Want to truly take nothing? Seriously? The mere existence of the Internet is due to government funding. The wires that connect your little corner of Oregon to the great wide world? Probably wouldn't have happened without government subsidies. The same is true around the world. A lot of the research that drives the technology getting your bits across the wire...hmmm...government funding, as well. You're in the wrong industry to invent a moral highroad about government subsidisations. Telecomm is considered a utility, and utilities will always be subsidised by governments. Always have been, and always will be. On Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 5:29 PM, rea...@muddyfrogwater.us wrote: The fact is, the only things we're doing wrong, is allowing too much subsidy, too many barriers to entry into the business, and too much tax money to be gobbled up. In all of these countries with so-called great broadband, how much is ACTUALLY spent by the consumers and taxpayers? Nobody knows. I will guarantee you it is WELL MORE than anyone pays here. No, not the price of subsidized services, the total spending divided by users and taxpayers. What is the actual return on broadband?I can tell you honestly, that with the exception of a small handful of my customers, the only return is time saved, with no monetary returns. For a few, it does have financial implications, and they do earn or save money.I'd say it was under 10%. Now, that's RESIDENTIAL customers.Business customers have a far different viewpoint... And they often pay well more than residential service prices to get SLA's, etc. Subsidizing the residential users with taxpayers is both economically wrong, and just plain common sense wrong. But as far as the article goes.. We need MORE free market and less interference. Broadband would spread faster, not slower. And be more, not less, competitive. But we have to recognize some things... There are historically created monopolies, and there are current monopolies, and these monopolies exist due to force of law. If there's anything that's held up broadband, it's these monopolies. Local and state laws often create monopolies by placing huge impediments to new startups, or wireless deployments, and often absolutely and totally forbid WIRED competition for phone and cable operators by offering exclusive franchises. The number of competitive wired phone operators is nil, for all practical purposes, for a lot of reasons. Yet, we have no end in sight of the wireless phone guys competing for your dollar. In rural America, far too much land is governmentally owned, and is the single largest obstacle to wireless deployments. Eastern Oregon, for instance is hugely Federal, some state, and tiny spots of private land. Trying to use federal or state land is just simply not feasible, especially if you're provider #2 for a town of 2000 people and you're trying to be cost competitive. And Congress can't seem to figure out that handing out grants to people who are experts at milking the sow in DC isn't cost effective or in any other way effective. Those who can, do, those who can't, get grants or loans. Not universally, but at least around here, that's the case. Here is Eastern Oregon, we have one company that invested minimal money of their own, but bilked the state for millions, and uses state money (mine, no less) to deploy fiber to compete with non subsidized WISP's and other ISP's. And, since their contract is written in a certain way, they use the LEAST cost effective means of reaching people. They get paid by the state to waste money, IMO. And are they friendly to being cooperative iwth other ISP's? Hell no. Every time you offer public subsidy, you simply invite the taxpayers to get screwed endlessly. And we're ALL taxpayers. If you want to lobby DC and get my support, then the following words and this idea will NEVER surface in what you say... Give us money from the taxpayers. If you want to talk tax breaks, if you want to talk legal classifications, if you want to talk about barriers to services, etc, etc... by all means, do so... but you lose me everytime you say we need money. If you can't make the business case for it without subsidy or grants, IT SHOULD NOT BE DONE. Period. And those poor whiny souls who bellyache about the position we hold in broadband penetration can have endless bleeding ulcers over it, they have no point worth considering. As I've said before... lots of people here are

[WISPA] Post 4G technologies in Europe
Not really related to WISPs here in the US, but still interesting to those who are following 4G and post 4G wireless technologies http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090308121655.htm *** *** ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2009) — With much of the mobile world yet to migrate to 3G mobile communications, let alone 4G, European researchers are already working on a new technology able to deliver data wirelessly up to 12.5Gb/s. The technology – known as ‘millimetre (mm)-wave’ or microwave photonics – has commercial applications not just in telecommunications (access and in-house networks) but also in instrumentation, radar, security, radio astronomy and other fields. Despite the quantum leap in performance made possible by combining the latest radio and optics technologies to produce mm-wave components, it will probably only be a few years before there are real benefits for the average EU citizen. This is thanks to research and development work being done by the EU-funded project IPHOBAC, which brings together partners from both academia and industry with the aim of developing a new class of components and systems for mm-wave applications. The mm-wave band is the extremely high frequency part of the radio spectrum, from 30 to 300 gigahertz (GHz), and it gets it name from having a wavelength of one to 10mm. Until now, the band has been largely undeveloped, so the new technology makes available for exploitation more of the scarce and much-in-demand spectrum. New products from Europe IPHOBAC is not simply a ‘paper project’ where the technology is researched, but very much a practical exercise to develop and commercialise a new class of products with a ‘made in Europe’ label on them. While several companies in Japan and the USA have been working on merging optical and radio frequency technologies, IPHOBAC is the world’s first fully integrated effort in the field, with a lot of different companies involved. This has resulted in the three-year project, which runs until end-2009, already having an impressive list of achievements to its name. It recently unveiled a tiny component, a transmitter able to transmit a continuous signal not only through the entire mm-wave band but beyond. Its full range is 30 to 325GHz and even higher frequency operation is now under investigation. The first component worldwide able to deliver that range of performance, it will be used in both communications and radar systems. Other components developed by the project include 110GHz modulators, 110GHz photodetectors, 300GHz dual-mode lasers, 60GHz mode-locked lasers, and 60GHz transceivers. Truly disruptive technology Project coordinator Andreas Stöhr says millimetre-wave photonics is a truly disruptive technology for high frequency applications. “It offers unique capabilities such as ultra-wide tunability and low-phase noise which are not possible with competing technologies, such as electronics,” he says. What this will mean in practical terms is not only ultra-fast wireless data transfer over telecommunications networks, but also a whole range of new applications (http://www.iphobac-survey.org). One of these, a 60GHz Photonic Wireless System, was demonstrated at the ICT 2008 exhibition in Lyon and was voted into the Top Ten Best exhibits. The system allows wireless connectivity in full high definition (HD) between devices in the home, such as a set-top box, TV, PC, and mobile devices. It is the first home area network to demonstrate the speeds necessary for full wireless HD of up to 3Gb/s. The system can also be used to provide multi-camera coverage of live events in HD. “There is no time to compress the signal as the director needs to see live feed from every camera to decide which picture to use, and ours is the only technology which can deliver fast enough data rates to transmit uncompressed HD video/audio signals,” says Stöhr. The same technology has been demonstrated for access telecom networks and has delivered world record data rates of up to 12.5Gb/s over short- to medium-range wireless spans, or 1500 times the speed of upcoming 4G mobile networks. One way in which the technology can be deployed in the relatively short term, according to Stöhr, is wirelessly supporting very fast broadband to remote areas. “You can have your fibre in the ground delivering 10Gb/s but we can deliver this by air to remote areas where there is no fibre or to bridge gaps in fibre networks,” he says. Systems for outer space The project is also developing systems for space applications, working with the European Space Agency. Stöhr said he could not reveal details as this has not yet been made public, save to say the systems will operate in the 100GHz band and are needed immediately. There are various ongoing co-operation projects with industry to commercialise the

Re: [WISPA] ARTICLE - What's the U.S. Doing Wrong with Broadband ?
Thanks for the humor, Marlon! The romans infested my network last night. To make room for a new backhaul and some other stuff, we changed out our largest site last night - everything new and also containing all new IP's and routing. Unfortunately, I had accidently put a routing loop in the backhaul device, and when we hooked it up, we instantly buried the CPU with routing loops and it took me 2 hours to fix it remotely - mostly waiting for a totally buried CPU to respond to SSH input Then, just an hour or so later, the radio on the other end of the backhaul died. This after renumbering and re-routing about 100 clients. So, then, I had to find a way to revert everyone bak to the OLD provider All that was on the OLD hardware. I got done (gave up) after getting most of the clients working about 11 pm. Worked on it some more at home till around 1:00 am... The phone was ringing at 8:05, after I'd gotten about 5 hours of sleep... Ok, that's it. I'm ready for sleep again... insert witty tagline here - Original Message - From: Marlon K. Since you mentioned providers' numbers, are you using IP space from your upstream(s)? If you're big enough, the money you'll spend on an ARIN membership is well worth it, just to get your own IP space. Re: [WISPA] OT Number Porting Question
I have heard of a situation when a cable line can't be ported to Sprint or ATT because it has to be ported back to SBC or the telco first. I think this has to do with Digital from the Cable company. I wonder if this is the same situation? I don't believe that this really is the situation, but this is the story. Did you ask for a supervisor? Sometimes first line service people don't know everything and you need to ask for their supervisor to get an answer. However, numbers don't belong to carriers anymore, so they are wrong in that respect. My guess is they just don't know or don't want to explain that they can't do it. no, don't have my own space yet. The renumbering isn't normally too bad. I did that not long ago, to shuffle around some subnets and make space for more clients. Painlessly and nobody noticed. However, I have ONE access point that's legacy with clients back from my startup time and it has a number of non-dhcp clients on it. This WILL involve a lot of drive time, to get all them fixed. The access points themselves do all the routing and store the DHCP settings, so, it's just a matter of downloading the config, hand altering it, and uploading. Our ip's are assigned to MAC addresses and it's really not all that troublesome. I just use a word processor and and do a replace for the first 3 and hand assign the rest.Takes perhaps 10 minutes per AP. insert witty tagline here - Original Message - From: David E. If you have a router in front of them create a src nat and dst nat rule for them then you can take it easy or not bother do the truck roll and just do it if you want in the area of one of the clients. John, Sasha did not go on a rant per say but would make a disparaging remark with his other comments. When I mentioned that a good matrix to start for the prerequisites on getting an grant application submitted would be submittal of the 477 form he mentioned how all of that data is not very good anyway. And when the government was mentioning how we need to work within the government to get anywhere he mentioned how the government is not helpful in working together. By hand. But we're going to see if we can set up access to give us the right csv data. We'll have to add several new fields and create (like we did for the current silly form) speed classifications for many of our customers. The REALLY silly part for us? Most of our business customers buy the same type of account that our residential customers. Yet they (the fcc) think that there should be some quick and easy way for us to tell the difference based on something that we don't even keep track of. deep sigh marlon - Original Message - From: Randy Cosby dco...@infowest.com To: WISPA General List wireless@wispa.org Sent: Monday, March 16, 2009 2:00 PM Subject: Re: [WISPA] WAS: speaking of ARIN now 477 Did you guys end up creating a CSV file to upload, or do it by hand, by tract? Re: [WISPA] WAS: speaking of ARIN now 477
I did ours by hand. I had the customers in a spreadsheet, by address and speed. Then I had to go through the addresses to make sure that they were correct. Some of our customers bill to an address that is not their home address, so I had to change it. Then I sorted by Zip and went through with the PDF of the census tract, by hand and populated the census tract. The CSV looked even more complicated. Most of my users are in Quickbooks and although we also have an Access database for our technical info, there were new fields to add. Wasn't sure how to add these new fields and make sure it was right. Re: [WISPA] speaking of ARIN
I agree, but did you check the data? PO Boxes don't convert. It just left them blank. I had one area where 50% of the addresses came back in the wrong county. I don't think that was Brian's fault at all, but the lookup engine just missed. Some others where we had to massage the data to get the format because the tracts with decimal did not all get formatted right when we imported the data. Overall a huge thanks to Brian!!! But even with that it took us probably a total of 30 hours for about 1500 clients. The 5 hours was about right for a group of about 300 clients. Cliff Olle wrote: With the information that Brian Webster generated for us, we did the filing in 5 minutes. Re: [WISPA] WAS: speaking of ARIN now 477
I think it took me about four hours to do my 33 households. (to complete entire 477) This was converting six zip codes into seven census tracts, so I still don't see much advantage to the switch. So the census tracts might change in 2012? Dang! So should we be saving the LAT/LON of the customer location, or something, to make it easier to re-code them in the future? I think the government owes us a free way to geo-code addresses in bulk. At least I don't need Excel anymore. On Mar 16, 2009, at 4:55 PM, David E. Smith wrote: At least next time around it'll be less painful. (We're retaining the customer-census associations, so we'll only have to manually map our new customers. Re: [WISPA] Alvarion B100 Throughput
Depends on the frequency. 3-9 miles links we've seen 55-60Mbps on a 40MHz channel w/5.4GHz. However, because the radio has to change frequencies due to DFS, it's not consistent. Since you mentioned providers' numbers, are you using IP space from your upstream(s)? If you're big enough, the money you'll spend on an ARIN membership is well worth it, just to get your own IP space. You'll hopefully never have to renumber again, and that peace-of-mind is well worth the money. David Smith MVN.net WISPA Wants You! Re: [WISPA] Today's meetings
I need to retract a comment that I made unclearly. What we do know is we have a lot of work todo, to fight individuals advocating for states. I did not mean that we should fight states. I think it is important that we continue to work with our States, to improve our communication, and discuss the roles that are best for each of us. It was mandated by congress that NTIA consults States, and it is just common sense for us to coordinate with States who may already have put in lot of time and resources determining the needs of their State. What I meant by the above quote was that, there were some comment made at the NTIA public meeting today thst were not ISP/WISP friendly. We need to fight the comments made by those advocates. They did NOT promote fair working relationships between local ISPs and the States. The comments were very Anti-ISP, and State advocates were highly in favor of States having full control of Grant proceeds, apposed to private sector ISPs being eligible. We had to remind them that Congress also mandated that ISPs be eligible, if they could prove public interest good. The first half of the panel discussion was on what constituted public interest good.
