Your video card is too new to be supported in Red Hat 8.0.

I recommend that you get an XFree86 CVS snapshot or wait for
XFree86 v4.3 which should be available next month.

If you are desparate, you could try using the vesa driver instead
of the i810 driver.

If you started it you can kill -HUP the Xserver even if you aren't root.
(Not actually killing it, just asking it to die, but it obeys).

I can see a UNIX screen at the display by changing configurations.

I set screensavers and DPMS off.
But the display suddenly becomes black when we use Linux-PC about 50 minutes.
This is one ploblem.

And ,
if I move the mouse soon , UNIX screen recovers normaly.
But if I don't move the mouse or I don't push any key on the key board about one hour ,

[XFree86] Thinkpad A31 and Radeon Mobility 7500

2003-02-18 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

I have a problem on my IBM TP A31 running debian/unstable 2.4.20. Most
(but not all!!) OpenGL commands dont work. Just "black screen" effect.
GL_LINES and GL_POINTS work for example, but GL_TRIANGLES and more
complex commands won't work.

Is it something to do with libGL* stuff? So will newer XFree version help?

What's the stage of development for Radeon 7500 in current CVS version?

Thanks a lot,
Dominik

When I pass through a text mode (ctrl+alt+F1, for example), XFree86
*plante* after some seconds. And I can't restart(?) startx
any longer."

My severely limited French-Danish dictionary is no help with plante.
Unless you are talking about planting and gardening. I suppose it's argot
for crashing.

Please write in English the next time. Why should it be easier for others
to read your French than for you to write English? The onus is on you to
make yourself understandable.

I could mutter something here about typical French arrogance which we see
plenty of in the EU but I won't.

[XFree86] Minimal build source required?

2003-02-18 Thread Matthias Nispel
Hi out there,

I'd like to get some information what's the minimum of source I need to
build a working Xserver. I looked around on the X website and may have
missed something. So far, I've downloaded the xc/programs/Xserver/ tree
from CVS repository.

Want to test some modification I made to the chips driver.
If successful, I'll submit a patch.
On the target machine I now run Debian woody. It's X environment is
pretty old (4.1.x).

Just give me apointer to the information I might need, please.

Thanks in Advance,

No the problem is that when my program try to draw something in the window

event that the communication with the xserver is broken instead of a big

You need the whole of the xc tree.
I get the cvs "packages":
cvs-base
cvs-src
xc-all
from cvsup.xfree86.org
but xc-all is probably sufficient

One solution would be to type
chmod 4711 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
but that is a really dangerous command to use.
Please understand it and think why the X server binary lost the
"suid root" bit.
There are good arguments saying that it shouldn't be necessary to
fix it this way.

Great, thanks for testing. Have you also tried a DRI client? Even
glxinfo crashed the server for someone else.

Probably the cursor blending changes the color key around the cursor so
the video isn't visible there.

That's why the driver wants to force HW cursor for Xv and DRI windows.

Yes, this is an xlibmesa3-gl problem (which has been reported several
times to the Debian BTS), the code is probably too old to build
correctly with the sid toolchain.

http://penguinppc.org/~daniels/README or
http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots/README.Debian should work.

The DRI CVS tree is cut down to only build the X server, libGL and the
DRI drivers. You could start from there.

X crashes at startup: the screen remains black, and the keyboard doesn't
answer any longer, so I must reboot my computer.

The XServer works smoothly when VideoRam is set to 4096 or less.

Setting to 8192 or larger variable can result in X11 crash when the two following
conditions are fulfuilled:
A) User switches to another console(Ctrl-Alt-Fx)
B) An X11 client attempts to update display(such as rendering a web page), the
following error is omitted:

Re: [XFree86] Thinkpad A31 and Radeon Mobility 7500

2003-02-18 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

Thanks a lot for hints. Here is the report:

1) I installed xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk and xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk
from http://people.debian.org/~daenzer/dri-trunk-sid/. I didnt find the
mentioned xlibmesa3-dri-trunk.

2) I installed drm-trunk-module-src package, but havent built it - I
have no idea about it nor about kernel-package...

OK, I rebooted and... new login window

I CANNOT LOGIN EVEN AS ROOT

Switched to console, logged normally (uf, worked) and did startx. So
I will get it fixed somehow myself, no problem.

glxgears reported first over 1000 fps but also:

libGL error: InitDriver failed

and screwing up a bit my machine (display is slooow, windows are messed
up a bit).

Starting it the second time reported 100 fps only consistent with
other GL apps, which also are very slow The error is there, apps
are working, but very slow.

What is wrong? Is it is this drm-trunk-module-src that I didnt built? If
yes, then please, one word how to build it...

thank you!
Dominik

(but not all!!) OpenGL commands dont work. Just "black screen" effect.
GL_LINES and GL_POINTS work for example, but GL_TRIANGLES and more
complex commands won't work.

Is it something to do with libGL* stuff? So will newer XFree version help?

Yes, this is an xlibmesa3-gl problem (which has been reported several
times to the Debian BTS), the code is probably too old to build
correctly with the sid toolchain.

http://penguinppc.org/~daniels/README or
http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots/README.Debian should work.

What's the stage of development for Radeon 7500 in current CVS version?

It's very well supported.

2003-02-18 Thread Graham Campbell
I upgraded to Redhat 8.0 and plaympeg stopped working. It gives the

C'est l'argo. :-)

It's slang, plante = "to crash" in this context

glxinfo doesn't crash the server, however, I don't believe DRI is
supported on R300 chipsets yet:

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

so I'm stuck at 2D for the time being.

Hi,

I just discovered that on knoppix debian-on-cd all works fine and very

So what's going on here, they use even older version that I HAD (I used
your patches)...? So maybe the problem can be fixed more elegantly
without the mesa patches? What am I doing wrong? Now, after the patches
I get very slow results and the windows system slows down...

Das war auch was ich geglaubt hatte. Ich war aber nicht ganz sicher.

(just to ram down the point to Sylvain that using national languages in an

extent South Africa and India)

[XFree86] XFree86 4.2.99 hangs Solaris 9 on Ultra 10 upon quitting

2003-02-18 Thread Dan
Hello,

I have XFree86 4.2.99-901, compiled with GCC 3.2.1, running on
Solaris 9 12/02 on an Ultra 10 using the built-in PGX24 video,
which is based on ATI's Mach64. It build, starts, and runs
fine, however upon quitting X the entire machine hangs. No
keyboard, no mouse, no Stop-A, and no response to pings.

Since the entire machine is freezing, I'm making an assumption
that it might be due to the kernel-mode aperture module. That
was also built with GCC 3.2.1 with the -m64 flag.

There is one line in /var/log/XFree86.0.log that stands out
(mostly because it beeps):

(WW) INVALID IO ALLOCATION b: 0xff00 e: 0x
correcting

Could that be related?

Here are /var/log/XFree86.0.log and /etc/X11/XF86Config.

Thanks for any suggestions..

Re: [XFree86] Thinkpad A31 and Radeon Mobility 7500

2003-02-18 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

The story goes on:

I very much apologize for my ignorance on kernel-package stuff. I just
compiled the modules myself, and brute-force copied radeon.o into my
/lib/modules. IT WORKS! No more errors, no unstabilities (well,
still I cant login, I have to kill login window, login via console and
then startx).

However, I get 20% less acceleration than with (older?) knoppix XFree...
glxgears give exactly 1kfps (0.1 before), while knoppix reports 1.2kfps.
It is not disaster, but I am just ambitious: why did it all happen, and
how/if could it have been avoided with normal sid xfree... and still,
why is knoppix faster?

thanks a lot for getting me on the right track
Dominik

Re: [XFree86] Redhat vs plaympeg error message

2003-02-18 Thread Mark Vojkovich
Minor opcode 19 is XvShmPutImage. BadAlloc on that request usually
means there's not enough video ram for the overlay buffers. Maybe if
you don't use the DRI (which, if I recall correctly, steals video ram
for 3D) you will have enough memory?

[XFree86] problems with APM and OpenGL

2003-02-18 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

I am using debian/unstable on IBM TH A31 ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, and
have installed the latest xfree86 from the unofficial debian packages,
as advised.

1) APM doesnt work correctly anymore hanging my machine after sleep. It
*WAS* working before, compiled in the kernel (apm module wouldnt work).

2) OpenGL finally work, but still not 100%. I would say implementation
improved from 10% to 90%. What I noticed still doesnt work is the point
size (GL_POINT_SIZE, if I recall).

any ideas would be appreciated,
bye
Dominik

[XFree86] overdrive problem w/XF86 4.2.0, intel 845G, philips 180P2 LCD

2003-02-18 Thread reece
I'm having trouble getting a new flat panel display to work with
linux and I'd appreciate tips (or at least moral support).

The setup:
- RedHat 8.0, XFree86 4.2.0, kernel 2.4.20
- display configured with RedHat's redhat-config-xfree86
- video card: Intel 845 (Compaq Evo D510 onboard)
  /proc/pci says:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82845G/GL
[Brookdale-G] Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 1).
identified as Intel 845 by redhat-config-xfree86, which selected the
  i810 driver
- monitor: Philips 180P2 TFT LCD
redhat-config-xfree86 DDC probe incorrectly identifies this as a 180B
and suggests HSync 30-82 (kHz), and VSync 56-76 (Hz). (Compare with
  monitor's error, below, requesting 1280x1024@60Hz).

The problem:
The monitor complains "This is 85HZ overdrive, change computer display
input to 1280x1024@60Hz". Windows was able to drive the monitor at those
dimensions & refresh, but I can't make linux do so.

I've tried:
I've tried many combinations of H & V sync, resolution, and depth
(restarting X each time). I get the same message every time, as though my
changes weren't doing anything. I've changed settings via
redhat-config-xfree86 and by editing XF86Config directly. I suspect I
need a custom modeline and tried to cobble a few together, but that's
really out of my league.

I've also browsed xfree86.org to for i810 info. The 4.2.99.903 changelog
implies that the i810 driver previously doesn't recognize the 845G. Any
ideas whether this is really my problem?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Julia,

Find the font paths in your XF86Config file and double check those
against what is on your system.

[XFree86] Command Not Found when running Startx

2003-02-18 Thread Kevin B. Payne

Debian GNU Storm Linux (2.2.16) on an
AMD 300 CPU + IBM compatible system.

During the process of fighting to remove the old
Xserver 3.3.? I accidently lost the links or something that is necessary to
allow my system to see where the Xserver's programs are. I can startx by hand by
going to /usr/X11R6/bin and typing ./startx but then the program complians that
xauth and xinit which are both found in the same folder aren't
there...
IE: It also says, "command not found" for
those files and won't even make an attempt at starting.

I have seen the Xserver running by using ./XFree86
-xf86config /etc/X11/XF86Config
But even then it doesn't give me access to The
Window Manager ( twm ) which is also in the same folder...

How can I tell Linux that these files are
executable and add them to the list of available files that can be run from
prompt?
Right now I cannot see startx from anywhere on the
system without typing the full path

Thanks in advance.

You should specify which _version_ of Red Hat's distribution you are
using (e.g. 7.2, 7.3, 8.0). It makes it easier to help you.

Do I understand correctly that _before_ you ran an "up2date" against the
Red Hat Network your XFree86 ran properly? If so do you remember which
packages were updated? You can see this by "cat /var/log/up2date" (or
"cat /var/log/up2date.1" if /var/log/up2date is empty).

>
> "Fatal server error:
>could not open default font 'fixed'
>.."

This tells you that either the font called "fixed" is not installed on
your system or that the _font_server_ is not running. It is most likely
that the font server (which is called "xfs" is not running). You can
use "/sbin/service xfs status" to see if it is running. Or you can try
"ps -ax | grep xfs"). If it seems that xfs is _not_ running then you
can start it this way (on Red Hat 8.0) "/sbin/service xfs start". Now,
try to start XFree86. If that works then make the change permanent by
"/sbin/chkconfig --levels 35 xfs on".

Looking at the log it appears that you are using an "Nvidia" driver.
Probably your kernel was updated by your last "up2date" and this has
broken dependencies between the DRM module and the kernel. You probably
have to rebuild the nvidia driver against your new version of the
kernel. An alternative simpler way to do this (if I am correct) is to
boot using the older kernel-version.

It sounds as though your PATH doesn't contain the appropriate
directories:

[ofeeley@ars ofeeley]$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/ofeeley/bin

edit whatever files Storm Linux uses to set the PATH environment

What do you mean "doesn't give me access" ? Do you mean that if you do
an "exec twm" it doesn't run?

>

Files are marked executable in most *NIX filesystems by having the "x"
bit flipped on by chmod. You need to make sure that you only make files
executable by specific users for security reasons. (It strikes me that
you may be better starting off with a different distro than Storm Linux,
or at the very least spending a bit of time with some manuals, HOWTOs
(http://www.tldp.org) and books).

Re: [XFree86] Command Not Found when running Startx

2003-02-18 Thread Kevin B. Payne
Thank you for your input. The problem was caused by this distro. The default
working folder for the Xfree files was not the standard that the new
Installer automatically installes to... Therefore the link in /etc/profile
was not correct.

Now I amd getting "Unable to open wrapper config file
/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config" and at that point it crashes with Error number 111
"Connection refused"

Any ideas?

If you're still using my packages, have you read
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk/README.Debian ?

Keep in mind though that my packages are bleeding edge DRI CVS
snapshots, you may prefer to use Daniel Stone's 4.2.99.x packages.

Not sure. First of all, are you sure you haven't mixed up the 'frames in
5 seconds' and FPS values? I ask because it's an easy mistake, and 1200
frames in 5 seconds would be 440 fps, which is about what I'd expect
from 4.2.x .

Something else to keep in mind is that people have been bitten by BIOS
CPU throttling 'features', which might only trigger with newer DRI
components because the use of interrupts decreases CPU usage (set
RADEON_NO_IRQS=1 to test this).

Here's a list of the major components having an influence on glxgears
framerate, roughly sorted by relevance:

  * how up to date radeon_dri.so is (the newer the better)
  * how up to date the DRM (radeon.o kernel module) is (the newer
the better)
  * whether page flipping (Option "EnablePageFlip", only in 4.2.99.x
or later) is enabled (page flipping is faster)
  * the AGP transfer rate (beware, anything more than 1x may be
unstable) and whether AGP fast writes (Option "AGPFastWrite")
are enabled (may again be unstable)

YMMV depending on the status of each of these.

For your reference, I get 1400-1500 fps on this PowerBook G4/667 with a
Radeon 7500 Mobility running at AGP 4x with fast writes using my
packages.

Weither ATI Rage and geforce keep the problem. It seems to happen every time that the

[XFree86] X11 crashing system with ATI Radeon 7500 QW...

2003-02-18 Thread Gary Greene
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I've got a little problem with XFree's beta release 4.2.99. When I logout, or
whenever the card blanks the screen (in X mode) my Linux system hangs and
refuses to come out of the sinal off status. This happens only when DRI is
enabled. with DRI off the card response normally. However, there goes my 3D
Hardware support at that time:(

At this time I am forced to "zap" X to log in as another user, or since I've
got X set up as a SysV-styled service, I have to run /etc/init.d/dm stop then
restart it. This is a little aggrivating since I recently bought my ATI AIW
Radeon 7500 because of the 3D support and the TV tuning capabilities.

I'll be more than happy to share my hardware and software info with whomever
may be able to isolate/troubleshoot the cause.

[XFree86] bug or problem with ASUSA7V + ATI Xpert2000

2003-02-18 Thread spirisi
dear xfree86ists,
I'm spiri and I write you from Italy.
I 'd have liked very much to not disturb you, but I'd like to expose my X
problem...
First of all, my HW configuration (in brief):
Asus A7V KT133;
386MB RAM;
Athlon ThB 700;
SoundBlaster Live!;
ATI Xpert2000 32MB.
Actually I'm running Slackware8.1 and Woody (and XP...), but I also used
RedHat and Mandrake.
So...every OS I boot, I usually cannot starx (winXP: -> no ATI, but VGA
standard).
I upgraded Asus BIOS to 1012 (if I'm not wrong...) and tried every bios cfg!
But nothing!
### I only could startx when reboot my pc! ###
(I really do not understand such a thing!).
I going to buy a new graphics-card if that is the problem (as I think).
Could you suggest my something about it?
It is a known problem-bug of ATI/ASUS or both?
I've searched by Saint Google but found a few guys with similar problems...
I hope my XFree.log-attachments could help in someway...
I thank you in advance !!!
Bye spiri

[XFree86] Problem booting into GUI

2003-02-18 Thread Mell Anico
I am using Red Hat linux v7.3 and I am currently
having problem booting my Linux server in GUI (using
KDM). I tried reboot a number of times and still did
not come up with the GUI login screen. This problem
started when the print servers hosted in this linux
box stop responding and I decided to reboot. Then I
cannot boot in GUI mode, although the server is still
functioning as I can telnet into it. Can you please
help us in restoring the GUI boot in our Linux server?
What we can do to resolve??

Thanks and regards.
