Re: [WISPA] Thieves Steal Tower

2008-09-10 Thread 3-dB Networks
I thought everyone had those on their towers :-)

Seriously though, IP cameras are great. The reason we got to know inscape
is someone was messing with one of Mesa's remote towers. So everytime
someone came up the road to this mountain top our camera would start
recording and send us an alert.

Re: [WISPA] PowerCode

2008-09-10 Thread John McDowell
Mark,

I was with you there around the same time with very similar sentiments.
Among other things I was trying to get something resolved on our Vox Voip
service and billing it through powercode. Although we haven't come to a
solution on that, mainly being I'm not willing pay for it nor try it at the
moment and instead paying my accounting lady overtime to keep track of Vox's
bills and our voip customer overages.

But, having said that. I believe the guys at PowerCode have made some very
good changes, one of the main ones being the ticketing system you just
mentioned. I've had a lot of success with our tickets and problems.

They are putting out new code almost everyday, and they actually explain the
bug fixes and new features on the homepage for every release.

We are learning to use the new Inventory module which actually lets you
barcode scan a Subscriber Mac address right off the box.

Another cool feature that we haven't tested yet is the new Mac Address
learning feature that allows customers to plug in their own device and PC
will auto-add. Customer can check all this through their portal.

All in all...PC is still the most advanced WISP billing and OSS on the
market, hands down.

And I'm with you Mark, I have a renewed sense of confidence in their support
and flagship product, the billing, crm, and bandwidth management.

Glad to hear you've got an Imagestream BMU. Trust me, it makes a world of
difference.

Re: [WISPA] OT: Sales CRM sugestion

2008-09-10 Thread Tom DeReggi
Ther are always the generic products

SugarCRM, Salesforce.com, Goldmine. All good products, to maximize sales
rep's processes.

However, I'd like to see a product that integrates into a WISP operations
system, with opportunity management, easilly converting to orders for
provisioning.
I believe Intrameda's Boss has some features for process flow engineering,
which I bet potentially could integrate into sales automation?.

[WISPA] PowerCode

2008-09-10 Thread Mark Nash
I gave off a little rant awhile back about how PowerCode wasn't being
responsive, and I'd like to update that. They are now being pretty
responsive to bug reports. One of the first things they did was to set me
up with a new customer portal so that I can create my own tickets for their
support. I can login to the portal and see what's been done on my tickets,
and there are email notices as well when a ticket has been updated. This,
by the way, is the same portal system that the PowerCode software allows me
to use for MY customers to be able to create and update tickets.

There have been some changes, some major some minor. They made a
fundamental change in the way that contacts are handled. This jostled my
guys a bit but we're getting used to it. A couple of my issues were
resolved. A big one is that my "virtual server" is now in my timezone!
That was huge for alot of reasons (accounting, CRM, logs, billing now
happens on the 1st day of THIS month instead of the last day of LAST month).

So there are still several little things that are hanging out there, but I
feel that my concerns ARE being addressed. Meaning, my TICKETS are being
updated and I can see progress, and I'm happier now. I'm seeing new
features all around PowerCode. I've purchased (though not implemented yet)
an ImageStream BMU, so that should speak to my confidence level. That thing
was $1900...

Seems they are progressing.

Mark

Re: [WISPA] OT: Sales CRM suggestion

2008-09-10 Thread John McDowell
Yeah, I don't know exactly what a true CRM program is but PowerCode has been
a great tool for us to follow sales from lead to activation.

Brian! I Put in a special feature request to have your awesome coverage maps
integrated with PowerCode.

Powercode maps all your leads, subs, APs etc into a Google Maps API then
shows their proximity to each other...how cool would it be if you could
overlay our propagation maps with that???

I'm not sure on that. We've only ordered a few to test with and that was

you could get close to that $300 number if you order in bulk.

Re: [WISPA] frequency converters

2008-09-10 Thread Tom DeReggi
John,

The radios I was referring to when I mentioned 23G under $6k was Snaplink.
But I mistakenly stated the spectrum, it is actually 24Ghz unlicened.
Its a FDX 50mbps link. Its a good affordable option, when its a short
distance, and top speed is not needed.
Still not as low as I'd like, down to Atheros/SBC pricing, or ext freq
converter.

However, based on Trango's new low promo prices, its hard to justify using
anything else for backhaul.

Most radios have some sort of intermediate frequency; the chips that
process the data don't work at 5.8ghz, etc... Satellite systems work
much the same way; your 12ghz dish/directtv/fta doesn't work on an rg6
cable at that frequency.

The Alvarion BA-II tower gear has the downconverter electronics in the
outdoor unit. I'm not sure, but I think it was in the 400mhz range that
the DC+RF went to the base. They came with RG58 cables which technically

worked perfect, but were a bit fragile on the ends. We could run lmr400
300+ feet with no problems and use lightning arrestors that support DC
power. That what the system is for; so there would be no serious cable
loss on long runs. Probably most of the coax based split system radio
links work in a similar way. We've had zero problems with the indoor
portions of these systems. If there is lightning damage, it's typically
isolated to the outdoor part. I'd rather lose an outdoor unit than a
whole site's ethernet ports.

I'd tested the ubiquity sr9 cards when they came out; they convert 2.4
to 900. It picked up too much 2.4 interference from other radio cards
for my liking.

I'd tested the ubiquity sr9 cards when they came out; they convert 2.4
to 900. It picked up too much 2.4 interference from other radio cards
for my liking.

Re: [WISPA] your thoughts on opps in Africa?

2008-09-10 Thread John Scrivner
In the case of South Africa I know what is going on. The government owns the
phone company there. There is a conflict of interest. The regulators get
paid by the same people running the phone company. It would be like AT&T
being owned by the FCC or vice-versa. How hard do you think we would have it
here then? I am guessing that other countries in Africa have similar
conflicts of interest or corruption which leads to businesses being unable
to work in an environment where regulations are a moving target or they are
only favorable when the right people get a secret payday.

Re: [WISPA] frequency converters

2008-09-10 Thread John Scrivner
Actually what you are describing is very similar to what they did. They used
an intermediate frequency to feed between the base and the tower. The
difference is that there are likely more frequency conversions in your
scenario than the Alvarion / Breezecom setup. In their systems there is only
one up / down conversion at the top.

If we win it I would think it would be interesting for WISPA itself to

Re: [WISPA] frequency converters

I have some RF KLInx 2.4 to 900MHz frequency converters that have been
on operation for about 6 years now. They work fine altthough they will
soon be coming out and replaced with a new product.

One place I thought frequency converters would be nice is on towers that
are too tall to run cable for 5 gig.
Would be nice to have a converter that lowers it from 5 gig at the
bottom and brings it back to 5 gig at the top, this way the radios can
stay at the bottom.

Isn't that how Breezecom Alvarion did some of their stuff in the past?

I wish someone made a frequency converter to go from 5.8 to 24 GHz. There is
250 khz of open unlicensed space at that frequency which would be ideal for
backhaul use in places where we are tight in 5.8. I would be using a paif of
those on a sale today if they were available.

What frequency are you wanting to convert? We used 2.4 - 5.8 converters
for a backhaul link for several years it was only after lightning took
out one radio that we changed it to an actual PtP bridge. Ours was
karlnet 2.4 with Orinoco card and 2.4 t0 5.8 converter. Used winncom
converters by the way.
