[WiX-users] I swear I looked around before asking about "pragma message" functionality...

2014-12-18 Thread gapearce
Is there a way to get something like (In C++) #pragma message("some message")
that I can put in my WiX project file? I want to output in the log the
generated product code each time it is built.

I found but I can't get it to output the value of a variable. I
tried a couple of variations of this, and they just show the literal.

It prints out "ProductCode is !(var.ProductCode)"

I am brain dead, so please excuse me for not thinking.

Thanks!

Sorry, I don't think it's at copy files. It, the "1" appears after progress
is at 100% so I think it's not at copy, but towards the end.

Maybe installfinalize/wixcheckreboot? I didn't see anything funky in the log
either, but there were ALOT of "1"s (=

Thanks for the tips!

[WiX-users] Votive: What is purpose of ProductVerstion in wixproj

2014-12-18 Thread Phill Hogland
When using Votive to create a setup project, the wixproj file includes the
line:
3.9

The wxs indicates that the Product/@Version is Version="1.0.0.0", which I
always edit to implement auto-incremented verssioning system. But since I
started creating projects using Wix 3.7, I still have many projects with:
3.7
or
3.8

Is this property actually used by the VS/wix build system, and if so should
I be updating when I install a later build of Wix toolset, or is it just a
'orphaned code'?

Re: [WiX-users] What is this code doing?

2014-12-18 Thread Pavan Konduru

It certainly is being used in the .wxs project . The error you see is somewhere
in the .wxs file(not Custom action).
Search for " CommonFilesFolder" in the whole solution.

Seems that is used somewhere. Any idea on how to find which custom action is
depending on this?

Thanks Stephan,

It seems an orphan peace of code. No fragments are using it and no reference to
that Help folder is anywhere in the project.
Seems to me safe to remove it.

I will try to get rid of it and verify if the installation is still working as
expected.

I was scared about Bogus_HHRegCA_component, tough may be a reference to
something internal.

But now it's clear that is just a simple component definition nothing else.

Subject: Re: Heat over 64 bit dll

Ahh!! okay. Thanks for the extended information. Please have a look at my below
query if you have time.

Recently i was creating a prototype of a 32-bit C++ COM+ dll using
WiXComplusExtension and created easily. I think, We have to provide
CustomActions (vbs/ js ) to administer 64 .net COM+(Instead of heat and
WixComPlusExtension)

Last question,

My observation :

1. I ran heat over 32bit c++ COM+ dll. It gave me a wxs file with
RegistrEntries and etc. I integrated the resulted wxs file with installer and
ran the installer and saw the registry entries. But did not find the COM+ entry
in Compenent Services(Dcomcnfg).

2. Now, i included the same 32bit c++ COM+ dll with
  (WixComplus Extension)
It did create same registry entries as the heat did before, but the magic is, i
can see an entry in the ComponentServices of dcomcnfg.

My Last Question: "What is the difference between both the approaches above?".

We, as Fans, will wait and look forward for version 4.0 and it will be a huge
and great version and ll be a milestone.

Have a great Day.

Thanks and Regards,
Sampat

That's true. It should just move on over. So, run heat on the 32-bit versions
and then migrate that output.

The COM data (classids etc) is typically the same for both architectures, so
massaging the 32-bit output a little should be all that's required.

[WiX-users] FW: Heat over 64 bit dll

I used to do something like that when I worked at Microsoft. You need to be
careful that ID’s can only be 72 chars. It never fails that I have file names
longer than 72 chars. Also, it is rather common to have multiple files of the
same name deployed, and this requires a system of “incrementing” the ID’s to
prevent collision. There are features that Wix 4.0 may have that will make
this much easier (Id scoping is one), but Wix 4.0 is very far from being ready
for production.

I have seen no evidence that heat can currently handle 64-bit COM very well.
Of course, the development of heat is entirely up to its fan base. With all
the many ways people want to use and extend it, code would be very welcome to
extend heat.

Thanks for your reply. :) We are using 64 com dlls.

The mechanically generated ID's are very unpleasant to use when patching
becomes necessary, and some of the options usually selected for heat (such as
placing all the components in a single fragment) will generate poor patching
performance.

1. Yes i do agree with your points. i used -suid to get the ID as name of the
file .
2. I was working on install-shield where in each component is different is very
easy to maintain component individually. Now we are planning to migrate to WiX.
Wix places all components into a single wxs which leads very uncomfortable to
read and maintenance. Why dont they incorporate an option which allows to
create wxs file for each component?

I suspect it is not 64-bit aware.::

By this line, i understand that heat is not for harvesting 64 bit files? Please
correct me if i am wrong here.

In the one case where I am forced to use heat by project management, the effect
is a bunch of files whose key paths change where every build (they wanted the

also had build race issues.

This being said, it is undeniably a popular tool.

Hi Sir,

Can heat harvest a dll file which is a 64 bit ? I am using wix 3.9.1006.0 .
When i build dll in VS2013 with 32 bit and i run heat.exe it successfully
harvest and give proper wxs file.

Now, if i build the same dll file with 64 bit and run heat over it , heat wount
generate the similar kind of wxs. Just a component and a file . No any

We have all 64 bit dlls in our product , So could you please share your

Re: [WiX-users] What is this code doing?

2014-12-18 Thread Majcica, Mario
I commented this part of code and I do get the following error:

Error 2 Unresolved reference to symbol 'Directory:CommonFilesFolder' in
section 'Fragment:'.
E:\delivery\Dev\wix37_public\src\ext\VSExtension\wixlib\HTML_Help_Registration__RTL_X86.wxs

Seems that is used somewhere. Any idea on how to find which custom action is
depending on this?

Thanks

Thanks Stephan,

It seems an orphan peace of code. No fragments are using it and no reference to
that Help folder is anywhere in the project.
Seems to me safe to remove it.

I will try to get rid of it and verify if the installation is still working as
expected.

I was scared about Bogus_HHRegCA_component, tough may be a reference to
something internal.

But now it's clear that is just a simple component definition nothing else.

Re: [WiX-users] CustomAction to run powershell script

2014-12-18 Thread John Cooper
Note that you are subject to PowerShell execution policy. Before Server 2012
R2, the default was Restricted which will block all PowerShell execution
outside of a PowerShell Concole or ISE. Many networks have GPO that will
detect changes to the ExecutionPolicy and revert it back.

With Server 2012 R2, the default is a more sensible RemoteSigned, but this
requires your scripts are signed--not hard to do, but also not commonly done.

It is possible to execute PowerShell cmdlets in C# and avoid ExecutionPolicy.

[WiX-users] How to create a sql server login with sqlauthorization?

2014-12-18 Thread patrickpirzer
I have programmed a bootstrapper project with WiX 3.8.
In my setup i create in my MSI a new local user (if he doesn't exist).
Then i'm installing (as a prerequisite) SQL Server Express and create a SQL
Server instance called "SQLEXPRESS".
After this i want to create a SQL Server login with SQLAuthentication using
the new local user.
So i tried it with these lines in my MSI:

But even when i create a login with user AND password, i always get a login
with WindowsAuthentication.
What have i to do, to get a login with SQLAuthentication?

Thanks in advance!
