[XFree86] Bug

2003-03-07 Thread serumo
Dear friends.

I have a Diamond Stealth64 3240 S3 video adapter card installed in my
computer and it is recognized by the X server wich comes with Red Hat Linux
release 7.2, but not by the one wich comes with the release 8.0 of the same
Linux flavor.
Attached is the error message displayed when I tryed to start the X server.

Thanks for all.

Sergio Rubens.

[XFree86] bug

2003-11-26 Thread chendh18
hi,I use the VMWare to Install Redhat Linux 7.2. Before installing the VMWare tools
for linux, I can't start the X-Windows. I think it maybe duo to the VMWare itself's
problem, but after I installed the VMWare tools, the problem occurs again.
can you tell me how to deal with this problem?
thanks.

[XFree86] bug

2004-07-02 Thread Vitaly
If run xinit from mc's subshell it do not will work. The root of problem mc by default
setup the TOSTOP flag on controling terminal and this flag block child's work(for
example gnome-session started from .xinitrc).
User for solve this problem may redirect output of child to anywhere.
But better way - unset flag TOSTOP from controling tty of xinit befor first fork() in
'xinit'.

example code in perl:

use POSIX;

# #this code do allow tty to child process.
# #on most system it is by default but on my - not.

   my $termios = POSIX::Termios->new;
   my $c_lflag;

   if(isatty(1)){
   $termios->getattr( 1 );
   $c_lflag = $termios->getlflag;
   $termios->setlflag( $c_lflag & ~(&POSIX::TOSTOP) );
   $termios->setattr( 1, &POSIX::TCSANOW );
   }

   if(isatty(2)){
   $termios->getattr( 2 );
   $c_lflag = $termios->getlflag;

[XFree86] bug report

2003-01-25 Thread Robbert Knipscheer
Hi all,

I have an IBM Thinkpad R31 with an Intel 830MG With Xfree 3X you should
choose for the i810 driver Know I'm installing Freebsd 5.0 with
XFree86 4-2_01 And I choosed for the i810 driver but that would't work...
I have the log file included. Somebody on the net did find out that in
this case it works fine with the vesa driver so I included that one and it
worked.

Do you have an other solution?

Regards Robbert Knipscheer

 Specificially, what is the problem?

 I don't see any fatal error in that log file. It looks like you
don't have the DRI's kernel module installed (drm), but I suspect
you don't actually need that and the dri warnings would go away
if you didn't load the "dri" module in the XF86Config file.

Mark.

have windows xp home edition on it). X gave out an error message: No
device found. and finally went up with 800x600 resolution instead of the
monitor resolution 1024x768. I am attaching the log file to this email.
Hope you could help out.

thanks,

Those programs are there to help get your config started. You have to
tweak it yourself.

EDID and DDC can help probe attributes that your video card and monitor
agree on.

Re: [XFree86] bug

2004-06-14 Thread Mark Vojkovich
   The XFree86 project cannot provide support for NVIDIA's binary
drivers. We can, however, provide support for the "nv" driver that
comes with XFree86. You should be able to get XFree86 to work
easily with the "nv" driver. To get help with NVIDIA's binary driver
you should contact NVIDIA or the nvnews.net driver forum.

[XFree86] Bug report

2004-08-26 Thread u3557
Dear XFREE86,

My X server worked well until I upgrated my kernel to Linux-2.6.8:
It still works with kernels up to Linux-2.6.8-pre2, but crashes with
segmentation-fault on any kernel from linux-2.6.8-pre3 onward.

So far, this only happens on my AMD computer, and regardless of
which video-card I use (I tried three different cards - two AGP
and one PCI) and whether I configure the driver to be VESA or not,
or even VGA. The exact same software however, works fine when being
run on a Pentium-4.

This first happened on XFree 4.3.0, so I just installed the latest
XFree 4.4.0, but it makes no difference.

I am using a plain kernel with no modules and no direct rendering,
as I do not even require any fancy acceleration, just that I can
get into graphics mode from time to time to view the web.

Please help,
Amnon.

2004-10-28 Thread sathish kumar
Hi,

I am unable to start my X Server environment. I tried
using the Xconfigurator command and i was able to get
to the GUI environment momentarily but i am not able
to do startx.Ive attached the log file with the mail.
It would really help if you can provide some
information on resolving this issue. It all started
with a Oracle's users01.dbf file getting corrupted.

regards
sathish

You will need to install XFree86 fonts.

You may also try restarting xfs:

/etc/init.d/xfs start

Hope this works/helps.

[XFree86] Bug tracking policy

2003-01-16 Thread Michael Toomim
What's the XFree86 bug tracking policy? I submitted a bug via the web
interface, and I see that it appeared on this mailing list. Has it been
recorded somewhere, or will it be completely forgotten in a few days
(since there aren't even any archives of this mailing list)?

Not it isn't. It's a misconfiguration of your system.

Or -- if it *is* a bug report, then you should direct it to Red Hat.

Look back about a week or so in the archive for of info on how to
start font servers -- your problem is not new or unique.

Make sure the xfs font server is running at startup properly.
this isn't an XFree86 bug, but is a misconfiguration of your
system of some kind. It is possible this is due to font
configuration modifications you've done, or a full /tmp
partition, or it is also possible due to a bug in a recent
version of kdebase which was released as erratum and affects some
users systems.

Make sure all fonts.dir files in your font directories are mode
0644.

[XFree86] Bug reporting suggestion

2003-01-27 Thread John Tapsell
Hi,
  Many people are reporting problems and bugs without giving
enough information.
  Personally I try to take the view "the user is always right", and so
this is what I propose.. :)

  *) I (or someone else) writes a quick program (or extension to "bug"
or "reportbug" or any other bug reporting program) that the user runs.
  *) Running this program is suggested when the server crashes.
  *) The program notes down all the relevant details. X server, distro,
cpu, graphics card, copy of log, copy of config and credit card number.
  *) The program emails this to a server. It shows it first
to the user, with an option to save it to file instead/as well as so that
those without internet connection can put it on a floppy disk and email it
from elsewhere.
  *) The problem is compared against a crude knowledge base system
(fancy name for a database).
  *) Solutions are returned to the user automatically.
  *) The user is encouraged to reply, successful or not.
  *) If successful, then the database notes it.
  *) If not, the whole lot gets sent to a mailing list (possibly this one).
  *) When it is solved, the knowledge based system is updated.

I've been meaning to do something like this, but more generic.
 However the X mailing list tends to get a lot more repetive requests than
most, and also has emails with the least amount of information,
so seems the most needy IMHO.

  Thoughts?

  If I hear no comments then I'll get depressed and kill myself. :)

Are you sure this is a bug? It looks like a misconfiguration. Did you
configure the server manually or with Xfdrake (You're running mandrake
right?) .

Normally, X uses this kind of scheme for its configuration:

serverlayout
* keyboard
* mouse
* screen
- monitor
- graphics device

Since the server says "no core pointer device specified" it probably doesn't
know how to use your mouse. In your ServerLayout section, there must be a
line like

InputDevice "foo" "CorePointer"

Where foo corresponds to the Identifier name in the InputDevice section that
descripbes your mouse.

2003-03-05 Thread Grove, Darren V
Bharat,

Did you also install the NVIDIA_Kernel-4191 that is associated with the
GLX driver. You have to install both rpm packages, which you can download
from NVIDIA web page. Also, download the install notes. You will most likely
have to edit the XF86Config-4 file located in /etc/X11 directory and change
a veiw variables in there (if you haven't already done this).

Good luck!

I have downloaded the driver for it from

that driver. When I set color depth to 16 bit I can't set vertical
resolution larger the 512 pixels. Would you fix this bug or would you
send me the source code of that driver please?
Bye.

RE: [XFree86] bug report

2003-06-06 Thread Cynthia Grossen
Do you already have an instance of the server running on the machine?

If you don't have another server running (or don't think you do) then remove
(the file located in) /tmp/(called or containing the phrase) ".X0-lock" and
start again.

If you do have another server running, close it and try again or launch the
second server with the appropriate options (one example: "startx -- :1")

I just signed up for this list, just curious what this was regarding. I too, have an
Inspiron 8500 and I'm having problems getting the display to hit the 16/10 aspect
ratio so it fills the screen. I'm doing this under FreeBSD 5.0 with a GENERIC kernel
and xfree 4.3.0. I purchased my laptop with the GeForce 4 card so I've been using the
xfree stock 'nv' driver.

I'm trying to set X to 1920x1200 @ 60hz, but for some reason it will only hit
1280x1024 with an aspect ratio of 4/3.

You can check my config and logs at: http://marley.bitstream.net/~hump/

   Your config file is only setup for 1280x1024. Show me an
XFree86.0.log from a 1900x1200 setup that fails.

   I've seen these laptops working at 16/10 with the "nv" driver before.

It would help if you posted a log, or at the very least, the version of
XFree86 and the operating system you use.

I think you need to upgrade to XFree86 version 4.3.x if you want a Radeon 9200
to be supported. :) The older radeon driver simply doesn't support your
graphics card.

[XFree86] a Xfree86 bug

2004-03-15 Thread Edouard Debry
hello,

I currently run the slackware 9.1 distro with Xfree86 4.3
I have just installed the latest kernel 2.6.4 and I use nvidia

I have no pb except this odd message from kernel :

The point is that a few minutes later, while everything seems to run
well, my system totally freezes, mouse and keyboard, so that the only
solution is reboot

Do you think the freeze events are due to the reported bug ?

hoping for your help

[XFree86] bug from Vitaly

2004-07-05 Thread Vitaly
If run xinit from mc's subshell it do not will work. The root of problem mc by default
setup the TOSTOP flag on controling terminal and this flag block child's work(for
example gnome-session started from .xinitrc).
User for solve this problem may redirect output of child to anywhere.
But better way - unset flag TOSTOP from controling tty of xinit befor first fork() in
'xinit'.

code prototype in perl:

use POSIX;

# #this code do allow tty to child process.
# #on most system it is by default but on my - not.

   my $termios = POSIX::Termios->new;
   my $c_lflag;

   if(isatty(1)){
   $termios->getattr( 1 );
   $c_lflag = $termios->getlflag;
   $termios->setlflag( $c_lflag & ~(&POSIX::TOSTOP) );
   $termios->setattr( 1, &POSIX::TCSANOW );
   }

[XFree86] bug in xfree86

2004-07-28 Thread guidoke guidoke
hi,

I installed Debian two days ago, installed the xfree 86 but have now problems with all
the functions on my keybord, alt funtions don't work anymore, my mouse can not scroll
if I try it with the wheelmouse.

this is what I get when i try ti change the settings of the keyboard:

Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.

X server version data:
The XFree86 Project, Inc
4031
You are using XFree 4.3.0.
There are known problems with complex XKB configurations.
Try using simpler configuration or taking more fresh version of XFree software.
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

can you help me to get the keyboard and the mouse working properly?

I'm completely new in Linux, Debian.

greetings, guidoke

[XFree86] Possible XFree86 Bug

2004-08-11 Thread Gail Koontz
I shut down my Mandrake 10.0 system normally in order to boot an alternate
(older) system, Mandrake 9.2. On reboot, the X server would not load because
of a problem that had been introduced into the configuration file at line 36.
I have had this exact problem (same line of the file) happen before, but
infrequently - always, I think, when I have either booted a different kernel
or an alternate system then returned to the normal Mandrake 10.0 with a 2.4
kernel. I can fix the problem by booting to the alternate system, removing
the extra double quote from line 36, and rebooting, but I have no idea why
the file is being rewritten in the first place.

Because of the length of the supporting material, I have included it as an
attachment.

Your /proc/cpuinfo indicates you have an Athlon64, but you are running an X

The question then is how could it work before?
The Athlon64 is designed to be fully PC/x86-compatible:
it works only in 32-bit mode unless one has a 64-bit operating system
that turns on the appropriate hardware bits to make it a 64-bit machine -
but I don't have such an operating system, so if the Athlon was operating
in 64-bit mode I could not even boot.

The fact is that the exact same program (the X server) and its supporting
files, running on exactly the same hardware, was fully functional under the
Linux-2.6.8-pre2 and earlier kernels and crash under kernels from
Linux-2.6.8-pre3 onward, so it must be either a newly introduced kernel
bug, or an old bug in the X server making wrong assumptions about some
unpromised kernel behaviour.

Perhaps it would help if I could lay my hands on a binary version
of the "X" program that has more debug information that I can present
to this list.

Amnon.

Your /proc/cpuinfo indicates you have an Athlon64, but you are running an X
server binary meant for i686's. That's not likely to work.

Fair enough. I've looked into this a bit more. Please try the attached source
patch. It assumes that the problem is due to pre3's mmap() changes.

[XFree86] Bug was found

2005-02-16 Thread Rodion Vshevtsov
Hi to all!

I've just now downloaded XFree86 server. Link are mentioned below:
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/source/XFree86-4.4.0-src-3.tgz

It seems there is an error in xc/programs/Xserver/os/xalloc.c file (line 188):
In this file:
#if defined (_LP64) || \
defined(__alpha__) || defined(__alpha) || \
defined(__ia64__) || defined(ia64) || \
defined(__sparc64__) || \
defined(__s390x__) || \
defined(__AMD64__) || defined(AMD64) || \
(defined(sgi) && _MIPS_SZLONG == 64)) // <- spare trailing ")"
it seems should be:
#if defined (_LP64) || \
defined(__alpha__) || defined(__alpha) || \
defined(__ia64__) || defined(ia64) || \
defined(__sparc64__) || \
defined(__s390x__) || \
defined(__AMD64__) || defined(AMD64) || \
(defined(sgi) && _MIPS_SZLONG == 64)

Without modifying this file the syntax error had occurred.

In addition to this information I have a question.
After starting XFree86 v4.4.0 the keyboard doesn't work.
X Server was compiled under Mandrake Linux 10 (gcc 3.3.2) with standard
compilation parameters.

If you can tell me, please, the cause of sush X Server behaviour.

P.S. Other e-mail is "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Thanks a lot
Best regards

The MiscExt problem you reported looks to be fixed in the current
pre-4.3.0 snapshot, so I'd suggest you try that and report back.
It's always best to try the current CVS version to check for that.

As a guilty party, I say, "Brilliant idea!"

Lest the suggestion fall by the wayside, why not start with the more
modest goal of automatically gathering "all the relevant details" for
submission to this list? This would seem to be easy enough, and quite a
valuable time and frustration saver. (C.f. the JDEE->Help->Submit
Problem Report under Requesting Help

interaction would seem to be harder, and to require resources that may
or may not be immediately available.

Okay I'll have it done by the weekend.
If it is of decent quality, could it be included in the distribution,
with a bit of text suggesting to run it appended to the X crash output?
Otherwise it is kinda pointless :)

We'll have a play anyway. I have an example tommorrow morning, and it's
getting late, so I won't be able to do it till friday.
Kick me if I haven't submitted something by the monday morning :)

ooh, as an after thought... I suppose this had better be done in C or C++?
I can code in just about any language, but best not increase the
dependancies of X, right?

The DRM from GATOS is incompatible to other DRI components from XFree86
in a way which could cause such symptoms.

[XFree86] bug in ATI driver

2003-02-23 Thread Kris Finkenbinder
At least it seems to be a bug. Take note that I've seen this happening
with recent releases of XFree86 for a few months, at least. I've been
downloading new releases of Knoppix and booting them on this machine for
a few months. Each time I've seen this and just thought it was something
peculiar about the way Knoppix configured XFree86.

What I have here is a Gateway Solo 9300, with a 15.7 inch (that's right,
15.7, that's not a typo), 1280x1024 LCD screen, and an ATI Rage
Mobility-P video card, with 8MB of video memory, I believe.

This card was working great with X 4.2.1 that was installed with
Mandrake 9.0. I never had a problem with it. Since I started upgrading
packages to Cooker versions, it has wigged out on me. I'm unable to take
a screenshot of this effect. Apparently the window manager sees the
screen just fine, it's just what I'm seeing that's gone haywire.

Here's what I'm seeing: About one quarter from the top of the screen
there is a horizontal line, below which everything gets stretched by
about 30 pixels downward. Even the mouse cursor gets stretched when it
crosses that area. Since the screen is being stretched, the actual
bottom of the screen image is pushed off the bottom of the physical
screen, so I can't see any toolbars down there.

Along the right side of the screen, about 90 pixels away from the edge,
there is a vertical swath about 30 pixels wide that is just "screwed up"
like it's being seen through a filter or something. The effect is most
marked around the edges of things, and on fonts.

I'm not including a config file because it is pretty obviously not a
configuration problem. I've tried XFdrake and xf86cfg -text to
autocreate the file, and when that failed I tried all the different
available options, even "LCDsync" which wasn't in the man page but was
suggested on [EMAIL PROTECTED] by Marc la France. Nothing has made any
difference at all, except Option "SWcursor". Without that option, I
can't click on anything without hovering over an invisible point about
200 pixels below the object I'm trying to click on. Also without that
option, the mouse cursor will hit the bottom of that stretched area and
stop dead, like it thinks it's at the top of the screen.

The only way I've been able to get this card to work is by using the
VESA driver, which of course sucks because it's really slow.

If there is any specific debugging command or debugging program I can
download and run to provide more useful information, I will happily do
so. This is really frustrating and I'd really like to see this fix get
into XFree86 before the Mandrake 9.1 final release.

I'm running XFree86 version 4.2.99.902 (4.3.0 RC 2) and all this happens
while using the ati driver.

Thanks,
Kris F.

[XFree86] BUG? mga_dri wrong colors.

2003-02-24 Thread Craig Knox
Hi,

System: Linux 2.5.62, Matrox G450, gentoo 1.4

  Just noticed a GL game using DRI on XFree86-4.2.99 has the wrong
colors - red instead of blue mostly, but if I use the mga_dri.so for X
4.2.1 from the matrox site it works perfectly.
  Didn't have the mga_dri.so from earlier versions of Xfree around so
couldn't try them.

Marked as enhancement. Transparent Windows may be on the agenda for 5.0.
Probably should close this bug for now, though.

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED]  2003-03-28 16:51 ---
We should define "true transparency" beforehand. Here are some types of
transparency I would like to see that might be considered "true" (in the
sense of not being grab-a-pixmap-and-use-it-for-background fakery):

 * Ability of a user or window manager to set an overall opacity value
   (probably in the range 0..255 or as a percentage) for any given window.
   Think of setting the window you're working with to 15% transparent so
   that if anything happens in the window behind (say, changes in a log
   you're tailing) you can notice.

 * Better: Ability of user or window manager to set a transparency _mask_
   for each window, i.e., what percentage of each colour component (R, G, B)
   shows through from behind. All sorts of possibilities here.

 * Another approach: ability of application to set the transparency (either
   as a simple value or better a mask) for *portions* of a window. So, then,
   an application could make its toolbars and sidebar (for example) mostly
   transparent but leave the content area fairly opaque. Or think of a clock
   (set always-on-top) that is fully transparent except for the numbers,
   which are mostly transparent but darken and blue-ify things slightly,
   like a shadow.

These ideas are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but we should define
which sort of transparency this bug is about.

[XFree86] bug or config pb?

2003-03-31 Thread emmanuel simonnet
Hello
I can't connect to Xserver . Error msg :no screen found
See Xfree86 log and Xf86Config file joined.

What's wrong (probably my config)? Could you help?

Distr : Mandrake 9.1
Video Card : Radeon 7500
Monitor : iiyama La702UT(Vision Master Pro 1411) ,spec : 110
MHz;30-70Khz;50-160Hz

One more question : Why it doesn't seem to use the hsync and vref'resh rates
that are in the config file? (In the log,you can read : monitor1 using
default hsync range of 28-33Khz;idem for vrefresh)

Thanx for answer
