Adaptive modulation is the subject of an FCC NPRM WT Docket 10-153. Can you

Re: [WISPA] Hotel Redirect

2011-01-07 Thread Nick Olsen
Blake, This worked perfect. Anything using dst-nat was un-reliable as the
browser would cache the page, So even since they were past the redirect
part, The local machine would still load the same page for whatever site
the person requested originally. However, using web-proxy it redirects the
request perfectly.

I appreciate all the help I got on this one. Thanks to everyone.

How about this?

/ip firewall nat
add chain=dstnat in-interface=ether2 protocol=tcp dst-port=80 action=accept
src-address-list=proxy-bypass
add chain=dstnat in-interface=ether2 protocol=tcp dst-port=80
action=add-src-to-address-list address-list=proxy-bypass
address-list-timeout=1d
add chain=dstnat in-interface=ether2 protocol=tcp dst-port=80
action=redirect to-ports=8080

/ip proxy
set enabled=yes port=8080

/ip proxy access
add dst-port=80 action=allow dst-host=www.hotel.tld
add dst-port=80 action=deny redirect-to=www.hotel.tld

If you're not using proxy for anything else then it works great. Although,
it does not allow them to simply reload the page to reach the URL they
initially intended. The user would have to issue a totally new request to
see the content they desire.

Could you do something crazy like put their site in an iframe? Have the

Yes, this fails if they disable JavaScript, but it's a reasonable price

buying a WISP in eastern MO south of STL contact me off-list

Re: [WISPA] 11Ghz Licensing Warning Question

2011-01-07 Thread Tom DeReggi
On a License application, one must state the modulation that they will use or
state that they will use adaptive modulation.
Legally one is supposed to configure their equipment for what was approved. And
there are reasons for that, regarding the freq Coordination.

For example

If in QAM 256, one must have a lower noise floor and a higher signal to acheive
reliabilty.
For example... a link might state to operate at -35 and as low as -64 in rain
fade, and maintain a SNR of 30db, so no one else can generate over a -94 noise
floor, or they would interfere.

If in QPSK, one might say they can operate at a sensitivity as low as -90. and
only need 10db of SNR. That would mean either that
Others could deploy if they did not generate more than -100 noise floor, or
that if the Primary link operated at -35, as low as -64 in rain fade and
maintain SNR of 10db, that the someone else could deploy without causing
interference if theey did not generate a noise floor over -75.

Either way, there is a big difference between -75 and -100 and -94. What level
can a new license holder broadcast at, if the specs of other license holders
are not consistent? If a licensee was able to put there gear on any
modulations, it would require others new licensees to plan for worst case, and
not generate noise higher than -100, limiting them. Thus it would only be fair
if the provider actually used Adaptive modulation.

The question them come ups, if one states adaptive modulation, but then does
not use it, what harm is there and who would know ? After all it could allow
the provider to also lower there transmit in non-rain cases. If someone states
256QAM, and does Adaptive modulation anyway, isn't it just giving risk to the
one that stated incorrectly?

So yes, I support allowing flexibilty in setting adaptive modulation or not,
after the fact. The original license holder should be able to maintain
flexibilty.

We'll see.

There is a risk. Acquirers drop products all the time, even if
they're selling. Qualcomm's primary product is CMRS chips, sold
through equipmenet makers to the licensed carriers. They own most of
CDMA patents and a good enough piece of LTE to get a piece of all of
the action. WISPs are potential competitors. So they might just
want to adapt the Atheros designs to add the built-in hotspot (low
power WLAN) capability to their cell phone chipsets, and screw the
good stuff that WISPs use.

Believe me, I understand speed tests, and sure, I do speed tests of 30+Mbps
all the time. But that’s the point. The speedmaters.org website is proposing
that the “The U.S. ranks 25th in the world in average Internet connection
speeds.” Is this statement based upon these test servers?

Hi Rick.

I'm not sure what might be causing the lower reported speed in your case.
We regularly have tests that come through as 100Mbps or more (mostly from
research institutions). Your distance from the testing server could be a
factor. We use the same technology as speedtest.net, but fewer servers due
to cost constraints. You might try their site to see if you get a different
result.

Beth,

I ran my speed test directly from my fiber connection which is set for
40Mbps and the highest speed I can get I 5Mbps. It appears your tests are
highly inaccurate. What’s the deal?

I bet they contracted with non-union workers to do the study. Anyone wanna
 take that bet?

It is a Communication Workers of America initiative.

 Ernie,

Who’s in charge of all this? The reports are flawed. I'm sitting on a fiber
connection with up to 40Mbps with about 3Mbps currently being utilized and
their best speed test only gives me 5Mbps!
