So what happened with the Java compiler? Did that work and is it now

Wanted to get some options on what to offer him. He wants to spend

linux.

And like I said, PHP solomento is not a candidate, its not in the
same ballpark with .NET or a solid J2EE setup, but Zend Platform/
PHP 5 is. I don't think alot of people realize that Zend is the
same company that write the php engine, they are the custodian so
to speak of PHP. So its really a perfect marriage. To keep
your .NET MS analogy, its kinda like PHP is the EXPRESS version,
where Zend Platform is the enterprise version.

I think it is also REAL exciting what they are doing with the Zend
Framework. They are building complex tools with simple frameworks
to call them, and building them into the zend IDE and so forth. The
idea is to start allowing a more RAD approach to development,
similar to how witango used to be. As the Zend Framework matures,
it will provide the bridge for those coming from languages like
witango, that want to work at a higher altitude.

As for Microsoft support, if you're not an MSDN subscriber than it
can be confusing. But being a subscriber is a night and day
difference.

But things just work in the .NET world too. In the past 5 years I
can count on one hand the number of times I've had to contact MS
for technical support - and I've still got room to spare.

Not too mention the shear mass of posted articles, code samples,
free working apps, MSDN library, forums and knowledge base help
dedicated to ASP.NET, it's endless. Not unlike PHP I'm sure.

Recently the source code for the .NET framework was made
available, if you want to see how it works. Microsoft is not
running it as an open-source project, but the source is now freely
available, which will only strengthen the alternative options for
the framework on other operating systems.

It's all interesting stuff.

support. Zend is a decent sized company, but not like MS, and the
license you spend for zend, is really just for support. Dev

Zend are free.

I mean, you mentioned the ability of witango to port to java, but

mean, that probably made sense for the big company with the huge

The OEMS that witango inherited from Pervasive. But its those
decisions, that has sent so many small shops and developers running
for the hills.

I have no problem what I pay to zend, because I pay it for support,
and its worth it. 1 year of upgrades, would get you ZERO value with
witango, but with zend, that is several .5 level software revisions
and lots of great enhancements. HIGH AVAILABILITY was one of the
most
recent great enhancements. And we all have learned the money you
pay

for witango is only to have the priveledge of downloading and
installing the product. Support is above and beyond, you must pay.

MS support is not as bad as witango, but still pretty tough.

Witango-Talk: Anyone taking new projects?

2007-08-10 Thread Shane Pearlman

Hey WT community,

We have a few upcoming witango projects. I'm not sure whether or not we
want to sub-contract yet. I just wanted to throw out a ping and see if
anyone's accepting new work. Whats your price and where are you located?

Re: Witango-Talk: Google site stats...

2007-06-28 Thread Shane Pearlman
You may care or not as to whether Google has access to your client
traffic statistics.

If your client does not want this - see if you can get yourself a
pre-google copy of urchin - which is the software they bought to create
Google analytics. Same service -except it runs off your own servers.

just a caution about this category of service. It relies on a
javascript that drops a 3rd party cookie in the visitors' browsers. If
those browsers are configured to reject 3rd party cookies, then your
data will be catywumpus, as each page visit will look like a new
visitor. When using a similar service, it became apparent that a large
portion of people have the block on 3rd party cookies, which then
required that we look at data through that lens.

is there any way to do this?

Witango-Talk: Thank you for Helping us Win a Webby Award!!!

2007-06-14 Thread Shane Pearlman
Thank you everyone,

Peter & I just got back from the Webby awards in New York. We truly
appreciate all the support each of you provided. Blip.tv swept the tables
and took both the people's choice and the jury prize for the broadband
category. We are incredibly proud of them and quite honored. The event was
extravagant and an absolute blast.

With Sincere Thanks,

Backup Mail servers can now be used

Filesystem actions for List, Create and Delete directories.

All file actions can now used FTP

Insert and Search builders have been updated and modernised.

Heaps of interface improvements in the Studio

RE: Witango-Talk: Compiling for J2EE

2007-05-15 Thread Shane Pearlman
So looking into this deeper, I noticed on the Witango site that there is the
following:

Witango for J2EE v5.5 Standard EditionAU$ 6499 US$ 4875
EURO 4030

Witango for J2EE v5.5 Application EditionAU$ 3998 US$ 2999
EURO 2479

I wonder if I made a stupid assumption. I was under the impression that if I
compiled from the Witango studio into J2EE compiled code that tomcat could
just run it. Does it actually need the Witango pluggin and is that what
costs 3-5k? Is there anything else I am missing?

What I was hoping to do is use this in conjunction with flex. The advantage
of flex for a front end is that it is completely browser and platform
independent. Using java to provide back end database services truly appealed
to me - especially if we could capitalize on the rapid development time that
Witango provides us. Most systems are java enabled and that would allow us a
certain freedom from the Witango server for our self hosted clients.

We're running an enterprise-wide application for data collection and a
public access website about this data for a US Federal organization.

Main glitches: quirks of various J2EE server; variables are *not* retained
if you have to restart the server (unlike the WitangoServer, which does save
user sessions); J2EE needs to be restarted for changes to take effect.

If your code will run on the 5.5 WitangoServer, then it's close to being
ready to compile. We develop, test on WitangoServer before ever moving to
compilation. The syntax checker helps, but you will have occasional
instances where the compiler fails anyway (due to bad coding). You have to
really go crazy on quoting if you want reliable apps. E.g., <@ifequal this
that> is not good. To make array filters work, you pretty much have to do
this <@assign name="request$this" value="<@filter array='request$thatarray'
expr='#2 = "whatever" '>"> or it's very likely to fail. You cannot go wrong,
quoting everything (properly nested, of course).

If you use lots of include files you can change these on the fly without
having to restart the J2EE server. (Advantage!)

If you use lots of include files you increase your chances of putting in
code that will cause errors on the J2EE server, and these of course are not
checked by either the syntax checker or compiler (Disadvantage!)

It's a learning process, getting from older code to J2EE-successful code,
but we have found that (with debugged code) it is a remarkably robust,
well-performing solution. Initially it was a bit painful, but now we do it
so routinely, it's hard to recall lots of our "learning curve" issues.

Subject: Re: Witango-Talk: Compiling for J2EE

Haven't experimented with v6 yet.

<@urlencode> does all this conversion automatically (so you don't have to
think about it) - there is also a matching tag <@urldecode>

The %26 trick worked nicely thanks.

Is the <@URLENCODE> and encoding=url supposed to do this for you?

Try passing the link through the <@URLENCODE STR=""> metatag where it
gets displayed. Might help though it probably isn't really the issue.

I wish to pass a string such as:

isellit/products/products.taf?_function=list&Prod_No=10.2035

To a TAF that builds a frameset. Unfortunately by the time it gets there it
is:

isellit/products/products.taf?_function=list

Obviously the ampersand is throwing me but I'm not sure what very obvious
thing I am doing wrong.

To test it I built a little test taf:

http://www.kayellaustralia.com.au/frametest.taf

Enter: isellit/products/products.taf?_function=list&Prod_No=10.2035

And it works!!

But the actual implementation is for a Newsletter that is built from a
content management system and sent as HTML email. You can view a sample one
here:

http://www.kayellaustralia.com.au/sample_newsletter.html

The links in question are the 'Related Products' links.

I cannot fathom what the difference is except one argument string is sent
from a form and the other hard coded into a A HREF.

Anyone got some pointers?

RE: Witango-Talk: JS Form Validation

2007-03-30 Thread Shane Pearlman
We have code coloring for error fields on a number of sites (I'm sorry but
we are way to slammed today to dig up samples - let me know if you are still
stuck on Monday & I'll get oyu sample code)

If you have a validation error, then just set the css on the form field to
be red or whatever you like using JS. Just search google for css input field
color and it should give you what you want.

I guess if no one has something they have found to work well I will do that.
I have done some searching so far just found stuff that puts up an alert
where I really would prefer the color coding of the missing fields.

Syntax Errors

Hi Guys,

I work with Adam and I'm trying to help him with the upgrade. I wanted
to give a little more info since the last email from support. We're
upgrading from Server 5.0 to 5.5 because of the database upgrade from
Pervasive.SQL 2000 to 9.5. For some reason, we cannot get ODBC to work
in the 5.0 scenario and are forced to upgrade Witango so that we can use
JDBC. That's what started all this.

The error Adam is referring to is in an application that is running in
production on 5.0 just fine with the same exact data. We've installed
5.5 on a test server and changed the datasources to JDBC and now we're
receiving this error.

-
Error
An error occurred while processing your request:
File: html_mailer.taf
Position: If_Write_County_Header
Class: Internal
Main Error Number: -18

Error during expression evaluation.
Closing bracket missing in statement [(""!="BOONE]
-

This is an IF ACTION and is very simple. The code simply compares the
two values to verify that they're not the same. These are the two values:

@@request$MLS_Records[<@CALC "@@request$i - 1">,12]
@@request$MLS_Records[@@request$i,12]

Notice in the Witango error the first value is empty and the second is
BOONE. For some reason, Witango is cutting off end quote and
parenthesis. And you can see in this specific instance, there isn't any
quotes in the values themselves.

The thing that's driving us crazy is that it's worked just fine on 5.0.

I know this is kind of the same thing Adam has already reported, I just
wanted to put it back out there again, because we're getting no where.

Also, I tried using the suggestion that the Witango Support offered, but
still no change. In fact, the exact error from above is produced.

Any help? Anyone?

Thanks,

David Green

RE: Witango-Talk: Making a SOAP Call

2007-01-18 Thread Shane Pearlman
(Thanks John)

Appreciate the help.

I have a quick question regarding the extraction of data from the response.
I was able to parse the results using

<@assign request$xpathresult "<@ELEMENTVALUE object=myresult
xpath=//soapenv:Envelope/soapenv:Body/getLatestNoonRateResponse/getLatestNoo
nRateReturn>">

When I try to parse it further though I get stuck as the problem is that the
response is itself another XML doc, but I can't get it to DOM. When I take
the last output and re DOM it I get a namespace error. I was able to get to
it using @locate but would like to understand why I am having the namespace
issue and how to get to the data properly via xml dom.

Any thoughts?

K – you are =)    (happens to the
best of us)

@arg displays the value of an argument
passed from either url or from a form. You cannot assign to it (I think –
correct me someone if I am wrong)

You are trying to assign a value –
which is done to a variable. I would recommend also adding a scope, just a good
habit.

So .. to set this value … use as tom
suggested:

<@ASSIGN request$TOTALCHARS “<@CALC
expr=’<@length str=“@@dump”>’>”>

Then to display result … @@request$TOTALCHARS
or <@var request$TOTALCHARS>

Hi there everyone,

I am assuming that I  have to use <@CALC> somewhere here, but
I’m not really sure how because  this isn’t working for me

My logic is  this:

<@ASSIGN NAME="dump" VALUE="  'http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
 xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
 xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">

http://someURL">

number
number
number
Y
<@ARG LASTNAME>

<@ARG FIRSTNAME>
   etc,  etc,

'>">
<@ARG TOTALCHARS
 VALUE='<@CALC len(@@dump)>'>

HERE ARE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CHARACTERS <@ARG TOTALCHARS>

This doesn’t  seem to do it...is there something I’m missing
here?

RE: Witango-Talk: Best way to handle client edit of pages?

2006-07-05 Thread Shane Pearlman
Not sure which option you are asking about:

Include vs DB: There are pros and cons to both. Includes can be transferred
via ftp and are not completely dependant on a web based content mgt system.
That said, includes are a true pain in the ass when it comes to doing a
search. DBs are faster I believe (but am not positive).

Firefox vs netscape vs safari vs IE: for a mac user the browser of coice
should be firefox of course. =) the nice thing about an internal site is
that you can lock down what browser they use and only worry about 1. In
fact, I one client where we check for the browser and if it is the wrong one
then redirecting them to the download page for your browser of choice after
a nice little note.

Tiny mce vs fck edit: oh brother - the great debate. Frankly they are both
frustrating apps that are the best I have found but are still bug ridden. We
went back and forth and ultimately chose tiny mce because it seemed to be
getting a little more support from the community. They pretty much do
exactly the same thing. The trick is to make sure that your clients know
that this is an "experimental" tool and that it does have some problems
which you don't really have the power to fix (or the willpower or desire).
Make sure they understand that this still requires some basic web/html
knowledge - like file path and other common concepts. The other comment I
recommend is to dumb it down and only give them select action and if the
design of the site is important, have you or your designer create a series
of styles to draw from and a limited color pallet. Avoids them creating html
with bright yellow text on a purple background next to a red image. Egads
you would be amazed.

OK looks like the 1st will run on everything but safari and the other may
work on safari. These folks use Netscape on Mac although I am trying to
switch them over to FireFox. So the next question is which one is easier to
integrate with witango.

RE: Witango-Talk: Best way to handle client edit of pages?

2006-07-04 Thread Shane Pearlman
If this has not been covered by someone else (stepping in mid thread) I
handle this in one of two ways:

1. Put the code you want them to edit in an include file (xxx.inc) and then
either allow them access to a folder with all the include file via ftp or
build a quick editor by dumping the include file in a textarea. You can
always use fckedit or tiny mce to add wysiwyg editing on the web. Then where
the content used to be just use the Witango <@include file=path/xxx.inc">
tag.

2. do the same but instead of includes store the content in a database
field.

Noel,

It sounds as if your issue is that you are having trouble extracting the
email address from a long string of information, is that correct?

How about using a regular expression rather than tokenizing?

This is really what I wanted to do. However, because I'm not
great with arrays, I can't figure out how to grab a specific
value to put into the database. I can never get to the point
where I can get @@var[1,3], for instance.

We use subversion extensively, but you can't integrate into studio. and
like John said, tortoisesvn is hands down the easiest client, but there is
nothing like that for the mac, unless you go through an xcode compile and
install, and still doesn't work right.

For the mac, I use iSVN, but mostly, just the terminal and command
line.

We have integrated subversion into witango on the server side, for
managing all of our projects, and automating updates and stuff. I did a post a
while back on it, with screen shots.

RE: Witango-Talk: Avoiding Duplicate customers

2006-03-14 Thread Shane Pearlman
Hi Dan,

Since the whole cart sits in a user var array, after a successful purchase I
dump the cart into a new user var array called something like last purchase
and create another user var called last purchase ts. If that user tries to
process another transaction within 15 minutes, I compare the carts and if
they are identical, I shift them to an error cart duplication page and let
them know that if this is not an error, come back in 15.

It's not the perfect solutions and I'm sure that someone else may have a
better one.

Christian,

To your simple question my simple answer...

Everyware and/or Pervasive in their wisdom (or lack there of) decided
to mix Waste, MacApp, PowerPlant, pascal strings and a few other
libraries and frameworks that are no longer supported or updated by
the companies that wrote them when the Mac Dev Studio was created.
We subsequently carbonised the code so it would run on OS X 10.1.
When Apple switched from SGI to HP 64 bit interfaces and made other
changes that we know know suited their port to Intel CPUs several of
these carbon libraries and frameworks began to exhibit some rather
interesting behaviour that meant that we would have to do extensive
reworking of the OS X dev studio. This meant rewriting several
libraries and parts of the frameworks to make them work, only to then
throw the code away. The current OS X dev studio 5.5 is a carbon app
and carbon is the last thing on the list Apple is supporting these
days so we had no choice but to redevelop the OS X dev studio
completely in the short term. When the engineers provided me with
the estimate of how long it would take to rewrite the libraries and
frameworks it was similar to what it was going to be to get the java
based dev studio ready for beta or so I was told.

We had decided to redevelop the Dev Studio for all platforms in Java
to make it faster to bring bug fixes and features to both platforms
rather than keeping it a C/C++ application and having one team for an
OS X Dev Studio and one for a Windows Dev Studio. We will also be
able to support development on Linux and Solaris. Basically any OS
that has a 5.0 JVM will be able to run the Dev Studio.

I made the decision to fast track the new dev studio which has a core
that is 5.5 compatible and provides a solid foundation on which we
are building the 6.0 dev studio. We are running about 4 months
behind schedule for the 5.5 core but a public beta will start in the
coming weeks and it will be for testing with the 5.5 server and 5.5
feature set.

To see where we are today a screen shot of todays build of the new
Dev Studio running on OS X 10.4.5 and the 5.0 JVM is here:

http://www.witango.com/downloads/DS_5.5x.jpg

The team working on the 5.5 compatible features tell me that the core
is now feature complete and is running through QA as we speak. I
ESTIMATE that the beta will begin APPROXIMATELY at the end of March.

Kind Regards

Phil

P.S. If I get ridiculed for missing the "end of March" date I may
have to put my new open nature away. ;)

Witango-Talk: wierd firefox file action error

2005-11-07 Thread Shane Pearlman

So here’s the deal.

My CMS system seems to work fine on
everyone’s firefox browser but my newest sub contractor. Same box as
mine, same version of firefox. Any time he tries to use a file action, it
causes his browser to choke. No error in IE. We are baffled. Tried turning off

It throws the following message claiming
the file doesn’t exist. The action actually works, but the browser chokes
immediately after.

  [File
Action] [12]   Delete_File

  [Error] [13]  -301
The specified file or directory

does not exist.

Witango-Talk: Netscape 8

Has anyone had this error with Netscape 8?

It has the ability to use either rendering engine, IE or
Firefox and is reasonably accurate. (nice for development)

In IE mode, when I refresh, the post args seem to disappear!
Not good.

Particular situation it shows up in:

When in the IE mode, in my shopping cart, someone adds a
product to the cart, and then hits refresh (bad bad bad – I test for it
and block it), it crashes because form args are missing. Problem is that my
test crashes it since the vars are empty. I have solved it by checking for one
var and failing the add if missing, but this seems to be a major flaw. Does not
do this in IE mode. Neither IE nor Firefox has this problem.

Use <@LOCATE STR="" FINDSTR=""> to find the start and end position, then do
the math to figure out the length, and use <@substring> to pull it out. That
assumes you will only have 1 [ and one ] in the string. If you have
multiples ... you might try something with tokenize.

What customizations have you had to do to get it working? I am just beginning this

It went together really quickly, although I did do a bit of

I'm poking around a bit at the RSS feed part of it now, and have also
added image embedding (via a custom tag from a media database). Matt (the guy
running the site) has used it quite extensively and really likes it. I've also
added a basic Rich Text editor (freely available here - just doesn't work in
Safari, unfortunately, but is great in Firefox on the Mac - http://www.kevinroth.com/rte/demo.htm)
to the publishing side so he can put in the basic HTML stuff as well.

Maybe this would be another good thing to pull together in an updated

Witango-Talk: forcing witango to process any tags in an argument when displaying to screen.

2005-10-02 Thread Shane Pearlman

Hi
folks,

I am
trying integrate tinymce ( free _javascript_ wysiwyg on sourceforge) into my cms
and have run into a problem.

When the
user has finished making updates and saves, I update the include file which
stores the html and display an arg which holds the content from the text area.
When I display the argument it displays it all without processing and replacing
Witango vars with their values. Is there a way to force Witango to process the
code before diplaying it? I have come up with a solution which goes around the
problem, but I have run into it before and would love to know the solution.

you can store it or use it.

using it would look something like:

<@IF EXPR="<@CGIPARAM USER_AGENT> contains 'mac'">

you could likewise assign variables to different browsers and
versions by detecting the substrings and then use those variables to
generate different html based on the browser.

Witango-Talk: JS $%^%^ Browser issue

2005-08-22 Thread Shane Pearlman

Two questions:

1. Is there a way
in Witango to get the users browser and store it in a Witango var before
processing the code – something like USER_AGENT?

2. This should be
the most basic thing and yet I can’t seem to get it to behave. IE refuses
to create a layer object and let me reference it. Says it is null and void.

Works fine in
Firefox/Netscape

Eval() statement
fails in IE .. browser complains stating the _expression_ return undefined or
null as if the layer doesn’t exist. Can anyone see off hand what I am
missing?

I even tried a
direct command and it fails - document.all['Custom'].style.visibility =
"visible";

Same error!

WTF!?!  =)

I dumped a bunch of the code below:

RE: Witango-Talk: <@omit>

2005-08-10 Thread Shane Pearlman
Try using the

<@DQ> double quote, or <@SQ> single quote

Replacement tags - made for problems just like that - that might do it.

Subject: Witango-Talk: <@omit>

I have tried several ways and none work.

I have to make sure that a double quote doesn't get entered into a field.

I have used <@omit str="@@var" char="""> or <@omit str="@@var" char="<@char
code='34'>"> and <@omit str="@@var" char='"'> which is ' "  '.

None of them seem to work.
I would be appreciative about any tips on this one.

Thanks.

Witango-Talk: setting database through a user var

2005-08-07 Thread Shane Pearlman

Is there a way to abstract the name of the database in a witango
database action?

Situation:

I am building an app which is meant to perform the same
lookup & (later) addition/update to a series of identical database tables,
which reside in different databases (sources). Which database the code needs to
access depends on which user is logged in. I am using MSSQL & ODBC.

Any suggestions?

Shane

Shane,

You could add this snippet to your landing page to simply redirect people
without javascript to a page informing them that javascript is necessary
and how they could turn it on.

You may need "http://."; after the URL= in the command above.

Thanks Alan,

That is a simple elegant solution. Wish I could use it. In this case, the
mission critical page happens to be the landing page, so no click through or
log in happen before JavaScript detection is necessary. Any suggestions
without using a form?

Heya Shane,

yeah there's a bunch of ways to do this, the following way is the way
i like to do it:

on one of your pages put one of these in a form , i like to do this at the login screen if
you have one

then on that page you put this inside a javscript block:

document.forms['formname'].elements['javascripton'].value="Y";

what that does is set the hidden arg to Y if javascript is on, because
if javascript is off, that won't work.

then when the user submits the form, on your next page check <@arg
javascripton> for Y or N, you can store that in a user var if you want
so you will always remember if that user has javascript on or not
while they are in your system.

Witango-Talk: shopping cart

2005-07-27 Thread Shane Pearlman

I have a small client that needs a simple shopping cart. It
is not worth my time to build one from scratch. Can anyone suggest a well
built, reasonably priced or cheap cart. Witango would be awesome, php or asp
would be okay.
