[WiX-users] Property entries (Product Name, Product Version, etc) on an installers details tab?
Hi, I notice on some of the installers I have used that the installer files detail tab has Product Name, Product Version, Copyright and other useful entries - the normal properties available for any exe. For example, the windows .Net 3.0 installer has these properties defined (dotnetfx3setup.exe). Is is possible to assign these properties to an msi installer file using Wix? If not is it possible to wrap the msi produced by Wix in an exe and assign the assembly's properties as part of the standard exe build. what's the point in having the mail list accessible to no subscribed members anyway? if someone posts, people generally reply to the list, so the person that hasn't subscribed wouldn't get the reply. I am one of those people that has stopped looking at the emails from WiX Users though, because of the amount of spam, there really is far too much of it. [WiX-users] service install - file reference problem though merge module
Hi, I was hoping someone could help me, firstly I'm using Wix 2. I have some merge modules that I have created, and what I'm trying to do is create a service in the msi. I'm using the following code: Component Id=mtmCoreServiceSettings Guid=@NEWGUID@ DiskId=1 ServiceInstall Id=pywin32instF218.900F1E9E_3D32_4108_BF7E_A4EDF75831BC Name=MTMAgent DisplayName=MTM Agent Description=The MTM Agent collects information about the host and OSS software it is monitoring Type=ownProcess Interactive=yes Start=auto Vital=yes ErrorControl=normal/ ServiceControl Id=pywin32instF218.900F1E9E_3D32_4108_BF7E_A4EDF75831BC Name=MTMAgent Stop=both Remove=uninstall Wait=yes/ Registry Id=mtmService0 Root=HKLM Key=SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Eventlog\Application\MTM Agent\ Name=EventMessageFile Type=expandable Value=[TARGETDIR]\python25\Lib\site-packages\win32\win32evtlog.pyd / Registry Id=mtmService1 Root=HKLM Key=SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Eventlog\Application\MTM Agent\ Name=TypesSupported Type=integer Value=7 / Registry Id=mtmService2 Action=removeKeyOnUninstall Root=HKLM Key=SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Eventlog\Application\MTM Agent\/ /Component The problem I'm having is the executable is stored within a merge module, the example I ran though the ID of the serviceinstall tag must be the same as the ID as the ID of the executable. Any how the msi compiles fine, and looking at the msi though Orca it looks fine, however the msi doesn't install the service or give any errors? Does anyone have ideas? Re: [WiX-users] Question about variables
Turns out the reason why I was having problems with the property being accessible from the custom action scheduler was because the property was not all uppercase. I remembered something about uppercase properties being mentioned and tried it on the offchance, it worked. So CTL_SetDefault below should have been uppercase, my mistake (obviously). From: Jim Williams [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 22 April 2008 17:35 To: Ryan O'Neill; wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: RE: [WiX-users] Question about variables The dollar sign ($) on the front of the component name MyVbsCa means to use the value of action state of the component, that is, what is going to be done to the component. gt.2 means to check if the action state is greater than 2, where 2 means not present or installed or being uninstalled. There are values 3 (install locally) and 4 (install from source) for a component, so 2 would mean install locally or install from source. So essentially, they are just checking to see if the component is going to be installed. [WiX-users] wix mailing lists open to public = more spam

Here, they have to provide a valid e-mail address, reply to a confirmation mail, and then send the spam from the same address, then unsubscribe (but chances are it will be removed, anyway, by an admin). Yes, it can be done using disposable addresses but spam usually arrives by the single action of blindly targeting the list address (probably among a million other addresses, not sent specifically here), harvested from somewhere on the web. There would be another solution to serve the causal user with a single question but SourceForge should provide it, too. A web form with captcha and all to inject a message into the list. Failing that, tightening the entry would be our only chance to keep spam at bay. John Vottero asked: What will keep the spammers from joining the list? Absolutely nothing, but spammers are (generally) a lazy bunch and won't do anything more than they have to. Most of the other SourceForge based groups I subscribe to are locked to subscriber only posting, and they have *significantly* lower spam levels. (I suspect they only get spammed when a subscriber's machine is turned into a zombie.) Re: [WiX-users] Property entries (Product Name, Product Version, etc) on an installers details tab?
I'm on Windows XP Pro, so this might differ on other OSes, but when I right click on one of my MSI and choose Properties and then go to the Summary tab I see Title, Subject, Author, Category, Keywords, Comments. He me, on this installer I'm looking at, all are populated except for Category. Of the ones that are populated they are likely coming from the Package/ element. The Description attribute seems to correlate to the Subject. The Manufactuer seems to correlate to the Author. And the Comments seems to correspond to the Comments. Not sure about the others. If an unsubscribed user posts then on their first post they get an email asking if they really wanted to post to the mailing list (with link to normal legal stuff saying it's public information etc. - we have had the odd occasion of people who think that I can magically remove their posts from the inboxes of everyone on the list!). This has eliminated incoming email spam. As a support list requiring registration is unacceptable in my case. Confirmation emails are tricky - The server takes measures to make sure it's not replying automatically to an obvious fake address.. the normal spamassassin, sender verification, SPF, etc. checks are made but I'm sure the system could be gamed (although to what end I'm not sure). OTOH I doubt sourceforge can be configured to do anything that sophisticated. You probably have the ability to set it to members only and that's about it. [WiX-users] using Visual Studio and WiX
ok, so I'm too dumb to know really what questions to ask, but here I am groping in the dark looking for a candle ... I've made lots of MSIs using the Wise Installation System, but need to switch to WiX v.2 (not v.3). What benefit will I get from driving WiX from within Visual Studio? I don't use Visual Studio for development myself, though my pc has multiple versions installed (VS6, VS2005, and VS2008) to support product builds. The .WXS install scripts i'll be supporting have an accompanying .SLN file so they were presumably made in VS. Is there a tutorial or similar for using Visual Studio for WiX? Or any handy hints somewhere? (I'm currently Getting Started in the nice WiX tut at http://www.tramontana.co.hu/wix/, using a text editor and doing the compiling etc from the command prompt.) thanks! My vote is to require registration. It's really no big deal to sign up for a list, and I don't think it would make getting started significantly harder (newbie here, speaking from current painful experience -- probably signing up would give me a buzz of achievement that I'm not yet getting from WiX ;-) Rob Mensching wrote: If anyone has any other opinions on this topic, please do make your voice heard. Re: [WiX-users] Property replacement issue with WixUIExtension andXmlFile
I would try three things: 1) Your ElementPath has a double slash at the beginning. I believe this is incorrect. We use XmlFile extensively. As an example, here's what one of our nodes looks like: util:XmlFile Id=Local_ErrorDir_nostart Action=setValue ElementPath=/configuration/appSettings/[EMAIL PROTECTED]'ErrorDir'[\]]/@value File=[INSTALLDIR]TransDetailImporterService\TransDetailImportService.exe.config Value=[[TARGET_ENVIRONMENT].ERROR_DIR] / The file snippet this is editing looks like this: ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8? configuration appSettings add key=ErrorDir value=\\Encrypt\failed/ /appSettings /configuration 2) Check the syntax of the ElementPath from above against yours. You need the full path and parameter. The syntax is pretty precise in what it will accept. 3) It's also possible that your variable (I may have the wrong terminology here) needs to be public, in other words ALL_CAPS. (not likely though, but it works for us.) When all else fails the output log from msiexec usually gives a good indication of what's going wrong with XmlFile call: Msiexec /I foo.msi /l* out.txt Lastly, I have no idea where I stole this script from, but I found a JavaScript file online that can validate your ElementPath and point you to where any typos are. I use this thing almost every time I have to edit a new xml file with Wix: -- begin code validate_xml_path.js if (2 WScript.Arguments.length) { WScript.Echo(Must specify both the file and the XSL Path to query.); WScript.Quit(1); } WScript.Echo(Opening File: + WScript.Arguments(0)); var xmlDoc = new ActiveXObject(Msxml2.DOMDocument.3.0); xmlDoc.async = false; xmlDoc.load(WScript.Arguments(0)); if (0 != xmlDoc.parseError.errorCode) { var myErr = xmlDoc.parseError; WScript.Echo(You have error + myErr.reason); } else { WScript.Echo(Query: + WScript.Arguments(1)); WScript.Echo(); // xmlDoc.setProperty(SelectionLanguage, XPath); currNode = xmlDoc.selectSingleNode(WScript.Arguments(1)); if (null == currNode) { WScript.Echo(Nothing found.); } else { WScript.Echo(currNode.text); } } -- end code From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 23, 2008 11:16 AM To: wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [WiX-users] Property replacement issue with WixUIExtension andXmlFile I'm having a problem with value replacement in a deployed XML file. XmlFile changes the value to 'Default WiX value' which is what the property 'DataValueProperty' is initial set to. But I want the XmlFile to change the value to whatever the user enters in the UI. The property seems to be updated according to the UI screens, but the XmlFile still uses the old value. -David Matthew Janulewicz [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/23/2008 02:37 PM To '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' [EMAIL PROTECTED], wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net cc Subject RE: [WiX-users] Property replacement issue with WixUIExtension andXmlFile I would try three things: 1) Your ElementPath has a double slash at the beginning. I believe this is incorrect. We use XmlFile extensively. As an example, here?s what one of our nodes looks like: util:XmlFile Id=Local_ErrorDir_nostart Action=setValue ElementPath=/configuration/appSettings/[EMAIL PROTECTED]'ErrorDir'[\]]/@value File= [INSTALLDIR]TransDetailImporterService\TransDetailImportService.exe.config Value=[[TARGET_ENVIRONMENT].ERROR_DIR] / The file snippet this is editing looks like this: ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8? configuration appSettings add key=ErrorDir value=\\Encrypt\failed/ /appSettings /configuration 2) Check the syntax of the ElementPath from above against yours. You need the full path and parameter. The syntax is pretty precise in what it will accept. 3) It?s also possible that your variable (I may have the wrong terminology here) needs to be public, in other words ALL_CAPS. (not likely though, but it works for us.) When all else fails the output log from msiexec usually gives a good indication of what?s going wrong with XmlFile call: Msiexec /I foo.msi /l* out.txt Lastly, I have no idea where I stole this script from, but I found a JavaScript file online that can validate your ElementPath and point you to where any typos are. If you need a typelib you'll have to explicitly generated one with tlbexp or equivalent, and add the typelibrary tag to that when you install it. Re: [WiX-users] wix mailing lists open to public = more spam
Require registration to post. WiX isn't the sort of subject that people typically want to ask a question or two about and then forget. Most newbies have been tasked with using WiX, so would be well advised to follow the list anyway. For the few people who have valid reasons to ask a question or two then go away, subscribing just isn't a big deal and they can unsubscribe as soon as their questions have run their course. Given the list netiquette of replying to the list rather than the individual, they need to be subscribed to get email responses to their questions anyway. It's a common practice on technical lists to require registration to post. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rob Mensching Sent: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 6:29 PM To: Rob Hamflett; wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [WiX-users] wix mailing lists open to public = more spam If anyone has any other opinions on this topic, please do make your voice heard.
