charm
we're barreling down the highway it's late at night
headlights towards us veering is it us or them
we can't tell who's awake one direction or the other
there's no time like in the duel to think
we smashed against the rail just a second in midair
falling and hardly breathing before everything disappears
we've got a truck to the left of us throwing things
first small than larger than screaming slamming against us
we've got a small car we can't fight them off we spin
we slalom crashing over the edge we're in midair
just like in easy rider we're dead along the highway
i'm driving sleeping i'm seeing double seeing lamposts bend
everything filtered and shaky i can't think what's that now
the radio's off the radio's on i don't know the difference
is it you talking or me wait you're not moving
i'm not moving the world turns fast suddenly it's all over
we're rounding a bend furious lightning sudden crack
we're startled slide into the traffic down the embankment
just like in crash we're jammed and careening no stopping us
brakes give out no nothing eighteen wheels coming up fast
no stopping them we're crushed beneath no moving now
motor halts we're hard slammed through the windshield
my throat's cut i can't see anything where are you
we're hurt screaming the car's heaped on top us
night the rain the search dead cell phone we're out of luck
the pedal won't ease up we're out of control skidding
hailstorm shattered glass i swerve too fast
engine light's on gaslight oil light brakelight too
we're bullet hurtling night we've got all day
to get there

Hi - I'm forwarding this to Jon Marshall who might have some sources. By
the way you might enter anon.penet.fi in the google search - there was a
lot of discussion around this -

Fibreculture Journal - Issue 4 - Contagion and the Diseases of Information (fwd)

2005-05-13 Thread Lanny Quarles
-- Forwarded message --
Launch of the Fibreculture Journal - Issue 4 (2005)
The Fibreculture Journal team (http://journal.fibreculture.org) has now put
issue 4 - Contagion and the Diseases of Information - online.
We are very pleased to announce that FCJ's Issue 4 is our first guest edited
issue - edited by Andrew Goffey. It contains articles by the following
authors:
Eugene Thacker - "Living Dead Networks"
Jussi Parikka - "Digital Monsters, Binary Aliens Computer Viruses,
Capitalism and the Flow of Information"
Roberta Buiani - "Marginal Networks: The Virus between Complexity and
Suppression"
Stamatia Portanova - "Rhythmic Parasites: A Virological Analysis of Sound
and Dance"
The Fibreculture Journal is the online journal of the Fibreculture network
of critical Internet research and culture in Australasia. It has grown out
of the 'fibreculture' online mailing list that started in 2001
(http://www.fibreculture.org). Dedicated to critical discussion of the
Internet and new media in relation to IT policy, networked culture, new
media education and arts in an Australasian context, the list now has over
750 subscribers.
The Fibreculture Journal is a peer reviewed, scholarly publication that
extends the research and theoretical discussion of the list culture. The
journal encourages transdisciplinary approaches to thinking about new media
and networked knowledge and practices and seeks to foster experimental and
dissident intellectual endeavours.
During the next year the journal is publishing issues concerning:
Multitudes, Creative Organisation, and the Precarious Condition of
New Media Labour
Mobility, New Social Intensities, and the Coordinates of Digital
Networks
Distributed Aesthetics
Games Networks
New Pedagodies for New Media
Thanks to everyone involved in the Contagion issue - especially Andrew
Goffey, our guest editor, and Lisa Gye who manages the journal, designs the
site, and keeps things running smoothly, the rest of the hard working
editorial committee (Anna Munster, Gillian Fuller, Esther Milne, Ingrid
Richardson, Ned Rossiter, Lisa Gye), all the referees who have given their
time and expertise, the editorial board for their support, myspinach.org for
their ongoing support of Fibreculture, and, last but not least, the authors
who have provided us with such excellent material.

Dow rejects Bhopal solution at shareholder meeting; also, Yes Men hoax bankers (fwd)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DOW REJECTS PROPOSAL TO CLEAN BHOPAL USING FIRST-QUARTER PROFITS
The same man who appeared on BBC World TV last December as a Dow
representative to announce that Dow would finally clean up Bhopal [1]
showed up today at Dow's Annual General Meeting (AGM) to suggest the
same thing to Dow's board of directors and shareholders.
"We made an incredible $1.35 billion this quarter," said "Jude
Finisterra," aka Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men [2]. "But for most of
us, that'll just mean a new set of golf clubs. Let's do something
useful instead - like finally cleaning up the Bhopal plant site, or
funding the new clinic there [3]." Dow Chairman Bill Stavropolous
responded to "Finisterra's" suggestion with a curt dismissal [4].
The Yes Men joined other shareholder groups in Midland, including
Amnesty International, which condemns Dow's lack of response to the
Bhopal crisis as a human rights issue [5].
BANKERS EMBRACE "GOLDEN SKELETON" MASCOT
Two weeks ago at a London banking conference to which they had
accidentally been invited, two "Dow representatives" described a new
Dow computer program that puts a precise financial value on human
life.
The 70 bankers in attendance enthusiastically applauded the lecture,
which described various industrial crimes, including IBM's sale of
technology to the Nazis for use in identifying Jews, as "golden
skeletons in the closet"--i.e. lucrative and therefore acceptable.
Several of the bankers then posed for photos with "Dow Acceptable
Risk" mascot "Gilda, the Golden Skeleton," and signed up for licenses
for the "Acceptable Risk Calculator," which helps businesses determine
the exact point where human casualties will start to cut into profit,
and suggests the best regions on earth to locate ventures with
potentially very high death tolls.
See http://theyesmen.org/hijinks/dow/acceptablerisk.shtml for video
and photos of the event, and http://dowethics.com/risk/ to try out the
"Acceptable Risk Calculator" for yourself.
STATE DEPARTMENT FINDS FAKE DOW WEBSITE USEFUL
Dow may not appreciate the DowEthics.com website--but the US State
Department finds it quite useful, and refers requests for information
about Bhopal to various of its pages: see
http://www.dowethics.com/statedeptfoi/ for an example.
CONTACT: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
NOTES TO EDITORS:
[1] See http://theyesmen.org/hijinks/dow/bhopal2004.shtml
[2] Yes Men Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno had been given one Dow
"proxy" each by actual shareholders, giving them the right to attend
the annual meeting and address the Dow board.
[3] Two weeks ago, the Sambhavna Trust Clinic of Bhopal opened a new
wing to serve the victims whose numbers continue to grow due to
groundwater contamination from the uncleaned plant site. See
http://www.bhopal.org/ for information on how you can contribute.
[4] See http://theyesmen.org/hijinks/dow/2005agm.shtml for complete
statements and responses, including Yes Man Mike Bonanno's feverish,
red-eared tirade in a neck brace.

Thai Calendar

2005-05-13 Thread Alan Sondheim
The Thai Calendar is from the time of Buddha. My Netscape in OS9 won't let
me cut and paste, anyway - it's the Thai solar or Suriyakati calendar -
"The year however is counted from the Buddhist Era (B.E.) which is 543
years earlier than the Christian Era (A.D.)." - Alan
So here is a split from an historical figure.
Can one say there are three types of calendars -
0 -> X, in which the origin only goes forward (i.e. from creation)
-X -> 0 -> X, in which an historical figure marks a zero point origin in
historical time which is registered in terms of negative and positive
integers
0 -> A(n) B(n') C(n'') in which emperor or other eras A, B, C, are locally
enumerated by n, n', n'' - note in this case, there's a presumed origin
which may or may not be of the first or second type above (i.e. an emperor
may be at the origin of a mythical creation, or an emperor can be only the
delineation of the beginning of imperial time)
I'm not sure where this gets us/me, whomever - but I'm fascinated by these
systems, and the relation they have to monotheisms and/or historical
lineages - Alan

Why I am narrow.

2005-05-13 Thread Alan Sondheim
Why I am narrow.
I am narrow, minded; it is difficult to follow any stream, much less any
particular stream, of thought. On an analog/digital forum I have been
reading, there was already a worry expressed, take the division and run
with it as if something were being said/done. It's on the edge/verge of
nonsense. To be strict with oneself is to mine the sememe, abandon it in
large part. What's left is practically non-existent. For example, issues
of raster: increase the digital raster to the infinitely, small and create
an identity map - that seems simple enough. But then quantum effects come
into play - in fact the wave equation collapse enters here as well. Back
out and try the other - the digital to the infinitely large. Then one has
monotheism, totality. Try from the analog side - nothing occurs. Surely
one integrates the digital to arrive at the analogic, but to begin with
the analogic? To differentiate it? This might map, but then there is still
the question of the raster. The raster? The question of the wave equation
again. Try the abacus. Base 1: counting, enumeration, matching one-to-one.
Base infinite: each number a symbol, memorization of ideograms (English
spelling, kanji). But given infinite memory in the latter, zero memory in
the former, they are both procedural; it's just that in the latter,
nothing carries.
This goes on and on. So far so good, these are abacuses, objects counted,
not too much out of line. If metaphor's involved, it's indexical. But then
perhaps I bring in libido (Dionysian, analogic) and superego (Apollonian,
digital), and I'm off and running. Before long I'm tied in Lacan's knots,
a slippage that's always productive - how can it knot be? Language begins
to curl, everything proceeds with a poetics of the real, and I'm lost, I'm
lost...

Re: ....A./D./ the phenomenology analog/digital discussion

2005-05-13 Thread Alan Sondheim
I would love to talk with your father. I'm hoping to meet someone in
California in the physics department who will work with me on this stuff;
I'm inadequate.
Re monotheism - the point wasn't the list of human demarcations, but the
presence of individuals who are originators. Islam's Mohammed is a clear
example, as is Jesus. In both cases, historical time dates from them.
That's the point I'm making. And that time moves both forward and back-
wards from them - as opposed to the time, say, of Judaism which goes back
to an 'origin' of the world - there's no negative time, i.e. the origin
was the creation of the world. With Jesus, time is both before and after,
and as such, the year 0 is defined and thereby AD and BC, or CE, and BCE,
however one wants to define it. And with this zero-point, there's a
temporal collapse in the sense that the origin defined is an Origin, i.e.
critical point. Time, which is generally continuous and appears cyclical,
has this _moment_ from which it ascends and descends.
I'm not sure what sorts of chronology other cultures reference in general.
In Japan, it's emperor's reigns (traditionally), and these enumerated in
terms of year, i.e. year 3 of the Meiji period. (I forget the complexity.)
In Rome I think it was similar? I'm not sure. I'm reading a book, The
Manuals of Buddhism by Ledi Sayadaw, published in Bangkok; the date reads
2521/1978. This might relate to the birth of the Buddha? I'm not sure -
- Alan

re monotheism i wd think all monothesims are linear--as they are the
narrative of the relationships of a people with their God--so there are
human figures along the way who play prominent roles--Noah, Abraham,
Moses etc--the prophets are also human figures--who help keep the
narrative going so to speak--by creating an anticipation for what is to
come--so that when the event does occur, it takes its proper place in the
narrative--i understand that it is not based on one human as point A--but
at same time it is linear, narrativethe originating narrative in
which Jesus and Mohammed are seen as being figures in also--
one of the great creative periods in western thoght and science was in
