[XFree86] Problems with X and Fonts

2004-09-24 Thread David Berlind
Hello,

I've posted this message over at the mailing list on fontconfig, but
after some time, have received no reply and was hoping someone in this
forum might be able to give me a list of the precise steps I must take
to diagnose/resolve this problem:

At the suggestion of the GTK+ web site, which I needed to install for
Ethereal, I needed to install Pango, and to make that work, needed
Fontconfig. I recently ran an installation of fontconfig and it wiped
out my X interface. The error message reported a font problem. So, I
reinstalled XFree86 (one suggestion) and I'm still getting an error.
When I start X with the command XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new, I
get a grey screen with the cursor in the middle (and the mouse moves
the cursor fine).
But that's as far as it gets. No windows. If I CTRL-ATL-BKSP, I see
the following:

Could not init font path element /usr/x11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/,
removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/x11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/,
removing from list!

these directories exist with files in them.

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide

This is the expected behavior. You didn't start any window
manager, you only started the server. Install your XF86Config
file in /etc/X11/ and run startx.

Install the config file that XFree86 created when you did the
configure (at /etc/X11/XF86Config), or pass it as an argument to
startx startx -- -xf86config path to XF86Config.

[XFree86] problems with X server

2004-03-09 Thread Tatyana Polenova
Hello,

I was trying to run Xconfigurator to increase the screen resolution to
1024x768 (the previous setting was for lower resolution), but the xserver
does not restart. I tried a variety of different settings for the default
monitor and video card, but unsuccessfully. I am sending along the .log file.

Could you please recommend what the best way to proceed is?

Thank you very much
Sincerely,
Tatyana Polenova

  Remove NVIDIA's /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
file. It is incompatible with the nv driver that comes with
XFree86, which you are configured to use.

Mark.

It looks like your font server (xfs) failed to start. Either start
it, or put the proper paths in your XF86Config.

BTW, this must the 1000th time I've seen this problem reported for a

[XFree86] Problems with X on Dell Optiplex

2004-01-25 Thread Tolga Uzuner

Hi,

I am having problems with X
on an Optiplex SX270 from Dell, using a 1900FP digital lcd screen and an Intel
82865G video card. At first, it was complaining that there were no Video BIOS modes
for chosen depth in I810 and that a screen was found but none had a useable
configuration.

It would then let me go intro
X albeit a generic config one which looked terrible. I would try to play around
with the device driver/graphics card setting but none of them ever worked.

Now it isnt even
letting me do that. The last log file it generated is attached.

Help !

Thanks,

Tolga

2004-01-25 Thread Christoph Jaeger
Hi Tolga,

While I don't know the reason for the problem shown in the attached log
file, I do know what keeps you from using your Optiplex with a decent
resolution. I had the same problem.

In the BIOS, you have to tell the system to reserve 8MB graphics memory
(default is 1MB, which will bring you [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]). This
sounds easy to do, but the current BIOS version (A03) has a bug, so your
8MB setting is ignored, the system always thinks there is only 1MB of
graphics memory.

The solution for this BIOS bug: downgrade your BIOS to version A02. Just
download the correct version from Dell's homepage and follow the
instructions. This worked perfectly for me (I can now use [EMAIL PROTECTED]
via the DVI port, and it looks great).

Best Regards,

Christoph Jäger

You need to be running XFree86 4.3.0 OR NVIDIA's binary drivers
(which will work with your current XFree86) to get that card to work.
Your X-server is more than two years old and the drivers that come
with it predate your graphics hardware.

[XFree86] Problems with X-Configuration for Laptop Compaq LTE 5300

2003-09-09 Thread Tom Halvorsen
Hello XFree86Org.

I have installed linux on severel PC's and it works well, but with my
old laptop Compaq LTE 5300 I have difficulties with the X-Configuration.
In the XFree86 log file I see your E-mail adresse at the end, so no I
want to ask for help.

Attached to this mail is four files. I have tried with two different
configurations. There is one complete XF86Config and XFree86.log for both
configurations.

The first configuration is when I installed Linux RedHat 8.0. As you can
see the XF86Config is build by anaconda. The file is
XF86Config.org(original). When starting X the log-file XFree86.log.org
is made. Here I observe that insufficient memory is a problem among
other things.

The second configuration is downloaded from internett. After a long time
as was able to download a configuration for LTE 5300, but i was not
ok. I had to remove som items due to parsing error. The removed items is
market with two ##. There is also problems with this configuration due
to No devices detected. This second configuration have the files
XF86Config.ex1(example 1) and XFree86.log.ex1.

I feel that the second configuration is the best approach, and hope that
you could give me some help.

Did you try XFree86 -configure or xf86cfg yet? They're slightly
more insightful than Anaconda.

BTW, including your log and config files inside HTML isn't a sharp
idea. Just attach them as ASCII, or better yet, upload them and include
the URLs to save space.

Currently I have Red Hat Linux Rel.8.0. installed in a Dell Dimension

drive for Windows XP and a second one dedicated to Linux. The Video card
is NVDIA GeForce4 TI 64MB DDR and the monitor is a Dell 1900FP.

First of all, I'd like to mention that the system used to work just
 fine.

The problems began when accidentally I turned off the P.C. without
shutting down the system properly. After that day, every time I type
startx, the system displays the following errors:

 (EE) VESA(0): No matching modes
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error: no screens found

XIO: Fatal IO error I04 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0
 after
0 requests (0 Known processed) with 0 events remaining.

After trying to reconfigure xfree86 without luck, I decided to format
the hard disk and re-install Linux from the ground, but despite this
action, the problem remains. At this point I have no idea what to do.

That the problem persisted over a *reinstall* suggests strongly that it's
hardware (unless it started as a glitched Config file and *became* a
misconfigured one after the reinstall, which isn't completely beyond the
pale...)

It's possible, I suppose, that you got lucky with a glitch on the hardware
from the turn-off -- especially if the powersupply was more than usually
loaded because things were running when you shut it off.

You don't mention whether you see any problems under Windows...

Is there any chance at all you saved a Config and a log from before the
reformat for comparison purposes?

Cheers,

[XFree86] Problems starting X

2003-06-30 Thread antons
Title: Message

Hi
there!

My name is Anton.
I'm new to Linux - I heard so much forthis OSthat I decide to try
it. The installation passed successfully and I thought that everything is fine
until the reboot... The first time I had received error starting X Window... I
tried one more time and then everything seems to be OK - I was able to start in
graphical mode (I did it few times as a matter of fact)... And then, till now -
two weeks now - I was not able to start Red Hat 9 in graphical mode. I asked
some friends for help but no one was able to help me. I red some FAQs,
forumsetc. but without success. Ihave to say that every other things
which I try worked. During the installation the anaconda found my video card and
my monitor and what it types was write for them (so I did not changed the
parameters set for them from installation program). I have to say also that the
mouse is moving. I attach the log and config files...
It seems that
something is wrong - but I can not understand what exactly!!! I have received
error that the X server was not configured properly - but I did everything
wright and as the installation advised me!

Please help
me!!!
Sincerely yours -
Anton Slavov

[XFree86] Problems Starting X!

2003-06-23 Thread Brian Black

Hello, I am having
trouble starting x and I cannot figure out the problem, I have a PNY
GeForce FX 5200 agp board and not to sure about the specs on the card but I
could get them if I needed. I am getting an error saying "Fatal Error: No
Screens Found" I am pretty sure my config file is set up right and I am wanting
to use the nvidia drivers from the ports collection. below is the output
my output from dmesg, for the agp0 it reads "VIA" which don't seem right.
Also I have my log file and my config file. could someone help shed some
light on my problem please. I am sort of at intermediate level, I
understandthe conceptbut still cant figure out this problem.
So thanx for the help in advance

2003-06-23 Thread Mark Vojkovich
You need to run the nv driver that came with XFree86 4.3
(should work fine). NVIDIA has yet to release XFree86 drivers
for FreeBSD that support GeForceFX.

Mark.

[XFree86] Problems with X-Server

2003-03-13 Thread Johannes Schultze
Hi,

I have some problems with my new Linux. I installed
RedHat 8.0 and I'm not able to get my X-Server
running. The system should be able to do it, because
Suse 7.3 had no problems. The graphic-card is a 'ATI
Rage 128' and the monitor a 'Samsung Syncmaster 700p
Plus'. Both of them are detected without problems
during the installation, and a friend told me the
ATI-card should be quite well suported.

Whenever I try to change to the 7th console (I'm new
to Linux, but it seemed to me that this is always the
graphical console), I see some short flickering of a
graphical screen, like when you put a beamer to a
laptop, and then the monitor tries to get a right
image but doesn't seem to get one.

I tryied to reconfigure it with xf96config, which has
absolutely no effect, and the redhat-config-x86free
(something like that) won't run, because it seems to
me that it want's to switch to a graphical screen.

So, I'm quite at the end with my Ideas... can anybody
help me?

Thanks,
Johannes

manual.

So far, so good.
