new methods to reach our readers and optimize the donation experience. Around the world, banners have been showing to a low level of traffic since the start of the fiscal year in July. We have also run campaigns to 100% of traffic in Japan, South Africa, Malaysia, Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Belgium, and France. These campaigns have shown good results, and we look forward to sharing more detail in our regular annual fundraising report. If you spot any errors or have problems donating, your can reach us quickly at: problemsdonat...@wikimedia.org We also anticipate some of you will want to know more about this process and may have questions. If you have questions or comments, please let us know on our Meta talk page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Fundraising We look forward to answering your questions to the best of our ability, but the team has limited resources and everyone will be working at an increased pace in December, particularly during the launch week (12/2-12/5). Unfortunately, this means we will not be able to respond to questions on Wikimedia-l as they arise -- so instead we have set aside time to review your questions on Meta, and post an update by December 15 and again in January. Thank you again for all your support now and throughout the year! Megan On Tue, Dec 2, 2014 at 12:53 AM, Samuel Klein meta...@gmail.com wrote: Lila - thank you for this thoughtful update. This year, as usual, is not an exception. However, this year the banners didn't just get bigger, the copy seems to be more fear inducing as well. Today I had a coworker private message me, worried that Wikipedia was in financial trouble. He asked me if the worst happened, would the content still be available so that it could be resurrected? I assured him that Wikimedia is healthy, has reserves, and successfully reaches the budget every year. Basically I said there wasn't much to worry about, because there isn't. The messaging being used is actively scaring people. This isn't the first person that's asked me about this. When they find out there's not a real problem, their reaction quickly changes. They become angry. They feel manipulated. My coworker told me that he donates generously every year, which is rare for him because he doesn't often donate to charities. He said this year's ads are putting him off. He doesn't feel like he should donate. I understand that efficient banner ads are good, because they reduce the number of times people need to see the ad, but it's not great when people stop posting funny banner memes and start asking Wikimedia to switch to an advertising model (seriously, do a quick twitter search). - Ryan Lane ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Funding a new gear for WM photographer Poco a poco
(Sorry for crossposting) This is indeed a cause that the entire community should get behind. I know that normally people could apply for grants but is there anyway that the WMF as an organisation could bypass that often long, drawn out process and pitch in with this as well? I have sent out a few appeals to avgeeks, seeing as he has taken aviation photos, via twitter and other avenues. Perhaps we can get a tweet from @wikicommons on this as well. It's in all of our best interests to get Poco a Poco taking photos again as soon as is possible. And I hope that insurance will be taken out on the equipment when replaced :) Cheers Russavia On Wed, Dec 3, 2014 at 7:18 AM, Santi Navarro santiagonava...@wikimedia.org.es wrote: Sorry for crossposting: Help one of the best volunteer photographers in Wikimedia Commons restore his stolen equipment. Not what you asked, but UNESCO's recent leaflet is rather nice and has a dozen pages on impact. http://www.unesco.de/fileadmin/medien/Dokumente/Kommunikation/Open_Content_A_Practical_Guide_to_Using_Open_Content_Licences_web.pdf James Heilman, 02/12/2014 21:20: We would welcome sharing with us some evidence-based research on how licensing works under the Creative Commons attribution licence has made an impact in the area of scientific, technical and medical publishing.
