[Wikimediaindia-l] Stay safe, stay connected, an interaction zone: First talk with Asaf Bartov on 22 May 2021, Saturday

2021-05-15 Thread টিটো দত্ত Tito Dutta
 Hello,
Hope this email finds you safe in this difficult time. Many people and
Wikimedians have been affected or have suffered a loss. In an effort to
ensure community solidarity where Wikimedians can meet and talk to each
other, we are starting a lightweight interaction zone for the Wikimedians
in India. This interaction zone is named "Stay Safe Stay Connected".

Please see the event page here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Stay_safe,_stay_connected

The first talk will be on Saturday, 22 May 2021, 7 pm to 8 pm IST (1:30 pm
to 2:30 pm UTC). Asaf Bartov will be the guest of the session. Asaf is a
familiar name and he has been a mentor to many Wikimedians in India. This
will be a lightweight discussion on general Wiki-topic (note the exact
agenda will be updated on the event page before the event)

We invite you to join the first talk. The session will be hosted on Zoom.
Please fill this short form, if you are interested to attend the first
interactive talk on 22 May 2021
https://forms.gle/e85k84tX4oroKkjx7

Please follow the event page for updates. Stay safe, stay connected!

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Condition of a Wikimedian, arrested by UP Police

2021-05-09 Thread টিটো দত্ত Tito Dutta
Hello,
Indeed the news has been disturbing. I pray for Siddique's recovery.

I agree that it is important to have a legal support system in the Indian
Wikimedia ecosystem to safeguard Wikimedia volunteers for their Wikimedia
contribution/activities, or to provide necessary advice. As a member of
Access to Knowledge (A2K), I initiated a discussion sometime ago, to work
on a legal support model in India. I think we should work on it with
Wikimedia Foundation and the community to provide necessary support.
Suggestion is welcome.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] First Community Affairs Committee office hour on May 13

The CAC meeting is on 13 May. Please read details below.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] First Community Affairs Committee office hour on May
13
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

Hello, everyone.

TLDR:

The Board of Trustees’ Community Affairs Committee

(CAC) is hosting its first office hour on May 13, 2021 at 19:00 UTC (check
for your local time )!

Now in more details:

What are we announcing?

The CAC is a new Board of Trustees

committee established to assess, explore and address current and future
community-related efforts. The Committee's Charter

lists its full responsibilities, with the first 3 being a priority for this
coming year.

As part of our commitment to foster better communications with the
Wikimedia Movement Community, and based on feedback received from community
members requesting more availability from the Board of Trustees, the CAC
will be hosting its first Office hours.

When & Where?

The Office hours will be held on May 13 2021, at 19:00 UTC (check for your
local time ) via Zoom. At least
3 Trustees, as well as relevant WMF staff will be in attendance. The
session will be streamed live and recorded, so those who cannot participate
live will be able to watch later.

How will it work?

The meeting will last for 60 minutes and an additional 30 minutes of an
“open room”. The first 60 minutes will be divided into 45 minutes of
structured Q & A (based on either updates from the CAC and questions sent
by the community in advance). The final 15 minutes will be in the “ask us
anything” format, with live participation. We will be monitoring live
YouTube, Wikipedia Weekly Facebook group
 and the Wikimedia General
Chat Telegram group and the talk page on
Meta
.
The structure is meant to enable the CAC to not only update the community
on current matters the Board is working on, but also hear directly from the
community, which will help inform the Committee’s future work.

Setting the agenda with your Questions

In order to be as efficient as possible, and since we anticipate that some
questions will require answers from WMF Staff, we are encouraging community
members to send questions in advance. Please send all questions to
ask...@wikimedia.org, by Friday, May 7th (midnight, whatever time zone you
may be in). The office hour agenda will be based on the main topics related
to the questions received. We will share this agenda on Meta

on May 12, including final names of Trustees in attendance.

How to register?

For security reasons and specifically to avoid Zoombombing
, we will be sending the Zoom
link only to people who have registered in advance close to the meeting. In
order to register, please send an email to ask...@wikimedia.org, indicating
your name, username, affiliation if you have any. The title should be:
“Registration for the May 13th CAC Office Hours”.

Please note --

   -

This is the first time that the Board is attempting something of the
sort. This is an experiment. We’ll see how it goes - how many people are
interested in attending, timing, translation needs etc -- and make
decisions about future meetings / changes to format accordingly.
   -

The session will be moderated based on the Universal Code of Conduct

   -

Universally blocked users will not be allowed in the room, but can still
participate by watching live and sending questions in real-time.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this message with your local /
online communities.

Hoping to see as many of you as possible,

Shani Evenstein Sigalov

Chair, Community Affairs Committee

Board of Trustees, Wikimedia Foundation.

Hello Andreas and all,

There is some good news. Wikimedia Foundation Community Resources team has
given permission to CIS-A2K to allot funds to reimburse vaccines, send
COVID protection kits and provide counselling for Wikimedia volunteers in
India. CIS-A2K has consulted Foreign Currency Regulation Act expert lawyers
and got confirmation that the program can be executed as per the law of
India. With this progress, we are now good to go. We had formed a 5-members
committee of physicians (4 of them) from the Indian Wikimedia volunteer
community. They had their first meeting almost an hour ago to decide the
next steps to provide support as quickly and efficiently as possible. The
action points are noted from the meeting and within a few days, we are sure
that we will be able to provide support to the volunteers. A meta page is
also being drafted, which will undergo expansion and modification in the
next few years. The lnk is here -

Bodhisattwa

[Wikimediaindia-l] “Care”-ful and Effective Wikimedia Community Engagement process, especially during COVID-19 pandemic

2021-04-13 Thread টিটো দত্ত Tito Dutta
Namaskara,
I believe that it is a shared feeling that there are too many important
processes going on simultaneously or starting one after another, asking,
reminding and re-reminding for community inputs/involvement. This is not
only adding stress on the community, but the community input process is
also becoming ineffective gradually.
This is also alarming during the pandemic when people are already stressed
for various reasons.

We are currently having the Strategy2030 implementation process, at the
same time Wikimedia Board redesign process, and at the same time new grants
relaunch process, at the same time several other things such as UCoC, A2K
needs-assessment and various other things etc. In case you are not getting
a lot of response, I believe one of the major reasons is: there are just
too many things.

Thinking from a volunteer’s perspective, an editor gets an hour or two in a
day and has very limited time to make contributions to a Wikimedia project
such as Wikidata or Wikisource.

FOMO: We can’t really say that all the processes and RfCs are optional and
no one is forcing anything. There is a concept called “FOMO (Fear of
Missing Out)”. If there is an important process like Strategy2030, Board
redesign, grants redesign or some A2K RfC is going on, there will
definitely be a sense of guilt inside a Wikimedian that they did not
participate. More importantly, all these need maximum participation.

Think of this: If you want to put a Wikimedia central notice or banner, you
don’t go directly and put the banner. Isn't it so? But you go through a
process, discuss on a central noticeboard, where the Meta-Wiki
stewards/admins align things, place things in the queue and eliminate
excessiveness.
Let’s think of a situation when you open a Wiki(m/p)edia page and you see
there are four or five banners covering everything at the top asking for
inputs on various things. So many banners — how bad it would look like.
Unfortunately, something similar is happening with the community input
process now.

== Solution process ==
To ensure a) care towards the community, b) that we get the best inputs for
the most important processes, here are a few suggestions (I believe
collectively we can find a more detailed and better process)
* There should be a central body ensuring that there are not too many
overlapping things for a particular community, project or zone. Currently,
all the things are simultaneous, without noting or caring that there are
several other things.
* Please do a community health check: I am seeing everywhere there is not
much response/involvement these days. I believe Community involvement and
Community health need some serious study.
* During a pandemic, make a priority list, and please postpone/stop the
things which are not really urgent.

I am sending this email too to Wikimediaindia-l, I am more comfortable at
my home-mailing-list. I hope the message will be relayed if you think it
makes sense.

Wishing you a Happy Ugadi (Kn: ಯುಗಾದಿ, Te: ఉగాది), Pahela Baishakh (Bn:
পহেলা বৈশাখ, As: ৰঙালী বিহু) or greetings for your new year/festival.
Regards.

Participate before 12 April!
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

Dear friends and colleagues,

As we announced a few days back, we're compiling a video farewell for
Katherine, and we would love for you all to participate and send her off
with a few words. This takes 30 seconds! Maybe a thank you or a joke in
your language, maybe parts of a song, maybe just a hand-held picture and a
few words, maybe a funny memory you have with her so that she gets to keep
a live feeling of all of her Wikimedia community friends and colleagues for
years to come.

Katherine’s last day as ED of the Wikimedia Foundation will be next
Thursday, April 15. If you’d like to share a short message, please record
the video via your phone or computer by going to the Tribute webpage
 [1]. Please keep your message
under 30 seconds! The deadline to submit a video is Monday, April 12.*

This will be shared with her and something she'll get to look at to recall
all the people who make our movement, beyond the nicknames and the
editcount.

Please share this message on other mailing lists as widely as you can!

Thank you for your participation!

[Wikimediaindia-l] Open letter to Wikimedia Foundation Board: COVID-19: Exceptional Situation Needs Exceptional Measures

2021-04-05 Thread টিটো দত্ত Tito Dutta
Hello Wikimedia Foundation Board,

In a part of this email, although I am recalling things as a Program
Person, I am writing this email entirely as a volunteer. I have been
contributing to the movement for several years now, and my questions and
comments are in my volunteer capacity. I request you to kindly assume good
faith.

In the first week of August 2020, when India started suffering from the
first wave of COVID-19, I, as a part of the A2K program in India, wrote to
Wikimedia Foundation and informed them that every year to conduct a series
of workshops, etc. This year the situation was different and the pandemic
was affecting many lives, definitely, the Wikimedians around were also
affected. We asked, as part of care, could we spend a part of the budget to
provide Corona insurances to Wikimedians and families in India?

Wikimedia Foundation wrote back to us after some time and informed us that
that was not possible for several reasons such as legal concerns regarding
insurance registration as well as settlement and liability issues, or it
will set up precedence which can not be continued with other affiliates
etc. I won't go into detail, however in brief the idea was not allowed.

Now, at the time of writing this open letter, India has started facing the
second wave (yesterday we have seen 100,000 confirmed cases in India for
the first time) count. "We never did" or "this will create precedence" can
not be the reason for not doing something. We, in the movement, have spent
quite a lot of money on different things including brand awareness.

We talk about WP:EXCEPTIONAL, an exceptional situation requires exceptional
measures and actions. This "is" an exceptional situation and needs
"exceptional attention".

Most probably the Wikimedia board is in a position to make a decision. I am
not sure what Wikimedia Foundation has done to "directly" support the
Wikimedians globally during this pandemic.

Is it possible that Wikimedia Foundation spends a certain percentage of
their revenue (such as 20% of the total annual revenue) to directly support
affected Wikimedians globally? I am not asking to support everyone, as that
might be out of scope, in the movement.

Can Wikimedia spend a certain percentage of the Wikimedia movement's total
annual revenue for the current and next year to plan various things to
support and compensate affected Wikimedians?

Otherwise, in any other major and sustainable way, it would be awesome if
the Wikimedia Foundation shows their care.

Please assume good faith.

Regards.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Call for feedback: WMF Community Board seats & Office hours tomorrow

2021-02-01 Thread টিটো দত্ত Tito Dutta
Greetings,
Thanks for the message.
*>>Quotas. Explore the possibility of introducing quotas to ensure certain
types of diversity in the Board (details about these quotas to be discussed
in this call for feedback).*
My personal thought is possibly some other word can be used instead of
"quota" or "quota introduction"? If it is related to encouraging diversity,
then calling "Diversity encouragement" might be an option.
Thanks for the consideration.
