Hello all,

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees election
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2024>.
6000 community members from more than 180 wiki projects have voted.

The following four candidates were the most voted:

 * Christel Steigenberger
 * Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz
 * Victoria Doronina
 * Lorenzo Losa

While these candidates have been ranked through the vote, they still
need to be appointed to the Board of Trustees. They need to pass a
successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the
Bylaws. New trustees will be appointed at the next Board meeting in
December 2024.

nomination process.

Let's go with the broader definition from (en) Wiktionary - "A process
of choosing ... or other representatives by popular vote.", or even
beyond the first sentence from en Wikipedia - "To elect means "to choose
or make a decision", and so sometimes other forms of ballot such as
referendums are referred to as elections, especially in the United States.".

This is not correct. There was no "community election"; the community
is only empowered to /nominate/ candidates, which the board may or may
not appoint, at its whim.

Please be more careful to use accurate terms on such points, in the future.

Multiple people put themselves forward for the community considerations.
The community then voted on it, resulting in a ranking by who got most
votes based on the voting system used. By definition, that's an
election. The electoral consisted of members of the Wikimedia community.
Ergo, there was a community election.

That the winning candidates does not automatically become a member of
the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees as a result due (at least
partly) to legal reasons does not make it any less of an election.

"A vote by the Wikimedia community for X numbers of winners to be
considered by the WMF BoT for appointment as its members" is still an
election.

Katie

been developed to address the exceptional cases when a Wikimedia movement
affiliate does not meet basic compliance standards and their continued
recognition as a Wikimedia movement affiliate presents a risk to the
Wikimedia movement.

On September 9, 2016, Wikimedia Hong Kong was notified of their suspension
as a Wikimedia affiliate due to long standing non-compliance with reporting
requirements, and was provided with an explicit list of tasks and deadlines
in order to return to compliance with their chapter agreement. The chapter
failed to complete these tasks by the deadline of November 1, 2016, and was
consequently notified that they would no longer be recognized as a
Wikimedia chapter after the termination of their Chapter Agreement on
February 1, 2017.

If you have questions about what this means for the community members in

[Wikimedia-l] Call for Elections Committee members

2017-02-03 Thread Katie Chan

Hello all,

The Wikimedia Foundation StandingElections Committee is, from today
until February 17, seeking additional members to help facilitate
Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustee and Funds Dissemination Committee
elections. This is a volunteer role and the appointment is for two
years. Please note that, while you are a member of the Committee, you
will not be able to run for any election overseen by the Committee –
this includes the upcoming 2017 Board and FDC elections and any other
election where the committee had already begun formal preparation before
your departure. You will also be restricted in your ability to publicly
advocate for community members running in those elections.

The Elections Committee has the following duties, as defined by a July
2015 Board Resolution
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Elections_Committee>:

 *

The Committee shall recommend the dates, rules, and regulation of
the voting procedures for approval by the Board of Trustees pursuant
to Article IV, Section 3(C) in the Foundation Bylaws
   <https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Bylaws%7CWikimedia>.

 *

The Committee shall recommend who is qualified to vote for the Board
of Trustees pursuant to Article IV, Section 3(C) in the Wikimedia
   Foundation Bylaws <https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Bylaws>.

 *

The Committee shall be responsible for preparing recommendations for
the dates, rules and regulation of the voting procedures for the
   Funds Dissemination Committee
   <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Funds_Dissemination_Committee>,
and the Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson, consistent with
the charter of the Funds Dissemination Committee.

 *

To the extent possible, the Committee shall consult with the wider
Wikimedia community in developing and revising election procedures
within the scope of this charter.

 *

The Committee shall be a source of information to any member of the
Wikimedia community interested in the community selection processes
   of the Wikimedia Foundation.

 *

Under the direction of the Board Governance Committee, the Committee
shall take actions as necessary to execute the selection process for
the Board of Trustees, the Funds Dissemination Committee, and the
   Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson.

 *

As needed, the Committee may assist with other duties as may be
assigned by the Board or the Board Governance Committee.

In practice, a member's duties involve communicating with the global
committee who help to steward Board and FDC Elections. During an
election period – one of which is over the next three to four months –
this will be especially important as you help to run the upcoming
elections for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees and the Funds
Dissemination Committee. During this period, members of the Elections
Committee meet for semi-regular meetings to discuss the current election.

However, this appointment is not just for election periods. Outside of
the election season you will lead community discussions on election
process and advise the Board of Trustees Governance Committee
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_Governance_Committee>as
requested, such as in their search for appointed board members. The
expected time commitment can range from around 10 hours a week during an
election to one or two hours outside of the election period.

If you'd like to apply please send an email to
bec-newmemb...@lists.wikimedia.org with:

 *

   Your username;

 *

A brief summary of your Wikimedia related experience and any other
   experience you think may be useful along with;

 *

Why you're interested in the role and a quick statement saying you
   understand the requirements.

Given the private information that committee members handle, candidates
must be 18 years of age or older, and be willing to sign the
confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Confidentiality_agreement_for_nonpublic_information>if
they haven't already. You can view information on how to sign this on
Meta-Wiki
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Confidentiality_agreement_for_nonpublic_information/How_to_sign>.

As much as possible we want the committee to represent the diversity of
the Wikimedia movement so if you're interested please apply! If you know
of others, not on this list, who may want to apply please feel free to
forward.

KTC,

On behalf of the Elections Committee

Luis and our teams were tasked with many recent community initiatives, such
as the creation of the Community Tech team, gender-related and
anti-harassment programs, and improved alignment of WMF annual planning
with the Funds Dissemination Committee. Prior to that, as Deputy General
Counsel he was responsible for a number of legal initiatives, including
licensing, contracts, and product counseling. I’m grateful for his counsel,
and his leadership in the WMF movement throughout these years.

Later this month, Luis will transition out of his current position with the
Wikimedia Foundation to pursue other opportunities. He will remain in a
consulting role with the Foundation over the next few months, continuing to
support our ongoing strategy and annual planning processes.

I want to thank Luis for his commitment to the WMF mission, and for the
inspired energy and contributions he has brought to our movement. I’m
looking forward to his future accomplishments and staying in close touch as
he grows in his career.

Maggie Dennis will step in as the interim director for the CE team
effective immediately. Her deep community background, passion for our
mission, and outstanding teamwork are great assets in this transition. She
will also continue to serve as Director of Support and Safety. Maggie is a
respected leader, colleague, and community member. I am confident she will
bring critical insights, especially now as we plan for our next year.

The work of of the CE department will continue as planned, and the overall
structure of the department (including the Community Tech team, which will
continue to report into the Product organization) will stay on-course. Our
goal is to ensure a smooth transition as we continue our progress to
improve the WMF support for our communities.

It is my priority that the WMF continues to build upon the initiatives we
started in 2015 in support for the global Wikimedia community. Continued
leadership of the Community Engagement department at executive level in the
WMF is a part of delivering on those commitments. We will be looking to
fill the Community Engagement leadership role with someone with a strong
background in community programs, and an understanding of the Wikimedia
movement. We will also look to engage with you to find the right person for
this role. We will send an update on the next steps and the job description

going-ons in the form of the Signpost or what's happening in the
Wikimedia GLAM movement are relevant/interesting to many. If you are
sure that never applies to you, pressing delete/ignore/read 5 times a
month aren't that taxing. A hint, you'll probably end up with more email
in this thread alone than you get in a month things you don't care about
in the announce list.

announce only really big announcements that interest me or require my

There's also a risk similar to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Cried_Wolf that really significant

to the less significant ones.

Can someone take it to heart? If it continues, I'll have to unsubscribe from

It has been a privilege to work with so many exceptional people over the

service of that phrase - "the sum of human knowledge" - were magical. I'll
never forget them, and I've been honored to be a part of this movement.

But it's time for me to move on.

As many of you know, for the last couple of years, I've struggled with my

need to step back and focus on healing, and then look around for new and
exciting opportunities.

When Sue left, she said that her decision process included looking around
and taking stock of the people and the condition of the Foundation, and
asking herself "Is it safe? If I leave, is it safe?" and when she knew it
was, she began to consider the idea.

I've been doing the same, obviously focused on projects and programs that
are important to me. And I look around and I know that with the
contributors that we have - brilliant, dedicated, passionate people and
the staff that we have - dynamic, talented, devoted, and fearless it's
safe. So it's time for me to move on, and to leave it to them.

As a housekeeping note: I've agreed with Luis that I'll be available until

As far as I can remember, that's not something that's collected. A list
of eligible voters are created and fed to the software, which either let
or don't let someone vote. All votes are recorded the same regardless of
how someone is qualified to vote, which may of course be via more than
one way.

at the end it is very simple. the one who produces software has a conflict

And the editor community are not in the best position to decide what are

[Wikimedia-l] Accounts on the Wikimedia UK wiki

Dear all,

As you may be aware, Wikimedia UK
wiki<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Main_Page>was migrated from WMF

September. If you previously had an account on the old wiki, but have not

With the aid <https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56938> of the

days or as soon as possible thereafter. If you haven't gotten your password
to an account on the new wiki yet by that point, and especially if your
account is not unified <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Unified_login>,
then we will have no way of confirming your identity and you will require a
new account.

I rather liked the idea of partial scholarships in past years since it
would allow more people to attend on the same budget when practical.

Can I ask why this was decided against this year?

Per the FAQ[1]:

"The low acceptance rate of partial scholarships and overhead in
reimbursing for partial scholarships for Wikimania 2013

that the funds would be better spent in offering more full scholarships."

I hope that helps.

Simple solution - until someone else volunteers to host the
conference, just have it in the same place every year. You can work
out distribution of funding independently from where it is actually
held. Since WMDE seems to be in the driver seat, having a backup plan
of a conference in Germany seems like a smart idea. That might
privilege people with easy travel to Germany, but well organized
affiliates can always propose a plan to host it elsewhere.

It wouldn't be too bad to have a recurring conference in a fixed
location. The staff setting it up won't need to overcome issues
related to lack of experience, relationships with vendors and venues
can be normalized, attendees can depend on the quality and standards
of the event, and participants can expect a higher level of content
because other potential distractions are eliminated.

It *was* held in the same country (namely Germany) every year
previously, until Italy hosted it this year. I presume the idea of
changing was so we *don't* have it at the same place every year so that
affiliates far from Germany don't have to travel as far some years
(though Italy isn't necessarily that far away from Germany this year).
Also possibly funding issue as WMDE don't necessarily want to bear the
cost of the whole conference every year.

Italy applied to the WMF Grants Program for fund to host this year
conference. Unless the WMF have agreed to guarantee funding for future
years conference (I haven't been following so not sure), then whoever is
hosting the conference will also need time to apply for funding from Grants.

[Wikimedia-l] WMF Board and FDC's elections - delay by one week

2013-05-31 Thread Katie Chan
The Election Committee regrets to advise that it is necessary to delay
the start of voting in the WMF Elections 2013 for one week. This delay
is being implemented for three reasons:

* We have been unable to verify that the list of eligible voters is
complete and that all voters meet the published criteria
* We have been unable to verify that the SecurePoll setups for the
election are properly functioning
* The voter interfaces have not been translated and are not currently
available in any language other than English, thus disadvantaging
Wikimedians who do not read English.

The following changes are now made to the Election timeline:
*8-22 June 2013: elections
*23-25 June 2013: vote-checking
*25-28 June: publication of results.

For the Election Committee,

The main difference is the target of an ombudsman commission
investigation are generally not (if at all) sysadmin, but CU,
bureaucrat, admin, abcom & oversight. Out of the 12 OTRS admin, 5 are
