[Xpert]xmove without xmove?

2002-10-06 Thread vic

I'm curious whether the functionality of xmove and
similar programs -- redirecting an X client to another
display -- can be reproduced without witnessing the
creation of the client's state in the server.

Is it possible instead to recover the state just before
redirection by querying the server and perhaps
rummaging through Xlib's data in the client?

The point of this would be to create xmove
functionality without the hassle and latency of running
clients through a pseudoserver.

Thanks.

[Xpert]SPARC Solaris: sunffb invisible, PGX32 colors messed up?

2002-10-06 Thread Matt Behrens

I've recently been trying to get 4.2.99.1 up and running on my Ultra 10.
I normally have a 3-head config with two PGX32s and a Creator3D. My
two problems (yes I know this is unsupported):

1. The Creator3D never shows up in the configuration. I tried adding a
device section for it per ML archives:

Section Device
Identifier Card3
Driver sunffb
EndSection

but the device is simply loaded and unloaded without ever being
attached. Not sure what BusID I should use, if any, to get this thing
working.

2. The PGX32s seem to have some kind of colormap corruption; gray bars
turn yellow. I tried them both inside and outside of a layout with the
Ultra 10's onboard Mach64, with the same results. (Incidentally, the
Mach64 works great, but has really piddly video RAM.)

Any ideas would be very much appreciated. I really hate Solaris' Xsun...

I'm attaching XF86Config and XFree86.0.log from my 2x PGX32 + onboard
Mach64 configuration.

Re: [Xpert]Getting 8500 in 3d Working well

2002-10-06 Thread Nelson Bartley

You're right.

After I examined my XF log, It shows that I have HorizSyncs too far out.
I've attached both of my XF86Config-4 files, as well as my XFree86.0.log
file. I'm attempting to use the same file for both my standard radeon
based config, as well as the flgr config, with the appropriate
modifications for the Firegl.

I wonder, Does anyone have a working 1280x1024 @ 75hz modeline that can
be used w/ the firegl driver?

You may want to post the /var/log/XFree86.0.log and perhaps it will shed
some light on why your cannot do higher res. Perhaps your Monitor section
 has too restrictive HorizSync/VertRefresh values.

[Xpert]kdrive

2002-10-06 Thread Carlos Dri

Hi,

I've posted a question about colormap in this mailing list, regarding tinyX.

Well, I've compiled, runned it, Xfbdev -broadcast, and I get the *wrong*
colormap. Compiled it for ARM and x86 target, tested in ARM hardware and
Athlon, both get the same *wrong* colormap.

I got a snapshot from my ARM hardware (the attached one) to send it to this
mailing list with the hope to show you, guys, the fancy colors I get.
Stupid, stupid thing, the indexes are ok, because I (and you) will be seeing
the rights colors. So, there's something wrong the way I'm getting the
colormap.

I tried to modify fbdevPutColors and fbdevGetColors in fbdev.c, but nothing
happends. Moreover, I can take out the complete code from those two
functions, and nothing happends.

My system is running Linux 2.4.13 with 640x480x8 framebuffer (microwindows
runs ok). I've got busybox with only one console, and when I start Xfbdev,
it runs in tty2 (I can switch back and forth from X and the text console
with ctrl+alt+F1 and ctrl+alt+F2).

I've tried a tip that someone dropped to this mailing list, start Xfbdev
from a rc script, I did it, but it works the same way.

So, would any kind soul from this mailing list give me a hint, or something
to start with?

I want to spend some time trying to fix this (if there's something wrong
with kdrive), but I need something to start with. I would really love to do
that. But... there's no doc about kdrive (well, I couldn't find it anywhere
in the web), so, I need some help from you guys...

TIA

Carlos.

[Xpert]a couple of xprop 1.6 bugs

2002-10-06 Thread Mihael Hategan

1. Setting a property of cardinal type will not work (for some unknown
reasons it uses XA_INTEGER for both i and c types)
2. You can set a property to ONLY one value (not a list).

The following patch solves the two problems. When suplying a list of
values, it should be quoted and comma separated.

I think that this sets the road for shell-scripted window managers.

[Xpert]dri on the intel i810

2002-10-06 Thread Michael Cardenas

Hello everyone. If you respond, please cc me as I'm not subscribed.

Attach: /root/XFree86.0.log.fail xfree86 log

I'm an engineer at Lindows.com and we're trying to ship xfree86 4.2.0
with our next release. In testing, our qa dept discovered that the
intel i810 card no longer has dri acceleration since moving from 4.1.0
to 4.2.0.

I found that we were not using the updated kernel modules required for
dri, so I added those to our kernel.

Unfortunately, the i810's are still not accelerated. From looking at
/var/log/XFree86.0.log, everything seems to be fine, and it says
direct rendering enabled, but glxinfo says direct rendering: no.

I'm trying really hard to debug this problem and any suggestions as to
what the problem is, or how to debug it, would be greatly appreciated.

Attached are the output of glxinfo and xfree8.0.log.

thank you,

  michael

[Xpert]Updating of windows during window move/resize is slow

2002-10-06 Thread Jouni Tulkki

I have noticed that moving and resizing windows is very slow when using
window managers that update the window position/size immediately.
The reason for this slowness (I think) is that a huge number of
exposure events are sent to the windows that need to be updated.
On my machine (PentiumII 233 with 128MB memory and Matrox G400 with 16MB
memory) this causes updating chains that can take many seconds to finish
even when using relatively fast and well optimized programs like Netscape
4.77.

The problem is, I think, that exposure events are sent to windows
even when the previous exposure events have not been processed. This
causes exposure events to stack up. A smart client could ofcourse
check if there are other exposure events in the event queue and remove
them. Still I don't think this is the client's job and I haven't seen
any program that would do so.

A solution could be that the XServer (or maybe the client side library?)
combined the many exposure events in case the client doesn't have
the time to process all the events in time.

I've noticed this problem with XFree86 4.1 and 4.2. I'm not
sure if earlier versions have the problem.

I don't know how to do the changes myself but maybe someone knows.

Make sure that root has set
   ulimit -c unlimited
 (or similar for your shell).

There is also an option NoTrapSignals for the ServerFlags Section
of the config file, which changes when core dumps are made.
It may give better cores, but it can also mess up your console.

Unfortunately, I've tried setting the ulimit to unlimited everywhere,
but I still haven't received a core. Also, the error seems to have
changed: now I get a

Fatal server error:

message at the end of the server log. The complete server log is
attached.

[Xpert]Not matching pci device

2002-10-06 Thread Ron Gedye

Hello fellow newbies (and xperts),
I have not subscribed to the list so I'd appreciate a direct reply.

I'm Using redhat 7.2 on a older Dell PE2300 which has a built in trident
video card that is not supported.
I disabled that card and installed an ati rage 128, which kudzu found with
out an issue, but for some reason it wouldn't let me complete the xconfig
I ended up skipping it.

Now when x tries to load I end with this message:
(II) Primary Device is : PCI 00:0a:0
(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device
(WW) R128: No matching device for section for instance (BusID PCI 1:0:0)
found
(EE) No devices found

I believe, since the PCI 'slot' changed for the video card, it causes this
message.

How do I change the config to work properly? I've fished around in the
/etc/X11 dir but didn't see any tags that made sense.

Please help.

Thanks
Ron

[Xpert]regarding pixbuf depth of the window

2002-10-06 Thread Santhana Krishnan

Hi,

I am having a GTK+ application, which will be used to take graphics
snapshot of individual windows.
In the below code before taking snapshot, verifying whether the
depth of the window is zero or not.

  XGetWindowAttributes (GDK_DISPLAY (), GDK_WINDOW_XWINDOW (window),
attr);

/* Assumed Input only window */
   if (attr.depth == 0)
   {
gdk_window_get_user_data (window, (void **) widget);

if (!widget)
return;

window = widget-window; /* parent window of InputOnly Window */
x = attr.x;
y = attr.y;
}

In the above code i assumed always the InputOnly window has depth
zero. In this case i am taking the snapshot of the parent window of
InputOnly window and assumed the parent window will have depth non-
zero. Here my questions are

 1. Whether my above assumptions correct or not?.
 2. Is there any other chance the depth of the window is zero ( other
than InputOnly window).

thanks in advance,
Santhana

[Xpert]Hi...cyberblade 1400x1050 shift option

2002-10-06 Thread saul

HiI have read a posting that suggests there is a parameter to change the
horizontal shift of the display using the trident driver with a cyberbladeXP card
at 1400x1050 resolutioncan you tell me what the parameter is? I use
Option Display1400 to get the 1400x1050 res to work but encounter the shift
issue...I have copied the binary from alan's page just yesterday, will it include the
patch?

thanks,

saul.

-- crop --
I have made a fix where you can set the shift as an option
by hand. You can then email me the range of values which works
for you. I will collect the values take the one with the
largest intersect and hard code it in the driver.

This patch will be submitted once I find time. It won't
happen this week for sure. I'm on a large show doing a
XFree86 booth.

[Xpert]Monitor sync or display problems exiting dpms state GeForce2 MX/MX 400

2002-10-06 Thread fpn

Hi,

I reported this against Redhat 7.3 but is rally an X issue, so I send it
to you too.

The bugzilla url with the XF86COnfig and the X Server log is:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=70854

Description of problem:
Any of:
 xset dpms force standby
 xset dpms force off
 xset dpms force suspend

and then pressing a key to unsuspend result in the monitor not syncing
properly. (I don't know whether it is a real sync problem, but every couple of
lines are repeated on my Apple TFT).

But changing vt's via CtrlAltF1 and back via CtrlAltF7 restore
proper sync/make the display look good again.

(Turning the monitor off/on does nothing) Maybe it is not really sync, but every
~4-5 lines are repeated ~4 times and then the 4-5 lines you expect there are
repeated ~4times again...

How reproducible:
Always

Thanks,
 Florian

P.S.
I love X! Thanks for the great work!

[Xpert]Intel 82845G/GL Graphics Controller

Has anyone successfully configured an xserver for

"vesa" driver and a manual configuration.

Re: [Xpert]Display Alignment Issue

I already mentioned that I had reverted back to 4.2.0 as the result
of problems the CVS build was causing konqueror. I took your advice,
though, and again built from CVS tonight which seemed to do the trick
(and as an added bonus, konqueror still works).

The latest DRI 2D driver is still old X4.20 driver with some DRI related
changes. Do NOT install the latest DRI drivers after you install the XFree86
CVS server (the old DRI 2D driver will overwrite the new 2D driver). To
debug the problem, I'll need the complete log file for the X built with the
latest CVS code from www.xfree86.org. The server version should be
something like 4.2.99.1 or higher.

As I mentioned in my first post: I already tried the latest CVS of X
though it failed to solve the problem with the alignment and it caused
konqueror to segfault when ever I tried to browse the web with it (I

[Xpert]i810 DRM module for 4.2.0

2002-10-06 Thread Brian J.Conway

Greetings. I am using the DRM modules found at
http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/ to compile for use with XFree86 4.2.0 on
Mandrake 8.2 with a vanilla 2.4.19. On my laptop with an r128 chip, it
compiles and works perfectly, but on an i810 desktop it fails with the
following:

cc -O2 -Wall -Wwrite-strings -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align
-Wstrict-prototypes -Wnested-externs -Wpointer-arith -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE
-fomit-frame-pointer -DCONFIG_AGP -DCONFIG_AGP_MODULE -DCONFIG_DRM_SIS
-I/lib/modules/2.4.19/build/include -c i810_dma.c -o i810_dma.o
i810_dma.c: In function `i810_free_page':
i810_dma.c:298: structure has no member named `wait'
make: *** [i810_dma.o] Error 1

Is this fixed in CVS and would it be possible for the module source on
that page to be updated in a neat tarball fashion (it would be preferable
to CVS for myself)? Thanks in advance. Please CC me, I'm not on the
list.

[Xpert]hw supported transparent bitblt for mga driver

2002-10-06 Thread Thomas Sandlass

HaloO,

in the XAA transparent copy aka color keying is foreseen as
a driver option.

But unfortunately the mga driver has the NO_TRANSPARENCY
bit set in the ScreenToScreenCopyFlags. Looking into the
code of directFB or the DGA that implements this feature it
seems to be a straight forward thing for someone who knows
the matrox chips and the place where to plug it into the
current mga driver code.

My Intension for using this feature is to program an
extension that works like XCopyArea() but has got an
additional parameter for the transparent pixel.
With direct support in the driver this would be easy.
Or is there a way to call the internal function
MGA_BlitTransRect(), I mean without using DGA?

I need to copy an offscreen pixmap into another, and then
draw with Xlib more stuff on top and finally copy it into
a window. So in the end I want the functionality of
XDGACopyTransparentArea() with the parameter context
of XCopyArea()---namely GCs and XIDs.

Regards

  The command
  xgamma -ggamma 0.5
should make the screen less green. Try adjusting the value.

I see. I think a brightess adjustment would be more correct, dimming
the green component. I am going to solve this by replacing the
monitor. The greenish monitor is a Sony trinitron from Digital, while
all the others are from Hewlett Packard. Because of what you say, the
sixth monitor must be H.P. as well.

By the way, I calculated the optimal gamma to be 1.5.

I suggested 0.5 as a crude way of turning down the green;
this is a relative gamma; xgamma -rgamma 1.0 would make the red gamma
exactly the same as not using gamma correction in the server.
Ideally you would display red, green and blue ramps, measure what appears
on the screen, and use these measurements to calculate the data feed
into XF86VidModeSetGammaRamp, perhaps with different values for each
monitor, and re-measuring as the monitor ages.

Hi, I'm new to this area so if it's an FAQ, please point me to it.
Problem is: I want to run dualheaded config on my Linux (RH 8.0/XFree 4.2.0)
using Radeon 7500 + Monitor and TV. Currently situation looks like: I've
figured out how to configure X-Windows so when I have TV plugged in my PC
X-Windows still start up but, nothing more than that. Looking over the web
doesn't doesn't give me much - most of solutions are either for
dual-_monitor_ systems or nVidia-based. Figured out modelines for TV - still
doesn't work.

Maybe, somebody has sample XF86Config? Or nice documentation will be ok.

I want to install a terminal server on a PC without grpahics
card(plaesa don't ask why).I wonder if it is possible.

Yes.

If so, can anyone explain how?

Just disable the local server in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers (add a '#' in
the front of the last line) and then use the preferren method for your
OS to start xdm on your server. (/etc/init.d/xdm or such).

[Xpert]r128: ignoring APM

2002-10-06 Thread Hanspeter Roth

Hello,

I have an Ati Rage 128 installed with FreeBsd. When FreeBsd has only
been in `Textmode' the shutdown with poweroff works. Once Xfree86
had been activated the PC doesn't poweroff when shut down.

Now I've also tried a Mandrake from a Linux magazine. With Mandrake
poweroff is no problem.

When I compared the logs, I realized that with FreeBsd the statement
`(II) Open APM successful' is missing. And there are two `(**)
R128(0): DPMS enabled'.

With Mandrake there is something with `i2c' which is skipped in
FreeBsd.

How can I run the Rage 128 on FreeBsd with working poweroff?

-Hanspeter

I try to achieve a subset of what you want: simply getting the TVout
working with X :o). Using atitvout
(http://www.stud.uni-hamburg.de/users/lennart/projects/atitvout/) I was
able to see the Linux console on my TV, but with X I only get gibberish.
It seems to me that the ATI card (or driver) can't (or doesn't want) to
use the 13.odd MHz dotclock that's required for PAL TVs.

Maybe it's possible to let the card display each pixel twice (I'm not
looking for Doublescan == each line twice) thus effectively halving the
dotclock and then use 27.something for the dotclock value...

Can anybody out there give me some hints?

Re: [Xpert]Updating of windows during window move/resize is slow

2002-10-06 Thread Mark Vojkovich

On Sat, 3 Aug 2002, Jouni Tulkki wrote:

It is the client's job and any client that doesn't compress events
is poortly written. There's nothing the server can do about it, it
has to present the motion and exposure events in the proper order.
In the case of window moves the event is already sent to the client
and the X-server goes back to waiting on its file descriptors before
it gets the next move that would cause a new exposure. There aren't
multiple exposes sitting around in the server.

There are rendering schemes where clients don't even need exposures.
Consider rendering everything into a pixmap and setting that as a
window background. You wouldn't even get exposures in that case.
Some current apps are so dumb that they redraw the whole scene for
each rectangle of exposed area - they're not even compressing rects
generated from the same move. I don't think the server can be
faulted here. It's just that there are too many people writing
applications when they don't fully know what they're doing.

Re: [Xpert]nv driver crash on nForce

modified theirs. Try an official XFree86 4.2.0.

I just did, and unfortunately the behavior is the exact same.

Just to display my potential ignorance, what I did was to replace
nv_drv.o from the RedHat package with that from the binary distribution
at ftp.xfree86.org. I still get a hard lockup, and it seems as if the
log files that I am able to obtain reveal nothing at all. I guess they
are truncated at a more or less random point in time when the machine
hangs.

So... is there any way that I might try to look deeper into this,
preferably without having to rebuild X from scratch?

  Hi all,

this bug report has been posted by me before, but I unfortunately
got sidetracked and never got to follow up on it. My apologies.

Whenever I try to run the nv driver in 4.2.0 on my nForce-based
PC the X server crashes and locks the PC, requiring a hard reset
to continue, while the closed-source nvidia driver from NVidia
works perfectly. Because of the hard crash I'm not sure whether
the log file is complete, but it does not seem to contain any
  irregularities.

I'm running RedHat Linux 7.3 on an Asus A7N266-VM with an Athlon
XP1800+ and 1 GB ram. The behavior is exactly the same under RedHat
8.0, where the X package according to the release notes basically
is 4.2.1, even if the version number is still 4.2.0.

This problem might of course be a RedHat-ism, so I have reported
the problem there as well. Other people seem to have experienced
the same behavior on different nForce-based boards.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I might try to track this
one down? In case there is a need for it, I'd be more than happy
to provide log files and any other relevant information.

[Xpert]Lots of problems with Debian unstable on Matrox G200

2002-10-06 Thread Mukundan Sudarsan

Hi

I just updated to the latest Xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-1 and suddely my x
window systm won't work anymore. It was working with the previous
version of the xfree86 server.

I am attaching my log and the xf86config-4 config file. It fails with
the error
(EE) No drivers available.

I need to load the glx modules and hence running xserver-svga doesn't
seem like a good alternative.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

please help me with this. I am afraid of upgrading my xserver lest it
crash my system entirely.

Regards.

Thanx
Mukund
