Seems like a good solution Stella, thank you! We all make mistakes,
especially in organisations, and we know you mean well and that this was a
genuine mistake. I hope Fae will see attribution as fine.

Fae obviously feels very strongly about large museums and open rights, and
he's put a lot of emotional effort into pushing things to be more open. We
all have, and sometimes our feeling comes through very strongly and can
read as a little harsh.

But don't forget that you and your colleagues are part of our community

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Virtual meetups

2020-05-07 Thread Richard Symonds
Maybe.

But IRC is all but useless to most people - much too technical and niche -
and only IT developers and those with basic IT skills know what Slack is.
Despite being a Wikipedian, I only ever used it because people would insist
I did to talk to them - but I'd never be able to talk to new users on it -
they'd usually use email (or I'd phone them). Most professions have never
heard of IRC or slack.

My work has only started using Teams in the last month, and most of us
don't use that except in very specific circumstances, or where we have to
because of the pandemic.

I'm aware of Zoombombing - very much aware - but Zoom is one of several
options, and frankly it's no worse than IRC (or Wikipedia!) in terms of how
quickly things can go wrong.

I think we can think about a video chat app we should be using, to help new
people get involved and run remote events. MS Teams is good enough for work
in criminal courts, surely there's something we can look at that's
reasonably new?

The categorising this year was so much easier, I have to say - there's a
proper system for it now, and it's supported with really good software
accessible online. It took me about 1/4 of the time it would normally take

12 hour shifts! Of the pictures I saw this year, the quality was really
high - Katherine is right when she says they were gorgeous!

To go back to my original point, rather than off on a tangent about
something that happened many years ago:

I think it's really important we reach out to the IWM through WMUK's
professional networks, with face-to-face meetings, and would really support
WMUK if they chose to do that. I think to do so would be more productive
than a grassroots campaign in this instance.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Copyfraud by the British Museum (John Byrne)

2017-07-28 Thread Richard Symonds
First: I know me and you haven't got on very well in the past Fae, so I
want to underline that this email is meant in the friendliest way possible.
I really appreciate the work you do on Commons, and am deeply struck by the
passion with which you approach our shared goal. We're both on the same
team - working for free knowledge.

That said, there's a bit of criticism - constructive, I hope. I'm not sure
if further emails like the ones at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:F%C3%A6/email/IWM would be very
helpful - they didn't work at the time, and clearly haven't worked in the
past four years, despite your tweeting. The issue the IWM had in that case
was that they didn't agree with you that it was copyfraud. The solution
would be a sit-down talk between professionals, that is as you say, "invest
some resources into changing their minds".

I remember trying this with the IWM in 2013 - at the time, I was talking to
the institution about the WW1 centenary, which they were the driving force
behind. They were happy to talk, and extremely friendly, and we had several
meetings with them. However, they had issues with the emails that you were
sending to them, which they saw as rude, passive-aggressive, and generally
unhelpful. The institution didn't see them as polite correspondence, and it
made them reticent to work with Wikipedia because they didn't feel like
they could be a part of a community that spoke to people like that. I know
that to you the emails were professional and to the point, and objectively
correct. But to them it came across as unprofessional, and that it happened
during the run-up to the WWI centenary made it very difficult for Wikipedia
to get involved in the commemorations in any more than a passive capacity.
You redoubled your efforts after you saw the IWM refusing to change, but
sometimes, our passion for change - for righting the wrongs in the world -
makes us seem like fanatics to middle-managers in cultural institutions.
This pushed them away, and made it harder for them to understand our point
of view.

The solution here is, as you say, friendly and professional discussions -
social media campaigns about it, as well as using words like "copyfraud"
(which invoke thoughts of criminality in the minds of the reader), are
counterproductive. We need to be professional and approachable, engendering
change through example, and although social media campaigns and shaming
work sometimes (and are legitimate ways of forcing change on an old
institution), we have to be careful not to go to it as a first option,
especially when our strength in WMUK is our professional connections
throughout the third sector and "GLAM" world.

[Wikimediauk-l] I'm moving on!

2016-08-03 Thread Richard Symonds
Hello everyone!

I've worked for Wikimedia UK since just before we hired our first Chief
Executive, but it's time for me to hang up my "staff" hat. At the end of
August, I'll be leaving Wikimedia UK for a new role - still in London, but
doing something rather different, and with a fair bit more responsibility.
Those of you who are my friends will know what this new job entails - I'd
ask you to keep it to yourselves. To those of you who don't, you're free to
ask me on Facebook!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Wikimedia UK under both Jon and Lucy.
It's really something to see how the charity has changed over the years -
from a small, absurdly hopeful organisation with limitless opportunities,
to a larger, but more stable and more focused charity with a solid track
record of events and partnerships, and with what I firmly believe to now be
(post-governance-review) the best governance in the movement.

I have full confidence in the team of staff and volunteers here to keep
things moving forward, even if Richard Nevell does get overly focused on
castles from time to time. I'll be staying on as a volunteer, of course,
and I will probably focus my initial efforts on sending Richard Nevell
pictures of castles while he's working, which I'm pretty sure counts
towards our metrics.

On a more productive note, highlights of my time here include:

   - Learning to cycle in London (pictures not on Commons, although there
   might be a video)
   - Our "Finance and Fundraising communal pickled onion jar", relabelled
"pickled fox" after went on the NHM Spirits Tour (pictures not on Commons,
   except perhaps in the background)
   - The "Wikimedia UK does WLM" tour of an unlit Grade II listed Victorian
   Public Convenience (pictures on Commons)
   - Driving Katherine Bavage to despair by uploading pictures of her to
Commons, and only then explaining what Commons is (I await the inevitable
deletion request from someone who takes this too seriously)
   - Participating in the Chutney Making from Waste Fruit and Vegetables
World Record Attempt, a World record attempt for amount of people making
chutney simultaneously (pictures not taken, too busy eating chutney)
   - Wikimania 2014, which only those who served can *truly*
understand (pictures
on Commons, I imagine, although I tried to avoid them)

I wish everyone at Wikimedia UK - volunteers and staff - all the best,
especially Daria, who now holds the crown for "longest serving staff
member". Working at Wikimedia UK has been an enlightening experience, but
also a privilege, and something which I will never forget.

[Wikimediauk-l] Fire escape changes at Wikimedia UK

2016-04-21 Thread Richard Symonds
All,

Slightly dull email, but an important one for those of you who drop into
the office regularly.

There has been a change in the fire escape routes for the Wikimedia UK
offices.

If you’re in the basement area and the fire alarm sounds, DO NOT exit
through the courtyard. Instead, exit through the Archive Room and turn
right to access the external fire escape stairwell. Go up one flight of
stairs, open the black gate and you will exit onto ground level.

We have changed the fire escape signage to mark the new escape route - when
you're next here, if you want to be shown the new route, let us know and
we'll point it out.

All the best,

[Wikimediauk-l] #‎WhereIsBassel‬ campaign

2016-03-18 Thread Richard Symonds
All,

A bit of a notice for you which has been shared around our social media
accounts... I thought I'd share it here as well, for completeness.
Apologies as it's a copy and paste from the event directly and it's not a
WMUK-run event - but obviously we'll be showing our support where we can.

The Jimmy Wales Foundation <https://www.facebook.com/JimmyWalesFoundation/> is
asking people to join the global protest for the ‪#‎WhereIsBassel‬
<https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/whereisbassel?source=feed_text&story_id=1166054480073376>
campaign
on the 19th March in London (Marble Arch at 2pm), Paris, Berlin, Boston,
San Francisco and more.

The Facebook event page is at
https://www.facebook.com/events/1585961515027211/
<https://www.facebook.com/events/1585961515027211/?ref=3&ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular&action_history=null&source=3&source_newsfeed_story_type=regular>

Bassel Khartabil
<https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bassel-Khartabil/455212144510107> has been
imprisoned in Syria since March 15, 2012. A passionate advocate of
free-knowledge, he worked as the lead of Creative Commons Syria, and a
major contributor to Mozilla. He was also an editor of the Arabic Wikipedia.

His latest open-knowledge project has been an effort to preserve the
cultural heritage of Syria, in the city of Palmyra. Currently under threat
of groups like ISIS, who have been destroying ancient structures despite
reassurances that they would be spared, ‪#‎NEWPALMYRA‬
<https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/newpalmyra?source=feed_text&story_id=1166054480073376>
hopes
to use 3D modelling and free media to recreate what is being destroyed.

Following Bassel's arrest in Damascus in 2012, he was charged by the
government of Syria with "harming state security". Bassel was put on trial
without legal representation and was subjected to torture. In October 2015,
reports emerged that Bassel disappeared from his prison cell. Rumours
suggested that Bassel had been sentenced to death.

As volunteers for Wikimedia UK it can be easy to forget that we are safe
and well - and able to edit freely. GLAM institutions welcome editors and
Wikipedians in Residence. We enjoy balanced coverage of our endeavours. And
though we may not always be happy with the results, public officials can &
will still engage freely with our movement.

There are also the twin foundations of Creative Commons
<https://www.facebook.com/creativecommons/> and open software, both of
which Bassel has contributed so much to, and without which none of our work
could be possible.

So we are asking you to please join us when we stand at Marble Arch this
weekend to ask #WhereisBassel? We will be wearing face masks with Bassel's
image on them and demand justice for a wronged free knowledge advocate.

[Wikimediauk-l] Sell through eBay for Wikimedia UK

2016-03-09 Thread Richard Symonds
Hello all!

After a few updates from PayPal and a new agreement with them, we're now
listed on "eBay for charity".

This means that, by going to
http://www.ebay.co.uk/egw/ebay-for-charity/charity-profile/?NP_ID=133871,
you can donate a portion of the proceeds from any eBay sales you make to
Wikimedia UK. In return, eBay will waive a percentage of the fees for your
sale equal to the percentage you donate. You can also Gift Aid the amount
you donate, and we'll get the Gift Aid on the donated funds, too!

You can read more about the scheme at
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/ebayforcharity/sell.html. There's also a benefit in
that our general PayPal donation fees (which we pay on donations made
through credit/debit cards) are reduced.

If you have any questions, or want to know more, please let me know. I
can't promise I'll be able to answer them all, but I'll try!

All the best,

[Wikimediauk-l] Free as in beer

2016-02-29 Thread Richard Symonds
So...

BrewDog, a Scotland-based "hipster brewery" - for want of a better phrase -
have just "open-sourced" their entire recipe collection.

You can read more at https://www.brewdog.com/lowdown/blog/diy-dog.

It's not entirely clear what "licence" they're using but they say:

*"copy them, tear them to pieces, bastardise them, adapt them, but most of
all, enjoy them. They are well travelled but with plenty of miles still
left on the clock. Just remember to share your brews, and share your
results. Sharing is caring."*

I guess "free as in beer" has a slightly different meaning now!

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Commons image request help

2016-02-23 Thread Richard Symonds
Depends - if you're approaching an individual, I've always had more success
pushing the "donate your images for the good of everyone" line - which
you'll be good at because you're a fundraiser - you probably have better
ideas than me!

If it's an institution it's more complex. John Cummings is a good person to
talk to about it. The OTRS permission email can be a stumbling block
because OTRS demand a specific wording and due to the volume of emails they
get they can seem a bit unhelpful at times (they're so busy, it's
understandable)

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Photos from the party...and media coverage of the 15th birthday

2016-01-19 Thread Richard Symonds
Just a quick addendum: the photos have just been uploaded to Commons at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_15_in_the_United_Kingdom
too, but not in a specific category for the London event (as I know there
was an Oxford one too).

It takes a bit longer to put them on Commons than Facebook, as there's more
info required, but I believe they're now geocoded and categorised correctly.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Next meetups in the North-West: Manchester 23 Jan, Liverpool 27 Feb

2016-01-19 Thread Richard Symonds
Both events added to Facebook to see if we can drum up some nearby support
from newer people.

Manchester: https://www.facebook.com/events/1676236382627258/
Liverpool: https://www.facebook.com/events/480114548840317/

Photos are, of course, credited appropriately, but it would be nice to have
a sunnier one of the Liverpool location - the current picture us an admiral
effort but unfortunately taken on a rainy day. Such is Britain!

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Reminder about the PARTY tomorrow!

2016-01-18 Thread Richard Symonds
Mike,

Definitely something we wanted to do, but our budget for this was seriously
limited, to the point where even a party within walking distance of our
office, at a donated venue, was stretching things. There was one in Oxford,
which, while not central or north, I'd be willing to accept (as a
Wulfrunian) as "Midlands-ish, sort of". Kudos to the Oxonians who put it
together.

In future we should have more distributed events around the country, but
we'd need volunteers who were willing to lead on the event - just like
Wikimeets. Is there anyone who might be willing to do so next time we do
something like this?

[Wikimediauk-l] Christmas closures

2015-11-05 Thread Richard Symonds
All,

It's probably too early to wish you all a "Merry Christmas", so instead I
have some rather dull news about the UK office over the holidays.

The Wikimedia UK Office is closed for the Christmas break between 19
December 2015 and 3 January 2016. This is in line with our landlords
expected closing times. The office phones may not be answered and it will
not be possible to visit the London office without a prior appointment with
a member of staff.

This doesn't mean we're necessarily we're all away, as some staff will be
in and out of the offices and most will be answering emails here and there,
but you can expect a lower level of activity from our end.

In the meantime, happy bonfire night!

Gordo - sadly we don't have the budget or time to upgrade to Phabricator.
Given how few of us use our installation anyway, it would be a fair amount

As for the certificate, I've had a few reports of problems but haven't been
able to replicate them, and the certificate seems fine... so I will ask

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Fwd: [Talk-GB] Environment Agency LIDAR datasets OGL licensed now available

2015-10-01 Thread Richard Symonds
I've just knocked up the one at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heightmap_of_Trencrom_Hill.png. I
haven't added it to any articles but it's there to use if you want!

It's not much work, but the issue is that the heightmaps tend to not cover
Wales or Scotland, and they tend to cover flood zones, rather than hills.
This makes tracking down high-resolution data of castles/hills (which tend
to be high up) rather difficult. Most of England is covered with 1 metre
resolution though, with 25cm being the best.

Aye, I can't send it from CiviCRM though, and in the past members have
raised the point that membership communications like this should *really* go
to members first - then to the general public a few hours later.

I'll forward the email to the list in a few minutes.

Andy, re: your question - I'll chase it up with D'Arcy but as far as I know
things are still slightly in flux till the end of the month. That said, if
people want to talk to us about programmes, they should go to Daria in the
first instance - anything else should go to myself, and I'll forward it on
to the right person while things are in flux!

Hello,

back in June we had a thread announcing that this LIDAR data was due
to be released. Well some of it has.

https://environmentagency.blog.gov.uk/2015/09/18/laser-surveys-light-up-open-data/

http://environment.data.gov.uk/ds/survey#/

I think it's just for England, and appears to be 1m and 2m composite
DTM and 1m and 2m DSM They do intend to release a Tiled version next,
and I think 50cm and 25cm are coming also

What can we do with it?

Cheers,

Tim

He's emailed back and said:

"The trouble with this bit of kit (well don't get me started) is that it is
really not up to a professional job and restricted to Super 8.

If the material is at all historic the regional film organisations e.g.

...will copy over using a professional process (liquid gate) that takes

He also says that there is the germ of an idea for WMUK here though -
perhaps having a contract with a decent provider who would digitise them
for us. It's something we will have to look at over the next few months to
see if it can fit in our future plans!

[Wikimediauk-l] Upcoming event in London

2015-06-29 Thread Richard Symonds
Hi All,

Not Wikimedia related but something in the UK which I think you'll all find
great fun. I've been to a few of these in the past and they're well worth
going to. It's something that I'd love us to be involved with in future
years... but in the meantime, I encourage you to sit in the audience!

http://pintofscience.co.uk/

*"An Evening with Mike Foale will feature the former record-breaking
astronaut talk about his experiences. We’ll also be connecting live to the
International Space Station and videoconferencing with Commander Scott
Kelly who is currently three months into his one year living on the
International Space Station. From King’s College London Dr David Green will
talk about the development of a Gravity Loading Skinsuit to prevent muscle
and bone loss in Space, and Dr Julie Keeble will explain how to prepare
student experiments for launch to the International Space Station. The
event takes place in a theatre and so is open to people of all ages. Please
note there are two types of tickets, student (£9) which includes those
still at school and university students and full-price (£18), click below
for more details. The proceeds will go to the charity ISSET which aims to
utilise space exploration to inspire and motivate young people to believe
that they can become what they want to be."*

It's a shame I won't be able to go, but it's really worth going to these.
You learn a lot!

[Wikimediauk-l] Website downtime next month

2015-06-22 Thread Richard Symonds
All,

There may be some downtime on Wikimedia UK's website(s) next month, on July
15, from 00:01 to 04:00. Ideally it won't take more than five minutes but
could be up to four hours.

This is because our hosting provider are performing some routine
maintenance work on their servers.

This shouldn't be a huge problem, but I thought I'd let you all know just
in case.
