[WISPA] How to control your mikrotik zombies ;)
Hi all I need to do update some parameters into the customer CPEs and it would be boring to do it for hundreds of them. Therefore I was wondering what is the best way to write a script to tell to a linux box to log into the cpe and do the following: 1) read some firewall parameters 2) add some firewall parameters 3) check the configuration etc I have the IPs and passwords, I jut find it boring to do it by hand. About the API, the CPEs are different versions of mikrotik so I don't know if it's a good idea to start thinking about the API. Any example Thank you in advance -- Ing. I have used expect and telnet. Butch Evans has some scripts for doing something similar. Re: [WISPA] How to control your mikrotik zombies ;)
If the versions of mikrotik are different enough that you don't know if you have API access, the expect script is going to be a bit of work as well, the 2.8 to 2.9 to 3.x to 4.x to 5.x command structures and output changed enough to be a royal pain. If the majority are post 3.x I would write code to handle those with the API and do the others by hand. On 11/2/11 5:26 AM, Scott Reed wrote: I have used expect and telnet. Re: [WISPA] UBNT sectors 120s, 90s, or 60s?
I definitely want 120*. Beyond that, assuming we're talking about 2.4, then 60* isn't doable. There just isn't the spectrum and without GPS it isn't going to work. 90* is going to be tough but could probably work with vertical separation. Shane, or any other antenna manufacturers that see this. If you would like us to add your antennas as options on the mywificoverage.com site antenna drop down list, we need the .ant files for the antennas. Just for base station antennas in 2.4, 5, 3.65GHz, and 900MHz at this time. If you don't have .ant files, shoot me an email off-list and I will send you a spreadsheet to help create them. For others that have antennas they would like added, contact the mfg. and send us their model and .ant file so we can add them as well. Re: [WISPA] UBNT sectors 120s, 90s, or 60s?
It will be a few more weeks before I will have final specs. The holdup on the sectors has been getting the mold finalized for the aluminium radio casing for the back of the sector. This casing has just been finalized and the sectors are getting into the test chamber this week to provide us exact specs. Our real world field tests were completed last week in all frequencies with help from a number of test companies. We were provided results better then our expectations. Re: [WISPA] UBNT sectors 120s, 90s, or 60s?
Chris, All the dual pol KPPA sectors will have a mount for the radio plus a aluminium casing to contain the RF from the Rocket radio. They will also have a RF shield built inside the sector plus a plate on the top for when GPS is released. These will not require additional shields on the radios or sectors. Re: [WISPA] Bandwidth shaping and QOS
Even I finally went the Mikrotik route. Use the Tik to set max speeds. But I use the CPE to set sustained and burst amounts. This prevents bursting to the max speed of the AP. Gives us better control over the plans we provide. Add in a backend radius server for the Tik and CPE and you can automate almost everything. [WISPA] Website owner
I know this is not a WISP issue per se. In our local area there was a network admin for a large company who on the side setup about a hundred websites for local small business and individuals. Last month he took his wife's life and then killed himself. No other family left and no one to handle his affairs. His Clients are coming to me and asking how do I get control of my website. They had no agreements and no proof of ownership other than the dead mans handshake. What steps can be taken to recover these sites? Re: [WISPA] Website owner
Lookup the IP of the website through ARIN (just nslookup www.site.com), see who the IPs are assigned to. If they are sub-assigned to a smaller ISP, it should tell you that. Contact the ISP, explain the situation. Then it will depend on them. Hopefully it is a smaller shop and not GoDaddy or NetworkSolutions or some huge hosting place because they will probably have some huge pain in the ass process to get the sites released. If it's someone local, you might be able to reason with him. On 11/2/2011 2:27 PM, Steve Barnes wrote: I know this is not a WISP issue per se. Re: [WISPA] Website owner
Start by doing a whois for each domain to see if the domain is actually in the customers name or the guy who setup the site. Finding the hosting site can be difficult, but you might be able to tell from the nameserver data on the whois, or reverse lookup the IP of the domain and do an ARIN whois on the IP address, should tell you who owns the IP block. Once you have all that info, you should be able to contact both the registrar and web host to get access to the accounts. More than likely it will take some manual verification via mail or fax. Good luck. On 11/2/2011 2:27 PM, Steve Barnes wrote: I know this is not a WISP issue per se. If they are not listed as the registrant on the domain they will need to provide proof to the registrar to get control of their domain. If they are listed as the registrant they should be able to transfer their domain to a new registrar account. As for access to the content on the server, depending on where the server is located, should not take too much effort once they are listed as the registrant for the domain. Re: [WISPA] Website owner
How big a problem will depend on who the registrant of the domain names is. If the domains were actually in the name of the deceased individual that could be a real mess. If, however, he did the registration, but listed something more or less resembling the name of each business as the registrant, whatever he put for the mailing address, etc, the it may not be that bad. Meanwhile, to find where they are hosted it might help to look up the IP address associated with the www.whatever.com for each domain and use whois to track down who the space belongs to, then inquire with them if they use it themselves or service a downstream client with it. Many might not divulge information but might at least pass along a contact request. On Wed, Nov 2, 2011 at 3:27 PM, Steve Barnes st...@pcswin.com wrote: I know this is not a WISP issue per se. [WISPA] Wireless Without Limits
I will be on the cruise, but Double Radius is refusing to allow me to participate because I got my room through an employee discount and not their travel agent. Re: [WISPA] UBNT sectors 120s, 90s, or 60s?
My answer is... 60 deg. Actually, if I had my way, I'd prefer under 45 deg. Without detailed specs for the antennas, to understand what the product would be adding, its hard to suggest the market for each. UBNT makes wonderful and affordable 90 and 120 deg antennas, and if someone wants 90 or 120, I dont see why anyone would buy anything different than the proven product already available. (unless KP's antennas add something).. What I can say is that there are not any 60 deg dual pol high quality sectors on the market today, and there is a need for such a product. Admittedly, I tend to use 90 degs now. But I'd use more 60 deg, if they were available, even if it meant not gaining 360 deg coverage. I believe a combination of 5.8 and 5.3/4 is needed in combination to gain 360 coverage. In Urban and heavilly saturated suburban environments 90-120 degree antennas are almost unusable, atleast not at high modulations. The secret to a successful WISP is getting the highest modulations possible so they get the most capacity. And its better to have more capacity for limited coverage, than not enough capacity for full coverage, because with a more powerful offering, the take rate will be higher in the narrower coverage. It is true, that today, with UBNT only certified in 5.8 MIMO, 60 deg antennas would not likely safely enable full 360 degree coverage in most cases, prior to sync, and maybe not even then with noise floors. And as well, low density would warrant cost savings of fewer sectors. And obtaining 360deg is more important in low density areas. I'm sure this is why 120 and 90s are more attractive to rural WISPs. But the needs are much different for noisy Suburban/Urban. 120-90 deg antennas are to risky to use in urban cases. It should also be noted that spectrum reuse is sometimes possible, in Urban areas, mounted on opposite sides of penthouses, even without syncing, and often 10Mhz channels can be used to gain the coverage. Urban will choose 10Mhz, if they have a low colo cost, and can prove that higher modulation is achievable with less noise as a result of narrower sectors. So the decission may come down to which market segment KP wants to target, rural versus urban. And if they want a unique product, or compete head to head with others that have equivellent products. Agree with others on the domain stuff. If you can get access to the domain, but can't get access to the content - we've used HTTrack to download a client's site and then put it up on our servers as their host. If it's a CMS this won't work, but it works for HTML sites. Martha Martha Huizenga 202-546-5898 */DC Access, LLC http://www.dcaccess.net/ Friendly, Local, Affordable, Internet! Yes it is, it's what UBNT should have been to begin with, but I need 2.4 120*'s and 5.8 120*'s now while the weather is good. -- Original Message -- From: Chris Gotstein ch...@uplogon.com Reply-To: WISPA General List wireless@wispa.org Date: Wed, 02 Nov 2011 14:32:51 -0500 That's a major plus for us as well.
