message said to email to this address, so here goes...hoping someone
can tell me what I am doing wrong or what info more I can provide to
help get my X running :)

window. Once it stops working it never starts again.

That sounds like a driver issue. You might want to look through
the cvs history for suspicious changes. This one looks suspicious:

I think I may have a culprit. Or maybe it's just a coincidence. But after
restarting X and having the overlay working it only failed after I played
quake.

I run two X servers, my main one on vt8 with three monitors including one at
1920x1440, and a low memory one on vt7 with the one monitor at 800x600. The
latter has DRI enabled but the former does not.

I was able to switch between them and use the overlay on either one without
problems, the overlay worked on both X servers. It was only when I played
quake, and only when I played it for an extended period of time that the
overlay stopped working on the main X server.

The weird thing is that it still works fine on the 800x600 DRI-enabled X
server. But I just get a blue window on the main X server.

2005-03-07 Thread Greg Stark
Mark Vojkovich [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I'm assuming by not working, it looks like it's working from a client
point of view, but the overlay just never shows.

Well, I imagine that's the case. Or else mplayer is just failing to detect the
failure. Is there a canonical test program that would be guaranteed to be
handling error handling properly?

It's conceivable that overlay fifo underflow in the chip could cause the
 overlay to stop functioning.

Well I don't see any errors logged about fifo underflow.

This is why I'm not a hardware guy. When you have no visibility to what's
going on how are you supposed to debug anything?

I've seen it happen on some NVIDIA cards. If this is happening, the
 OverclockMem option might help.

Apps are supposed to grab the port when they use it. If another app
tries to use it, they will fail to access the grabbed port.

Yeah, if I try to run a second mplayer I get:

Xv: could not grab port 61
Could not find free Xvideo port - maybe another process is already using it.

So that's not exactly it.

I noticed this in the mga(4) man page:

   Option TexturedVideo boolean
This has XvImage support use the texture engine rather than the
video overlay. This option is only supported by G200 and later
chips, and only at 16 and 32 bits per pixel. Default: off.

Does this allow for more than a single port? There's no reason the card would
be limited to a single texture after all, it handles hundreds during a quake
game.

The description says:

  85. Fix for Xv resolution loss problem with Matrox cards (Michael Lampe).

but, if I recall correctly, some of the resolution loss issues
with Matrox cards were because the video scaler didn't have enough
bandwidth to display the full resolution. Reclaiming the resolution
in bandwidth challenging situations probably results in fifo underflows
which, at least on the NVIDIA cards that I'm familiar with, would
produce results like you are describing.

I don't follow that at all. What do you mean by resolution loss and
reclaiming the resolution?

Looking at that change it seems like it just removed a bunch of functionality
including the accelerated 2x horizontal zoom and didn't replace it at all.
It also changed a couple magic constants.

But I don't see how this code would make it work sometimes and not other
times. Specifically how it would work fine for a while and then stop working
completely.

It seems more like a higher level state corruption. Like maybe it still things
some other client is connected to the Xv port even though nothing is any more.

Is there some way to query to see what X thinks is using the Xv scaler? Or
whatever other state is being kept? xvinfo doesn't seem to change output at
all when mplayer is running.

Re: Patch to TWM to make NoGrabServer affect resize as well as move

 is over that window.

Yeah, I actually figured that out after I sent the message.

Personally, while the rubber band artifacts are bad, the grabbed server is
worse. There is no opaque resize option in twm. I would welcome an option to
do opaque resizes or use some other method for avoiding the artifacts, but in
the meantime I would really like to get away without the grabs.

It's not like NoGrabServer is the default. Anyone enabling it can make the
decision for themselves if they prefer the visual correctness of the grab but
the practical problems of frozen clients versus the practical benefits of
avoiding the grab but the minor problems it causes.

Patch to TWM to make NoGrabServer affect resize as well as move

2004-10-07 Thread Greg Stark
I got annoyed at twm grabbing the server whenever I resized windows. I mean
seriously annoyed. It freezes videos playing in other windows, even other
screens. This plays havoc with streaming network connections.

So I looked at the code. It doesn't seem to me that there's anything more
special about resizing than moving or the other cases where the grab can be
disabled by the user.

Is there some danger I'm unaware of that makes it absolutely critical to grab
the server during the resize? Or is twm just doing it specially to annoy me.

I tried the following patch and everything seems to be working fine. I haven't
run into any problems at all from it. And my video now plays smoothly while
I'm resizing windows. I'm much happier now.

[Conversations get confusing when you put answers before the questions]

Thanks for your help. I've been playing more attention to when this problem
occurs and when it doesn't. In fact it's more subtle than I realized at first.

When I first start up the X server dpms does manage to shut down all three
monitors whenever it screensaves.

When I run mplayer it turns off screen saving. I guess that's a good thing
since it does suck when the screen saver kicks in in the middle of a movie.
And the mouse and keyboard are likely to be idle for a long time while the
movie is playing.

When mplayer finishes it reenables dpms. But from that point on things don't
work properly any more. Sometimes nothing screen saves (perhaps when mplayer
crashes?). Then even when I try to turn on screen saving with xset I can't get
it to work on the non-primary monitors. Even if I run xset force off on one
of the secondary screens it's still just the primary monitor that turns off.

[XFree86] Configure no mouse

2004-06-10 Thread Greg Vickers
Hi all,
I was wondering if it is possible to configure X to start without no mouse?
I am using a Debian box to display information on a screen in a stand-alone
type fashion with no kb/mouse attached to this computer.

I found this configuration item in XF86Config-4:
Section ServerFlags
Option AllowMouseOpenFail true
EndSection
so X will start without a mouse plugged into the computer, but I would like
X to start with out a mouse cursor being displayed on the screen.

Is there a way of moving the mouse cursor so it is off the screen, or
telling X to start and not display a mouse cursor?

Thanks,

[XFree86] Re: Xterm issue

2004-06-04 Thread Greg Fossheim

Help!

I would like to first compliment everyone on the
state of the software and its stability. As I have been working with this
system since X10 days, things are pretty cool. Now I understand that new
features are great and maximizing available capabilities is great, but HOW THE
HELL DO YOU TURN OFF COLOR SUPPORT FOR XTERM? Im using
XFree86 4.3.99.5(179) from RedHats Fedora distribution and using a TERM
type of xterm. If I wanted color I would have used xterm-color
or something. I have tried using xterm-mono but that doesnt
work either. As a matter of fact I have tried every term type I could
think of, and except for dumb, bold characters are showing as
yellow on white. This makes MAN pages kind of hard to read. Since
colored text is for pussies anyway, all I want is to turn the damn color features
OFF.

Can you point me in the right direction?

Sincerely,

Greg Fossheim

registers specifically for that. The MGA driver in particular seems to do
*something* when you say SyncOnGreen.

You're saying no standard PC card has SyncOnGreen as an option?

[XFree86] SyncOnGreen for Sun 1662b fixed resolution monitor?

2004-05-25 Thread Greg Stark
Which drivers and cards are capable of sync on green and what do I need to
achieve it?

I've put the ``Option SyncOnGreen'' in the Monitor section. Do I need a
separate csync option somewhere?

Browsing the source it seems not every driver implements this. I have a choice
of three graphics cards:

:02:0b.0 Display controller: Texas Instruments TVP4010 [Permedia] (rev 01)
:02:0a.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage I/II 215GT
[Mach64 GT] (rev 41)
:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400 AGP (rev 04)

From the source it looks like the only one that actually implements
SyncOnGreen is the MGA driver. That kind of sucks because I really don't want
to give up the good graphics card for my main monitor.

Is there any way to get sync on green using either of these other cards? Maybe
a jumper? What other inexpensive cards that I might find in a bargain bin are
capable of sync-on-green?

This is all to try and get a Sun 1662b monitor working. I think I have a few
reasonable modelines constructed from the available information on the net.
I'm not entirely clear how to allocate time between the sync pulse and front
and back porches though.

In case anyone else out there is curious, here are the modelines I have so far:

[XFree86] Spurious button press/release event with imps2 scroll mouse.

2004-03-16 Thread Greg Brigley
After starting kdrive Xfbdev with a ps/2 scroll mouse, I get a button press
and button release event for button 3 the first time I move the mouse. This
is consistently repeatable, and I have seen it happen with X 4.3 and 4.4,
compiled on two different toolchains, running on Linux 2.2 and 2.4, on two
distinct PCs. I haven't seen it happen with non-kdrive X.

Based on the mice I have on hand, it doesn't happen with usb mice, or any non
scroll mouse. It does happen with a Logitech ps/2 scroll mouse, a Microsoft
optical wheel mouse, and a no-name ps/2 scroll mouse. Also, the same
Microsoft optical wheel mouse does not show this behaviour when used via USB
instead.

Has anyone else seen this?

In case it helps, here's some output from xev. (The button press and button
release events are at the end. )

Hi Mark,

I suspect that you are right - I think MetaCity is grabbing it, and causing
my grab to crash. Is it easy to install another window manager, and which
one would you recommend?

Thanks,

This is not my area of expertise, but the man page and X-server code
suggest that this only happens when this button is already grabbed by
another client. That means either you double grab in your app using
separate display connections, or another app is grabbing it. Have you tried
running with a different window manager?

Mark.

[XFree86] different resolutions in xinerama?

2003-12-29 Thread Greg . Froese
Is it possible to run different resolutions on different screens with
xinerama.
I have a 17 monitor and a 14 monitor, but I'm not crazy about running
1024x768 on the 17 and the 14 doesn't support more than 1024x768.
Is it possible to run the 17 at 1280x1024 (was using this resolution
prior to setting up xinerama) and have the 14 at 1024x768 or even
800x600?

2003-12-06 Thread Greg Davey

When using the nvidia driver opengl is provided through that driver not xfree(mesa). Try reinstalling the xfree driver module following the instruction on nvidia's website. Then run glxinfo to insure that nvidia's libgl is actually providing the opengl functionality. If not then there is possibly a conflicting set of libraries installed on your system.

A sample output of glxinfo is following:

Re: [I18n] locale issues under linux

2003-11-13 Thread Greg Davey

That is one of the many strange things that have gotten me stumped. The locale.alias file that was installed in the system by make install is empty, as are the locale.dir and compose.dir files. The locale I am using is en_US. With the program I wrote I tested: en_US, en_CA, ja_JP, en_AU, C, en, and a few others. All returned OS supports locale. Xlib does not support locale.
So it seems that nls is working in my glibc, just not XLib.

Reality is but a brief respite between my fantasies.

Re: [I18n] locale issues under linux

2003-11-13 Thread Greg Davey

Ok, I seem to have solved my problem. As pointed out by Jungshik, my locale.alias file was in need of editing.
Now the problem I have is; Why did the Makefile install empty files into my X11-dir/lib/X11/locale directory? On top of that all subdirectories contain empty compose.dir, XLC_LOCALE, and XI18N_OBJS. Is there a fix to this problem? Am I stuck editing the Imakefile myself? Finally, has anybody else run into this problem?

Again, thank you for any help.

[I18n] locale issues under linux

2003-11-12 Thread Greg Davey

I recently sent the following e-mail to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailling list but received no reply, perhaps this list is more suited for the topic.

I have been attempting to compile Xfree from cvs tag xf-4_3-branch. Everything compiles fine, but I keep getting the same three errors when running any program that attempts to modify the locale.

1)Locale not supported by Xlib, setting locale to 'C'
2)X locale modifiers not supported, using default

and possibly unrelated to the first two

3)Failed to open input method

I wrote a small program to test the system:

/*begin*/
#include stdio.h

}else{

}
return 0;
}/*end*/

Running the program a number of times with different locales, I received the same result. My system supports the locale, but xlib does not.

Is there some setup step I am missing, perhaps an environment variable that I have not set or a modules I am not loading? An RPM of 4.2.1 worked fine, is there some patch that must be applied?

I am searching through lcWrap.c right now to try and determine where the problem is originating, but I seem to be stuck. I have attached my XFree86.log file and my site.def file. I would send the make World log file but it is rather large(6MB). If it is needed I will send it.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Re: [XFree86] Help Required.

2003-11-08 Thread Greg Davey

Use NVIDIA's driver, while not being open source(bad), it does provide a much higher frame rate than the xfree driver(good). The driver is available on NVIDIA's website along with fairly simple install instructions. Remeber to download both the kernel module(NVIDIA_kernel) and the xfree86 glx module(NVIDIA_GLX). It should work with your current xfree install.

Remeber this is only an alternative to upgrading xfree and using the newer nv driver. Maybe someday nvidia will release the source for the drivers.

[XFree86] GLINT bug

2003-10-27 Thread Greg Stark

I have my third monitor working now with the GLINT driver but I've noticed a
strange screen corruption bug. It seems often i end up with purple bits on the
screen. It seems to be due to some specific optimization as it affects
specific areas of specific windows repeatably. And it seems to be sensitive to
the precise location on the screen as sometimes simply moving the window a few
pixels over makes it not go away.

For example in the gimp the little triangle in the ruler that moves with the
mouse pointer leaves purple turds behind as it moves around. Also, the icons
in the gimp toolbox have purple bits in them. And the scroll bars in gnomeicu
message windows are purple.

Here are a couple screenshots -- one of them is actually of a gimp window with
a screenshot of a gimp toolbox inside it.

Here is a couple interesting excerpts from the XFree86 log. The last time I
tried to post an entire XFree86 log it got bounced due to being too large.

[XFree86] Multiple monitors in cyclic layout?

2003-10-26 Thread Greg Stark
I have three monitors running now. Two are in 800x600 and one in 1600x1200.
Ideally I want them configured something like:

/--\/--\
|  ||  |
|  ||  |
\--/| |
/--\| |
|  ||  |
|  ||  |
\--/\--/

Making it possible to go from any screen to any other screen.

However the best I seem to be able to do is something like this:

/--\
| |
| |
\--/
/ \/--\
|  ||  |
|  ||  |
\--/| |
| |
| |
| |
\--/

In which it's impossible to go from the upper 800x600 screen to the main
1600x1200 screen and vice versa.

with a layout like this:

Screen Default Screen
Screen Second Screen LeftOf Default Screen
Screen Third Screen Above Second Screen

Is it possible to do what I want or does the multi-screen handling only link
the screens together in one big acyclic chain?

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-22-10 17:55 ---

Why the hell is this assigned to me?

I have no idea, that sounds like an internal problem to me. I just noted a
reproducable problem and reported it.

And why do you include your config and log
 file instead of attaching it?

I'm sorry, I had no idea that I needed to follow a specific etiquette for
attaching files for a bug to be taken seriously.

The only way one could help is by knowing where it is
spinning. Since both your report and the one you point
to mention the Nvidia binary driver it is quite likely
 the cause of the problem.

I reported that this occurred with the free nv driver also, which is your
driver yes? And I was merely pointing to the other thread to establish the
fact that this issue was reproduceable, as all bug reports should. So tell
me how to tell you where it is spinning instead of yelling at me for not
 telling you.

We do not support this driver.

No shit. Thanks for the update.

Please report your problem to Nvidia.

I am not convinced that it is the nvidia driver.

You also may want to let the Xserver load fonts itself without
using a font server. This has solved several problems, too.

I'll try it.

I would like to help but your rudeness is incredibly offputting. It makes me
want to tell you to F*** off and die instead of follow-up with more useful
information. I guess what they say about the XFree86 developers is nuts on.

[XFree86] kdrive/tinyx and DPMS screen blanking

2003-10-17 Thread Greg Brigley
Hi

I've just swiched from a regular X server to tinyx/kdrive (xfbdev on linux
2.2.18, neomagic video), and I can't get DPMS to work like before.

At a minimum, I want to be able to call xset dpms force off and have the
backlight in my lcd turn off to prolong its life.

Here's what I get:
# xset dpms force off
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 137 (DPMS)
Minor opcode of failed request: 6 (DPMSForceLevel)
Serial number of failed request: 9
Current serial number in output stream: 11

#xset -q
snip
DPMS (Energy Star):
Display is not capable of DPMS
snip

I get the same results with an Xvesa kdrive server.

Have I done something wrong, or is this not supposed to work with kdrive?

If not, is there some other way to achieve the same thing, maybe at the
framebuffer driver level?

Thanks,
Greg

The second will crash that loop. I forget if the termiminating NUL is
required for WM_CLASS or not, but in any case you have to be robust

So, uh, I confess I'm a bit at a loss. This isn't my code and I've never seen

The interface seems, uh, strange to me at this distance. What format is the

I forget to mention last time: I'm running Mac os 10.2.6 on a 800 mghz,

I've tried to install xfree86 by Every method I can find on the web

Installed xfree manually, via Fink Commander, and via the command line.
I've removed Everything and started over from scratch Three times now.
And no matter if I double-click on the X, or try launching from the
command line, I get the Same short list of replies Every time.

The last timed X worked was when I installed it manually from

It has always seemed to me that problem resolution without the post-mortem

Far too many people and organizations are in a hurry to dispose of the
problem without looking for the cause. Like treating the symptoms and
ignoring the disease. Perhaps effective in the short run, but costly in

Just libpng and zlib is not enough. You must have libpng-devel and
zlib-devel. The -devel versions of packages contain the header files AND
the libraries. The versions without -devel contain obly the libraries.

I got it workin! Starts every time now. Looks wonderful.

As I mentioned above I started over with a fresh install. I selected all
of the system and gnome development things and left off a bunch of stuff I
wasn't ready to play with. Install went fine. Built installed the
2.4.20 Kernel (with changes previously discussed about) Browsed to make
sure that zlib and libpng were available. Built and installed the XFree86
cvs branch 4.2.99.3. Compiled with no problems and installed with no
problems. [Drat those missing files :( ] Then I built the i830.o module
as per David Dawes instructions on 845G and installed so it could be
automatically found.

Rebooted. Made sure i830 was showing up in lsmod (not exactly sure when I
did this after the boot however) - it was there. Started X and ...

Nothing - same thing - blank screen. Gurr!

I was going back into the XF86Config to switch the driver to vesa when it
occurred to me to check again the horizontal and vertical refresh rates for
my monitor. I pulled out the documents that I had gotten from the web when
I first started this and sure enough, 30-75 kHz is what it said. Just what
I had. But then I looked at another document for the same monitor and
noted it said 31.5-64 kHz. Humm. OK, not much different but let's
see. Changed and rebooted and startx and ...

Gnome!

Hot Dawg!

OK, why did I end up on the wrong path all this time? startx never started
correctly after the install. I searched the net and found that I need the
845 driver, but in the meantime could use the vesa driver. Changing to the
vesa driver did result in the startx starting Gnome and looked
reasonable. It just wouldn't restart. Couldn't switch consoles, and
standby killed it. That seemed to rule out refresh rate issues. And the
installation program (anaconda) ran beautifully in high color and
resolution - it must have gotten the settings right. No?

No. It didn't. At least I have a variation of the EV700 Gateway monitor
with a lower refresh rate than the install program picked.

Bummer, all of this time, all of you good folk's help, patience, and
effort, just because of a mis-direction. Crum.

I want to say
THANK Y'ALL,
THANK Y'ALL,
THANK Y'ALL.

I'm sorry I wasted so much of your time.

But, IT WORKS NOW!!!

It even goes to stand-by, powers down, and wakes up. I can switch consoles
and back. I can stop and restart without a reboot.

Hot Dawg!

[XFree86] startx problems.

2003-01-16 Thread Greg Julius
(This is a re-send of a previous post).

I have been having a ton of problems with my RH 8.0 associated with my i845
chipset on my motherboard.

I have put in the 4.2.20 kernel - just fine now. I installed the XFree86
4.2.99.3 binaries and things stopped.

I just did a XFree86 -configure and put the resulting configuration file in
/etc/X11/XF86Config. I restarted the system. I did a startx. Nothing but
blank screen. Edited the config file and replaced the i810 driver with
vesa. restarted the system again. I did a startx. This time I got
something. I'm not sure what it was, but it wasn't my pretty interface
before the binary install. It a desktop for lack of a better term. It
had a clock (hard to read, but analog format). It had two terminal windows
with dark backgrounds and one terminal window with a light
background. exiting the light one exits everything.

1) How do I get my pretty interface back (GNOME)? I tried switchdesk
GNOME, but I got the same stuff.

2) Must I always reboot after I stop a startx? If I don't I just get a
blank screen.

Please help! Any answer to any of these questions will be welcome.
-g

To Do: Get GNOME back. Get startx to restart without a reboot. Get
correct drivers in place.

Re: [XFree86] startx problems.

2003-01-16 Thread Greg Julius

Thanks again Peter, here are the responses,

Tsk, tsk. Kids these
days. You are *sooo* lucky. We had to program by
moving magnets back and forth over the floppy disk.
You had floppys? I thought it was done with a pencil and this long
strip of paper... :)

 what is the contents of
your .xinitrc file? Mine just says:
 exec gnome-session

I don't have an .xinitrc file. (at least ' find . | grep
xinitrc ' from /
 doesn't find it)
Then you should perhaps have one.
OK, I do now. I got a gnome startup (higher resolution than
before). Right clicked and asked for a new window to test browsing
and it seemed to keep starting things. I switched over to console
F1 and I have a bunch of messages:

nautilus: relocation error: /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0: undefined
symbol: FT_Set_Hint_Flags
FAMOpen failed, FAMErrno=0
FAMOpen failed, FAMErrno=0
FAMOpen failed, FAMErrno=0
which just repeat.
No luck going back to F7 however.

If I look at the log, I don't
get any EE messages, and only (WW) VESA(0):
Bad V_Bios checksum (I seem to get it twice however).
Lots of -- ** II
 and == stuff.
Aha! That's interesting, don't you think?
I think most of what I'm running into as interesting. Informative
is another matter :D .

Can you send the whole log?
(as attachment or inline)
There might be yet another subtle hint in there
somewhere.
You want me to post the config and the log to the list? Or should I
send via private email? Seems kinda big to send copies
everywhere.

Re: [XFree86] startx problems.

2003-01-16 Thread Greg Julius

Followup to last post:
Scott suggested an insmod on agpgart before starting X. So I did a
modprobe agpgart as seen in another place, then lsmod to verify it was
there, then startx. X started. Switched to console F1
(because that nautilus thing looped again). Then did a
Ctrl-Alt-F7 and it came back. That was a first. BUT, I
switched away again and it wouldn't come back. Still have the same
problems. Something must not be getting reset.
Regarding the Memory in the BIOS, I have:

AGP Aperture Size (MB) [64]
On-Chip VGA
[Enabled]
On-Chip Frame Buffer
Size[8MB]
(other option was 1 MB)
On-Chip VGA Turbo Mode[AUTO] (other
options are Enabled and Disabled)

History:
Here are the responses.
Possibly a few more pasted in from others as well.

   I have put in the
4.2.20 kernel - just fine now. I installed the XFree86

Yes, kernel, but I goofed with the # it is 2.4.20.
Sorry, The first
instructions I received indicated I needed the 2.4.20 kernel so I
started
 down that line. See
http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html
.
Where did you get it? Compile from source or a binary package from
somewhere? Did you get the DRI module, too?
The 2.4.20 kernel I got from Linux.org - compiled from source with gcc 3.2
The 4.2.99.3 XFree I got from XFree86.org as a binary. I have also brought the cvs tree for 4.2.99.3 down yesterday so I have the source. I haven't as yet figured out how to build XFree86 and all of its parts from the source.
Did I get the DRI module? How would I know? What should it have been in. I didn't download anything specific.

What does lsmod tell you before you run startx?
I have put some stuff up on my website:
lsmod:http://www.outtacyte.com/outtacyte/ref/lsmodlist
XFree86.0.log:http://www.outtacyte.com/outtacyte/ref/XFree86-log
XF86Config:http://www.outtacyte.com/outtacyte/ref/XF86Config
The config file comes from XFree86 -configure and I've only changed the driver from i810 to vesa.

About the weird blanking when switching between virtual consoles
(Ctrl-Alt-Fn), have you tried the vesafb ? (easier to do if you compile
the kernel from source, I think)
what is vesafb? Is this a driver? What would I do to try it out?
Other Questions asked by others:
Scott:
Are you loading the AGP GART driver? I'm not very familiar with Linux,
but your symptoms sound like those that I experienced in FreeBSD before
figured out that I had to load the AGP GART driver into my kernel at
boot-time.
I have the following AGP/DRM

CONFIG_AGP=m
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
CONFIG_AGP_I810=y
CONFIG_AGP_VIA=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD=y
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD_8151 is not set
CONFIG_AGP_SIS=y
CONFIG_AGP_ALI=y
CONFIG_AGPSWORKS=y
CONFIG_DRM=y
# CONFIG_DRM_OLD is not set

#
# DRM 4.1 drivers
#
CONFIG_DRM_NEW=y
CONFIG_DRM_TDFX=m
CONFIG_DRM_R128=m
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m
CONFIG_DRM_I810=m
# CONFIG_DRM_I810_XFREE_41 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_I830=m
CONFIG_DRM_MGA=m
CONFIG_DRM_SIS=m
I can recompile with any changes necessary easily.

I always add the monitor's VertRefresh HorizSync settings into
XF86Config before doing the startx... If I don't do this, I seem to have a
lot of problems :)
I've done this while goofing around with this problem. Didn't help. It's not in the current configuration. I've tried leaving the XF86Config file pretty much as XFree86 generated it for me.
I had all sorts of problems with the vesa driver on this chipset. Once
got the i810 driver to work (and the only trick to that was loading
the AGP GART kernel module at boot) these problems disappeared.

Also, make sure that DRI and GLX (tho, I don't know if these work with
vesa) are loading in your config. Also, I think there's some video
memory allocation issues if you're using vesa... There's some info on
that here:
 http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel845g/linux.htm
Humm, I'll have to look into that. I have noticed some issues in the log before, but I didn't think much of them. The log file is referenced above. I do have a bunch of memory on the thing however. I notice the memory spec is not mentioned in this incarnation of the config file.
OK, that's all the questions. I'll read up on that memory thing mentioned by Scott whilst waiting for the next set of responses.
Thanks to all of you who are helping!

[XFree86] How do I extract the source from the cvs?

2003-01-16 Thread Greg Julius
Hello y'all,
I accessed the XFree86.org cvs yesterday and checked out the 4.2.99.3
branch. It took nearly all day yesterday to 'download'.

How do I extract the source for 4.2.99.3? Or is it already extracted and
I've just got to do the make World etc? I've been poking around, but I'm
getting confusled. I haven't find any instructions which are simple enough
for a dummy like me. What I've found is either out of date (talking about
old releases) or assumes I know more than I do. Sigh.

Is there a document any of you would like to point me to? Or give me the
synopsis and then maybe I can find the rest.

Thanks for your patience and help.

There is no need to extract it.
If you used CVSup then the source will be in whatever directory you
specified as the prefix in the config file.
Head into that directory, then into xc
Then type make World and wait.
OK, I got a message that said:

had a clock (hard to read, but analog format). It had two terminal windows

1) How do I get my pretty interface back (GNOME)? I tried switchdesk

Please help! Any answer to any of these questions will be welcome.

To Do: Get GNOME back. Get startx to restart without a reboot. Get
correct drivers in place.

[Xpert]Re: Mouse no longer working in Quake3?

2002-12-12 Thread Greg Stark
I see the exact same thing. starting with +set in_dgamouse 0 doesn't help
either. As far as I know that mode doesn't use DGA at all so I can't even
figure out how this could fail.

Mark Vojkovich [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I just noticed that the mouse no longer works in Quake3.
The only significant change I made to this system (with regards
to the mouse, that is) was syncing and rebuilding XFree86 from
CVS. I don't suppose anyone managed to get CVS (I synced at
18:31 on Dec 11) and Quake3 (ver. 1.32) to have working mouse
support. At first I thought it was DGA stuff that was broken,
but the mouse works fine in my DGA test app. Xev shows that
Quake3 isn't getting any events in fullscreen or windowed mode,
 DGA mouse support or not.

[Xpert]Newbie: Stated frequency limits are exceeded

2002-11-16 Thread Greg Shaw
Hi,
Current config:
XFree86 4.2.0
Redhat 8.0
Kernel 2.4.19
Video S3 Trio3D/2X 4M
Driver vesa

I am not an X developer but cannot help but think that the problem I am
having shouldn't actually be allowed. So I would like to ask you, the
developers, for your opinion and hopefully a solution. I have compiled
the SRPM for 4.2.0 and can find my way around cvs but have not yet
managed to patch 4.2.0 to 4.2.1. So I still have the floating point
exception that is fixed in 4.2.1.

I am trying to install a 17 LCD monitor (BenQ FP751) under X on my
desktop system.
Thankfully, the administration under 4.2.0 is a whole lot easier using
redhat-config-xfree86.
I have selected the nearest frequency matched monitor Acer FP561. Its
frequency limits are HorizSync 31.5 - 60.0 and VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0.
When I select this monitor I cannot select 1280x1024 (the physical size
of the monitor) as my resolution. The highest offered resolution is
1280x960. If I select this and restart X then I get 1024x768 @
48kHzx60Hz. Close but no banana.

Next I tried a different monitor type that maintained the right
frequencies but gave me 1280x1024 as a resolution. Generic Laptop
Display Panel 1280x1024 (31.5-67kHz, 50.0-75.0Hz) seemed the best fit.
Although, this one had a Horiz refresh that exceeded my monitor I
figured I would give it a try. Selecting 1280x1024 with this monitor
produced 1280x1024 @ 46.4kHz x 86.9Hz. Obviously, this frequency would
have overdriven my LCD monitor but I plugged in a CRT that displays the
sync frequencies noted above. The thing that concerns me and the reason
for my (longish) email is that 86.9Hz exceeds the stated limit for this
monitor (75Hz). Should that be allowed?

I know that I have not provided enough information here to fix my
problem of getting my LCD to work but I hope there is enough for someone
to decide if there is a problem with frequencies being exceeded.
Obviously, if the 1280x1024 resolution can be achieved by staying within
the stated freqencies then that would solve my problem but that is BTW.

This all works under Win2K with a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 64kHzx60Hz.
Admittedly this is with a more advanced video card than the Trio.

Thanks, Greg Shaw.

Marc Aurele La France [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 - Do you see the same problems using the Mach64 GT?

Hm, so now I can't reproduce the mouse hotpoint out of sync problem on the
Matrox either. I think I was being fooled by a window manager that was
compressing mouse movements and sometimes didn't end up in the correct place.
Using the gimp to locate the hot point the hot point always seems to be in
sync.

The panning is still jerky at 4 pixels per pan, that's still annoying. But
it's not a correctness issue I guess. Any chance of going back to the X 3
method of panning that allowed arbitrary offsets?

The displaced pixels showing up at the right edge of the screen is still there
though. It only happens on the Matrox card, not the ATI.

Some more data: it seems to happen when the screen is panned to any offset
congruent to 4 mod 64.

For example, when panned to column 4 (with the first column being 0) the
pixels starting at column 128-131 appear in the rightmost four columns of the
screen. When panned to 68 columns 192-195 appear in the rightmost column. This
is with the virtual frame buffer at 1600x1200 and the actual screen resolution
set to 640x480.

The mouse pointer does show up on the duplicated pixels at the right edge when
it passes through those four pixels in the middle.

No, that would be crazy. The SYNC extension permits the client to deliver

To clear things up, maybe, I think the source of the confusion is that when

I don't think he means the kernel stops running the client's process, but
rather that the X server stops processing requests from that client, leaving

[Xpert]Clueless and in need of Xfree86 set-up help

2002-10-08 Thread Greg Brooks

(please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks)

All,

I'm setting up XFree86 as part of a FreeBSD install, and having odd problems.
Having read the manual and trolled the 'net for answers, I now turn to you
smart folks for help. The box:

Dell optiplex PIII, 512mb RAM, 30 gb hd, built-in ATI Rage Pro AGP video with 8
mb video RAM.

An install of freeBSD 4.5 (with, I suppose, an earlier version of XFree86) goes
swimmingly well. However, when trying to install FreeBSD 4.6, configuring X
goes awry whether it's done via CLI or the graphical interface. The card is
identifed automatically as simply ATI but doesn't appear to be congigurable
otherwise. Also, the mouse, post-config, immediately goes to the top of the
screen and won't function (Microsoft Intellimouse through PS2 port, set up as a
non-wheeled mouse, although I've tried other settings and it fries under those,
too). As with the video, the mouse worked fine under FreeBSD 4.5 and the
earlier version of XFree86.

As I see it, I have a few options -- I'm looking to you folks for advice on
what the best approach would be:

* I can install FreeBSD 4.5 and either not worry about being on the leading
edge, or do a make buildworld/make installworld to get the system up to 4.6.
This appears to bring stuff up to date, although for the life of me I don't
know if it updates Xfree86 as part of the process.

* I can (with your help) figure out exactly how I should configure this damned
video card under the latest/greatest XFree86. I'd particularly love to see
exact settings from anyone who has this card/mobo combination.

* I can install freebsd 4.6 without X at all, and then add Xfree86 post-install
as either the older version (if that's all that works) or the current version
(if someone can tell me how to get it to work).

Many thanks!

[Newbie]Update to XFree86 4.2.0

2002-08-27 Thread Greg MacLelland

I am not able to get beyond the shell install script for XFree86 v4.2.0
on a Linux-ix86-glibc22 binary distribution release. When I run the sh
Xinstall.sh from the proper directory that contains all the required as
well as optional tarballs the return error I get is extract.exe is the
wrong version for binary distribution and will not run or words to that
effect. I have made sure that I have the proper binaries and extract as
well as extract.exe Xinstall.sh as well as Xinstall.bin and still
nothing. The FTP site has an Updates file and Errata and I have found
out that the latest build for Linux-ix86-glibc is dated for Jan 20 2002
my extract download matches this date with a variation of some 20kb
over the other choices of extract.exe and extract.bin. Initially I
couldn't get my Matrox G450 to spawn a KDE environment and still can't.
Researched and found out the XFree86 version 4.2.0 supported this card
but previous version didn't.

[Newbie]nVidia Driver and DPMS woes

2002-07-31 Thread Greg Oliver

Hi,

I am running XFree 4.2.0 on Linux with an nVidia GeForce256 card.

When using the standard nv supplied driver with Xfree, all works as
expected. I have my xinitrc file set my dpms options for me to turn off
the monitor after 5 minutes and I can issue an `xset dpms force off`
command at any time and it will immediately shut off.

Now, I can load the nVidia driver into the config file:

Changes:

 Load glx

 Load GLcore
 Load dri

 Drivernvidia
 Drivernv

X starts up and everything works fine, until I go to turn the screen
off. When the nvidia driver turns it off, it evidently sends a bad sync
or refresh rate to the monitor because it cannot interpret the output.

Are there any commands I can run to see what frequencies that the driver
is outputting to the monitor at that point?

Thanks

[Newbie]Mapping XFree86 server to the X Window System...

2002-05-29 Thread Greg Neely

As I recall, an X application can be made with
or without MOTIF widget, Xlib, and Xt calls.

Xlib and Xt function calls are handled by the
XServer (XFree86) more or less directly.

If I wanted to write an application that used MOTIF
calls, I would need XFree86, plus someones add-on
implementation of the MOTIF widget libraries/headers.

At least, that is my assumption without knowing anything
else about XFree86 when it is called an X-Server.

Now, and to the question, if Darwin implements a
release of XFree86, where do I get a product that
can be configured on an XServe box (running Mac
XServer) to pass MOTIF Xm widget calls to the
server and have the server understand them.

In other words, who makes the MOTIF widget libraries/
headers for the apple XServer implementation? Can
I contact them on the INTERNET.

It seems to me this would be extremely useful in getting
old applications developed using Xm, Xt, and Xlib calls
running on the new XServe boxes.

Thanks.

I reformatted your words above -- please use reasonable line
lengths (about 72 characters is good). And I moved your words
where they belong -- /after/ the quoted material they refer to.

If you don't know, don't give wild speculative answers as they
just clutter up the list with noise that does nobody any good.

In the installation in question, which is a pure XFree86-4.1.0
installation, the tools I mentioned are all provided as part of
that installation. They are, therefore, XFree86-4.x tools.

Under FreeBSD-4.x, Xwrapper is a standalone setuid root binary

symlink to the selected X server; under XFree86-4.x, X is a

As for starting it, I only ever use xdm and it just works.

[Newbie]working sis 630 display

2001-12-24 Thread Greg Kemeny

Many thanks to Lionel on this site for pointing me in the right
direction. I used your suggestion and used the vesa driver with my sis
630 and it's almost perfect. It was only
1/2 to the right but I was able to adjust it with the modlines. I am
using the 800x600
display size, the 640x480 is still squeezed but I am not planing on
using that. I know
you said it's not accelerated but it's good enough for me at this
point. Now I can explore Linux further.Meybe there should be a note at
the sis driver info site to use the vesa
driver temporarily until there is full support for this sis 630 chip
Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and everybody on this site.
Keep up the good work.

XP video Card), however every time I go through the various windows to choose
my specific video card I only get as far as the Hs and
then xf86config quicks without prompting.

Is there a patch to fix this
problem or better still does anyone know the actual card database number for Cyberblade
XP using XFree 4.1.0

The other thing I wanted to
know is that I have seen some info on the web with people that had problems
with creating a XF86Config file for a Toshiba

Would any one that has had

I just went to ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.1.0/binaries/
and grabbed the files for my platform as per the instructions
there and then installed 4.1.0.

I then ran xf86cfg which generated a perfect XF86Config file
except that it only had 640x480 modes in it. I just changed
the following line in the Display subsections of the Screen
section from

Modes 640x480

to

Modes 1024x768

and it just worked (so long as I didn't try for more than 8-bit
colour). In fact, I deleted all the other depth Display
items.

I hope this is helpful.

What nonsense. I watched somebody at a user group install
FreeBSD on the first computer he had ever bought the day after
he bought it just a few days ago. He installed OpenBSD on day 1
and then decided to try FreeBSD on day 2. Neither installation

install various BSD's, including FreeBSD, on laptops.

This doesn't mean that you won't ever have a problem if you
happen to have unsupported hardware, but that's not restricted
to the BSD offerings.

My next question is: how do I get XFree86-4.0.3 to handle a
middle mouse button from the two buttons is has?

And, while I'm at it, is there a way to map some of the useless
Windows keys to mouse buttons to give me three actual buttons
nice and close to the regular keys?

If I've missed the correct FM, please point me at it.

[Newbie]mode lines for TFT displays on laptops

2001-12-02 Thread Greg Black

I'm a newbie to using X on laptops/notebooks, and need some help
with an X config for a TFT screen -- I can't find any mention of
these things on the XFree86.org web pages, but I'm guessing
there must be plenty of people running X on such displays.

My initial efforts with xf86config only produce results at
640x480 (although this thing really does 1024x768) and this is
far from useful, as it produces a display offset about an inch
to the right and an inch or more doen (with the bottom half inch
of the image wrapped around to the top of the screen. I have no
specifications for the display or the adapter, beyond the fact
that it appears to be a SiS 630 or perhaps 6300 adapter.

If anybody could point me in the direction of some ideas to try,
I'd be most grateful.

If there is some information that I ought to have and should
have provided here, please tell me about that too.

Thanks in advance for any clues.
