This is, of course, the way that we originally started the newsletters/reports
way back in 2008, when we took the Signpost model and adapted it. ;-)

E.g. see:

http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_UK_v2.0/Newsletter/Subscribers

Thanks,

A model such as the Wikipedia signpost might work...

Which, for those that don't know, has a fairly regular format of things it
covers (with a nice layout), plus it accepts articles/editorial from the
community.

I'm sure the current monthly reports could be formatted in a similar way;
find someone to be an "editor" to write the intro each month, and perhaps
coerce jon into writing a short CE's report and you have the makings of a
newsletter.

Then it's a case of drumming up other articles :)

I absolutely agree with Harry and Andreas that the newsletter should
reach beyond the chapter & list communities to the much larger group of
UK-based editors and readers. And donors, though they are supposed to
be getting their own version. We should always bear this in mind, and
encourage contributions from outside the existing r-l community, but
probably early numbers will concentrate UK news on chapter & meetup
affairs, as well as wider issues like the internet bill thingy. But the
main thing is to get one going. Obviously, from the chapter POV, the
newsletter should be a prime means of reaching out to the wider
community and recruiting active volunteers.

This conversation seems to have ground to a halt. I'm keen to support any
work that the community wants to see done to develop a more interesting

Do share some ideas at

Indeed. Delivery is relatively easy - there are several bots on various wikis
already dedicated to delivering various newsletters.

What I'd really like to see is a newsletter for the UK community and not just
the chapter, which the current reports cover to an extent. Having such a
newsletter delivered in a Signpost-style format every month could go a long way
towards getting more people involved and increasing the profile/understanding
of the chapter among the editing communities.

Would it be feasible to deliver a WMUK newsletter the way the Signpost is
delivered, i.e. to subscribers' talk pages in Wikipedia (and perhaps other

The WMUK website and mailing list are a bit of a walled garden. Visibility

But it seems to work for the GLAM newsletter, where e.g. there is a 'UK report'
with pretty much the same intent as the 'Wikimedia UK report'?

2012-11-16 Thread Stevie Benton
I don't think it's a box-ticking exercise at all - the reports have been
this way for a long time. Also, we want the community to have an editorial
voice - that's why much of the content is written by volunteers and we
encourage people to get involved (hence the reminders).

Could it be better? Yes, of course. If a Signpost-style production is your
favoured option, let's take some time to sketch out some ideas. I've
created a very basic page on the UK wiki for us to make a start. I'd
encourage anyone with suggestions to get involved in the conversation. It's

Perhaps because the "report" is a really dull surrogate for a proper
newsletter, allowing the community an editorial voice? And
contributing to our public life. Such as the Signpost. And instead
looks like the fulfilment of a reporting requirement of a box-ticking
kind.

It doesn't seem to be working!

We do ask that if you've taken part in any WMUK activity that you add it to
the report if you're able. I'm not sure why that seems to have dropped off,
but there have been plenty of reminders and calls for content. I'd be
grateful that people do add what they've been up to and include ways for
people to get involved too, if possible.

Perhaps there are people reading this message who have more to add?

Thank you,

Stevie

Is this system working? Nothing has been added in the last nine days.
Workshops I took part in during October should surely be added as a
matter of course. What happened to Ada Lovelace Day?
