Instead of saying it won't work, we have to think how to make it work as
the ultimate goal of increasing awareness about Indic projects should not
be neglected !

[Wikimediaindia-l] Hello from AsWiki

2011-12-20 Thread Prabhakar Sarma Neog
My name is Prabhakar Sarma Neog, from Assamese Wikipedia.

The members of Indic wikis have been helping, and inspiring the Assamese
Wikipedia. It was almost dying two years ago, and would have been closed,
if it were not for Shiju Alex and other wikimedians.

We have just opened a mailing list for Assamese Wikipedia, thanks to Shiju,
Naveen, CheritanThiru Abraham and others. We already have a facebook group
but now want to gradually shift major discussions To the new list.

Recently there are talks in Assam wiki about arranging wiki awareness
sessions, workshops etc. to attract and groom more editors and to inspire
the existing ones.. Since we don't have experience, we'll look for other
wikipedians to guide us.

Thank you again for your inspiration,

Hello all,

I'm really eagerly waiting news from the Kolkata Book fair. Excuse me for
my impatience, but the concept of such a large outreach in my home city is
just too enthralling for me to keep quiet.

What is the current situation? Are there any updates? Any news on the
contract with the Book Fair people? What's the word on WMF regarding
funding? How many volunteers are required? Does the Kolkata community have
adequate man-power? What about posters and freebies? Can any of the Campus
Ambassadors, including myself from the India Education Program provide any
assistance?

Sorry if there are too many questions, I'm just too excited. :)

*While testing both Lohit and Utkal has hinting problems in or wp, is that
possible to keep them optional? As of now automatically the default font
changes to Lohit when you open or wp, instead of that is that possible to
make it optional which someone can choose the dropdown?*

Welcome to the club Subha. Finally we have some company :-)

We have been having the same difference of opinion with the i18n team since
late october (whole story in the bug linked by srikanth). It is a POV issue
as Srikanth points out. The i18n team aims to avoid the occurrence of
square boxes in any of the wikiprojects using webfonts. While we feel that
shouldnt occur till quality of default webfont = system font. Especially
for cases like Tamil, where people with system fonts are 9-10x the number
of people who see square boxes (all windows systems post XP SP2 have tamil
unicode support by default and also people are very knowledgeable about
font issues because of a history of competing encoding formats)

While we still insist on the "webfont as non-default option", we are
exploring both solutions Srikanth lists to arrive at the "default webfont
with same quality as system font" result. Currently the Tamil community is
a) working with santosh as he tries to improve lohit tamil b) and is
searching for a professional font developer to donate a good quality
"webfont ready" font under OFL/GPL font exclusion.

You can try either or both of these (or request the i18n for a non-default
webfont feature)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Is there a code4lib in India?

2011-12-20 Thread Pradeep Mohandas
hi,

>From another list -
Code4Lib is having their 2012 conference in Feb. in Seattle. Might be
something of interest if you're into tech-ness and how open source
communities can work together. Here is how they describe their organization:

" code4lib isn't entirely about code or libraries. It is a volunteer-driven
collective of hackers, designers, architects, curators, catalogers, artists
and instigators from around the world, who largely work for and with
libraries, archives and museums on technology "stuff." It started in the
fall of 2003 as a mailing
listwhen a group
of library programmers decided to create an overarching
community agnostic towards any particular language or technology."

I'm unable to attend due to other obligations, but, it might be something
others have interest in. Would be a great opportunity to "combine our
powers" or see where we can work together.

http://code4lib.org/

Is there any such grouping in India? Exploring their website, they are
geared towards GLAM as well. Wondering that if we're going to do GLAM stuff
in India we might benefit from interacting with such a group in India as
well.

warm regards,
Pradeep Mohandas

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] ONE simple step to double or triple visits to Indic Wikipedias

2011-12-20 Thread Anirudh Bhati
Most of the visitors on Wikipedia end up there through search engines. But
there is another group which attempts to access Wikipedia directly by
typing in www.wikipedia.com or www.wikipedia.org in the address bar of
their browsers.

Currently, the landing page for www.wikipedia.org (wikipedia.com redirects
to wikipedia.org) lists the ten largest Wikipedia projects. Apart from the
English Wikipedia, the rest of the projects are practically useless for
most of us in this country. Replacing the foreign language projects (for
Indian IPs) with Indic language projects will help drive more traffic.

Yours sincerely,

Anirudh Bhati

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] ONE simple step to double or triple visits to Indic Wikipedias

2011-12-20 Thread Pradeep Mohandas
hi,

Perhaps somebody here has already brought this up, but you can now switch
languages on Commons using a drop down menu. You can spot the drop down
just below the Village Pump link. There is also a helpful site notice, that
suggested I read Commons in British English :).

It seems to do this change by detecting the change in the script in the url
- http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. Neat.

warm regards,
Pradeep

I think this is a very good suggestion. I remember seeing many of friends
using wikipedia.org to reach English wikipedia. Replacing the current
non-english wikipedias with Indic wikipedias (for Indian IPs) can also be
one of the solution. It will definitely catch the attention of a few
percentage of Indian readers.

top and others below. Who knows, an Indian may try and access European

Nitika,

You folks are doing a great job with this on your own, but I wanted to be
sure you know that I can lift the cap of 7 account creations per day, if
you let me know what day you're doing something. :)

That's an open offer to anyone doing outreach...

Ravi (or others who know): is
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3665 an adequate summary
of your request? Or perhaps there's another bug I missed when I was
searching Bugzilla -- you're not just looking to localise the interface
for people coming to our wikis, you want to alert them to the existence
of wikis in their language(s).

I think other people in this thread have mentioned some other facets and
possibilities around language selection and detection, so maybe you
could add your relevant thoughts/suggestions to the relevant bugs in
Bugzilla, so the MediaWiki developers have access to them when
considering this issue. Thanks.

I think it would be great for all of this to live on the existing
outreach wiki, https://outreach.wikimedia.org (example:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bookshelf ). That might be a useful
place to get cross-pollination from other people who are already working
on Wikimedia outreach.

Subject: [WMIN-Members] Call for participation of Members in Chapter Task
Forces
To: wmin-memb...@googlegroups.com

Dear Members,

With the objective of increasing the engagement of members of the chapter
actively in various initiatives that would align to their interests and
passions, the Executive Committee (EC) has come up with focused Task Forces
for coordinating and driving various chapter activities.

There are two types of Task Forces - Project Task Forces and Operations
Task Forces. The Project Task Forces are focused on growing Wikimedia
projects. The Operations Task Forces are critical functions to enable the
Project Task Forces and the Chapter in growing the movement.

Project Task Forces

City and Language Special Interest
Groups

Chair, City and Language Special Interest Groups: Sudhanwa Jogalekar

Special Projects (Special
projects requiring coordination across multiple SIGs. GLAM is one such
project)

Chair, Special Projects: Arun Ramarathnam

Operations Task Forces

Administration :

Head, Administration: Srinivas Gunta

Fundraising :

Head, Fundraising: Anirudh Bhati

Communications, PR & Media Relations
:

Head, Communications, PR & Media Relations: Tinu Cherian

Task Force Stewardship

The Task Force stewardship will be provided by EC members in terms of
encouraging volunteers to join the Task Force, coordinating for financial
resources and other resources across the Task Forces and the EC. EC
members will work with the Task Forces to grow volunteer base, support and
enable planning and execution.

Call for member participation

We encourage every member of the chapter to volunteer for a Project and/or
a Operations Task Force based on his/her interests. This would allow
members to actively participate in chapter activities and strengthen the
various projects and functions. The Task Forces also allow for creating a
leadership pipeline for the chapter EC.

Please review the scope of activities of the various Task Forces by
following the hyperlinks against the names of the task force (above) on
the members wiki and use the discussion pages for seeking clarifications.
You can also reach the leads of the various Task Forces for any
clarifications.

Please sign up to the various Task Forces as per your interest and help in
shaping the chapter initiatives and executing the same.

Looking forward to your active participation in the Task Forces.

Regards
Arjuna Rao Chavala,
President, Wikimedia Chapter.

2011-12-20 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Hello friends,

Sometimes I think we forget that we are not just editors but participants
in a living, breathing, arguing and having fun community. A large number of
community initiatives are on this year - some from chapter, some from
Foundation Trust and some from wikipedias/city groups. Each of these
initiatives, if they succeed will add more value to Wikipedia, than plain
and simple editting alone can do. I know I'm generalising but the need of
the hour is not A or B but both ie not a choice between editting or
community involvement but for each of us to be involved in both.

If you are an active editor but not involved, perhaps its time for you to
help our people. Its a great way to make friends and offers a chance to
develop into well-rounded personalities.

If you are into outreach but not into editing, it is high time you editted
- otherwise you will miss out on great experiences and more importantly,
may also misread our Wikimedia culture - a phenomenon which seems to be
increasing.

So I suggest you eat your cake an have it too! Spend both sides of the
coin. Be a familiar face both on and off line. Edit & reach out.

Have fun & happy editting,

Ashwin Baindur

Hey Phillipe,

I am now aware that there is a possibility of releasing an IP from this rule.
But I learnt this the hard way! I sat through an outreach session where we
encountered blocking of IP and the participants were very disappointed because
they could not create their usernames. There is another mail from Subhashish
which echoes similar experience.

By way of working on this document and putting together small tips like these
will make sure that others don't go through this pain. I'd encourage everyone
to put their thoughts/learnings here so that all of us can benefit out of it
and make our outreach sessions more effective.

Thanks

hi Phillipe,

How much lead time would you need to enable this? Given that India and
US are in opposite sides of the world - you guys maybe sleeping while
we request an unblock.
What venues can we request an unblock - en email to you? On wiki-tech IRC?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Supporting Outreach

2011-12-20 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Probably some bot mechanism will work better.
People may not know the IP address from the venue before they start working.

Just setup a page where such IPs can be put up and a bot checks them
every 1-2 hours or so and enables IPs for 3-4 days. Authorisations for
specific users who are co-ordinating the event can be given well in
advance to add such IP entries.

That will help reduce communication and delay due to time zone related things.

Just went through the pictures. There are so many wonderful images from the

Thank you so much!

I am guessing the thank you should be directed to everyone in this image

+1. Great idea.

Pradeep,

//Perhaps somebody here has already brought this up, but you can now switch
languages on Commons using a drop down menu. You can spot the drop down
just below the Village Pump link. There is also a helpful site notice, that
suggested I read Commons in British English :)..//

This is also neatly done. I chose Tamil interface and closed the window.
After a while I came back to see
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_Takes_Kolkatadirectly.
It remembered my earlier preference and gave me a notice that I
can also see in Tamil.

While we are looking for a similar notice based on IP / availability of
Indic interwiki links, giving interface language options for en wiki is not
much useful. As Sumana rightly pointed out, we need to alert the users
about the existence of local language Wiki. Most of the major Indic Wiki
projects are online for more than 7 years now. But, 90%+ users who browse
en wiki do not know that they exist :( If they knew about them and chose to
read in English, that is altogether a different issue and can't be solved
technically.
