Re: [WISPA] Times Microwave tools for LMR 400...

2010-05-18 Thread Scott Reed
I have tools from Tessco. I love the EZ connectors. Good positive snap
when seated properly.
I use a hacksaw to cut the cable. No smashing and with a little care a
right angle cut is not hard.
The saw does require some deburring. I use the tool, but a file will work.
The one think you don't have listed is a pair of scissors. Makes
trimming the braid much easier.

You need an ST-600EZ for the LMR600. The tooling for 400 and 600 are
different.

 EZ-400-NMH-D Connector
 CCT-01 Tool (cutter)
 ST-400EZ tool (cable Prep tool)
 DBT-U (deburr tool)
 HX4 Tool (crimp tool)

 Separately or in a kit...

Does anyone have a favorite Vendor? I saw one vendor selling a kit for
LMR400/600 with all of the above parts. They wanted over $1000 for it!

The 'EZ-Crimp connectors look like the way to go, but other advice is
 appreciated.

Is it? When something like Ubiquiti can be had for $79, with no learning
curve, and standardization could be accomplished? Relief aid is mission
critical, and supporting and access equipment can be tough.
I've observed donated junk gear gets left behind. However, I'd agree, it
might be a nice gesture to ask those giving aid if they could use it, just
in case.

However, I argue there are few items that are not atleast worth their weitht
in shipping. Many Liquidators would accept donated equipment. And EBAY has
proven, that just about anything can be sold for a profit. One mans's trash
is another man's product in short supply.

If anyone has any type of gear operating in 5.x or 900, that they feel is
best destined for the landfills, they can just ship it to me instead, I'll
accept it at no charge, and then they can save on Dump Fees and gas, and
contribute to saving the environment at the same time :-)

any online classifieds for used WISP equipment? I'm looking for a licensed

I've got stuff you can't find on Ebay. Last time I checked it hadn't sold for
enough to be worth my while to photograph and list it. (Old dialup equipment)

As far as classifieds, my input is to have something like the craigslist system,
but also have a list we can subscribe to so that by email we can receive a
summary of
new posts each day. I really don't mind the occassional post to the list of
used items for sale, as it's often useful. However, I can see the value in
having
something made for the purpose.

There are electronics recyclers who accept scrap then break it down for
the metal content. You just need to find one in your area. In our area,
there are many such businesses.

Re: [WISPA] Times Microwave tools for LMR 400...

2010-05-18 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
We use Hutton for this. Though I think all of the old EC folks are now
gone

Anyway, all I have is the stripper, deburring tool, an Ideal crimper, razor
knife and toe nail clippers. The Times crimper is REALLY expensive.

I use the EZ connectors. Only way to fly.

For LMR 600 I either buy pre-built cables (don't use it much) or I buy the
new Times crimpless connectors. You just need a couple of wrenches to screw
them together. They grip MUCH better than the old ones too.

Hmmm, time to update these pics. I don't see the stripper or the deburring
tool listed. You get the basic idea though.

[WISPA] Tools for an easy/safe day. Was -- Re: Times Microwave tools for LMR 400...

2010-05-18 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
I'd never got back to the crimp or solder cheapo connectors. It's just too
critical of a component. All it has to do is loosen up due to temp changes
and you'll fight strange performance issues forever!

At the very lease solder them vs. crimping the center pin. At least that
creates a positive connection.

If you use the EZ connectors it's important to have the lip on the center
pin cleaned up. Otherwise you don't get a good connection. I can see where
a file would work just fine, but I don't have time to fiddle with that kind
of thing. It takes me just a few minutes to make a PERFECT connection
nowadays.

It's like the cat5 we do. I ONLY use the EZ connectors and crimper now.
Yeah the tool and crimps are expensive, but my time is even more valuable.
http://www.google.com/products?hl=enresnum=0q=EZ+rj45um=1ie=UTF-8ei=oazyS4XZA4GuswOinMj_Cwsa=Xoi=product_result_groupct=titleresnum=3ved=0CDsQrQQwAg

I buy Bosch, Dewalt, or Milwakee drills. I don't often use screw drivers
anymore, I use electric drivers (high speed Bosch 12vdc unit) etc.

I've got a LARGE bucket truck. I replace my ladders every couple of years
(4 at most). I put on good tires and brakes. I hire help if I get too busy
or the job is too dangerous.

I'm tired of working so hard. I'm too old (45) to take crazy chances. It's
time to get the company paid off and start putting kids through college.
Soon we'll be able to put money in the bank for later. As things sit right
now we'll have nearly everything (not the house or cars) paid off in about 5
years. Never know, we may decide to expand or buy someone out and screw
that up, but as of now the future is looking very bright!

We're up to just under 700 subs now. 7500+ square miles. 30+ tower
sites. I have 1.2 people in the office, the wife spends 6 or 7 hours a week
paying bills (home ones included) and I work 6 to 12 hours per day (more
toward 12 :-). Once in a while I hire some help in the field as stated
above.

Our gross revenue will hit around $350,000 this year. All with basically
2.5 people. Not too many companies can accomplish that. Especially in
areas as sparsely populated as we are.

Efficiency and safety are very high on my list for what I do and the tools I
use.

laters,
marlon

 EZ-400-NMH-D Connector
 CCT-01 Tool (cutter)
 ST-400EZ tool (cable Prep tool)
 DBT-U (deburr tool)
 HX4 Tool (crimp tool)

Does anyone have a favorite Vendor? I saw one vendor selling a kit for

The 'EZ-Crimp connectors look like the way to go, but other advice is

Peter from Freeside here Thank you to my friends and customers who
responded earlier.

Okay - I know... no commercial posts, which is why I haven't responded to
the thread, but I saw Cameron's post this morning and thought I would jump
in really quick with a couple of comments...

The dig about the install being a trophy was probably deserved. :) I've
improved the docs over the last month. Hopefully it no longer earns you a
trophy. :)

We have a Vmware image available on the demo page - super easy for
evaluation.

Billing is complicated, and while the configuration page has a note about
each option, config can be a bear. We can help with that, ping me off list.

Docs are sparse - Would it help to beg the opens source community to help
with docs? I will. Please... :) We spend a full day on support
customers and new features. The docs end up low on the list. Matt nailed
it on the head.

Again for more info ping me off of the list.

 Hi Paul,

Freeside is supposedly set up very well to do VOIP rating and billing.
There are several very large VOIP operations that use it for their
billing right now, and although I have not set it up, all of the
facilities are there to tie it in.

As far as documentation, yeah, it is very sparse. I don't think that
it is necessarily to get people to pay for support, I think it is more
like they don't have people on staff to write documentation. They
basically do support and write code. The wiki has gotten better, but
it is still a far cry from being comprehensive. If you have access to
some linux/perl/sql people, you can probably get it installed.

I actually got Freeside installed and running on a machine back in
2002. I think it took me a full week of messing around to get it
installed. When I finally did get it running, I messed around with it
for a month, and then took the hard drive out of the machine and put it
on a shelf.I think it is still around here somewhere. It is a
trophy - like the first time I solved a Rubiks Cube and I put it on the
shelf for a month afterward. While I am sure that my sysadmin and I
could get it installed and running, we leave that to the Freeside
support crew because they can do it easier and know how to fix most of
 the issues that come up.

Freeside is kind of like the billing version of Mikrotik. It is
complicated and has a relatively steep learning curve, but there is good
available commercial support for it, and because it is open source it
can be modified to do just about anything.

get you to pay for support.

 Many thanks,

We use Freeside with integrated RT Ticket System. The next upgrade of
Freeside (we are planning on implementing it next month) is also
supposed to include a calendar that is tied to RT.

This has worked very well for us, although Freeside has a few wonks that
have to be dealt with on occasion.

All of this software is open source, so you don't pay for the licensing,
but you will probably have to pay someone for support unless you have
access to some Linux/SQL/perl gurus. If you do have access to some
coding talent, it is easy to add more functionality and features to
Freeside. We have added business reporting dashboards, bandwidth
control exports, integration with Xymon for customer monitoring and
integration with Asterisk to do robo-calls to customers who are late
paying their bills or have gone off line and may need technical
support. That kind of stuff isn't happening with Powercode.

[WISPA] Ubiquiti List

WISPA ANNOUNCES NEW UBIQUITI LIST

WISPA is happy to announce a new user list in conjunction with the
popular Ubiquiti Wireless product line. The Board of WISPA monitors the
members and general lists and based on the traffic generated by Ubiquiti
products feels it should have it's own discussion list. As not all
members use this product we have to weigh their comments of too much
discussion on specific topics so the members and general lists can be
used for shorter thread subjects. Ubiquiti's senior technician Michael
Ford will be monitoring this list and, we are pleased they have chosen
to be an active member on this list considering their own forum at
ubnt.com http://ubnt.com.

To sign up for the Ubiquiti list you can go to:
http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/ubnt_users. Participation is
not limited to members and it's hoped that non-members in the General
list will consider this another benefit brought by WISPA in
consideration of having you join this organization. All we ask is that
you follow the etiquette rules for lists under WISPA supervision.
Several other vendor members who generate large discussions have their
own lists and you can see those at our main web site wispa.org
http://wispa.org.

We look forward to having your participation in discussion to help your
technical needs and suggestions for potential improvements to this
already fine product.

Subject: [WISPA] Times Microwave tools for LMR 400...

I am looking for the following:
 EZ-400-NMH-D Connector
 CCT-01 Tool (cutter)
 ST-400EZ tool (cable Prep tool)
 DBT-U (deburr tool)
 HX4 Tool (crimp tool)

 Separately or in a kit...

Does anyone have a favorite Vendor? I saw one vendor selling a kit for
LMR400/600 with all of the above parts. They wanted over $1000 for it!

The 'EZ-Crimp connectors look like the way to go, but other advice is
 appreciated.
