Couldn't the SF system instructed to return a standard letter to
non-subscribers that offers them the simplest, e-mail based way to subscribe?
Spammers will not receive it without a valid reply address but ordinary people
will.

SourceForge is painful, period . I signed up for this list because the SF
interface to the list is absolutely horrible.

Wix is free and the support graciously provided by you and others is free. A
one-time signup isn't all that much to ask for all that in return, And it's a
small price to pay to keep spam out of the list, where every last member has to
waste time deleting it.

It's not that bad... about 3 links to follow from the main WiX page on
SourceForge. Could always just add a link to

pages to make it more obvious though.

Signing up for a forum or mailing list is commonplace these days, and a
trivial
one-time inconvenience.

If someone can't figure out how to join a mailing list, they're probably
not
going to have much success with Wix (or any type of programming for that

PLEASE require people to sign up for this list. I think you'd be hard

I implemented the spam filter one of the original posters suggested (a bunch of
Chinese/Russian words OR'd together), with the additional of "AND wix-users" to
restrict it only to this list (it caught a few non-wix legitimate messages that
I wanted) and I've only rec'd. about 2 spams (both in English) in the last two
days. It's been *excellent*. At the least, try using the filter to suck the
purported spam to a separate folder...

Is there nothing that SourceForge can do? I would have hoped that they would

There's still a problem if you prefer to use the newsgroup interface (I'm
using Thnderbird).  You
can't delete messages, and the best I think I can do is move them into a
separate folder. That
might have to suffice if we can't filter them out before they hit the list.

I second that. I google for wix solutions all the time or browse the

Here's another vote for locking out non-subscribers.

The spam isn't so bad if you read the list daily, but if you scan the
list only occasionally to search for information the spam becomes more
of an annoyance.

Improving the signal-to-noise ratio will be a good thing in the long
run.

(Do many non-subscribers post to the list, aside from the spammers?)

2008-04-23 Thread Jeremy Farrell
Require registration to post. WiX isn't the sort of subject that people
typically want to ask a question or two about and then forget. Most newbies
have been tasked with using WiX, so would be well advised to follow the list
anyway. For the few people who have valid reasons to ask a question or two then
go away, subscribing just isn't a big deal and they can unsubscribe as soon as
their questions have run their course. Given the list netiquette of replying to
the list rather than the individual, they need to be subscribed to get email
responses to their questions anyway. It's a common practice on technical lists
to require registration to post.

My vote is to require registration.

It's really no big deal to sign up for a list, and I don't think it
would make getting started significantly harder (newbie here, speaking
from current painful experience -- probably signing up would give me a
buzz of achievement that I'm not yet getting from WiX ;-)

I do something similar but it's an automatic system. If an unsubscribed
user posts then on their first post they get an email asking if they
really wanted to post to the mailing list (with link to normal legal
stuff saying it's public information etc. - we have had the odd occasion
of people who think that I can magically remove their posts from the
inboxes of everyone on the list!). This has eliminated incoming email
spam. As a support list requiring registration is unacceptable in my case.

Confirmation emails are tricky - The server takes measures to make sure
it's not replying automatically to an obvious fake address.. the normal
spamassassin, sender verification, SPF, etc. checks are made but I'm
sure the system could be gamed (although to what end I'm not sure).

OTOH I doubt sourceforge can be configured to do anything that
sophisticated. You probably have the ability to set it to members only
and that's about it.

Tony

Absolutely nothing, but spammers are (generally) a lazy bunch and won't
do anything more than they have to. Most of the other SourceForge based

have *significantly* lower spam levels. (I suspect they only get spammed

I admin a list where new people are set to moderated until their first post,
then it can be decided whether to accept and liberate the user or to remove it
as spam. But this requires extra human work and I don't know if SourceForge
supports this at all (besides, everything should work by e-mail, by replying to
prefabricated e-mail addresses in notification letters, going to a web site to
change settings would be far more hassle). But, as far as I can tell,
relatively few spammers take the trouble to join a list. Here, they have to
provide a valid e-mail address, reply to a confirmation mail, and then send the
spam from the same address, then unsubscribe (but chances are it will be
removed, anyway, by an admin). Yes, it can be done using disposable addresses
but spam usually arrives by the single action of blindly targeting the list
address (probably among a million other addresses, not sent specifically here),
harvested from somewhere on the web.

There would be another solution to serve the causal user with a single question
but SourceForge should provide it, too. A web form with captcha and all to
inject a message into the list. Failing that, tightening the entry would be our
only chance to keep spam at bay.

I would imagine that whoever is spamming the list is not intentionally
doing it, but just has wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net on a list of

Correctly if I am wrong but the member list of a mailling group
can be scanned to known spammers and get bounced from it; this way you
can bounce a spammer from all groups in one go (although it will give

Correctly if I am wrong but the member list of a mailling group can be
scanned to known spammers and get bounced from it; this way you can
bounce a spammer from all groups in one go (although it will give some
frustration if your mistakenly get bounced...)

To be honest, I never realised that you did not need an account to post

Re: [WiX-users] wix mailing lists open to public => more spam

2008-04-23 Thread Jason Rivers
what's the point in having the mail list accessible to no subscribed members
anyway?

if someone posts, people generally reply to the list, so the person that
hasn't subscribed wouldn't get the reply.

I am one of those people that has stopped looking at the emails from WiX
Users though, because of the amount of spam, there really is far too much of
it.

Here's another vote for locking out non-subscribers.

The spam isn't so bad if you read the list daily, but if you scan the
list only occasionally to search for information the spam becomes more
of an annoyance.

Improving the signal-to-noise ratio will be a good thing in the long run.

(Do many non-subscribers post to the list, aside from the spammers?)

While I understand the sentiment, the large quantities of spam probably
reduce the number of people who bother to look through the archives for
answers to their problems - there's just too much junk to wade through.
By reducing the spam, the signal to noise ratio should be improved.

Just my $.02

I implemented the spam filter one of the original posters suggested (a bunch
of Chinese/Russian words OR'd together), with the additional of "AND
wix-users" to restrict it only to this list (it caught a few non-wix
legitimate messages that I wanted) and I've only rec'd. about 2 spams (both
in English) in the last two days. It's been *excellent*. At the least, try
using the filter to suck the purported spam to a separate folder...

Re: [WiX-users] wix mailing lists open to public => more spam

2008-04-22 Thread Dana Gutride
I vote to lock non-members out. I would have normally replied to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] of the specific individual anyhow because of many,
many reminders
not to respond to individual people so that we can all benefit from the
conversation.

I stopped reading and responding to e-mails on this thread (with the
exception of this one) because it takes way too long to filter out the
garbage.

Instead of web-based mail services, just use a good, traditional e-mail client
with proper Bayesian spam filter (eg. Thunderbird) and it will eliminate 98-99%
of the spam after the initial learning period. It will also adapt to languages
other than English, it might take slightly more time (a couple of dozen
additional messages) but it will be just fine. You can manually handle the

I'm giving it a try. I'm only testing the subject and not the body
since some valid messages have Chinese text as adverts at the bottom.

2008-04-21 Thread Martin MacPherson
I have been thinking the same. I found a post who suggested the following if
you use gmail:

If you're like me then you get a lot of Russian spam in Gmail. There has
been no way to filter it out, until now. I found that if you create a filter
to search for emails that have the words "в OR и" you will filter out a lot
of the Russian spam.

I'd agree to that.

I might then get back to reading some of the posts and lending some help,
as it is at the moment, there's so much spam, I rarely take a look anymore.

the spam is frustrating, and i'm sure I'm not the only one that almost
ignores the list because of it.
