[Wikimediaindia-l] Sharing insights and experiences from Indian language wikipedias - Hindi

2011-11-23 Thread Shiju Alex
Dear Indic Language Wikimedia Community members,

As part of the Indic Languages initiative of India
Programs,
I have been having detailed discussions with a wide range of Indic language
wikipedians for the past few weeks. Yesterday I shared the summary of
discussions with few Assamese Wikipedians which helped us to understand the
current situation of Assamese wikipedia. Thank you for the discussions
and ideas that emerged on the mailing list and the talk page.

Today I'm particularly excited to share a summary of the discussions I've
been been having with *Hindi wikipedians*. It is available here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs/Indic_Languages/Hindi/Discussions/2011

I will be honest and confess that I was not sure about the level of
engagement I would have with Hindi wikipedians because the community is
relatively quiet in public forums. I'm really pleased to report that I was
very pleasantly surprised by the broad-based, insightful, and constructive
communications. Hindi community might be silent but they are active and
full of powerful ideas. We have seen wonderful Hindi wikipedians like
Anirudh in WCI. Even though the current community strength of Hindi
wikipedia might not be good cosidering the huge speaker base of Hindi, I am
sure the situation will change soon.

Even if you are not involved in Hindi projects, I invite you to read this
report because the points raised are applicable to all Indic languages.
Personally, as someone who has been passionate about Indic languages for
many years now, I found the discussions very educative and informative and
thought-provoking. I have learnt a lot from these discussions and I hope
you find them as useful as I have. I want to thank Hindi community for
their time and their fantastic inputs.

Remember most of the issues the Hindi editors raised are applicable not
only to Hindi but for all the Indic languages. So it is important that
other Indic language communities take lessons from it while building the
community.

As mentioned before, I've edited the discussions to protect confidentiality
as well as to remove any specific personal comments.

Inviting your active participation in these discussions (either on talk
page or in the mailing lists).

Warm Regards,

Shiju Alex

Just wanted to clarify that the contest is open for all language speakers
and not just for Tamils.

The contest portal is also available in English at
http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contest/en . So, please do encourage all your
friends who may have an interest in Tamil culture.

Most of the major companies have a photography club or something like that.
Circulating news about this contest in such mailing lists would be a great
help for us.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Tamil Wiki Media Contest

2011-11-23 Thread Bala Jeyaraman
Ramesh,

The files that are uploaded as part of the contest are in the category
 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:TamilWiki_Media_Contest

This cat gets automatically added, when the special upload wizard is used.
If you want to directly upload to commons or use other tools like
commonist, please add this category to the files

Regarding template,

We have a {{TamilWiki Media Contest}} template. But we have not designed
this to be added automatically to the files. (as a deliberate decision ).
If this template is added to the files, then the category too gets added
automatically.

[Wikimediaindia-l] FW: [cultural-partners] Al Jazeera in Flickr goes cc-by-sa

2011-11-23 Thread wheredevelsdare

Thought it would be a good idea to share this news here as well.

From: liamwy...@gmail.com
Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2011 13:23:51 +
To: cultural-partn...@wikimedia.ch; common...@lists.wikimedia.org
CC: bilal.rande...@aljazeera.net; bwesolow...@ict.gov.qa
Subject: [cultural-partners] Al Jazeera in Flickr goes cc-by-sa

Dear Cultural-patners-l and Commons-l,
As some of you know I'm currently in Qatar at the invitation of CreativeCommons
Qatar talking to various GLAMs. We met with the good folks from Al Jazeera
English the other day and discussed various ways that we could work together in
the future - based on the great early work of the Al Jazeera CC portal:
http://cc.aljazeera.net/ (copied in to this email is Bilal from Al Jazeera and
Brian from CC.Qatar). One of the specific questions that they asked me was
about why does Wikipedia use screenshots from those videos rather that using
their still images from flickr directly. The reason is, as we know, was that
the Al Jazeera photostream on Flickr was licensed as cc-by-ND.

So... It is now my pleasure to pass on a message from Bilal:

Hi Liam - I've updated our Flickr account and all images are now available
under the CC share-alike option.

EXCELLENT! :-) Everyone, have a look at some of the gorgeous photos available
here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aljazeeraenglish/sets/ they cover topics
from Hajj to the Gaza War, and many different countries involved in the "Arab
Spring". Not only are these beautiful pictures with great provenance they are
also extremely encyclopedic and impossible to replace. They are all taken by Al
Jazeera journalists in the field. Furthermore, this is an amazingly fast
turnaround time for changing a large institution's copyright policy :-)

Let's start getting these across to Wikimedia Commons in the Category "files
from Al Jazeera"
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Files_from_Al_Jazeera and start
integrating them into various WP articles!

Is there someone who can dedicate a bot to sucking these across to Flickr
straight away?
Perhaps we can also create a nice "partnership template" too?
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Partnership_templates

Sincerely,
-Liam

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Tamil Wiki Media Contest

2011-11-23 Thread Bala Jeyaraman
Eric,

Our experience with the upload wizard has been great. Its extremely useful
and newbie editors are finding it easy to use. There was a slight hitch
with customising it though. Commons hasnt yet decided the procedure for
giving the "upload campaign editor" rights. Our requests for rights were
denied because there is no community approved procedure for it yet. We had
to take the help of a commons admin for the customisation. Apart from that
the campaign customised wizard is perfect for competitions/scavenger hunts
like ours.

Well, yes, I do agree that WCI will help primarily to make more contacts
which will ease meetups. But, regular meetups and post-meetup/academy
follow ups are very important. But an initial foundation building need a
LOUD event. The 1st Odia Wikipedia Academy in Bhubaneswar never produced
any single active Wikipedian, but people in the state became aware that
there is a active Wiki project. But, it's really amazing to see a NITan to
take part in it, hope it grows in the insti campus as well and lead to more
outreach programs.

In fact Assamese people are widespread all over India and quite conscious
for language and literature. So, that is a great way to reach to more
language enthusiasts.

This is wonderful, good luck. Please let us know about your experience
with Upload Wizard.

I noticed that Upload Wizard isn't fully localized into Tamil yet. Any
Tamil speaker can help localize it on translatewiki.net. These are the
missing translations:

[Wikimediaindia-l] Tamil Wiki Media Contest

2011-11-23 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hello All,

Tamil Wiki Community is currently organizing a 3 month long media
contest[1][2] with the aim of increasing media files related to Tamil /
Tamilians / Tamil culture to be used in Tamil Wiki Projects and
encouraging non-text contributions from users who could contribute easily
through pictures, sounds, videos. Total prize money of 850 USD is up for
grabs. As such within a week of starting the contest, we have got over 350
images from participants in India and Srilanka. Apart from images which can
be used on Wikipedia pages, pronunciation files are also being uploaded to
be used in Wiktionary. Arrangements are on to get it widely publicized on
print / radio / television media across places with Tamil population.
Facebook[3] is also helping a lot in getting traction. Spread out the word,
also do participate!

yes, please help Assamese wikipedians. They need support in various forms
(technical, community development, and other stuff) since a small
community started forming there. I feel the immediate support that Begali
community can extend to Assamese community is in the form of supporting
them to prepare an FAQ booklet for Assamese wiki projects, which they can
use in their outreach activities. Also we need to introduce them with the
larger Indian wiki community (india mailing list, other Indic
wikipedians,...).

We are waiting for help each other between Bengali/Assamese/Manipuri

Yes, languages that use same or similar script can collaborate and adapt
many things especially in the technical front.

As Shiju mentioned, he will be sharing the discussions that he's been having
(and continues to have) with various communities. We can and must identify
ways that the Foundation / Chapter can support various communities. Let's talk
more on Bengali and any ideas that you might have including the ones that were
discussed at WCI.

Personally, I think the *real* value of WCI was to serve as a catalyst for
further growth. Of course the sessions were important - but (arguably) even
more important was the opportunity to make connections, share ideas informally,
start conversations that lead to friendships and motivate community building.

Good to see the progress the Assamese Wiki Community building, and the FAQ
set. Hoping to see the FAQ Booklet in PDF and more outreach activities, WCI
would work like a catalyst to promote. In fact Assamese people are
widespread all over India and quite conscious for language and literature.
So, that is a great way to reach to more language enthusiasts.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Sharing insights and experiences from Indian language wikipedias - Assamese

2011-11-23 Thread Shiju Alex
Dear Indic Wikimedia Community members,

As part of the Indic Languages initiative of India
Programs,
I have been having detailed discussions with a wide range of Indic language
wikipedians for the past few weeks. These discussions have been to build
the understanding, provide insight, and explore opportunities to expand
Indic language projects. The end result of these discussions is to help
identify language communities with whom we can collaboratively design
pilots to drive our projects.

These discussions have been conducted on IRC, one-on-one, group voice
conversations, as well as through email questionnaires.

Over the next few days, I am going to share a series of these with you.
The intention is to give you a sense of the kind of perspectives that
exist within the overall Indic community, to share ideas and to generate
discussion on potential ideas. Please note that I have edited the
discussions to preserve confidentiality as well as to remove any
particularly personal comments that might have been shared.

Please do let me have your views on these discussions and do please join
the debate on the talk page or on this mailing list or offline to me.

For today, I am sharing the discussions with the *Assamese
community
*. The summary of this discussion is placed at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs/Indic_Languages/Assamese/Discussions/2011

Assamese wikipedia community is a tiny but vibrant community - that is
slowly building itself. There is huge opportunity given that Assamese is
spoken by more than 1.3 crore people. As we all know, there was not much
progress in Assamese wiki community till recently. But now the situation is
slowly changing after the arrival of few dedicated users. And in this
early stage, Assamese community show very promising potential. I remember
discussing the importance of preparing a small FAQ in AS Wiki to help the
new users. In no time few community members prepared a good FAQ
pagefor
the Assamese wiki. I am sure with the arrival of such dedicated users
Assamese wiki is going to make good progress.

Inviting your active participation in these discussions (either on talk
page or in this mailing list).

I've been using Google Talk and thought you might like to try it out. We can
use it to call each other for free over the internet. Here's an invitation to

ramkishan bhise has invited you to sign up for Google Talk so you can talk to
each other for free over your computers.

To sign-up, go to:
http://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount?service=talk&sendvemail=true&skipvpage=true&reqemail=wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org&continue=http://www.google.com/talk/service/handleinvite?p%3DQdZMnzUBAAA.vymTa3ed3NC2RirqabUuTnC2oJH9C2ci4JNNHxs4Z9JT5xfpOwXpvpaUvTddFpwgFfotTA44I5cJjtoo1xgjHA.UD5WhBsZa9HYGqnUBP6RgQ&followup=http://www.google.com/talk/service/HandleEmailVerified?ee%3DQdZMnzUBAAA.bBOazwYcWNRpM-L7tYKXvsSfTPbn1V6lcvO-hpjck8pkVR3bNW7Bb8K_tF4GHVHb.Uy10f5qvuK1jJk4d-puGaA%26p%3DQdZMnzUBAAA.vymTa3ed3NC2RirqabUuTnC2oJH9C2ci4JNNHxs4Z9JT5xfpOwXpvpaUvTddFpwgFfotTA44I5cJjtoo1xgjHA.UD5WhBsZa9HYGqnUBP6RgQ

Google Talk is a downloadable Windows* application that offers:
- Free calls over your computer anytime, from anywhere, and for as long as you
want
- A simple and intuitive user interface for sending instant messages or making
calls--no clutter, pop-ups or ads
- Superior voice quality through just a microphone and computer speaker

After signing-up, download Google Talk and sign in with your new Google Account
username and password.
You can then begin inviting anyone you want to talk to for free.

Google Talk works with any computer speaker and microphone, such as the ones
built-in to many PC laptops today,
as well as with wired and wireless headsets and USB phones. Google Talk also
works across all firewalls.

Google Talk is still in beta. Just like with Gmail, we're working hard to add
features and make improvements,
so we might also ask for your comments and suggestions periodically. We
appreciate your help in making it even better!

Thanks,

[Wikimediaindia-l] Translation sprint on 26th November in Pune

2011-11-23 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,

We are happy to announce a Translation sprint on 26th November 2011 at
SICSR between 10 am to 5 pm.

These are the activities in the sprint:

To work on the translation of MediaWiki and MediaWiki extensions used by
Wikimedia for a few hours. (and have some nice chats while doing that :-) )

These translations are done at https://translatewiki.net .

There will also be some discussions related to the topic. We will also have
some session similar to FUEL (www.fuelproject.org)

5 people from the Wikimedia Foundation technical team (Siebrand, Niklas,
Amir, Gerard, Santhosh and Alolita) will be coming for the sprint.

It is not necessary that you should have technical knowledge about
mediawiki or translatewiki but that will surely help. Your (Indic) language
skills are also required for the event. People interested in FUEL
activities are also welcome.

So, do join us for the sprint.

Here are the details:
Date: 26th November 2011
Venue: 3rd floor at SICSR (this might change if we have HUGE response :-) )
Time: 10 am to 5 pm.

Thanks and regards
