[Wikimedia-l] Good Bye as CIS-A2K Program Director
Dear Wikimedians, This is my last day as the CIS-A2K Program Director. The last 2 years and 3 months have been immensely exciting with tons of learning and work! I have loved meeting many Wikimedians, face to face, across the length and breadth of India. The interactions I had with many of the Wikimedians in India have been immensely useful to my learning. The diversity of our community and the Wikimedia projects in India is so rich and intricate - I wish I could map out my entire set of impressions, to only give a slight glimpse of it!! Signing off as the Program Director for now. See you on-wiki, here on the lists and in real life whenever our paths cross. A quick update: The next A2K Program Director selection is under process and hopefully we should all be able to welcome the new incumbent in June, 2015. Until then the A2K team is being internally monitored by CIS leadership. [Wikimedia-l] CIS-A2K draft work plan for July 2015 to June 2016
Dear Wikimedians, We are happy to share with you the draft work plans for the period July 2015 to June 2016 [1]. We have more or less followed the same work plan templates from last year. Some of these plans have been done in consultation with the community members. We look forward to receiving your feedback and inputs on the talk pages. This time we have included an endorsement section at the end of every program plan for the community members to endorse, should they wish to do so. Based on these plans we have also put up the next round of FDC proposal here[2]. We intend to revise these draft work plans based on your and FDC feedback in July, 2015, subject to grant support from FDC. Dear Emily, Congratulations! OSH is a major concern in countries like India, especially when it is linked to the livelihoods of millions of people who work in the informal sector with little safeguards. Around 2010 he shifted focus from editing to helping new users, working in the irc-help channel and developing the Plain and Simple guide for New Editors [3] and its COI counterpart [4]. In 2012 Jake began developing projects through the Individual Engagement Grants department at WMF. He built The Wikipedia Adventure,[5] a playful interactive game to onboard new editors. He also began establishing and expanding donation partnerships in The Wikipedia Library to provide free research access to top article contributors. He helps out as a board member of Wiki Project Med Foundation [6] and gives talks about Wikipedia's role in education. Jake grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs and studied political theory at Wesleyan, before starting a tutoring company in Colorado. He currently splits his time between coasts, working full-time on Wikipedia projects. His contract with WMF will focus on expanding the number and global reach of Wikipedia Library partnerships. Alex Stinson (User:Sadads) is a 9-year editor with over 80,000 contributions, actively involved in different forms of outreach. He is currently a project manager with the The Wikipedia Library, a long time volunteer with The Wikipedia Education Program, and supporter of GLAM-Wiki outreach. Re: [Wikimedia-l] CAPTCHA for people with poor eyesight
Hi, I thought I should acknowledge that this is a problem not just with people with poor eye sight but also when using a low resolutulion screen. In most of the outreach sessions done in non-metros in India, I have come across people (the ones with good eye sight) face this problem more, as the monitors they use are not great. It would be helpful if good alternatives could be worked upon. Best, Vishnu On Wednesday, 27 August 2014, Bohdan Melnychuk bas...@yandex.ru wrote: Hola la todos. I'm being curios how the blind or just people with quite poor eyesight are supposed to join Wiki(m|p)edia. Fortunately though my own eyesight isn't what you call perfect, low myopia gives me no obstacles to use computer without spectacles. But unfortunately not every human being can boast not having such problems. And I'm sure some of them could be potential wikimedians. But when I e.g. want to proceed with registration I've got to fill a field with what CAPTCHA says (and except for registration there are also other cases when it's shown for nonautoconfirmed guys). But assume you don't see it well — how on Earth are you to pass it then? It's not uncommon to see audio version on many sites. But we have it not. On Wikidata there is a link to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Captcha which actually acknowledges the problem, there is similar page on Meta, I believe there are some more like this but the solution to contact siteadmins doesn't seem too good for me - user at least needs to reveal his email publicly or contact a sysop using some external to wikipages way. Not all people'd like to do it. Enwiki provides with a link to a tool https://accounts.wmflabs.org/ but still you need to give your email to somebody. But on the other hand even such a solution is better than nothing. But it's local ones in perhaps dozen or two wikis while there are over 700 of them. [Wikimedia-l] Statement on CIS-A2K's FDC proposal discussion
Dear Wikimedians, We have put out a statement on the CIS-A2K's FDC proposal discussion here [1]. As you will note the statement reflects on some of the critical points of feedback that we received and outlines the steps that we have taken and plan to take. On behalf of everyone at CIS, we thank the Wikimedians, WMIN EC, FDC Staff, FDC Members and the WMF Board who actively engaged with our FDC proposal. We have learnt some useful lessons because of the FDC discussions and assure you that we will continue to improve upon our programmatic efficiency, efficacy, accountability and transparency. Excellent news, Tonmoy! Congratulations!! Our application for registration was approved by the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies Firms - Bangladesh on 9th June, 2014 and I have collected the certificate of registration today (10th June, 2014). Wikimedia Bangladesh has been registered under the Societies Registration Act of Bangladesh our official name is Wikimedia Bangladesh Foundation. The registration process was a very long and demanding one, but our perseverance and determination finally prevailed. It has become very difficult to get registration of a society/foundation in Bangladesh as the incumbents have to have security clearance from the National Security Intelligence (NSI) of Bangladesh, which is very difficult to get if not impossible. In the course of dealing with the registration process of WMBD, I learned that less than 5 applications for registration as societies get approved out of every 100. We submitted our application in May 2012 and it took us a little over two years to get the security clearance from NSI complete all the bureaucratic process! It gives us a great sense of achievement that we could uphold the Wikimedia movement volunteerism spirit with passion, integrity and professionalism despite being a small volunteer community. The pending registration issue could not hold us from doing outreach activities locally taking in the greater Wikimedia Movement. We organized some excellent programs, workshops meet-ups with our limited resources during this time period. This effort successfully brought in good number of new contributors to Bengali Wikipedia increased the article count. Volunteers from WMBD/Bangladesh are also actively participating in the international Wikimedia movement by taking part in discussions, conferences as committee members in different Wikimedia committees. [Wikimedia-l] CIS-A2K Work Plan for July 14-June 15
Dear Wikimedians, I am glad to share with you the detailed work plan of CIS-A2K for the period July 2014-July 2015 [1] . This work plan consists of 21 plans across 6 verticals. These are: * 7 Language Area Plans * 3 Community Strengthening Initiatives * 8 Stand-alone Wikimedia Projects * Creating Movement Resources * Publicity, Research and Documentation * General Support and Service to the Movement The work plan includes details of aims, objectives, programme activities and expected outcomes. Most of the language area plans were put together in active consultation with the respective Wikimedia language communities. Various inputs and ideas contributed, opportunities provided, and challenges thrown at the CIS-A2K program during the last year by the Wikimedia communities in India, our institutional partners, Executive Committee (EC) of Wikimedia India Chapter (WMIN) and the Wikimedia Foundation's Grantmaking Team have significantly informed our work plans. Each plan has an independent budget and is closely mapped on to the implementation plan. An attempt is made to correlate why we are spending a certain amount on a certain activity. Thus all these budgets are very optimally planned and the overall budget is an assimilation. CIS-A2K believes that this will give mission level transparency to our work and provide a clearer structure of accountability to the movement and the community. Please do share your feedback and inputs on the respective plan discussion pages. We would be glad to correct ourselves if you could point out to any major omissions and errors in plans. We will be approaching the FDC requesting support for this work plan [2]. Firstly in the five language communities that we are focusing on, such an introspection exercise was not done systematically before and secondly a mandatory imposition may not be productive either for the Community or for CIS-A2K. We do not want it to end-up becoming a task to be ticked against. Our effort is to train the community to systematically introspect, which will go a long way in strengthening the Indian language Wikipedias and the associated communities. Hello Jake, This is fantastic for an Alpha sage! Have gone through the entire mission. There was some problem in loading the next levels at certain stages and I had to refresh the page couple of times. Would be nice if this could be tested with a completely new set of users across geographies and age-groups in Beta stage. I could help finding people from India. Would like this to be finalized soon and try to customize it to the Indian languages. Great work! Cheers, Vishnu On 29 October 2013 21:40, Strainu strain...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Went through mission 1 and the main feedback is that it's just too long. You should break the missions in smaller, quicker steps. The interface is visually pleasant and as far as I can see, it gets you through all the basic editing skills, which is nice. However, the messages are not always in the same place and sometimes are not visible in the visible part of the page, making it a little confusing for people without much computer skills. It would also help to be able to move the box. I especially like the little badges you get, but I'm not quite sure how they are aligned (perhaps because I only got 1): the first one was put in the middle of the page (horizontally) Are there any technical details on the game and the difficulty of implementing it on other wikis? Thanks, Strainu 2013/10/28 Katherine Casey fluffernutter.w...@gmail.com: Some thoughts upon running through this (roughly in the order I am experiencing them): - This is actually pretty cool. Cooler than I expected it to be! - Instructions sometimes tell me to click edit source and sometimes to click edit, even though it always means that I should click edit source. Since the VE button says edit, this is potentially pretty confusing. - At the end of missions, the button says Congrats me!. That's pretty jarring English - more natural would be either, Congrats, me! or Congrats to me! - The select how you would reply to this person challenges are...patronizing? That's not quite the right word, but I don't think they're modelling anything useful by basically pointing out hey, you shouldn't be a rude jackass as if it's someone's going to read those options and go yes! this is clearly how I should act!. More useful would be modelling interaction strategies and tricks, like how to engage with some who's left you a rude message or even just what information is useful to provide to other users. - Galactic challenges keep launching new tabs for me when they don't seem like they ought to (i.e. there's no reason I need to have the results of that challenge preserved in one firefox tab while I move on in another) - The watchlist module has instructions that are a little bit confusing - it instructs you on *how *to watchlist (blue star, etc), but then tells you to *click *on watchlist on the top right. Since both the star and the actual watchlist link are on the top right, it's likely going to be unclear to newbies whether you want them to click on the star you just explained, or the link you didn't. - In general when you're telling people to click X above, it might be useful to use quotes so they know you're telling to click on something that literally says that - tell them to *click contributions above *rather than to *click contributions above* - When doing spelling corrections, the hover box listing what I needed to correct obscured part of the text that needed correcting. I couldn't correct that until I closed the box. Once I did that, I was bumped out of the lesson entirely. Couldn't figure out how to the mission to pick back up there, so I had to stop. Why can't we either minimize the instructions box, or have it resurrect when we complete a step (that is, if I did what it wanted me to do, it should pick back up smoothly when I save the page with its next instruction, rather than just disappearing forever because I had to click the X) In short: really very cool, but in the parts I managed to get through (Missions 1-2 and part of 3) there are some small interface issues that need work, and one *glaring *one that short-circuited my attempt to get through a mission and, I guess, the entire adventure. -Fluffernutter On Wed, Oct 16, 2013 at 5:56 PM, Jake Orlowitz jorlow...@gmail.com wrote: Hi folks! Vishnu: BEFORE EVEN PUBLISHING THE JOB ADVERTISEMENT WE HAD DECIDED TO PUBLISH A BLOG POST/WRITE-UP ON THE SELECTION PROCESS AND SHARE IT WITH THE WIKIMEDIA INDIA COMMUNITY AS PART OF OUR TRANSPARENCY MEASURE. ONCE THIS IS UP, WILL SHARE THE LINK. Me: Please make available the job descriptions/roles for all the employees at meta and share the same in the mailing list. Vishnu: YES WE ARE REWORKING THE PROFILES AS THE EARLIER ROLES ARE NO MORE RELEVANT. WE WILL TAKE THIS UP ON PRIORITY AND PUT IT UP ON META. THE LINKS TO A2K TEAM MEMBER PROFILES, SHARED EVERY MONTH IN A2K NEWSLETTERS, WILL IN FUTURE BE LINKED TO THE META PAGES. -- If I've missed any updates on this from A2K, let me know. What happened to the decision? When do you plan to share this, next year? If so you should have told the community. Don't you think so? Besides user pages (User pages don't have detailed information about the job description) there is no proper work details of anybody on meta officially . I don't think there is any even off-wiki . (Profiles at CIS site are not detailed enough to know their works) We don't know who is responsible for which work!! Who is doing what? Few more questions.. Why still *2* new recruits are missing even after several months, at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Teamhttp://bl-1.com/click/load/ADAAMlM2Um8Hb1w7CTw-b0231 , Why there is no *monthly reports* updated on meta, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Reportshttp://bl-1.com/click/load/VGRaaABlVmtQOFA3AjA-b0231 Why there is no *community Mid-year reports* updated, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Reportshttp://bl-1.com/click/load/VmZZawdiAj9ROVUyBDc-b0231 If there is any report available anywhere, when do you plan to update the meta pages? Why there is no response to this, Evaluation results after months? *How long are your two weeks?* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:India_Access_To_Knowledge/Work_plan_April_2013_-_June_2014/Learning_and_Evaluationhttp://bl-1.com/click/load/UGAKOFw5WmcCagZhV2c-b0231 What about *Quarterly Community Survey* mentioned here, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Work_plan_April_2013_-_June_2014/Learning_and_Evaluationhttp://bl-1.com/click/load/XW0PPQdiBzoFbVA3VGU-b0231? Is there any plan to do this ever? And on this https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Forum/Archives/2013-08#Terms_.2F_MoU_for_India_A2K_projecthttp://bl-1.com/click/load/BDRcblQxATwFbQFmUmw-b0231, which Shyamal brought it up; I'd like to see something concrete from the Foundation. I don't know about off-wiki, but there hasn't been proper communication on anything on-wiki. If there is a change in plans or updates on any event, we don't get to see that! Why? * Who is accountable for all these discrepancies??* I request the foundation or whoever
Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia France] Welcome to Nathalie, our new ED
Many congratulations from India, Nathalie!! Vishnu On Tuesday, 1 October 2013, Christophe Henner christophe.hen...@wikimedia.fr wrote: Hi everyone, We have the great pleasure to announce Nathalie Martin is starting today as the new Executive Director of Wikimédia France! Her hiring is the tipping point of a process we started last January when we hired a HR firm to audit our organization and support us in finding the right person for this key role. With a background in political science and organizations strategy, Nathalie has a deep experience managing several associations of similar or bigger size as Wikimedia France. Even though she is not from the movement, we believe she'll adapt quickly to who we are. She came to Wikimania in Hong-Kong, and some of you may have had the pleasure to meet her. By coming to Wikimania she had the luck to experience in 3 day what Wikimedia is at large, to meet wikimedians from all around the world. I'm happy to say that she too suffered from PWD (Post-Wikimania Depression). If you need to contact her, her email address is nathalie.mar...@wikimedia.fr. Please keep in mind that it's her first day within our movement and she still will need few days to adapt to our awesomeness Please join us in welcoming Nathalie! Best, PS: please keep her in copy of your answers :) Christophe HENNER | Vice-chair --- › Mail : christophe.hen...@wikimedia.fr › Mobile : +33(0)6 29 35 65 94 › Tel : +33(0)5 62 89 12 01 › Twitter : @Wikimedia_Fr - Wikimédia France | Association pour le libre partage de la connaissance | Visitez notre blog http://blog.wikimedia.fr ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe
