Re: Media request: Upcoming article highlighting Xubuntu

2024-02-14 Thread Pasi Lallinaho

Hello Cristian!

Thank you for contacting the Xubuntu team about a possible article on
HostingAdvice.com and sorry for us taking so long to reply.

We of course do not have anything against articles written about
Xubuntu! However, the situation is (and has been for some years now)
relatively stale: no new big or exiting features are being added and
there isn't anything to report on the leadership side either. If there
was exiting news, they would very likely be changes/updates in Xfce.

That said, Xubuntu is still maintained to a reasonable extent: for
example, as implied before, new Xfce pakcages are being brought to the
Ubuntu repositories. Some other small tweaks and updates are being made
now and then. This is all done by a small group of people (depending on
how you count, somewhere between 1–5 people) who are all formerly very
active Xubuntu team members.

I don't know if the above piques your interest and/or bears an
interesting perspective to Xubuntu, but if it does or if you have other
ideas for an article, we would be willing to hear more.

Additionally, if you need more information (including an interview)
about the current state or the history of Xubuntu, please do not
hesitate to ask.

Cheers,
Pasi

My team is writing a front-page article about Xubuntu on your easy to
navigate operating system, and how Xubuntu provides a smooth experience for
those looking to maximize their system performance, and we would love to
conduct an interview to provide some quotes and insights for our feature.

We'd also be interested in covering any new product updates, features, or
initiatives that you would be excited to get in front of our 23 million
users. This is a non-sponsored, non-affiliate, editorial-style article for

Would a quotable source from your organization have 30 minutes some time

Hi Pasi,

I think that would be a great idea. Personaly, I like reading these AMA of
Reddit. It would be interesting to know more the Xubuntu's team. Questions
about your personal motivation of doing what you're doing would be
interesting to read ;)

I hope something like that will happen !

Re: Article series (continues?): The small details

2016-08-28 Thread Mark F
I love the idea. It reminds me of PCLinuxOS's monthly magazine.[1] There's
so much good stuff in there. How to use applications. It has an
"installment" feel to it that makes you look forward to the next issue. It
kind of reminds me of Ted Nelson's Computer Lib (from the 70s-80s) the way
it's wide ranging with recipes and crossword puzzles. If a novice followed
along, they would increasingly absorb more practical purposes as well as
tricks/tips to customize, fix problems, etc.

That's much content on a monthly basis is probably a lot of work. But, one
thing I would take from them is the way they make it accessible from their
main page. For example, I wasn't aware Xubuntu had the tips you linked to.
I would promote that from being mixed in with tedium and quickly outdated
news releases. Make it more like a magazine with some enduring value to new
readers.

Something I like about Mint is the way the user sees a "welcome" tutorial
screen on their first boot. IMO, Xubuntu should have that and refer people
to the recurring, subscribe'able magazine-like content.

I like how Xubuntu's tips are more topical. It's easy to see at a glance.
If a larger magazine format were used, I would try to list the table of
contents at a high level so people could scan through topics and know which
monthly "issue" contains something they're interested in. (PCLOS lacks that
higher-level visibility to the topics available.).

Article series: Ask Us Anything

2016-08-28 Thread Pasi Lallinaho
Hello,

during a marketing sprint with Lyz today, we discussed a potential new
kinf of article series for the website – one that would both keep the
content flowing and add a bit of "human" to the mix.

I'm sure many of you know the Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) threads. If
not, they are threads where the public (eg. anybody) can send their
questions and at a specified time, a celebrity (in the most various
meanings of the word) answers (some of) the questions sent.

Our idea is to set up something similar, but instead of putting one of
us to the spotlight, the team would be answering the questions as they
best see fit – eg. artwork people should likely answer artwork-related
questions etc. Along with questions sent specifically for this purpose,
we could peruse the many questions asked on the IRC channels (and more).
This way we would likely be able to gather enough questions for a nice
article once a month or two.

It would be also completely fine to accept and answer silly questions
like "Pie or cake?" This would bring the "human" side of the team up
even more. (Silly answers like "Smoothie" would also be accepted.)

Team members, what do you feel about something like this?

Other lurkers, would you be interested/excited to send questions and
read articles like this?

Two article series to lead to the 16.04 LTS release

2016-02-11 Thread Pasi Lallinaho

Hello,

in preparation for the 16.04 release, I've put up a draft for two
different article series:

1) Teams favorite media managers
Since 16.04 doesn't have a default media manager, it would be nice to
present some options people can find in the repositories, instead of
leaving them in the cold.

2) Small details in Xubuntu
16.04 is an LTS release, and for many, it's the first new release they
are going to upgrade to/install. A lot of things have happened in 2
years; this article series should highlight some new features that the
team has included in Xubuntu since 14.04. Additionally, even older but
lesser known features can be highlighted. The articles should be
relatively short but comprehensive, so we can only cover more or less
trivial things.

The details and further planning for these article series can be found at
http://wiki.xubuntu.org/website/series

If you have any ideas, feel free to reply to this thread.
(Alternatively, feel free to edit the wiki directly, especially if you
have ideas for the small detail articles.)

Additionally, team members should add themselves to the media manager
list so we can see what kind of selection of media managers we will have
and plan the schedule for articles.

Cheers,
Pasi

I've been reading a lot of stuff about the Xubuntu magazine in here. Where
can I get more information? Can I contribute to that?

P.S. Sorry if that sounds like a noob question.

When you have that many windows open there is no optimal layout of any
kind, in my view. But when you have a modorate number of windows
open(5 -10) the icon box is the best solution. The icons are big, easy
to recongnize and a glance is usually enough to identify the windows.
The gnome like layout already problematic with 5 windows open. You
have to read through the window tiltes to know which one is which one.
Usability research unequovically confirmed that visual feedback is
more efficient than textual one.

Well, I tried it, but I didn't really like it. However, I suppose the main
cause for this was because I wasn't used to it, I'm used to having
everything at the top or bottom. I could of course just use one bar with an
iconbox, but as that would be twice as high it is just as (if not less)
efficient as having two panels. Just my habits, I guess...
