We all look forward to that I hope it really is next week and does not drag on as it has before. This recent thread about frameworks has been a most interesting discussion and one of the best Witango positive ones in a long time. Re: Witango-Talk: is witango alive?
Hi All, I have committed to Robert That I will help him with that forum. The key to conversion is to get the frame work going, in PHP there is so many ways to retrieve data from database that it can look overwhelming at that start. and most of the example for dealing with data retrieval in PHP is a mesh of PHP and SQL mixed together, and on the PHP forums I frequent I see this over and over where the people can wrap there head around dealing with data this way. The approach Robert took helps separated the getting of the data from the working with the data, so like in witango you know that the search action is going to return a resultset, and then you just iterate thru the result set, with the code Robert posted in previous email it takes the data returned and turns it into a PHP associative array and then you just write code base on the named result set so as you can see it is a simple matter from this point, below is an example of a "Search action" with a "Table of All Values" $query = "SQL Statement here" $inarray = $global_app->getResultSetFromConn($myconn,$query); if (count($inarray) > 0) { //create table from search $bool_header = true; $res = ""; $res = ""; if ($bool_header){ foreach($inarray[0] as $key => $val){ $res .= "" . $key . ""; } $res .= ""; } $res .= ""; foreach($inarray as $rows){ $colIdx = 0; $colVal = ''; foreach ($rows as $cols){ if ($colIdx == 0) $colVal = $cols; if ($colIdx == 0) { $res .= "_function=detail&row=".$colVal.">" . $cols . ""; }else { $res .= "" . $cols . ""; } $colIdx += 1; } $res .= ""; } $res .= ""; echo $res; } Ben On Jan 28, 2008, at 11:50 AM, Robert Garcia wrote: I never made it live. That is very cool, especially with the number languages it outputs to. I have looked at many of these, and the only problem I have had, is they almost always use old php 4 code, and older methods to connect to mysql. Over time, I am guessing more of them will catch up. I only felt compelled to use PHP when it reached version 5, and also the new mysqli connectors. That demo was very nice. -- Robert Garcia President - BigHead Technology VP Application Development - eventpix.com 13653 West Park Dr Magalia, Ca 95954 ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://bighead.net/ - http://eventpix.com/ On Jan 25, 2008, at 5:38 PM, Brian Mowers wrote: Alan, Have you heard of CodeCharge Studio? I really like how witango has the ability to export as java and IMO it seems like there might be a really good strategy here... Imagine if the witango editor was a stand alone "dev studio" type app where you could create and prototype things quickly then say "execute" to fire up a limited witango server (like the lite or trial version) to test your code right there as you were developing it. When you were done developing, you could choose to export as Java, PHP, CF, asp/asp.net, or whatever other languages may be popular at the time. Also available for sale was the servers that are sold now that could run the native witango code (and maybe had some other pluses as to why youd want to use it vs the exportable languages) I'm not much of a business man, and don't know if this would be a good model to go with, but it sounds like a neat idea to me Web developers like us could buy the witango editor for maybe a couple hundred dollars and write things quickly and export it to whatever language our clients may want keeping us and our clients happy. Then also, if we wanted a highly optomized witango specific server we could buy that too for the clients who wanted to go that route. Seems like it would help keep the community alive and get more exposure to witango while also generating revenue. But yeah, I'm no business expert and don't know With's current status or business model :P On 1/25/08, Chuck Lockwood <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I'm here, supporting a couple of big Witango apps and doing new stuff in > .NET > > I agree with Rick, the list is now seasoned developers no longer pushing the > "witango envelope". > > Nice to see people checking in though > > Chuck Lockwood > LockData Technologies > > -Original Message- > From: Scott Cadillac [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 3:03 PM > To: witango-talk@witango.com > Subject: Re: Witango-Talk: is witango alive? > > > Maybe "no news is good news" as far as the list being quiet. > > > > Nobody is reporting problems, maybe things are just working smoothly > > for everyone (: > > Either that or everybody else has left... > > Maybe we should have a roll-call? > > PRESENT, and I brought my pencil ;-) > > > Scott, > > > > > > > > TO UNSUBSCRIBE: Go to http://www.witango.com/developer/maillist.taf > > > > > > TO UNSUBSCRIBE: Go to http://www.witango.com/developer/maillist.taf > > TO UNSUBSCRIBE: Go to http://www.witango.com/developer/maillist.taf -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. I have built a forum for people to discuss the issues of witango porting to php, and a place to view code snippets and frameworks we have built. But its purely a volunteer thing, and so hard to find the time. I have been thinking about it more, and I think the best thing to help the community may be just to release some code out there, and let you figure it out. When I started my move to PHP, I picked a smaller site, but filled with complexity. http://www.binder-usa.com/ It is not large but has a lot of complex stuff for a small site. I created a framework for things like domain variables and stuff, and also had to build a framework for dealing with arrays. Witango 2 php is difficult, unless you build a way to get results sets in php, that you handle like you did in witango, then you can just do a lot of straight porting. So if you have 2 dimensional arrays in php, like you do all the time (resultsets) in witango, it gets much easier. But then, how do you <@filter, or any other type of tag in witango, in php, so I built lots of functions in php, that mimic things like @filter. You would be surprised how much faster they are also. After I did this one site, I made the framework generic, and gave to other developers working for me to port other more complex witango sites, like eventpix.com. During this, the framework, and functions have been improved upon, especially by Ben Johansen, who has worked for me for the last 2 years or so. All that to say, I am thinking of putting up the binder witango code, and the php port of it, available to download. But it would require the commitment of Ben also to support people on the forum that needed help with it, or updated functions. Re: Witango-Talk: is witango alive? Other IDE Prototyping and Porting systems.
Alan, Have you heard of CodeCharge Studio? This Development Environment allows you to do just that. You can rapidly develop an application with their IDE then "port" over to the following languages: All of the following: ASP (VBScript), .NET (C#), .NET (VB), PHP, ColdFusion, Perl, Java Servlets, JSP It is stable, cheap and fast! I use it to connect to R:base database and have built some small projects. Most of my large apps are still in Tango4 and will be ported soon. I could see how someone could take my framework, and then build on it, and then export witango to php code. Prototyping in witango is great. But no one is going to do it, unless they already own witango. There is really no compelling reason to buy into it, so expensive, for prototyping. So you would spend all that time and money to build it, for just the remaining people in witango to use. -- Robert Garcia President - BigHead Technology VP Application Development - eventpix.com 13653 West Park Dr Magalia, Ca 95954 ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://bighead.net/ - http://eventpix.com/ On Jan 25, 2008, at 4:03 PM, Alan Wolfe wrote: A lot of people have talked about how you can use witango to rapidly prototype code, or rapidly develop web apps, and other people have talked about how expensive it is to use witango. Re: Witango-Talk: is witango alive?
Witango doesn't port easily, untll you build the framework to build php code like witango does, using resultsets and array manipulation. If you don't do that first, its very tough, and I can see the frustration. Here is an example of a class function in php that takes a mysqli connector and a string query, and returns an associative array resultset, just like witango results set from a query, with column names and all. /** * Query the database and return result set in an assoc. array * @author Robert Garcia * @param mysqli $myconn * @param string $query * @return array */ public function getResultSetFromConn($myconn,$query) { $resultSet = array(); if ($myconn) { //now result is multidimensional assoc array. if ($result = $myconn->query($query)) { $fields = $result->fetch_fields(); while ($row = $result->fetch_array()) { $thisRow = array(); foreach ($fields as $field){ $thisRow[$field->name] = $row[$field->name]; } $resultSet[] = $thisRow; }; $result->close(); } } $temp = $myconn->errno; $temp = $myconn->error; return $resultSet; } Think of how many times you dump an array in witango to a table. How do you do that in php, well, we build a function that takes IN a resultset type array, and a boolean for header. public function arrayToTable($inarray,$bool_header=true){ if (!count($inarray)){return "";} $res = ""; $res = ""; if ($bool_header){ foreach($inarray[0] as $key => $val){ $res .= "" . $key . ""; } $res .= ""; } $res .= ""; foreach($inarray as $rows){ foreach ($rows as $cols){ $res .= "" . $cols . ""; } $res .= ""; } $res .= ""; return $res; } Here are the functions that we use that mimics the witango <@filter> tag /** * callback function for filter function * * @author Robert Garcia * @param array $array * @return array */ private function filter_thisarray($array){ $eval = "return ".$this->arrayeval.";"; $res = eval($eval); return ($res); } /** * Filter an array ($array = your passed in array, use it for the callback expression) * sample: $status = $global_app->filter($pcustArray,"\ $array['UserID'] == '".$inarray[0]['userId']."'"); * * @author Robert Garcia * @param array $array * @param array $arrayeval * @return array */ public function filter($array,$arrayeval){ $this->arrayeval = $arrayeval; return array_values(array_filter($array,array($this,"filter_thisarray"))); } And the @distinct tag /** * Output a distinct array from input array based on fieldname entered * * @author Robert Garcia * @param array $array * @param string $fieldname * @return array */ public function array_distinct($array, $fieldname) { foreach ($array as $sub) $cmp[] = $sub[$fieldname]; $unique = array_unique($cmp); foreach ($unique as $k => $rien) $new[] = $array[$k]; return ($new); } So basically, I rolled up my sleeves and built all this, then we used it to port. Porting goes much quicker this way, and allows you to still code like you used to in witango. Then as you start new projects, you still use some of these methods, and sometimes you do whatever the heck you want, because PHP is so flexible. -- Robert Garcia President - BigHead Technology VP Application Development - eventpix.com 13653 West Park Dr Magalia, Ca 95954 ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://bighead.net/ - http://eventpix.com/ On Jan 25, 2008, at 3:00 PM, Michael Heth wrote: On Jan 25, 2008, at 2:01 PM, Kent Swisher wrote: To Robert Garcia I have started developing in PHP but find it very slow to develop compared to wita
Re: Witango-Talk: is witango alive?
I have toyed with the best way to do that. If Ben is willing, I think I can probably have this up for people within a month. I would really only take a coupe of days, but I say a month, because I am busy. If you are interested in this, let me know. You would only have 1 page but in that page was all the logical decisions on what to show the user based on the URL and their user vars. Anyway, it seems that if this was embraced by the developers then someone on the list could make a nice biz of just porting apps to PHP. The Tango developers could build the porting fee into their original bid etc. And finally for the sake of reality don't forget that the main (perhaps only) reason that PHP is the defacto standard now was that it was given away from the start and there is no way to effectively compete with free. That's how IE pushed Netscape aside and now NetNewsWire will push all the newsreader apps aside. I laughed the other day when I saw the new decode for the acronym PHP, I don't remember what it was but they are trying to make you forget that PHP actually stands for "Personal Home Page". Just a quick vote for php/mysql. The newer mysqli extension to php is an unbelievable combination that allows super fast performance and keeps your mysql servers breathing easier than it would with persistent connections. -- Robert Garcia President - BigHead Technology VP Application Development - eventpix.com 13653 West Park Dr Magalia, Ca 95954 ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://bighead.net/ - http://eventpix.com/ On Jan 25, 2008, at 1:45 PM, Susan Brkich wrote: I'm only here just in case something breaks we have delayed upgrading to a new server machine (and now I suppose we have to think about going from Tiger to Leopard, too), until we can re-write all our Witango apps in PHP w/ either FileMaker or MySQL databases, in order to avoid having to get Witango working on a new machine (Intel Mac, rather than the current Power PC). To Robert Garcia I have started developing in PHP but find it very slow to develop compared to witango. The old witango builder wizard worked for 80% of our stuff and I really miss it in PHP. Did you ever publish your white paper on how to convert witango to Zend PHP? Would you consider sharing some of your custom functions? Do you use Zend Framework in your projects now? -> Kent Swisher Engineering Tools -> Alcatel-LucentApplication Support Engineer -> Wireline Access Products [EMAIL PROTECTED] -> Petaluma, CA 707-792-7116 (on net 2-855-7116) On 1/25/2008 1:31 PM, Robert Garcia wrote: Thats not a good sign. Then couple that with the fact that is extremely expensive, it doesn't take a genius to figure that one out. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind picking witango as a new dev platform, unless they have a client or legacy app to support. > -- > > Robert Garcia > President - BigHead Technology > VP Application Development - eventpix.com > 13653 West Park Dr > Magalia, Ca 95954 > ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 > [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] > http://bighead.net/ - http://eventpix.com/ TO UNSUBSCRIBE: Go to http://www.witango.com/developer/maillist.taf

We are still developing using Witango. I have had phone and email contact with Phil in the last couple months and purchased another license recently. I didn't ask Phil about 6.0 as I had some other issues I needed help with so I can't help there. I also am anticipating the 6.0 release Steve -Original Message- From: Roland Gimpl [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 2:57 PM To: witango-talk@witango.com Subject: Re: Witango-Talk: is witango alive? Back in May, I assembled my full list of feature requests (11 pages) and sent them to Phil. My fantasy is that Witango 6 is delayed while he implements them.
