Hi Michelle,

Thank you for the respond. We I and few others wrote on Meta - this
link problematic - and it's new, although the using of Qualtrics is not.

Better option is to include the link to their privacy page from the landing
page itself, before the survey or at the bottom.

Another option could be to link to a Wiki page - with a
short explanation about the issue with handling such a survey with a 3rd
party, and linking to the survey and the privacy.

Just linking directly from a banner to their website (where they are also
tracking users via Facebook and Google pixels), is kind of advertising from
my point of view.

[Wikimedia-l] Advertising in Central Notice

Hi All,

Apologies for any confusion with the "powered by" language. The purpose of
the language was not, in any way, intended to provide advertising or
endorsement of the survey provider. The reasoning behind this language was:
(1) brevity given limited space; (2) notice to survey takers and link
clickers that they would be taken to a non-Wikimedia site; and (3)
transparency about the survey provider that we are using for that
particular survey and an easy link to that provider's privacy terms so that
users could make an educated decision about their own privacy. We are more
than happy to use alternate language that achieves those purposes.

Regarding why we don't use LimeSurvey - we actually used to use LimeSurvey
years ago. However, if I recall correctly, there were some major security
and scalability issues discovered and Tech decided it would be best to shut
the server down. That is when we started exploring use of third-party
survey providers like Qualtrics.

since when wikipedia needs to use some arbitrary 3rd party company to
conduct a simple survey? i'd consider it a core competency of a social
website like wikipedia to allow finding out the opinion and a
consensus of contributors and readers, anonymous and not anonymous.

Some thoughts:
Pete, Thanks for bringing this up here and taking action on meta. I was 
concerned seeing the link to a commercial company in the central notice banner.

I am wondering why the wmf can't set up a own survey. For example using 
https://www.limesurvey.org/en/ 
(https://www.limesurvey.org/en/about-limesurvey/license)

To protect users privacy third party services shouldn't be used, especially in 
central noticed.

It would be worth knowing if the wmf needs to pay for that survey stuff.

I am also wondering what's the benefit of this survey, but that's a other 
question...

Ziko, I agree. But we are using Qualtrics since 2011, and we never had a
link to their website in such way. What has changed?

insufficient attention to such arrangements. This leaves volunteers in the
position of cleaning up the mess, and sometimes, of playing the role of the
"bad guy" whose image suffers from telling somebody that they can't have
what they want.

link will be taking them outside the Wikimedia projects.  We linked to the
Qualtrics privacy statement, as we felt that users should have access to
that if they wanted to read it.

Petefosyth has made some changes to it, based on this discussion [1].  It
now reads "Survey data handled by a third party".
