Subject: [media] followup to a Q I asked yrs ago about a "Patch" competitor

Since people here know just about everything about news media
(and when we had Tomalhe and, sniff, sniff, and sniff, it
was closer to 99.999%), I had asked if anyone recalled the
announcement about a similar service, but competitor to,
"Patch" with its hyper-local coverage.

No one here recalled it.

Today, I saw a reference in an NPR story discussing "zombie"
(their term) newspapers that pop up in lots of neighborhoods
during elections...

A fascinating story which I suspect many people here already
knew about, but NPR digs in [a].

Anyway, they also were kind enough to verify my recollection:

" Back in 2012, Timpone created a service called Journatic, used briefly
by mainstream newspapers, that relied upon a core of reporters and an
army of freelancers to try to report on real estate sales, school
lunches, city council meetings, high school sports and other events.
Timpone also promised state-of-the art artificial intelligence. The
service's credibility was dinged when This American Life revealed not
just its use of bots but content mill workers far from the regions the
newspapers served. They were often based in Asia, writing under fake
bylines."

A Double-Decker Sightseeing Bus Caught Fire and the Driver Disappeared

A double-decker tour bus went up in flames Wednesday night, apparently while
traveling south on 101 out of the city, and when CHP arrived on the scene the
driver was nowhere to be found.

The fire was reported near the Grand Avenue exit in South San Francisco around
7:30 p.m. Wednesday. As KRON4 reports, the incident caused a serious traffic
backup on southbound 101, first as flames were being extinguished, and then as
two of the four lanes of the freeway were blocked.

Sigh.

https://nypost.com/2021/08/25/lloyd-dobyns-jr-peabody-award-winning-tv-newsman-dead-at-82/

MEBANE, N.C. Lloyd Dobyns Jr., an award-winning NBC News correspondent
who reported from places around the world and who anchored an innovative US
television newscast in the early 1980s, has died, his family said. He was 85.

Ken Dobyns said in a statement that his father died Sunday in Mebane, North
Carolina, northwest of Raleigh. He said his father suffered complications from
a series of strokes.

Dobyns worked for NBC News in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and was known
in America for working with Linda Ellerbee on the late-night news series
NBC News Overnight in 1982 and 1983, according to a statement
released by Ken Dobyns and online with a Raleigh funeral home.

He was a friend, teacher, trouble-maker, and a world-class
journalist, Ellerbee said in the statement. I shall miss him more
than I can say.

I'm pretty sure I'm hallucinating some total recall about CNN

"I regret that I must convey the sad news that Michael O'Hare passed away today. He suffered a heart attack on Sunday and was in a coma until his passing this afternoon."

O'Hare was the original lead actor for the syndicated science fiction series during its first season. He left the role prior to the start of the second season to concentrate on his first love, the stage. O'Hare reprised the role later in the series' run to complete Sinclair's storyline.

In addition to his lead role in "Babylon 5," O'Hare appeared in guest roles in a number of television shows including "One Life to Live," "Trapper John, M.D.," "The Equalizer," "Law Order," "L.A. Law" and "Tales from the Darkside."

On the stage, O'Hare won acclaim in the role of Colonel Jessup in the stage version of "A Few Good Men" before Jack Nicholson made the role familiar to movie audiences in the 1992 motion picture version of the play.

Even stranger - just checked their website - they have no stations in
Massachusetts or Rhode Island, which is where I've seen the billboards. Closest

It's not fundamental presence that's driving the billboards...it's
presence of Harold Camping's Family Radio. If he has a station
nearby, you have a billboard.

There's reportedly one here, over near Kent. Family Radio owns
WCUE/1150 here...oddly enough, the station where I was first heard on
the radio as a teenage weekend host in 1981 (it was a local top 40
station at the time).

It's been a while, but still list worthy, since I don't think it's
been posted. I found out from Time magazine fer crisssakes!

13 Jul 2010

Harvey Pekar, who died on Monday aged 70, was an eloquent American
chronicler of the mundane and often dispiriting events that inevitably
mark most lives; his tales of Everyman were all the more affecting for
being rendered not in heartfelt novels, but in the comic book form
usually reserved for the exploits of superheroes.

Though compared to Chekhov and Dostoevsky, Pekar himself was anything
but a superhero. Even after his autobiographical stories were
transferred to the big screen in the film American Splendor (2003) he
was unable to revel in triumph: I'm too insecure, obsessive and
paranoid for that, his character said in a cartoon.

His themes were anxiety, existential insecurity, and a niggling
certainty that life was out to get him. If there is something to
worry about, my mind has a tendency to worry about it, he once said
in an interview. That can cut two ways. It can really keep you on the
ball but if you worry about every little thing it's not a good use of
time and energy.

where you can see a recording of a burning log, with Christmas music
playing. In fact, they have two other variants: one with light snow

Any interesting developments similar to this in your area? (YULE LOG

Zucker Announces Departure From NBC

Jeff Zucker, the chief executive of NBC Universal, told the
company's employees in an e-mail Friday morning that he will
step down from his position upon the completion of the
takeover of NBC by Comcast.

The fate of Mr. Zucker, the longest-serving senior manager at
NBC, has been the subject of widespread speculation since
Comcast agreed last December to purchase 51 per cent of NBCU
from its long-time corporate owner, General Electric. The
deal is expected to close at the end of the year, following
regulatory approval.

In an interview in NBC's executive offices, Mr. Zucker, who
is 45, said the decision to leave the only employer he has
ever worked for -- a decision he acknowledged he was not his
own choice -- became inevitable after a meeting two weeks ago
with Steve Burke, Comcast's chief operating officer.

wow..a classic case of I thought he was already dead.
--Deb
usual (cr)AP disclaimers apply...

NEW YORK — Mitch Miller, the goateed orchestra leader who asked Americans to
Sing Along With Mitch on television and records, has died at age 99.

His daughter, Margaret Miller Reuther, said Monday that Miller died Saturday
in Lenox Hill Hospital after a short illness.

Miller was a key record executive at Columbia Records in the pre-rock 'n' roll
era, making hits with singers Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Johnny Mathis and
Tony Bennett.

Sing Along With Mitch started as a series of records, then became a popular
NBC show starting in early 1961. Miller's stiff-armed conducting style and
signature goatee became famous.

As a producer and arranger, Miller had misses along with his hits, famously
striking out on projects with Frank Sinatra and a young Aretha Franklin.

The TV show ranked in the top 20 for the 1961-62 season, and soon children
everywhere were parodying Miller's stiff-armed conducting. An all-male chorus
sang old standards, joined by a few female singers, most prominently Leslie
Uggams. Viewers were invited to join in with lyrics superimposed on the screen
and followed with a bouncing ball.

He is an odd-looking man, New York Times critic Brooks Atkinson wrote in
1962. His sharp beard, twinkling eyes, wrinkled forehead and mechanical beat
make him look like a little puppet as he peers hopefully into the camera. By
now most of us are more familiar with his tonsils than with those of our
families.

Atkinson went on to say that as a musician, Miller was first rate, praising
the clean tone of the singing, the clarity of the lyrics, the aptness of the
tempos, the variety and the occasional delicacy of the instrumental
accompaniment.

An accomplished oboist, Miller played in a number of orchestras early in his
career, including one put together in 1934 by George Gershwin. Gershwin was
an unassuming guy, Miller told The New York Times in 1989. I never heard him
raise his voice.

Miller began in the recording business with Mercury Records in the late '40s,
first on the classical side, later with popular music. He then went over to
Columbia Records as head of its popular records division.

Among the stars whose hits he worked on were Clooney, Page, Bennett, Frankie
Laine and Jo Stafford. His decision to have Mathis switch from jazz to lushly
romantic ballads launched the singer as a superstar.

He had a less rewarding collaboration with Sinatra, whose recording of the
novelty song Mama Will Bark, featuring a barking dog, was considered the
nadir of the singer's career. Still, Miller became known for his distinctive
arrangements, such as the use of a harpsichord on Clooney's megahit version of
Come On-a My House. He used dubbing of vocal tracks back when that was
considered exotic.

To me, the art of singing a pop song has always been to sing it very
quietly, Miller said in the book Off the Record: An Oral History of Popular
Music.

The microphone and the amplifier made the popular song what it is — an
intimate one-on-one experience through electronics. It's not like opera or
classical singing. The whole idea is to take a very small thing and make it
big.

Miller and a chorus had a No. 1 hit in 1955 with The Yellow Rose of Texas,
and that led to his sing-along records a few years later.

The years of Miller's biggest successes were also the early years of rock 'n'
roll, and many fans saw his old-fashioned arrangements of standards and folk
favorites as an antidote to the noisy stuff the teens adored. As an executive
at Columbia, Miller would be widely ridiculed for trying to turn a young
Aretha Franklin into a showbiz diva in the tradition of Sophie Tucker.

But Miller was not entirely unsympathetic to rock 'n' roll.

In a 1955 essay in The New York Times magazine, he said the popularity of
rhythm and blues, as he called it, with white teens was part of young people's
natural desire not to conform, a need to be rebellious.

He added: There is a steady — and healthy — breaking down of color barriers
in the United States; perhaps the rhythm-and-blues rage — I am only theorizing
— is another expression of it.

Miller has often been maligned as a maestro of 1950s schlock ... Yet Miller
injected elements of rhythm and blues and country music, however diluted, into
mainstream pop, Ken Emerson wrote in his book Always Magic in the Air.

In the Martin Scorsese documentary on Bob Dylan, No Direction Home, Miller
acknowledged that he was dubious when famed producer John Hammond brought the
nearly unknown Dylan to the staid Columbia label in the early '60s. He was
singing in, you know, this rough-edged voice, Miller said. I will admit I
didn't see the greatness of

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former UCLA basketball coach and Hall of Famer John Wooden is reportedly hospitalized in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles television station KCAL and the Los Angeles Times are reporting Thursday night that the 99-year-old Wooden is in “grave” condition at UCLA Medical Center.
The Times cites an anonymous school source who says Wooden’s health has been an issue in recent weeks and that he was briefly hospitalized about a month ago.
UCLA spokesman Marc Dellins tells The Associated Press that he spoke to a Wooden family member Thursday evening and that the family asked that no other information about Wooden be released.
Family members couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday by the AP.
Wooden led the Bruins to 10 NCAA championships — at one time winning seven in a row — during a 27-year run that ended with his team cutting down the nets one last time in 1975.

Hall of Fame lineman Olsen dies

Merlin Olsen, a Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive lineman who was part of the Los Angeles Rams' "Fearsome Foursome" line of the 1960s, has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 69.

Olsen, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma last year and had been undergoing chemotherapy, died Wednesday night, Utah State assistant athletic media relations director Zach Fisher said.

The burley giant from northern Utah joined Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier on the Rams' storied "Fearsome Foursome" defensive line known for either stopping or knocking backward whatever offenses it faced. The Rams set an NFL record for the fewest yards allowed during a 14-game season in 1968.

Olsen was rookie of the year for the Rams in 1962 and is still the Rams' all-time leader in career tackles with 915. He was named to 14 consecutive Pro Bowls, a string that started his rookie year, and was voted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982.

Olsen was also an established television actor with a role on "Little House on the Prairie," then starring in his own series, "Father Murphy," from 1981 to 1983 and the short-lived "Aaron's Way" in 1988.

Olsen was a consensus All-American at Utah State and won the 1961 Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman. The Rams drafted Olsen third overall in 1962 and he spent the next 15 years with the team before retiring in 1976.

Utah State honored Olsen in December by naming the football field at Romney Stadium "Merlin Olsen Field." Because of his illness, Olsen's alma mater didn't want to wait until football season and made the announcement during halftime of a basketball game.

Olsen was well enough to attend, but did not speak at the event. He stood and smiled as he waved to fans during a standing ovation and chants of "Merlin Olsen!" and "Aggie Legend!"

Utah State is also planning a statue of Olsen at the southeast corner of the stadium.

The Rams also honored Olsen during a game Dec. 20, with a video tribute narrated by Dick Enberg, Olsen's longtime broadcast partner. Olsen did not attend because of his health. His name was already part of the Ring of Fame inside the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis along with other franchise standouts.

He was voted NFC defensive lineman of the year in 1973 and the NFL MVP in 1974.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

940 had a massive signal. It was all-news until just a few years ago and you

Canada's first radio station goes off the air
Mike King, Canwest News Service

MONTREAL -- Canada's first radio station fell silent on Friday night, as
Canadian media and entertainment empire Corus Entertainment Inc., pulled
the plug on two Montreal AM stations.

AM Info690 Montreal and AM940 Montreal's Greatest Hits went off the air
at 7 p.m. local time. Both were deemed unprofitable.

AM940 is a direct descendent of Canada's first radio station, CFCF
originally at the 600 dial on the AM band.

In 1919, the Canadian Marconi Co., launched XWA (Experimental Wireless
Apparatus) in Montreal and it became the first commercial broadcast
radio station in Canada. The name was switched to CFCF in November 1920.

Before the station signals were killed, recordings ran most of the day.
They were made by general managers of the respective stations, thanking
listeners and advertisers, and explaining it was a difficult decision to
close the stations.

We put tremendous effort into trying to find the right format and
content to grow our audience base and operate profitably, but after
years of effort, it is clear these AM stations are not viable, Mario
Cecchini, vice-president of subsidiary Corus Quebec, said in a prepared
statement.

Brian Kenemy, a former vice-president of Corus Quebec's English radio
holdings, said in an interview that he thinks Corus did its best to
hang on as long as they could, looking for affordable formats.

But with most money directed toward FM programming, Mr. Kenemy suggested
that the public company found it too difficult to continue supporting
the struggling stations.

Bourget MNA Maka Kotto, Parti Quebecois culture and communications
critic, argued the closing of Info690 is not good news because it
sounds the death knell of another francophone newsroom in Montreal and
further undermines the media in Quebec.

The decision to cease operations affects eight jobs at Info690 -- three
journalists, two traffic reporters and three operations positions -- but
five of those positions are to be retained.

The Info690 Montreal newsroom, known as CorusNouvelles, will continue
its activities as part of 98.5 FM Montreal.

Two jobs, an on-air host and a technician, are affected at AM940, which
switched from all news to all music in 2008.
