[news sources]

Costco is no longer carrying Coca-Cola products in its stores
nationwide because of a pricing dispute with the beverage maker.

A Costco executive confirmed the move Monday. The Issaquah, Wash.
based wholesale club operator would not discuss the matter further.

By LAUREN A.E. SCHUKER And SAM SCHECHNER

After days of tense negotiations, "The Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien
signed an agreement early Thursday to part ways with NBC, according to a
person familiar with the situation.

The deal clears the way for rival Jay Leno to reclaim his old show at 11:35
pm. Mr. O'Brien signed the agreement around 1 a.m. Pacific time.

NBC is expected to announce the agreement later on Thursday morning.

While details on the final agreement were unclear, the deal was expected to
include a payout of about $32 million for Mr. O'Brien and about $12 million
for his staff. It is also believed to include a nondisparagement clause,
both for the 46-year-old comedian and NBC. The deal has been said to include
a provision that would bar or limit Mr. OBrien from appearing on other shows
or hosting his own show for a period of time, according to people familiar
with the negotiations.

"In the end, Conan was appreciative of the steps NBC made to take care of
his staff and crew, and decided to supplement the severance they were
getting out of his own pocket," said Gavin Polone, Mr. O'Brien's manager.
"Now he just wants to get back on the air as quickly as possible."

Mr. O'Brien walks away from "The Tonight Show" after almost eight months on
air. His exit comes after NBC hatched a plan to shift Mr. O'Brien's show
back by 30 minutes to make way for Mr. Leno, whose run in primetime has been
marred by muted ratings. Mr. O'Brien argued that "The Tonight Show" wasn't
"The Tonight Show" at 12:05 am and refused to move. NBC has been under
pressure from local television stations who complained that ratings for Mr.
Leno's show at 10 p.m. were poor and damaging the lead-in to their local
news broadcasts at 11 p.m.

Mr. O'Brien has privately also blamed the weak lead-in for his own soft
ratings, but NBC executives had said Mr. O'Brien shared the blame.

Mr. O'Brien took the reins of "The Tonight Show" last June after a 17-year
run by Mr. Leno. NBC had promised Mr. O'Brien the show five years earlier,
as an incentive to sign a new contract with the network.

KGB

Actually KYNO is a 5000 watt station, where Bill Drake and Gene Chenault
invented Boss Radio. So as Ted Knight/Baxter said "it all started at a
5000 watt radio station in Fresno, California".

http://www.observer.com/2010/media/abc-tinkers-idea-midday-news
With the audiences for traditional network news shows steadily
declining, (see the PEJ's State of the News Media 2010) executives at
the broadcast news divisions are continuing to brainstorm new ideas on
how to expand their offerings. For example, ABC News executives,
according to multiple sources, have recently tossed around the idea of
creating a midday news and lifestyle program that would be one part
Good Morning America, one part The View.
Informally, people in the industry have nicknamed the embryonic
project Midday America.
How ABC stations would fit the new show into their daytime line-up
remains unclear--and it's still a strong possibility that the project
will fizzle out long before it ever makes it onto the air.
That said, according to our sources, ABC News executives have had
preliminary discussions with internal and external candidates about
what a midday news show might possibly look like.
Earlier this year, on the eve of severe cost-cutting measures, ABC
News hired former MSNBC correspondent Ashleigh Banfield. When TV
Newser originally broke the news of Ms. Banfield's hiring, an ABC News
spokesperson was vague about what her job responsibilities would be,
saying only that they are "always looking at ways to program news on
the network and we've tested a number of presentations for expanded
news."
Sources tell us that if the afternoon news project ever sees the light
of day, Ms. Banfield will likely be one of the anchors on the new
program. Who might join her remains unclear. But one of the names
being tossed about by TV insiders is Tamron Hall, currently a dayside
anchor at MSNBC.
Typically, broadcast news divisions have stuck to morning, evening,
and primetime programming and left the middle chuck of the day to
syndicated talk shows and soap operas. But recently, NBC News began
experimenting in multiple markets with an early afternoon news show,
made up largely of repurposed news and lifestyle bits culled from
various NBC Universal channels. Now ABC News executives are also
eyeing the network's midriff.
Phyllis McGrady, ABC's senior vice president of creative development,
is overseeing the idea.
An ABC executive with knowledge of the situation downplayed the
likelihood of a green light from the network any time soon. "There are
lots of ideas," said the executive. "There's a big difference between
an idea and developing a program--which can take many years."

"I am thrilled to join the 'Good Morning America' team, and I am thankful
for this opportunity to raise awareness and explore the most important

Hasselbeck was first seen on CBS' "Survivor: The Australian Outback,"
joining "The View" in November 2003. Known for her conservative values,
Hasselbeck has also appeared on FNC.

"Elisabeth brings a very distinctive style and unique perspective that fits

This seems like a good time for Larry to hang up the 'ol suspenders.

I didn't realize I had a well-enough defined profile on linkedin that

Subject: (dead in pool) Paul is dead ... no, not that one!

Although it would be more fitting if his last sporting appearance is in Detroit
during the Stanley Cup playoffs ...

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Paul the Octopus, the tentacled tipster who
fascinated
soccer fans by predicting results at the World Cup, died Tuesday.
Paul had reached the octopus old age of 2 1/2 years and died in his tank on
Tuesday morning at the Sea Life aquarium in the western German city of
Oberhausen, spokeswoman Ariane Vieregge said.
Paul correctly tipped the outcome of all seven of Germany’s games. He made his
predictions by opening the lid of one of two clear plastic boxes, each
containing a mussel and bearing a team flag.
The octopus seemed to be in good shape when he was checked late Monday, but he
did not make it through the night. He died of natural causes, Vieregge said.
“We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed,” Sea
Life manager Stefan Porwoll said in a statement.
The aquarium has not yet decided how best to commemorate their most famous
resident, he said.
“We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds, and
erect a modest permanent shrine,” Porwoll said.
After rising to global prominence during the World Cup in South Africa in June
and July, Paul retired from the predictions business after the final between
Spain and the Netherlands — correctly picking Spain — and returned to his
primary role of intriguing children who attend the aquarium.
The invertebrate was stepping “back from the official oracle business,” Tanja
Munzig, a spokeswoman for the Sea Life, told AP Television News at the time.
“He won’t give any more oracle predictions — either in football, nor in
politics, lifestyle or economy,” she said. “Paul will get back to his former
job, namely making children laugh.”
After his World Cup soothsaying skills were revealed, the English-born Paul was
appointed as an ambassador to England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup. He had
English roots, having been hatched at Weymouth Sea Life Center on England’s
south coast in 2008.
Imitators sprang up all over the world, including Mani the Parakeet in
Singapore
and Lorenzo the Parrot in Hannover, Germany.
The latest was a saltwater crocodile named Dirty Harry, who predicted Spain’s
World Cup final win and called the result of Australia’s general election by
snatching a chicken carcass dangling beneath a caricature of Prime Minister
Julia Gillard.
“El Pulpo Paul” became so popular in Spain that the northwestern Spanish town
of
O Carballino tried to borrow him and made him an “honorary friend.”
Paul, who had an agent, got hundreds of requests to go to Spain. The Madrid Zoo
asked Sea Life if it would be willing to make a deal to bring him in as a
tribute to the Spanish soccer team’s victory, either temporarily or for good.
But the German aquarium turned down that offer, too.
Paul’s name will live on the Greek island of Zakynthos, where a permanent sea
turtle rescue center funded in part by donations generated by the famous
octopus
is being established.

Failing Upward: Breitbart To Be Featured in ABC's 2010 Election Coverage
ctober 29, 2010 5:33 pm ET by Matt Gertz
Media Matters has confirmed that noted propagandist Andrew Breitbart will
rovide analysis for ABC News during their election night coverage.
After Breitbart's BigJournalism.com website reported that Breitbart would
be bringing analysis live from Arizona" for ABC, Media Matters confirmed
is participation in a town hall meeting anchored by ABC's David Muir and
acebook's Randi Zuckerberg that will be featured in the network's coverage.
Asked about Breitbart's history of unethical behavior and misinformation,
BC News' David Ford told Media Matters: "He will be one of many voices on
ur air, including Bill Adair of Politifact. If Andrew Breitbart says
omething that is incorrect, we have other voices to call him on it."
Media figures and outlets from across the board rejected Breitbart's
ace-baiting lies after he smeared former USDA official Shirley Sherrod as a
racist," using as "proof" a heavily edited video of comments she made
uring a March NAACP event that he posted on his site BigGovernment.com.
ABC's Terry Moran subsequently reported that "Breitbart had released only a
lip of her speech, which distorted her real meaning, that she was wrong and
ad learned from her error," while Donna Brazile said that Breitbart "should
pologize" to Sherrod. Both Brazile and Moran will also be featured during
BC's election night coverage.
Breitbart has repeatedly appeared on ABC to explain his false smears. In a
uly appearance on Good Morning America, George Stephanopoulos called out
reitbart for pushing claims about Sherrod that are "clearly not true."
uring Breitbart's joint interview with James O'Keefe on the June 1 edition
f Good Morning America, Stephanopoulos revealed a clip that had been
xcluded from an O'Keefe video posted on Breitbart's website of New Jersey
ensus supervisors that undermined O'Keefe's contention.
Other highlights of Andrew Breitbart's recent career of authoring and
romoting falsehood-laden journalism include:
"Nationwide ACORN child prostitution investigation"
Platform for anti-gay Jennings smears
Breitbart-promoted video falsely accuses Democrats of reconciliation
ypocrisy
Wild accusations over Gladney case
Breitbart's websites make baseless claim that NEA engaged in lawbreaking
Bertha Lewis' nonexistent White House visit
The Maoist Christmas tree ornaments
The ACORN "document dump"
False claims of community organizers "praying" to Obama

I'm calling it (but only here): GOP takes the House by about five seats.
House reverts to Democratic control in 2012, when half the Tea Partiers who
actually thought they could make a difference run afoul of Behnor and Cantor
a collective one too many times and decide not to run for re-election; and
most of the rest are voted out for not changing the country in two years'
time.

GOP pickup of about three in the Senate. People are willing to take a flyer
on crazy for a two-year House term, but the six-year term will give people
pause.

When aggregated from all races across the country, the electorate will be
split 50-50 down party lines. The more out-there the exit poll question, the
more likely it will be to have exactly 20% agreement from those canvassed.

In the end, the news narrative will be, "We were right, but not as right as
we thought we were going to be. What's up with that, voters? Don't you know
you're supposed to play along?"

In other words, the usual.

I guess I am as close to the coast as anyone on the list, but I don't expect
any problems from what the local weather guy is saying. Later this morning,
I'll be at my bridge club, which is on a bluff over looking Highway 1 in
Marina, within yards of the coast. The most concern is for boats tied up in
the harbor bumping together.

Good politics on the President's part. The birthers still aren't going to
believe him... and this is only going to expand the amount of GOP primary
oxygen taken up by a man who may or may not be running for president, but
obviously isn't going to *be* president. Are we all calling him Hair Force

Not so much Twitterspeak as me attempting to tap out an email on the Crackberry

Ex-CNN anchor Sanchez to do color for FIU football
MIAMI (AP) — Florida International University says former CNN anchor Rick
Sanchez will be a radio announcer for the upcoming football season.
FIU announced Wednesday that the Miami native will be the new color analyst on
WMCU-1080 AM. He will join play-by-play man Tony Calatayud.
Sanchez said in a news release that he was honored when FIU asked him to be
part
of the broadcasts. Two of Sanchez’s sons will be attending FIU this fall.
Shortly after graduating from the University of Minnesota, Sanchez began his
television career in Miami at WSVN. CNN fired him last after six years with the
network following a rant in which he called The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart a
bigot.
FIU’s football season begins Sept. 1 against North Texas.

Sure, I[ll take it. Heck, we should all get a number just for being
on this list with some folks who are/were associated with the show.
Like, 3 just for being here, lower for actually E-mailing directly
with someone from the show, etc...

Being the proud owner of a WNN mug? Hmm, maybe 2. Don't know how
your rank changes sharing one with a friend...

Now I'M getting confused.

Now hold on here. The literature prize?

John Perry of Stanford University, USA, for his Theory of Structured
Procrastination, which says: To be a high achiever, always work on something
important, using it as a way to avoid doing something that's even more
important.
REFERENCE: "How to Procrastinate and Still Get Things Done," John Perry,
Chronicle of Higher Education, February 23, 1996. Later republished elsewhere
under the title "Structured Procrastination."

That's a total ripoff of one of Robert Benchley's best essays, in which
he explained his core principle of being so productive: ``Anyone can do any
amount of work, provided it is not the work he is *supposed* to be doing at the
time.'' How about it, Ig Nobels?

There are many comic strips it's hard to believe exist for reasons
other than to be ridiculed.

The Family Circus did have a stretch where it was really funny, and by
every account Bil Keane was a great guy. I'm sorry that he's gone, but he did
do iconic work, and left a lot of people happier, or at least feeling better,
than they otherwise were, and that's not such a bad record, is it?

Re: [DEADPOOL] Scumbag, Interrupted

2012-03-01 Thread Debbie Speer
Candidate for Deadpool slug line of the year.

I'm getting somewhat anguished comments on my Facebook page from conservative
family & friends. Yet even on that repository of crazy, Free Republic, plenty
of Breitbart's "fans" refused to believe his own website - until ABC/AP
reported it.

Re: [PRE-NEWS] So, how was your day?

2012-11-06 Thread Debbie Speer
I voted by mail but took Jeff to the polling place and snagged myself a
sticker.

I was unpleasantly distracted the rest of the day by some nut who decided to
shoot up a workplace about 1/2 mile from my house.

Otherwise, I've got the popcorn popped and just followed Drunk Diane Sawyer on
Twitter.
