my Radeon 8500 log

2004-02-21 Thread Fred Heitkamp
It was suggested I post my log to the list. OpenGL programs from
xscreensaver lock up my Linux hard.

The -bpp option is no longer supported.
Use -depth to set the color depth, and use -fbbpp if you really
need to force a non-default framebuffer (hardware) pixel format.

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and patches submitted
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs).

lockups

2004-02-19 Thread Fred Heitkamp
I've complained about lockups in the past.
I have uninstalled xscreensaver 4.14 and my PC has not locked up for two
days so far. What worries me is that a poorly writen or buggy program can
lock up my machine hard so that only a hard reset will cure it. I am
using:

I have a Radeon 8500 that also locks up hard. I enabled sysrq in my

using 2.6.3-rc3, but all other kernels I tried lockup too. It appears the
lockup is in the dri somewhere as the machine runs for days when no GUI
has been used. I suspect that the problem may be in the OpenGL somewhere
because most of the time the machine is frozen on a OpenGL xscreensaver.
I haven't noticed a particular one though. What I have been doing is
using the GUI for a while and then changing back to the console so the
machine does not lock up, but I have noticed that the machine is becoming
unstable even without the GUI running and a reboot is still necessary
eventually. What I mean is that running the GUI eventually makes the
machine unstable even if it is not allowed to actually lockup. I have
tried various window managers and it does not seem to matter which one,
eventually all have locked up when left on for several hours. I am going
to try uninstalling xscreensaver and leaving the GUI up to see what
happens.

I've got a Radeon 7000 that locks up hard on a linux 2.4.23. no logs are
 written requiring power cycle.
It locks in Quake3 in less that 7 minutes most times. some xscreensaver
work fine, but havn't tried them all

Sid It is much more stable than the 901 release for me. And i had only one lockup
so far (and i was'nt able to trace the error back to xfree since linux
2.6.0 also had some problems). It was a hard lockup, so couldn't do anything
 in finding the error.

I have a Radeon 8500, X11 4.3.99.902, and kernel 2.6.0 all on a dual
Athlon. There seems to be a problem when I run gnome 2.4 and
xscreensaver. The computer locks up hard and cannot be accessed even via a
remote terminal. Most of the lockups seem to occur when an OpenGL
screensaver is running. There were lockups in the past with some of the
2.6.0-test? versions, but it was always possible to login remotely and
shutdown/reboot etc. Only way to get back on is to hit the reset. I have
compiled and installed kernel 2.6.1. I'll see what happens with that.

It's a merge conflict. (It's a good idea to check the output of cvs up
for lines starting with a capital C for conflict)

I deleted my xfree cvs and reacquired a new set of sources. The sources
compiled fine and now my DRI is working. I got 1907 fps on my Radeon 8500
with glxgears. Still checking the stability issue. Hopefully that is
resolved now too. Thanks for everyones help. I've appended the glxinfo
output, if anyone is curious.

This means the DRI is fine as far as the X server and the kernel are

It can also mean problems in DRI and OpenGL.

I had to remove several of the screen savers from the random list because
they would lock up my system quite reliably.

You might want to check which specific screen savers are running when the
 system locks.

I implemented some of the suggestions that folks on the list were kind
enough to give and hopefully got a little closer to the core issue. I
made sure that I did not have any old Mesa/GL libraries in the

having a machine frozen after several hours could mean
a thermal problem. this can inlcude even overclocked CPUs
or instable RAM or anything else on the bus or the grafics.

I suppose I could have a hardware problem, since my PC is a couple years
old now. However, I can leave the same computer just running a 2.4.x
kernel for days with no problems. Would the redesigned kernel
2.6.x bang the hardware so much more; going beyond that of kernel 2.4.x?

Current XFree86 CVS is based on Mesa 5.0.x, it seems to be picking up
 the wrong libGL?

The libOSMesa libraries as of Nov 22 seems to be the following on my

  (**) RADEON(0): Option AGPMode 4

Have you tried lower AGP modes?

No but there doesn't seem to be a problem with the 2.4.x kernels running
on mode 4. I will lower the mode and try disabling backing store and see
what happens.

  (**) RADEON(0): Option BackingStore
  (**) RADEON(0): Backing store enabled

BTW, do you really want to use backing store? I doubt it causes your
problems, but it may hurt performance for local clients.

Audio in X11

2003-09-10 Thread Fred Heitkamp
I was wondering. Was there ever an effort to make a
network independent audio extension for X11? (forgive
my terminology if it's wrong.) For example, if I am
logged on from a remote terminal and want to play an
MP3 from the distant machine on the remote terminal,
is this possible? Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I didn't
see one while googling.

Search google for Dreamworks SKG stories involving Linux. You'll
 be surprised.

I will do that. But even if you count every cluster node
running Linux rendering movie and TV frames as a separate

For consumer desktop that's true. There is one potential business
case in the professional desktop market. SGI's, HP's and Sun's old
workstation customers have been moving over to Linux. All the film
studios are using Linux, for instance. The volume is small but the
margins on the professional cards is high so there is a chance that
it might actually make money some day. If it weren't for this
potential in the professional market, NVIDIA probably wouldn't have
any binary Linux drivers. The real target of those drivers is the
NVIDIA Quadro line not the GeForce line.

It is NOT the server market, it is the grafics render farming
and the related grafics editing at the desks of the movie industry.

I honestly don't know for a fact that the server market is
bigger than the movie renderfarm market. I am just speculating
that it is base on casual reading of trade websites and periodicals.
Just because there are more general internet using businesses than
movie businesses.

Servers don't need high performance 3D or 2D graphics. In fact
many servers are probably not administered with a GUI at all.

I don't know how many CAD/CAM applications are done using Linux
either, but probably much less than Windows and Solaris/SGI.

I am not trying to argue against high performance and complete
ATI or Nvidia opensource drivers. I was just playing devils
advocate.

Linux is my favorite OS. It would be perfect for me if the
graphics and multimedia capabilities were equal or better
than Windows.

Fred, You can try defining in host.def: #define CcCmd /usr/bin/gcc or
whatever is appropriate for your system. No guarantee it'll work
however,as I've never had to use it personally. Good luck. TTYL --

I tried that as well and it does not work either. Some makefiles have CC
hard coded as '/usr/bin/cc'

I did a make distclean on the tree and all the Makefiles with
'/usr/bin/cc' and '/usr/bin/cpp' hard coded went away though
there are still a couple of Imakefiles with 'cc' hardcoded.
i.e. programs/Xserver/os/Imakefile and programs/rgb/Imakefile
and /usr/bin/cpp is defined in linux.cf.

It appears most of the paths must come from imakemdep.h
and imake.c.

Re: [XFree86] where is /usr/bin/cc being set?

2003-02-23 Thread Fred Heitkamp
Note I know I could just make a symbolic link to get rid of the error,
but that's not my question.

The top level Makefile refers to $(CC), and I guess your version of
make defines it to
/usr/bin/cc. An alternative to creating the symlink is to run 'make
CC=your-cc-command World', or find out how to change make's default (if
possible).

I tried setting CC and BOOTSTRAPCFLAGS and neither gets rid of
the problem completely. I also have a problem with /usr/bin/cpp
being hard coded in various places.

I complain about this because I often use different compiler
versions. I would rather just set the PATH to point to the
directiry of the compiler in use for cpp, gcc, etc.

I see in the imake.c and imakemdep.h that /usr/bin/cpp is
being hard-coded into the executables. Also many of the
Makefiles, presumably they are being constructed via imake,
contain this hard-coded path. Maybe someone better informed
than me can comment on this.

[XFree86] problem on powermac G4 dualie

2003-01-12 Thread Fred Heitkamp
I have a powermac G4 dual 533 snakebite with GForce 2MX. I am using Linux
pmac 2.4.21-pre2 #2 SMP Thu Jan 2 07:32:33 EST 2003 ppc unknown. The last
couple CVS compiles of XFree with gcc (GCC) 3.2.2 20021212 (Debian
prerelease) just cause one CPU to be used up. The screen just goes black
and there is no X Window.
XFree86 Version 4.2.99.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 6 January 2003

X Applications run remotely seem to work though.

Anyone else had this or similar problem?

off without a hitch the make install will sometimes fail.

To be able to easily switch back to erlier versions I always build
RPMs from the CVS build. The specfile was based on the original SuSE
packages but then heavily modified. With these RPM I was able to rewind
the server packages to a date where the vt-switch did work, but left the
 libraries at an up-todate version.

My system uses Debian apt/dpkg though it is not a Debian system.
I also have RPM installed but I have gotten used to using the Debian
tools and prefer using them. Most of the time I use the checkinstall
program to install programs built from sources. On occasion I will
install a packages from Debian if I can't get the sources or can't get
the sources to compile myself. Since my machine is not identified as a
Debian system the dependencies are usually screwed up and I end up
using dpkg with force dependences. I have used this Linux system
like this for years and I know what I have installed so this works
*for me*.
Now having said all that is there an easy way to make debian packages
from the Xfree CVS sources? I assume the folks who normally build
the offical XFree binaries must have a buch of scripts or something.

[Newbie]Where is the ATI Radeeon ???

2002-11-25 Thread Fred Heitkamp

I compiled XFree from sources. I think
you will need the latest of the 4.2.x series
for X because the Radeon and especially the
9000 are fairly new.

In order to make the radeon work see if you
have the directory /usr/X11R6/:

./lib/modules/dri/radeon_dri.so
./lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o

I also have this in my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.

Section Device
Identifier Radeon 8500
VendorName ATI
Driver radeon
Option AGPMode 4
#VideoRam 32768
VideoRam65536
#VideoRam4096
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Lastly I think you may need DRI support for
the radeon in your kernel.

[Xpert]installing xfree

2002-11-20 Thread Fred Heitkamp
I compiled a new X from CVS yesterday. I have been
playing with it a little and it looks like the fonts
rendering is much better than the version I had been
using, which is two or three months old.

First is it better to just do a 'make install' over
the old version or just untar the new version over
the old? Any suggestions welcome.

Also as far as the font rendering: Should I have
seen some improvements or am I crazy?

Lastly, I copied the fonts from my Windows 98SE
partition to Linux. How do I make sure that X can
use those?

Thanks!

IIRC, on RedHat xdm dies if the X server misbehaves, and init restarts
xdm. On Debian, xdm retries the X server, and if X mis-behaves
often enough* xdm ignores that X session.
For me, I'm not sure whether the X server completed with the wrong
return code, or DDC on DVI meant that the xdm gave up waiting for
 the server to restart.

I guess I forgot to add I am not using xdm or gdm. I boot
to a console and startx. I currently am using icewm.
When I said I log out I meant I use the logout menu on
icewm. This should return me to the text console. This
is where I get the black screen. I can't switch consoles
or anything like that because the display/console is hosed.

I've tried compiling and running the latest xmcd on Linux
with OpenMotif and I get the following error.
I am using gcc-3.1.1 on Linux pc1 2.4.19-rc5 #36 SMP,
GNU assembler 2.12.90 20020501, XFree86 Version 4.2.99.1.
I have a Radeon 8500.
The precompiled binary from the XMCD web page works.

I also compiled a number of other Motif apps, just
to test my Motif install and they all work mostly.

My OpenMotif was probably compiled against an older
version of XFree86, probably 4.2.0 and probably using
an older gcc, like version 3.0.

Anyone have an idea of where I could start looking in
order to solve this problem?

I hope this is not too far off topic.

Here I am replying to myself..oh well.

More info on this problem. I restored my old X setup:
XFree86 Version 4.2.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 18 January 2002

and Xine now works. So something in the new setup
got hosed.

only, if I stop the movie a still picture (frame)
appears. I tried installing a new version of X and

Sounds like two problems. The blue bar is probably the color key
which shouldn't be visible. Also, it sounds like the overlay data
is being read from the wrong place.

Which graphics, which drivers?

I had this problem (with Xine) when I was using a rather old box (200MHz
Pentium-MMX). Sound was OK, but gfx were missing.

What's the speed of your machine?

I have a ASUS A7M266-D dual proc athlon with one processor;
a 1600+ MP. I believe the processor is 1.4GHz. I have
a Radeon 8500 graphics card.

Funny but I was playing a DVD just a couple weeks ago
on this machine and it worked OK.

It seems some fiddling I did must have broke it.
Unfortunately, I can remember what.

[Xpert]gatos ati.2 code

2002-04-19 Thread Fred Heitkamp

Is DRI now supposed to be working for the Radeon 8500?

When compiling the latest ati.2 from gatos I get the
following errors. I've done some grepping and can't
seem to find where these are defined.

radeon_dri.c: In function `RADEONDRIInitBuffers':
radeon_dri.c:539: `DRM_RADEON_BACK' undeclared (first use in this
function)
radeon_dri.c:539: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
radeon_dri.c:539: for each function it appears in.)
radeon_dri.c:539: `DRM_RADEON_DEPTH' undeclared (first use in this
function)
make: *** [radeon_dri.o] Error 1
