[WISPA] Lightening protection

2010-07-27 Thread Jeremie Chism
I had two cpe's get struck by lightening yesterday that took out the
cpe, the router behind it and the voip adapter behind that. Along with
a few Ethernet cards also. What are you using on the customers end to
try to stop this. The cpe is powered by poe.

I had a problem customer than was always getting CPE Ethernet knocked out.
Switched to shielded CAT5 with a pac wireless POE adapter that grounds the
jacket through the 3rd prong ground of the house plug and problem went away.
Also it helps if the pole the the CPE is mounted to is grounded as well. If
its on a roof you may have to run a ground wire to the pole to dissipate
static.

Re: [WISPA] Lightening protection

2010-07-27 Thread Mark Dueck
I've been wanting to ask this question for a few days.

We got hit on one of our NOCs with about 6 radios on the tower. Every
single radio was fried. Our problem I think is that it's a limestone
(caliche or white marl) hill. How well can you ground in a situation
like that? Or does it not matter? We had all our POE's properly
grounded, but did not run separate ground from the radios as they were
all Tranzeo with metal back plate, metal mount, mounted directly on the
legs of the tower. The tower has a grounding rod at the bottom, but it
goes directly into the limestone.

Any suggestions?

Re: [WISPA] Lightening protection

2010-07-27 Thread Mike
Many times a mesh, or series of radials radiating from the tower will help.
Also, sufficiently deep ground wells can be dug and bronze rods driven.
Calcium chloride in and around the ground rods/wells will also increase soil
conductivity. Make sure you don't have any ground loops in the system, or
grounding tied to different points that create a potential.

Thanks... I think the ccop will be friendly enough, where they have
poles. I've tried to locate nodes along pole routes when
possible. Some back roads don't have poles, though, so we may need
to put up our own.

Most antenna mounts want to be on a 1-3 inch metal pole. What
hardware do you use to attach to the wood pole? And do you ever put
antennas above the primaries, on a nonconductive mount, or do you
always stay down in the safe zone? Thanks...

I am guessing what he meant is they put the wireless gear on a
seperate pole from the electrical. Being electric COOP its likely
easy for them to drop poles in just for it. If you colocate on actual
electric poles you must be so many feet below the high voltage lines.
I think you must be certified for your person to come within so many
feet of the high voltage as well. AFAIK.

Re: [WISPA] Lightening protection

2010-07-27 Thread Greg Ihnen
Where I'm from the telco and cable co bring their service to the customer's
house and then they continue down (or up if it's underground) the outside of
the exterior wall down to a few feet above ground, and then put their grounding
block or protector on the wall and run a ground wire down to a ground rod. From
there the service continues on into the customer's house. Maybe that would be a
good way to do it.

Re: [WISPA] Lightening protection

I know in some difficult to ground regions instead of ground rods they use a
grounding system laid in the cement foundation and ground floor of new
construction. It's reportedly very effective even in arid locations because the
cement tends to store and release water keeping the surrounding ground moist.
The system has a name but it escapes me.

[WISPA] Renegotiating Tower Leases

2010-07-27 Thread Chuck Hogg
We are in the midst of purchasing a company, and they have quite a few
Crown leases. We want to renegotiate those leases to add additional
antennas. Unfortunately, these guys are paying $2/ft/antenna so some of
them are extremely expensive with 5 antennas at 150'+. Have any of you
gone thru the process of renegotiating the tower leases? The terms
don't end for a few more years unfortunately.

This is the small one, there is a larger one, both have auto ping for off

Also, put a old CB-3 into the surge side of a battery backup and your

how long the batteries will last.

Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting

2010-07-27 Thread Brad Belton
Butch Evans put together a MikroTik script for us that monitors our APC
UPSs. Sends us an email when power is lost along with battery time
remaining. Then sends us an email again once power is restored and again
updates the remaining battery life. Works well, but unfortunately the
RB493AH doesn't have a USB port for the standard included APC USB
cable...for that matter very few multi-interface RouterBoards have USB
ports. Most of our HUB sites are x86 based routers, so it hasn't been a
huge deal for us, but having the ability to monitor the UPS via the MikroTik
router is very handy.

We have many of the Digital Loggers eight port rack mount remote power
switches. We've been seeing a higher failure rate out of them than we like
to see. Basically they just become "deaf" or non-responsive via their
Ethernet port...even after a hard reset they are toast. Anyone else seeing
similar results from the Digital Logger rack mount 8 port? They're a great
value at $200-$300, but not if we keep seeing failures...

Best,

Brad

Ouch...is that measure or unmeasured? Measured around NH is about
$10-$12 minus the slush fund and bogus add on fees. I think last time I
checked total was about $15-$20 including fees.

Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting

2010-07-27 Thread Cameron Crum
Brad,
I found out what causes this. There is a small battery inside that
loses its ability to keep a charge. Once this happens, the thing goes
back to defaults at every reboot. You can get a replacement at
batteries plus. It looks like a double a, but is some li variant.

Re: [WISPA] Lightening protection

2010-07-27 Thread Philip Dorr
Isn't that how towers are supposed to be grounded? Three ground rods
one at each leg, 3+ feet away, hooked together in a loop and attached
to each leg of the tower. When you have guy wires are't you supposed
to do the same between them?

[WISPA] Overheating UPS?

2010-07-27 Thread Forbes Mercy
One of my UPS's at a house/tower was chirping, I sent a technician to
pull the unit in for testing. It was so hot that they had to wrap it in
towels to move it, it wasn't chirping when he got there. It has a
minimum load of about 3-4 amps for a couple Mikrotik and Motorola radios
on it with a switch and remote reboot unit. The UPS was in an attic of
the house and it is averaging about 95 degrees (we don't have humidity
here) outside so I figure over 100 in the attic. I'll let it cool down
overnight in the office but my guess is the chirping was a high temp
warning, any ideas?

SmartAPC Model SUA 750 - about a year old.

Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting

2010-07-27 Thread Kristian Hoffmann
We've had almost as many dispatches to fix/replace broken DLI web power
switches as we have saved dispatches from being able to remotely reboot
devices. At this point, we have half a dozen on the shelf that I'm
reluctant to send out in the field.

On the other hand, we have some older units (pre autoping) that have
been running for 2-3 years in hot nasty environments. I wish we could
figure out what was causing the failures because, in theory, they're
good units and reasonably priced.

Re: [WISPA] IPPay

2010-07-27 Thread Robert West
They do a PERSONAL credit check instead of a CORPORATE credit c heck in
order to make their decision to accept your company as a client. And that
is okay how?

Just found that out after trying to get them as a processor. And still I
was snookered. I'm sure they do a great job and are well worth the fees but
I am a full blow C Corp for a reason and I REALLY take issue with being lied
to by them for their data collection. Thanks guys, (IP Pay) you just opened
me up to potential personal liability. Nice. That's why I refused the
info in the first place.

I'm so happy

We converted to IP Pay almost 2 years ago and it was very smooth and we have
had no problems since then. As we continue to buy companies, we have
continued to transition them into IP Pay as well with great success.

Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting

2010-07-27 Thread Brad Belton
Cameron - Nick,

No kidding, an internal battery will render the unit unreachable even after
a hard factory reset? Good to know. I guess I'll order a couple more
replacements, so I can then crack open the ones that have become doorstops
and check them out.

Thanks,

Brad

We saw the same issue. Had to replace the internal battery on about ten
of them after 3-4 years of deployment. Been fine ever since.

Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting

2010-07-27 Thread Cameron Crum
I stumbled upon it by accident. I'm not sure why I decided to take one
apart, but I saw the little battery in there and thought "hmmm". So I got a
new one and it got its memory back...well at least after a reprogramming. I
guess its like a cmos battery. Lose it and you have to go reset all your
settings on the MB. I'm not sure why they haven't gone to flash memory on
these things.

It is getting ready to fail.I have had two APCs that got hot and
failed soon after. One made for an awful stink in the NOC when it
finally went. I thought the building was on fire.
