Yes, 3D support will be in XFree86 4.3.0, if you can't wait for that see
http://dri.sf.net or http://xfree86.org/cvs/ .

[Xpert]Radeon 8500 driver. Open Source?

2002-12-29 Thread Brian Lavender
Is support for the ATI Radeon 8500 coming in Open Source?

I just installed the RPM for the ATI Radeon 8500 LE using the rpm from
ATI on Redhat 8.0.

fglrx-glc22-4.2.0-2.5.1.i586.rpm

I also found install notes for another rpm package, it looks as if the
support can be compiled from source, but I am just not sure.

Yes, you need a recent benh kernel.

Aha. I'll give that a try. I don't have the machine in front of me right
now, but I'm pretty sure the kernel was 2.4.20, pre-rc3.

Thanks a lot,

Hi Everyone:

I've managed to get XFree86 4.2.0 built and running on powerpc. Using

Has this been reported yet? Is there anything I can do?

[Xpert]Radeon 8500 Support

2002-10-08 Thread Jesse Gross

Hi,

I am thinking about getting a Radeon 8500LE 128MB and I was wondering
what the current status of the drivers are.

I saw that support for it is included in 4.2.0, although there is no
page specifically for its driver that I can find. I am mostly concerned
with 2D, since for 3D I will mostly likely reboot to Windows.

Can anybody tell me what resolution/colordepth it supports and is it
stable? Are there any other cavaets that I should know about?

If it matters, I am running FreeBSD-STABLE.

Thanks,

Jesse Gross

Exactly. I put these lines into the config file in an act of pure
desperation. I am not sure if this has really got anything to do with the
DAC being set to 6-bit mode (the XFree86.log file actually says
otherwise), but it would certainly explain why there are exactly 64 (2^6)
shades of gray.

Your config has
#Option "Dac6Bit" "False"
#Option "Dac8Bit" "True"
Since the VGA connector is giving the correct output, I don't think you
should need to uncomment these lines, but the DVI output is behaving as
if you had:
Option "Dac8Bit" "False"
or
Option "Dac6Bit" "True"

I guess that the DVI output isn't getting this right.
I don't have an 8500, or much time for this sort of thing, but *if* I
get around to it I'll see if it happens on a 7000 or I can see any bugs
in the code.

[Xpert]Radeon 8500 DVI display problem

2002-06-24 Thread Rene Puls

[Please CC any replies to me, since I am not subscribed to the list.]

Hello,

I am using a SONY SDM-M81 LCD panel together with a Radeon 8500 DDR card in
1280x1024 @ 24bpp mode. My XFree86 is version 4.2.0.

My problem is that when I display a color gradient like the following one:

http://www.lionking.org/~kianga/2/misc/gradient.jpg

on my display, it is displayed as on this photo taken with a digital
camera:

http://www.lionking.org/~kianga/2/misc/screen-shot.jpg

As you can see, the gradient shown in the first picture is absolutely
smooth (save for a few JPEG artifacts, maybe), while my display shows it
as if it had just 64 colors, producing lots of vertical "bars".

Mind you, the display is running in 24-bit color depth, so this shouldn't
really happen. What is kind of strange is the fact that this happens
*only* when my display is connected via the DVI connector of the graphics
board. If I connect the VGA connector to the second input of my LCD and
switch to it, the gradient becomes perfectly smooth. (No need to restart X
or anything.) After switching back to DVI, the color bars appear again. By
the way, this does not happen under Windows, so I guess it is not a
hardware limitation.

I have attached my XFree86.0.log as well as my current XF86Config. I posted
a similar message describing this problem more than a month ago, but
received no reply so far. I am kind of lost here, and would really
appreciate a reply, even if it's just saying that I should ask somewhere
else and pointing me there. :-)

Many thanks in advance,
Rene

One question regarding ATi's FireGL drivers with the
Radeon 8500 - is dualhead/Xinerama supported? (If not,
it's no big deal, I'll just do two separate configs,
one DRI and one Xinerama using different drivers...)

D'oh. Looks like I managed to confuse the 7800 thread with an 8500 thread.

[SIGH]

That certainly explains the significantly higher frame rates.

It almost works. You can configure the dual mode through a
GUI : clone mode, horizontal or vertical mode. The 3D acceleration
is available in dual mode, but in my case, I have
wrong colors on the second monitor in every configurations
I have tested (even in single monitor if I select
monitor2 as the primary monitor).

This dual mode is activated through specific option of the Fire GL
DDX driver, so there's no relation with the Xinerama option of
the XFree86 server.

The tcl driver on dri.sf.net gives me 2200 FPS on a 7500 if I turn on page
flipping. Did I meantion gears wasn't a good benchmark?

A lot is certainly due to the driver. The DRI CVS trunk has a new radeon
driver which utilizes the chips' TCL unit and can optionally use page
flipping, with that I get 1500 fps in 32 bit and more than 1800 fps in
16 bit with a 7500 Mobility in a PowerBook.

Not that glxgears is a very important or meaningful benchmark...

That is a significant improvement over the 7500 M7 LW which gives:

[default size]
4293 frames in 5.0 seconds = 858.600 FPS
4626 frames in 5.0 seconds = 925.200 FPS
4723 frames in 5.0 seconds = 944.600 FPS
4703 frames in 5.0 seconds = 940.600 FPS
4722 frames in 5.0 seconds = 944.400 FPS
3048 frames in 5.0 seconds = 609.600 FPS

[1024x768]
640 frames in 5.0 seconds = 128.000 FPS
643 frames in 5.0 seconds = 128.600 FPS
652 frames in 5.0 seconds = 130.400 FPS
644 frames in 5.0 seconds = 128.800 FPS

[1600x1200]
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.400 FPS
304 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.800 FPS

I wonder how much is due to the 7800 (is that mobile or desktop?)
being faster than the 7500m, and how much is due to the different
driver?

Wow it works, and it's damn fast!

glxgears gives these results :

11305 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2261.000 FPS
14153 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2830.600 FPS
14106 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2821.200 FPS
14142 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2828.400 FPS
13498 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2699.600 FPS
2121 frames in 5.0 seconds = 424.200 FPS
2119 frames in 5.0 seconds = 423.800 FPS

The last two values are obtained in full screen 1024x768.

Thank you for the hack.

2002-06-18 Thread Johannes Rath

Fabrice,
the FireGL driver does not enable bus mastering on the graphics card, but
this is essential. So you have to do before starting the Xserver with setpci
by setting bit 2 of the command register-

E.g.
as root:

setpci -s 1:0.0 command
0183
setpci -s 1:0.0 4.L=0187

I tested it.

This driver does not work for me (Tyan Thunder dual Athlon MB/Radeon
8500). The Xserver is incredibly slow in both 2D/3D when DRM is
enabled. It looks like every framebuffer area copies fail in
this mode. It sounds like an AGP problem. ATI includes a customized
agpgart driver, which fails to init. The regular agpgart module is then
loaded, but its use counter remains at zero. Booting with mem=nopentium
doesn't help.

So I'll personnaly wait for the open source DRI driver for this board :-)

[Xpert]Radeon 8500 questions

2002-06-13 Thread Ryan Lovett

I'm having a couple of problems with a Radeon 8500.

Dual head:
With 4.2.0 and CVS, Screen 0 is always set to the DVI and Screen 1 is always
set to the CRT no matter what I try in the XF86Config-4 file. This causes my
15" to try to display 1600x1200 and my 19" to display 800x600 unless I bow to
the restriction in the config file. Is there any way to force Screen 0 to the
CRT? I've tried the CRTScreen option, fwiw.

Xv:
I'm unable to get Xv applications to work properly with my Radeon 8500. I've
tried XFree86 4.2.0 and CVS with the both the radeon and ati drivers, and with
4.1.0 with the firegl drivers. xvinfo reports that 4.2.0 and CVS have Xv
support, but applications have trouble with it. xine and mplayer display a
black box with a blue band down the left side. I thought this might be related
to dual-head issues, but the same thing happens with a one monitor (CRT or DVI)
configuration. How can I get Xv to work?

My experiences are similar to this person's:
  http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/xpert/2002-June/018062.html
except he was able to get Xv to work on his primary (DVI) display.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
Ryan

Hmm,

I bet ATI would be interested to know that their driver doesn't work with
AMD's Chipset. They would probably want to fix it. Most likely their AGP
driver needs to have Irongate support added like the linux did.

Look at the server log?

See http://xfree86.org/current/XF86Config.5.html (or man XF86Config or
XF86Config-4) about the Screen directive in device sections.

[Xpert]Radeon 8500

2002-04-21 Thread Pranay Kumar

Hi all,

My setup.. Linux 2.4.18 (built) with X 4.2.0 (built). ATI.2 drivers on a
Radeon 8500 card. The card has a vga and a DVI output. Both the heads by
default are in a clone configuration (right from boot time I see the
same things on both heads). I have a few questions:

1) When I run xvidtune I get a floating point exception. Why?
2) How do I check the refresh rate and the clock rate?
3) How can I run the two heads as sperate screens. I tried duplicating
the screen section in XF86Config-4 but no use.

Does the X 4.2.0 support the S-Video output on the
Radeon 8500? If it does, can someone point out how to
configure X to enable this support.

If X doesn't support this, is there another
alternative
that does? Any thougths, ideas appreciated. Thanks.

I couldn't find the benchmarks there. It must be somehwere in arkiv.
Was this with their newest update, which fixed several bugs?
I tested their driver with a Radeon SDR and an MGA-550. I found
some bugs (especially with stereo) which are fixed in the newest version.

My impression was that it has many fewer bugs than XFree86, but
also has fewer features available, but I didn't do thorough testing,
judst tried a few programs that I am interested in using.

Xig will give you updates, but if you buy a different video card,
you'll have to buy another server.

Bingo, that is your CVS checkout is probably from before it was
disabled.

About getting it working, I'm afraid it's not just a simple thing to
fix. The 8500 has a different 3D pipeline than the older Radeons,
without documentation about it and some 3D driver experience you're
gonna have a hard time. That's not to say you shouldn't try, but you've
been warned. :)

Mike - I have not forgotten about you, I just did not have a chance to
look at the logs you sent me thoroughly enough. I have not heard from ATI
about spreading the docs around either - they seem really busy.. On the
positive side they found TDA9886TS datasheet for me so TV-in support for
8500DV has moved forward a notch further. I have not idea why it is so
hard to get this datasheet from Philips (I even tried to call local
representative who proclaimed the chip discontinued..).

But have you actually tried running a client, e.g. glxgears? You should
be prepared for a hard reboot when doing so. ;)

DRI on the 8500 has been explicitly disabled in CVS because it's not

This msg dose not in any way have the understanding to get quake3 running on

A while back I got some instructions from Vladimir on how I could help with
Radeon 8500 DRI code. At first my PC would just reboot, but after changing
some BIOS Settings that has changed. I had my AGP Aperture size set to 512 MB,
I have 756 Megs of ram so I thought that was in the ball park. Now that I have
changed that setting to 128 MB. I don't really know what Vladimir meant by
CCE, CP and indirect packets, but glxinfo reports Direct Rendering=Yes.

If any one wants logs, I turned on ring debug and so fourth, drop me a line.

2D support is working in cvs trunk. Directions to build and install are
at http://www.xfree86.org/cvs/ . I believe Mike Harris also has _highly_
experimental packages against 4.1.99.3 in his people~ directory. He's
usually around in #xfree86 on irc.openprojects.net, so ask away.

[Xpert]Radeon 8500

2001-12-22 Thread John Goodyear

Hi,
I've recently bought a Radeon 8500 and upgraded my linux installation to
Redhat 7.2 hearing that XFree86 4.1 supported the Radeons.

When the X-Server starts, it says that it doesn't recognize my card.
During the process, it spit out several other Radeon strings that it
supported, but the 8500 wasn't one of them.

The ATI page pointed to the DRI site as a source of Radeon support, so ...

What's the easiest way to get X up using my Radeon 8500? I'm not
necessarily looking to get all of the DRI features running right away.
That can come later. Right now,
I just want to get X up.

Thanks

John Goodyear

[Xpert]Radeon 8500 and DRI+GLX ?

2001-12-20 Thread Thomas Bruckschlegel

Hi!

I've compiled the lates CVS, my radeon 8500 works well, the DRI + GLX are
loaded+enabled and the XFfree86.log shows no errors!), but when I try any
OpenGL app, my system crashes.

Is the DRI + GLX support broken for the Radeon 8500 ?

Probably the radeon driver, sounds like its Xv support for the 8500
isn't fully working yet.

[Xpert]Radeon 8500 support - thanks.

2001-12-04 Thread Noah Romer

I just did a build from cvs and X now runs on my system w/ a Radeon 8500.
I just wanted to thank those who're working on it. I do have a question
about support for things like playing video (i.e. mpeg and/or avi files).
I noticed that there's not yet any DRI support for the 8500's (that I can
see), so I recompiled SDL to not use DRI and then recompiled my smpeg and
avifile libraries. However, when I try to play an mpeg or avi, all I is
get is a black box (offset slightly to the right of the window frame)
where there would normally be the video. I've tried this both w/ and w/o
DRI support in the SDL library and get the same results. Is this something
to do w/ the radeon driver, or should I be talking to the SDL developers?

Thanks.

FYI, the system is an Athlon system w/ Red Hat 7.2 install (no changes to
any of the video libraries other than those described above).

RE: [Xpert]Radeon 8500/7500 support

2001-09-20 Thread Michael Smith
Title: RE: [Xpert]Radeon 8500/7500 support

A patch was submitted today to XFree86 for the Radeon 8500, 7500 and Mobility Radeon 7500.  This support dual-head via Xinerama.

I have documentation and a test driver for these boards and could add
support, but judging from recent history in the ati driver, ATI seems to
be adding support for things themselves.  Can anyone comment on this?
Should I bother with adding support or just wait until ATI does it?

[Xpert]Radeon 8500/7500 support

2001-09-19 Thread Patrick McLean

Does anyone know whether there will probably be at least 2d support for
the Radeon 8500/7500 by the
time they're released (I am trying to make up my mind whether or not to
preorder one, but since I use
Linux 95% of the time (only windows for gaming and digital cameral
unloading) I don't want to buy one
until there is 2d support under XFree.
