The last few line of your log are self explanatory. Check you fonts. If
you are using RedHat these are in directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts

If you get a RedHat distribution, make that your fonts are in the directory
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts.
Then run the command:
mkfontdir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/your_font_directory whose font path cannot
be found.
restart or start xfs:
/etc/init.d/xfs

[XFree86] nsc TV output

2003-07-22 Thread angelom
Hi,
I ask you some help about nsc driver. I have a Geode based set top box
(SC1200) with only the SCART interface for TV output. Originally equipped
with a boot flash with linux and customized drivers. I've installed
successfully a Debian distro, upgraded at Xfree86 4.3 and kernel to 2.4.21.
The problem is: xfree start correctly, (no error in the log) and also the
windows manager startup music play fine, but I dont see any output with the
nsc driver.
I tried setting various driver options ("TV Output" and "TV" "PAL-720x576")
without any result. After making startx command the console output disappear
and also exiting from X it remain invisible.
The vesa driver works well, of course very very slow.

Any suggestion ?

thank's

Angelo

[XFree86] Problems with rotated characters

2003-07-22 Thread michels
Hello,

I'm not sure if this is a bug in XFree. In my data plotting library
DISLIN, I'm drawing rotated characters of an X11 font with a rotation
matrix specified in the pixelsize field of an XLFD font. This is
working on many UNIX and Linux systems, but there seems to be
problems now on some RedHat 9 systems with LCD or TFT screens. The
escapment of characters is not correctly returned in the attributes
field in the per-character XCharStruct metrics, the position of
rotated characters seems to be wrong, and for example: characters of
a font with the rotation matrix [-20 0 0 -20] are plotted with the angle
0 instead of 180 degrees.

I could reproduce this phenomenon on the following system:

 System: RedHat 9, XFree86-4.3.0-2
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX, Driver: nv
 Terminal: Dell 1900FP

Was there a corresponding bug report for XFree that I have overseen?

[XFree86] Free86 Version 4.3.99.8

2003-07-22 Thread Alf C Stockton
I have just compiled and installed XFree86 Version 4.3.99.8 on my Dell
Inspiron 2600 and when I run startx I get :-

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ startx
Using authority file /home/alf/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /home/alf/.Xauthority

Until I hit Ctrl-C, XFree86 gets no further. However if I hit Ctrl-C, XFree86
runs fine.

What is going on ? What is .Xauthority and why do I need it ?

Is it possible that this has anything to do with inetv6 as I have also seen the
following at the beginning of the /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to determine socket type for inetv6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inetv6/puppypad:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inetv6

This btw is running on Linux Slackware 9.0 kernel 2.4.20.

BTW2 I installed this to fix the Alt-Ctrl-Fn crash I was getting and it seems to
have achieved that.

[XFree86] "Dynamic mouse" under XFree86?

2003-07-22 Thread Christoph Stracke
Hello list,

does anybody know, if it is possible to get a "dynamic mouse" under XFree86?
The xset-tool (IMHO) only provides two different speeds, one for slow move
and one for fast. But what I am looking for, is a really "dynamic"
(non-linear) mouse, i.e. something like a (user-defined) built-in v^2 or
v^3 function.
I know, that my old Atari-ST had a tool which provided this. When I moved the
mouse very slow, I needed about 50cm to go over the screen, when I moved it
fast, I needed only 3-4cm, but not with a "jump" at a certain speed...
(If it is not possible yet - wouldn't it be a nice idea for a future
XFree-Version? :-))
Please apologize my ugly english ;-)

Thank You and bye,

Christoph

Microsoft is not the answer. It's the question and the answer is NO.

Re: [XFree86] bug

2003-07-22 Thread Mark Vojkovich
 Specificially, what is the problem?

I don't see any fatal error in that log file. It looks like you
don't have the DRI's kernel module installed (drm), but I suspect
you don't actually need that and the dri warnings would go away
if you didn't load the "dri" module in the XF86Config file.

Mark.

2003-07-22 Thread Egbert Eich
Non of the three things you are seeing are related.

1. Your startx creates an .Xauthority for you.
2. You are seeing the error message because you appearantly don't have
   ipv6.
3. You need to check yourself where the start process hangs.
I'd suggest you start with 'startx'.
Hint: to trace a shell script you can add: 'set -x'

[XFree86] S3 trio32 chipset support for debian Linux

2003-07-22 Thread Tom Loveday

Is there support in Xfree86 V4.3.0 for the s3 trio32 chip?  I have an HP pavilion I am trying to
set up as a debian Linux box and it seems that nothing I do can make the
xserver operate.  I do not need all
of the acceleration offered by the chip set, but I would like the xserver to
work.  The best I have gotten is no
available modes. Using xserver-s3 and a panasync s15 monitor

had the same prob with Trio64, have you tried using xfree 3.3.6?

nasty sol'n, that, i know, I eventually jammed an old ATI in a spare PCI
slot.

the latest CVS of xfree says it supports more s3trio chips.

A start would be to post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log so we can
see what driver, modes, etc... it's trying to use.

Therefore please ignore this thread and accept my apologises for not fully

[XFree86] no screens found

2003-07-22 Thread Joel
I'm trying to set up a clean version of Debian, and for the life of me I
can't figure out why X won't work.

Attached it the output log of what happens when I try and run startx, as
well as my XF86Config.

For what it's worth, I've got an s3 virge for video, a SYS 1510P for a
monitor (flatscreen; does 1024x768), I'm running 2.4.21 (custom built),
and debian unstable. Debian stable had exactly the same problem though.
I tried going to the (unsupported) 4.3 for debian and got the same error,
so I downgraded again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hello !
I have some problem configuring my Radeon9000

May be this Card works with driver 'vesa'
only ?
Help me please.

as I can see your monitor needs a horizontal sync frequency between 30
and 60 kHz; and a vertical refresh between 70 and 90 Hz.
If this is not correct you can try to "release" the requirements, and,
for example, set up a HorizSync 30-70 and VertRefresh 55-90.

*** NOTE: this can DESTROY your display!! ***

if something strange happens kill immediately X with the zap
keys.(ctrl-alt-BS)
Another thing you can try, is changing the modelines; you can also tune
uf them after, using xvidtune (also here you can destroy your display)

I think this is Debian related; also I have the same thing, but it
doesn't affect the working of X

still strange.

This seems to be about par for the course with XFree86does anyone
know of an alternative? Even if its not a window-ing system, just
something to use to allow a bit more graphical interface? I've
re-installed 5 times now, and I either get "ServerLayout" --bad section
heading, when the XFreeConfig file is itself made from it's own config
program, or, as I've tried just about every server they have, the one
which you're supposedly not having to configure, the frame-buffer one,
simply states: device not found: /dev/fb0 (no, not /dev/fd0, but
/dev/fb0). The oddest thing is that one of the configuration makers,
xf86cfg, runs perfectly fine- I can see the sceen correctly, the mouse
works, keyboard's OK, card+monitor- both goodyet it won't let me use
that setup for the actual running of XFree86!
I give up... I've heard of a "mc" app, is that similar? I really had my
heart set on XWindows (that was one of my major reasons for getting
linux in the first place), but no matter what I do (or read- I've been
all through the HOWTO's, FAQ's, sites, linux documention project, etc,
etc, ) it's just not going to run.

[XFree86] Flatscreens - Portrait -> Landscape Mode when changing Res...

2003-07-22 Thread Gareth
I'd really appreciate some help trying to get my new Flatscreen to
automatically change its mode (Landscape / portrait) when the resolution is
one that best suits that mode.  i dont mind hardcoding which resolutions jump
into portrait mode, in fact, I expect that is the only way I can do it.

I scoured the readme that came with the XF86 download, but cant make anything
out for definite.  I think that it will be possible, using perhaps multiple
displays??? or mode lines but nothing is specifically mentioned, and I
dont wish to break the monitor - only had it a day!

Im not on the mailing list (due to 14.4Kpbs modem - yes I know I should get a
better inet connection! :o) ), so would REALLY appreciate it if people could
include this email address when posting any replies.

Many many thanks in advance!!!

Gareth.

[XFree86] ATI Radeon IGP 320M

2003-07-22 Thread Clay Stuckey
Does anyone have any information on if ATI Radeon IGP 320M support has been
included with any development release? I saw a post somewhere that said it
would be coming out in the next full release scheduled sometime late this
year. I have seen some posts to manual mods to the XF86config file for older
laptops. I have a Compaq Presario 2175us. Any other help is GREATLY
appreciated.

Just for interest. Is this the same as the Radeon 9600 Mobility ?

Is there any way to get this card working under XFree86 ?

Or is there any way to get the Radeon 9600 working under Linux ?

Have you tried Driver "ati"? This card is supposed to be supported in
XFree 4.3, but I can't read any of the files you attached to find out
what you're running, because they are not in plain text format (but, I'm
sure someone else can).

2003-07-22 Thread Jesse Hutton
I don't suppose that the Matrox mga drivers run on those boxes,
because they just release new ones for version 4.3...There has also been
some work done on the Matrox framebuffer in the 2.5 series. If that's
not a production box, you might give that a try (I'm running 2.6.0-test1
on my desktop with zero problems...not to mention the fact that it's a
much nicer user experience :o), or maybe there exist some patches for
2.4.x.

You appear to have edited your XF86Config file with an editor
that does DOS-style linefeeds instead of Unix ones. You need to
retype the line that features "EndSection^M" with at unix-based text
editor. Or perhaps running dos2unix on the file is adequate if
you have dos2unix on your system.

Hi,

Try using Driver "s3virge" in the Device section for your video card.
Then remove Device "Accel" from the screen section.

[XFree86] Re: XFree86 on IBM RS/6000 B50 with Matrox G200

2003-07-22 Thread Rene Rebe
Hi,

In the case s.o is interested the XFree86.0.log is attached.

I also connected a OSD 17" CRT to the box instead of the old 21" BNC
one and so was able to determin that the video mode does not
change. So the colored noise might come that the pixel data is
generated using the new clock - but the DAC still runs at the old
rate?

When X is killed using a remote login I see that new framebuffer
screen refreshes show up - but the screen fills very quickly with that
colored noise again ...

Aany ideas?

Re: [XFree86] ATI Radeon IGP 320M

2003-07-22 Thread Torsten Giebl
Hello !

Just for interest. Is this the same as the Radeon 9600 Mobility ?

Is there any way to get this card working under XFree86 ?
( I mean any other way than using the SVGA xserver :-)

Or is there any way to get the Radeon 9600 working under Linux ?

THANKS!

Try sending your log file of a crash and your config file (and perhaps the
output of lspci) so someone can help you out (plain text format, please).

2003-07-22 Thread Jesse Hutton
Hi,

Add these lines to the Section "Files" part of your /etc/X11/XF86Config
file (the listing for unix/:7100):

FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
(you may want these also)
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"

and/or restart xfs, your font server (adding the lines above is a fail
proof way of dealing with the problem).

[XFree86] XFree Memory Problem

2003-07-22 Thread Miles Roper
Hi,

I'm having a really weird XFree86 problem. I'm using XFree 4.3 and running
on it Citrix ICA Version 7.0

The ICA client connects to a windows Citrix server.

If I open up a document in word through the ICAClient with a bitmap picture
the memory requirements of XFree86 seem to increase dramatically, but the
wfica process stays the same. If I close the file the memory returns to
normal.

ie before document:
 Memory
 1952 root 3612 S XFree86 :1 -depth 16

after document:
  Memory
 1952 root 4836 S XFree86 :1

if I open up 12 documents the machine runs out of memory and closes down the
X server. However, if I re-establish the connection to the server, which
restores the 5 documents, I can open up another 5 before the client runs out
of memory again, and so on and so it.

It only seems to be with certain documents as others seem to open up fine,
the ones that seem effected are ones with a scanned in signature which I
suspect is a BMP image embedded in the document.

I've tried limiting the XFree86 server by using the following switches but
it doesn't make any difference:

XFree86 :1 -depth 16 -ld 4096 -ls 1024

The client is 4.3.0.1, kernel version 2.4.20, ICA Client Version 7.0
Server is Metraframe XP Version 1, Features release 3, Service Pack 3

Ok, I'm stumped any help would be great.

Cheers

Miles

Re: [XFree86] Gentoo Linux CD

2003-07-22 Thread Peter Nehem

Hi,
I tryed out this distribution. If you are trying
to install from the CD, try "nofb" as the kernel to run instead of just pressing
enter, which is the same as typing in "Gentoo". This will start the setup in
"text mode" while it's not pretty it should work. Then you can worry about video
card problems later.

The "introduction of the Terminate_Server event" was done primarily for
the purpose of allowing you to "specify the Zap sequence to use". However,
it is not specified in the XF86Config file, but in the XKB keymaps.

No, everything is Ok.

6) "By this time XFree log file should say "dri enabled". Open a

Glxgears gives me the following:

HERE is where I get that wierd error of "libGL error: InitDriver failed"

Same as #6, the problem is in number 7 with the GL library, but I dont
know what to do, I been looking so much time for the answer.

You need to send a few things to this list:

1) Your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file
2) config file -- /etc/X11/XF86Config
3) output from lspci (just for completeness)

plain text format please

XFree86 Version 4.3.0 (Debian 4.3.0)
Linux 2.4.20-ac2 i686 [ELF]

I just got the same result as with trying the driver radeon. Still wierd
"libGL error: InitDriver failed" message with any application.
