Re: [WISPA] need WISPA to step up

2005-09-07 Thread Tom DeReggi
I disagree with you Rick. Part-15's effort should be supported as well as
WISPA's. Different organizations just have different ways that they can
help, different resources to offer, and different goals to accomplish.
Part-15 took an approach that may had more beurocracy involved and
interaction with FEMA and FCC, but its still a method that got started early
to fight through the beurocracy sooner, for a possible larger impact long
term. WISPA member's support also had its roll to get help out immediately
to those that needed it immediately like MAC's group, bypassing the
beaurocracy. But all efforts help. At this point, I think most people's
intentions are not self-serving, but to help where they can in a time of
need. There will be plenty of reward after the fact for people that do
assist, wether it is via press, compensation, access to new client's or just
plain self satisfaction that the contributor attempted to be a better
person.

If we looked for corruption, minds could go wild, with possibilties.
Imagination could make just about anyone's efforts look self serving. For
example, where does the gear go after the crisis is over? But those are all
secondary concerns to getting people help. Why shouldn't an association
take advantage of benefits gainable associated with giving? So my opinion
is put your contribution where you feel most comfortable putting it, but
lets not knock anyone's assistence. Its not a competition.

Imagine, after the city's cleaned up, and we got to collectively KEEP the

OK guys that's enough. Part-15 is doing what it's doing. We're (wispa)
helping with that effort to the degree that we are able to. No more
infighting, back-stabbing or other whining. The people in the heart of this
mess (the Katrina mess) don't have the time, need, or desire to read this
junk. If you don't want to work with a group, don't. If you have a problem
beyond that take it up with the board not the world.

Well, I've found myself to be personna non grata all over the place today.
Seems every time I open my mouth, I am lauded as a wonderful thinker and a
complete idiot all at the same time. Guess I just have some latent knack

stirring people up. I might as well end up getting myself removed from

Let me respond - though this is NOT an argument. I'd just like to add a

Whether this is true or not doesn't really matter. I don't think IBM,
Intel, Cisco, WalMart, SBC, Microsoft and so on (the list is VERY long,
VERY

long) who are giving large amounts of money and products to the relief
effort do this purely for humanitarian reasons. They plug themselves to
every media outlet that will listen and publish... and promote themselves
doing so.Does it matter? Well, motives may matter... but probably
not
to the person who can call his family, or find his family, or try to find
a

new life becuase someone donated something to make it happen. Does it
change our view of these companies and organizations? Probably not.
The

Lord loveth a cheerful giver. But whether what the giver gave was given
cheerfully or grudgingly, it still tends to do the same for the person
who
gets it. The difference is what it does for the one doing the giving.
Let

them find thier own reward or shame.

This is an effort that needs to be thankless, and in THAT fact, it will
come out that a wireless organization stepped up to the plate, and
because

of their efforts, a whole lot of people were more comfortable.

Trust me, it will, for the most part, be thankless. Not a freaking
soul's

gonna remember (except those who see certain names circulated widely and
often in our daily circles) who did what in a year.

Imagine, after the city's cleaned up, and we got to collectively KEEP the

antenna locations we borrowed to put the network in place, there'd be

What a great notion. But isn't that less that perfectly altruistic, as
well? Not that I'm criticising it at all.

That said, I'm helping Mac and Johnny in their efforts, directly, for the

same reason I never give money to the salvation army or the red cross. I

Money I have in almost no quantity. Time and effort I do.

I think a whole lot of people here ought to think real hard about this

new-found relationship with P15 that wouldn't exist without tragedy as the
underlying cement.

I would like to think that all of us grow a bit. And if personal
frictions

result in the future, or even now... Let's not let that get in the way of
making the most of every opportunity to do something, no matter what we
think of some of those in charge.

There'll be plenty of time in the future to hash this out. I think it's
a

bit distracting now. Do what you think you should do, do it well, and do
it as best you can. That's as good as anyone can do, isn't it?

I don't think wispa is missing the boat.

I am a paying member of Part-15 and WISPA. I will support both.
Most of the people in WISPA are also either paid or non paid members of
Part-15.

First and foremost the help that is needed is what it takes to get these
folks to make it to tomorrow. They need food cash medicine cash lodging
cash clothes cash and to know that America is behind them.

Internet is important as well, but the first thing these folks need is
to live and get back on their feet.

One of our WISPA members, Mac Dearman, has already setup VOIP, Internet,

food and shelter for evacuees, He is doing this right now in Louisiana.
I do not care who gets the glory on this. I sent Mac $250. He has put
out a call for money, food, equipment and people to help him there
today. I am sure there are many people and organizations willing to
help and I applaud all their efforts including those of Part-15. Right
now I consider Mac's effort in place there to be our effort through
WISPA and I think he is our front line and we should support him. I say
we all give what we can and let those in place doing the work continue
to help. I plan to go there myself and help but I cannot right now. So
you ask if WISPA missed the boat? Call one of Mac's shelter VOIP lines
and ask the evacuees who answers the phone there if we are helping today

through Mac's efforts.

Mac do you have an address for people to send money to?
Like the name of the church, address phone number etc.

I would put a message on my web site for people to donate directly to.

I suppose anyone can just give to the Red Cross, etc. But I'm sure cash
sent directly to your church would be the most efficient way to donate.

Great. That is what we wanted to here. WISPA has opened the door.

  Brian and others,

I can tell you that I have spent all day working on an attempt to work with
Part-15. This isn't about, WISPA, Part-15 or any personal members of either
organization. This IS ALL ABOUT helping those in need. Getting organized
together and using WISP resources efficiently and prudently makes total
sense. We have opened the door to Part-15 and are working with several
manufacturers and people well known to our industry to assist us in this
effort to mend fences with Part-15.

It is time for all members to stop all the criticism and get behind the
effort. Trust me, we are working diligently to get this done. It is a huge
effort, more volunteer help is needed. It's time to pull together. Our
industry can use this effort to our benefit or we can continue to fracture
the industry with criticism of others. The basic fact is this: WISPA
members love and believe in our industry and so do Part-15 members! So what
is the problem here? We just need to remove the personal barriers that have
been built up in the last few years. The only way to do that in my eyes is
to shake hands, offer help to each other and work together going forward
with goals to accomplish great feats for all of our industry.

However I don't think we should "get behind" P-15 effort. I would like
it to be a joint effort by WISPs, not WISPA, P-15, Cisco, or whoever.
Lets do this for the homeless down there with the side benefit of a
little name (WISP) recognition. Not for a specific group to "get all
the glory". I know WISPA is doing this for the right reasons, but
still..Has a WISPA board member contacted P-15? I, as a paid member
of WISPA, want to coordinate with P-15 and make this a joint effort. As
soon as I get paid I will donate.
