[WISPA] OT, help with ip addresses

2010-01-04 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
Hi All,

I'm very close to putting my two networks together and will be able to run
BGP.

We're also in need of some more IP addys.

Can anyone there help me get through the process of picking up my own IP
space? I've never done that and am now ready to give it a shot.

A paid consultant would be fine.

Thanks,
marlon

It's relatively simple, as such things go. Basically, you go to ARIN and
give them some money. :)

You'll need a plan for renumbering your networks (so that your existing
space, which presumably comes from upstream ISPs, can be returned to them),
and you'll need to be sure your upstreams will talk BGP with you. Otherwise,
it's a bit of paperwork and a bit of cash.

Re: [WISPA] OT, help with ip addresses

2010-01-04 Thread Bret Clark
I assume you already have your ASN#? Also if you upstream provider has
provided at a minimum /24 block to you, (even if it is their block), you
can still advertise it via BGP. You'll just need their permission to do
so, that way you don't need to renumber immediately while still gaining
the benefits of have BGP running between upstream providers.

Ideally you want your own IP block since it allows more flexibility in
moving between upstream providers without the need to renumber. And as
David pointed out, the process of getting the block is fairly straight
forward.

Depends on the exact route, but a significant number of those long haul
routes are actually full (either technically full or competitively locked
up), both domestic and international. Several more cables have been planned
and some are completed. Submarine cables are usually owned by several
telecoms.

http://cable.tmcnet.com/topics/cable/articles/52580-trans-pacific-capacity-possible-new-price-war.htm

TPE (Verizon, etc.) completed
Unity (Google, etc.) 1Q2010 completion
AAG (AT&T, etc.) completed

Allied Fiber is currently constructing Chicago - New York - Ashburn, with
"plans" to do a ring around the entire country.

http://dark-fiber.tmcnet.com/topics/dark-fiber/articles/71849-dark-fiber-report-big-stuff-ahead-allied-fiber.htm

Also note in there that AT&T and Verizon have commited a combined $35B to
build out fiber to the tower.

I'd have to say "C". I don't see much change in the marketplace. I am
optimistic now as I always have been. The WISP market is as good today
as it has always been. I DO think there is room for improvement, but I
don't think our opportunities are better (or worse) than they've ever
been.

The market itself is becoming more aware of fixed wireless so it's an easier
sell however the equipment costs and ease of operation are now to the point
where anyone can purchase, install and blast 2.4ghz at full power in all
directions. I see the lowered cost of equipment as a good thing as far as
ROI however I'm seeing private individuals with the newer stuff and using it
with total disregard to FCC regulations. As if the 2.4 spectrum wasn't a
mess already these novice users are going to wipe out what was left of it
and will migrate to the 5ghz as well. I think the next year will see more
and more of these baby-wispers doing their own PTP, causing us lots of
trouble. In a few years I see running a licensed operation as the only way
to avoid most of the mess.

Re: [WISPA] 2010: One Question for WISPs

2010-01-04 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
LOL

What kind of question is that? big grin

The short answer is, it depends.

I'm much more excited about the technology in use. I'm much more excited
about how many customers we can take care of with the same amount of staff
etc. Technologically life is better than ever.

I'm not excited about usage. This netflix thing is looking like it'll have
a bigger impact than Napster had in the past. With the new usage there is
NO incentive for the customer to purchase new faster services like there was
when we went from dialup to broadband.

My bill for upstream went up by nearly 10% last month alone! This based on
the 95% usage mechanism we're billed for. It's up by almost twice over the
last 12 months. This in spite of a 50% DROP in per mb/s costs from that
particular provider.

Unless costs go WAY down or we find a way to bill the content providers for
the traffic that's being generated I'm not sure what will happen over the
next 3 to 5 years. Per bit billing only works if everyone (or nearly
everyone) does it.

Xbox is also a problem these days. No other gaming system out there is as
picky with the network design or performance. Not even close. Xbox
requires very nearly perfect connections between the gamers or there are
significant lag issues that drive the gamers nuts.

I don't see any trend in the content providers giving a rats behind about
what their crappy encryption mechanisms etc. do to the transport people. I
don't see any improvements on the horizon.

On a good note though, this has to be just KILLING the big players. At
least we have a somewhat captive audience, often a forgiving and tech savvy
one at that. People who "just don't get it" don't often last long in the
sticks, they have to be able to hire help for everything they need so they
end up in the cities :-).

If we last the next 5 years I think we'll be in good shape. But for the
first time since I've been in business I'm worried about the business
models. I just can't find one that works for us and the customer.

laters,
marlon

2010-01-04 Thread MDK
I'm seeing the same thing.

I can literally track it month to month and show the bill and useage going
up each month by far more than the growth of our customer base.

In 3 months I've added 25% to my useage.

KA-POW! That's one serious bunch of data useage.

2010-01-04 Thread Patrick Leary
Things like Netflix do pose an interesting challenge to ISPs and I'm not
sure how best it gets addressed. Too bad users don't accept metered use
of their broadband like they do their cell phone use.

Personally, I killed my Netflix now that I can get movies for a buck at
dozens of Redbox kiosks outside local grocery and drug stores. I suppose
if I lived in a rural place though, it'd still be a customer.

LOL

What kind of question is that? big grin

The short answer is, it depends.

I'm much more excited about the technology in use. I'm much more
excited about how many customers we can take care of with the same
amount of staff etc. Technologically life is better than ever.

I'm not excited about usage. This netflix thing is looking like it'll
have a bigger impact than Napster had in the past. With the new usage
there is NO incentive for the customer to purchase new faster services
like there was when we went from dialup to broadband.

My bill for upstream went up by nearly 10% last month alone! This based
on the 95% usage mechanism we're billed for. It's up by almost twice
over the last 12 months. This in spite of a 50% DROP in per mb/s costs
from that particular provider.

Unless costs go WAY down or we find a way to bill the content providers
for the traffic that's being generated I'm not sure what will happen
over the next 3 to 5 years. Per bit billing only works if everyone (or
nearly
everyone) does it.

Xbox is also a problem these days. No other gaming system out there is
as picky with the network design or performance. Not even close. Xbox
requires very nearly perfect connections between the gamers or there are
significant lag issues that drive the gamers nuts.

I don't see any trend in the content providers giving a rats behind
about what their crappy encryption mechanisms etc. do to the transport
people. I don't see any improvements on the horizon.

On a good note though, this has to be just KILLING the big players. At
least we have a somewhat captive audience, often a forgiving and tech
savvy one at that. People who "just don't get it" don't often last long
in the sticks, they have to be able to hire help for everything they
need so they end up in the cities :-).

If we last the next 5 years I think we'll be in good shape. But for the
first time since I've been in business I'm worried about the business
models. I just can't find one that works for us and the customer.

laters,
marlon

Sprint, at least, offers an "unlimited everything" plan. Does exactly what
it sounds like - unlimited voice, data, roaming (except internationally).

Cell phone usage is easier to meter, at least for voice, because we all know
more-or-less how long "one minute" is in terms of talking. We all have a
decent sense of how time works, at least well enough that billing by the
minute is fairly intuitive to consumers.

Bandwidth is a much more fuzzy thing. I couldn't tell you how much bandwidth
it takes to stream a seven-minute YouTube clip, and I work in this field; a
typical non-IT home user will be even more lost.

If you want to sell by the bit, you also need to do a really good job of
educating users so they know what they'll get, and you have to keep these
things up-to-date. For instance, ten years ago, I used "one minute of MP3
audio is about 1MB," and at the time that was accurate. Today, most folks
encode their audio at higher bit rates, and many people buy from the iTunes
Store; it's probably closer to 2MB per minutes now, based on an informal
sample of my music library. And this doesn't even account for things like
online radio stations, streaming video (both YouTube-grade and
Netflix-grade), online gaming (what's the rate of bits-per-bullet?) and any
of a few hundred other things.

(Anyone who suggests Web sites need interstitial labels - "this Web site may
take up to 4MB of bandwidth to load, do you wish to continue" - gets socked
in the jaw.)

Re: [WISPA] 2010: One Question for WISPs

2010-01-04 Thread Tom DeReggi
For 2010, " the short term", I am much more optimistic.

Demand is as strong as ever. Technology is evolving, to enable us to better
compete. Every day,WISPs are 1 day closer to profitabilty than the day
before.

But there is also a down side. I'm less optimistic on the "long term".
Customer perception and demand for faster speeds for less money is growing,
and commodity providers (RBOCs/Cable Cos) are starting to work further in to
WISP served territories, to put on the competitive pressure.
WISPs are less certain about longevity of the market, and will be looking
for quicker ROI, to reduce RISK.

WISPs will do well in 2010 because they are adding custoemrs faster than
they are loosing them, and better possitoned to do so. But, the bad news is
they are also loosing customers to competition.
This has the potential to harm hardware purchases, because when WISPs loose
customers, they often relocate the gear they already own.
Manufacturers that increase sales most will be the ones that are offering
new products with enough new value (capacity) to justify the replacement of
gear already live in place.

WISPs will be more concience about excellerating ROI and less interested in
long term investment.

There is no doubt 2010 will be better than 2009. But what about 2012 & 2013?

Re: [WISPA] Wimax gear

2010-01-04 Thread Wallace Walcher
Having built my WISP from scratch with my own resources and currently being
debt free in my operations, I often wonder who the people are who so quickly
classify Mikrotik and Ubiquity gear as trash. I am making a very good
living deploying such "trash".

My perception is they are either people who are not spending their own money
- they are working for the investor, or possibly borrowing or leasing the
equipment, or they are a vendor promoting their own high margin goods.
Those that are WISPs seem to have the perception that it is better to
install higher cost equipment, no matter what the cost, if it will provide
them an expected reduction in support costs.

What I have found in my area is that people who deploy such equipment have a
very hard go of it, mainly because the replacement costs during the storm
season eat their lunch. My operational plan is different than some - I
focus on residential customers on the outskirts of town that do not have
access to Cable and DSL. Those focusing on business accounts in cities
would understandably have a different perspective. But I feel very
fortunate to have a sub $200 total CPE cost (sometimes sub $100) with the
Mikrotik-type solution.

Weird. Ours is completely the opposite. We keep adding customers by the
truck load, but bandwidth only slowly climbs.

*knock on wood* Never said I minded, though!

What's your average speed tier? Maybe it's more noticeable by those who
offer slower speeds sue to lack of affordable bandwidth? Just a guess.

Yes, I know, bandwidth is bandwidth but someone who is married to their
network trying to squeeze each kb out of it will be more sensitive to upward
swings in the usage as opposed to someone who is more endowed in the
bandwidth area.

Visuals unintended but it happened and seems to make sense..

That might be where you're seeing the issue.

What is the typical max throughput both up and down of your AP?
How many customers do you typically have per AP?

All users get limited at 12Mbps. Most are capable of 8-10ish.

[WISPA] Greenup IL

2010-01-04 Thread Blake Bowers
Got a business customer needing wireless internet service in Greenup IL,
at a tower site. (meaning if you are in an adjoining area, a link
could be possible at a decent elevation) up to a T1.

They don't really need a full T-1, It is basically two VoIP paths
and possibly a weather station, but they are "comfortable" with
a T-1.

They will need static IP.

Of course, after providing service to the customer - one might find it
interesting to provide wireless service to the town - LOS to most houses
in town, as well as downtown businesses, etc. I am sure the tower
owner, a heck of a nice guy in fact, would be willing to work something
out.

The business customer needs service ASAP.

Don't take your organs to heaven,
heaven knows we need them down here!

Re: [WISPA] Tower Lease Agreement

2010-01-04 Thread Travis Johnson
Hi,

We tried to use the same contract that we got from a tower owner that
uses it with Verizon, AT&T and Nextel for a city water tower we wanted
on. They had issues with several of the items, and it took 2 months to
get all the details worked out (with their attorney no less).

Oh boy... here we go...

Just a few weeks ago we tried to track down Jayson on the Motorola
mailing list (because several people had issues of knowing where his
expertise and experience was coming from). We have never been able to
get an idea of how many subs, his real website, company name or any
other information about him or the companies he works or consults for.
And when asked, all he says is "why does it matter?".

Re: [WISPA] Was question: now bandwidth use.

2010-01-04 Thread Jayson Baker
I don't think I ever got a response to my question though... what *does* it
matter?

We were the first broadband ISP in our area in 2001. We were one of the
first ISPs to use (5.7) Canopy. One of the very first to deploy 2.4GHz.
One of the very first to deploy 900MHz. We saw the writing on the wall in
2005--Canopy was starting to fall behind in speed compared to it's cost per
unit. We sold the network. I consulted for 4 years, did software
development, setup a WISP in Costa Rica. Last year we started offering
service again, and are again growing very quickly.

Less than 30 seconds on Google and I came up with this: peakinter.net
