Simply put - everything is in one pot. There are also many capabilities.

One thing I see as a major benefit is the simplicity of CALEA
captures. No extra work for what's already in place.

Re: [WISPA] Really Simple Mikrotik shaping?

2009-01-20 Thread eje
I like to do both. Preference is pppoe but if they don't have a router we do
dhcp. But with todays radios we often set the radio up to do pppoe.
One of the nice thing with pppoe is its easy to segregate the clients and
firewall them and quickly track down an virus infected user and prevent clients
from infecting each others as well track bit usage on traffic between clients
as well limit bandwidth utilization between two clients on the same ap no way
to do with dhcp.
Also easier to add more ips on a site since pppoe uses /32 networks for client
ip assignments. So you do not have to route a complete subnet to the area just
have a "central" pppoe pool and have ospf route things where it needs to go.

I just don't see which of those you can't do with simple DHCP and

have to set up a PPPOE client on their PC or router or Xbox 360 or

I try to avoid DHCP like the plague since there is no good way to detect rouge
DHCP servers on the network.(I.E. plugging your router in backwards) most
people have routers that do PPPoE and Motorola canopy can do PPPoE from the SM.
So most of the time the customers just plug in the device into the router and
there isn't a problem. In most situations the customers do not even know they
are on PPPoE.

There is a lot of cool things you can do with radius / pppoe systems, change an
IP if they haven't paid which can redirect customers to non-payment portals,
use radius to dole out IP address ranges, authentication, encryption, and
automatic bandwidth rules via MT's. These are just a few of the cool things
can result with PPPoE / Radius systems. Like David said all of these things
can be done without PPPoE but it is a lot easier to control the customer from
an external system with these things in place.

Re: [WISPA] Really Simple Mikrotik shaping?

2009-01-20 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
PPPoE offer the following advantage to an operator.
1. Allows for central management of a subcriber (all / many aspects of the
subcriber attributes)
2. Separates the physical network from the subscriber connection. (Which
allows for network changes that could be totally transparent to the
subscribers.
3. Allows for consistent management over different forms of service delivery
networks.
4. Allows for Customer Service / Support Reps not to be full engineers.

All of these benefits are of lower value to a network operator with a
small(er) number of low end (less sophisticated / residental or small
business) subscribers. However all of these tend to have a very HIGH value
to network operators who have a large(er) number of such subcribers.

PPPOE requires extra configuration for every client, requires extra
configuration at every tower, and yields relatively little practical benefit
- as shown here, every benefit PPPOE gives you, can be had another way
that's easier on both the network operators and the customers.

I really don't get the love affair with PPPOE; I assume there's something
I'm missing, and I've always been curious as to what.

(Also, having realized that Mikrotik includes built-in RADIUS relay, I think
that will take care of the original question, and shoulda thought of it
before.)

Is there a simple way to do this with Mikrotik RouterOS? I know you can

We currently use Radius to apply up and down BW throttling at the MT AP,
without MT clients. Some are some are not, but works the same. Also as
mentioned through the Access List you can set the throttling on the wireless
link rather than through a queue.

We are using MT AP's with Nanostation SU.

If you are using Mikrotik for both AP's and CPE's, you can use the
Default AP/Client Tx Rate settings under the wireless tab on your
wireless interface properties.

If you're not using Mikrotik clients it will only be able to control the

AP Tx(client download) speeds.

If you add the customers to the access list you can override these
default settings.

With MT clients, yes this is possible. If you have a simple subnet you
can do PCQ as well in in your queues if you wish too.

Example: All users in registration table get x download and x upload
unless other changed manually.

Is this possible? I've been wanting something like this as well.

[WISPA] Really Simple Mikrotik shaping?

2009-01-19 Thread David E. Smith
A lot of the more expensive radios out there let you do bandwidth
throttling by device - instead of throttling by IP address, or device
MAC (because you could have several MACs behind one radio), you simply
say "this radio gets X down/Y up" and you're done.

Is there a simple way to do this with Mikrotik RouterOS? I know you can
shape by IP address, and I suppose I could get fancy with packet marks
or something, but I'm trying to keep the configuration as simple as
possible. (If it's something that also can be set via RADIUS, that'd be
even better, as I hope someday to be able to automate more things like
this.)
