[xubuntu-users] No Wine in Menu

2015-12-07 Thread Lee Gold
using xfce 4.12 and Xubuntu 14.04

I don't like whisker menu (it's backwards). So am using application
menu.

There is no Wine entry. How do I get Wine to show up?

It's a bug. But what's the fix?

Thanks.

[xubuntu-users] More Difficult to Dual-Boot Now

2016-01-05 Thread Lee Gold
Hi,

Just tried to dual boot windows 10 and Xubuntu on HP Pavillion 15
laptop. So I'm a bit behind the times - there's a new bios system,
something called UEFI and this laptop along with Windows 10 seems to do
everything to prevent being extensible and more useful by preventing a
dual boot. Tried everything I could to make it work.

So it's goodbye to Windows forever on this laptop - it's going to be ALL
Xubuntu !

Re: [xubuntu-users] Fwd: More Difficult to Dual-Boot Now

2016-01-14 Thread Lee Gold
I checked it all out, thanks.

After taking a good look at Windows10 plus the hurdles now to dual
booting; I set the bios to legacy and formated and put on only Xubuntu.

Xubuntu works good on his new laptop - the user is not complaining.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Fwd: More Difficult to Dual-Boot Now

2016-01-14 Thread Lee Gold
I tried virtualbox for Xubuntu on Win10 laptop. Worked fine, only thing
is the full screen option distorts things a bit, would an issue watching
a movie. But the other way around, win10 on Linux virtualbox might be
useful - if a website heavily uses proprietary protocols for vids or
presentation, then in that increasingly rare case you could get job
done. But there's Pipeline now and Hal can be used on Linux...

2016-01-14 Thread Lee Gold
Re USB:

May not be the issue you're dealing with but beware:

Newer laptops esp. ones with weirdly tiny ac adapter power supplys do
not have the power in their USB ports to drive certain devices. So let's
say you try a long-distance USB wifi adapter with a 20ft cable (w/ a big
integrated panel antenna). It don't work - a total mystery since the
chip's supported etc... so then try using it with a POWERED USB hub -
it'll work... just an aside here...

[xubuntu-users] See desktop Icons with File Type

2016-02-19 Thread Lee Gold

Using 14.04. The desktop icons show the document content instead of the
file type. So in a small desktop icon I see a white launcher/icon for a
PDF document with tiny back specs - not what I want. I want to see the
PDF logo. This was in the past the standard way I'd see desktop items
and much prefer it. Searching through the settings but can't find how
 to revert? Thanks

[xubuntu-users] Icons show content - not usable for me

2016-04-15 Thread Lee Gold
Hi,

Using Xunbuntu 14.04

For example, a pdf document icon shows a minuscule replica of the
content vs, showing the red and white pdf logo which easily identifies
it as a pdf.

By default icons show a little picture or microscopic replica of content
- I do not want that.

I want the application or file type type logo to be the icon like it's
been in the past.

How?

Thanks.

[xubuntu-users] Scroll bars jump ahead too far

2016-07-16 Thread Lee Gold
Using 16.04

Might have asked this before. In the old days when you clicked the empty
area of the scroll bar it would jump either 1 page ahead or back from
the current position you were at. The new action seems to be to jump a
proportional amount depending on were you click in the empty scroll bar
space.

IMO I can not stand the new action, it screws me up. I want the old
action. I tried creating /home/giga1/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini and
adding the lines:

[Settings]
gtk-primary-button-warps-slider = false

and rebooted, but that did not stop it. Is there a way to have old way?

Thanks.

[xubuntu-users] Recommend Video Editing Software

2016-07-20 Thread Lee Gold
Hi,

Using 16.04.

Is there any video editing software that can do this:

I watch the video, and as I watch it I talk into a microphone and it
will add the sound WHILE I'm watching the video.

Is there one application that can do all of this? I know I can add a
sound track to a video from a file. But I''m saying that I narrate it
while I'm viewing it and the sound track is added.

Or, what's the best way?

Thank You.

Yes, I checked the All option - will check it again - it's not there.

Wine usually does some nice convienient things in the Xfce menu when
it's installed, I'd really like to have that again.

Is the Wisker menu causing the problem? I don't know...will try not
using Wisker if that's the issue.

in 16.04 a lot of packages I install are not coming up in the menu. I
didn't have this problem in previous versions. I can manually add it to
the panel menu, but if an older version worked I shouldn't have do it in

Hi

Using 16.04. WiFi does not work.

Network Manager...NM-Applet does not list the available wifi networks.
Wicd does not work either.

I have no idea how to fix. Tried sudo service network-manager restart
and sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service . did not fix it.

Works OK in Windows (dual boot).

Any ideas appreciated. Again the wifi networks are there but not listed
at all in NM.

[xubuntu-users] Three icons for same USB device

i have a usb device, it's a camera SD type card plugged into a card

unmount via any one icon they all dissappear/unmount. Wondered if
there's any fix? The SD is formated to FAT32. Never happened before. The

[xubuntu-users] Switching from Xubuntu

2016-09-18 Thread Lee Gold
Hi,

As the title indicates. There's just too many things happening to Xfce
that I don't like. One being the delete option in the drop down menu.
Who decided to make that appear by default? I just deleted valuable
information. It's too tricky for me.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Switching from Xubuntu

2016-09-18 Thread Lee Gold
Ignore me. Somehow I dragged my main Win7 profile to another folder
while browsing my dual boot Win7 from Xubuntu, which I found eventually.
I thought I had deleted it somehow. There's still nothing better then
Xubuntu...

Re: [xubuntu-users] Switching from Xubuntu

2016-09-19 Thread Lee Gold
Thunar of course is the app were it'd be nice to hide the delete.
"Delete" could potentially be confusing to folks coming from MS OSs were
"delete" means to put it in Trash bin, which is recoverable. Also, since
around 12.04 they turned of the authentication request when you access a
dual boot ntfs partition. Then there's the new scroll bar fanciness that
get's in my way bigtime. It's all good as long as you have an easy way
to turn these new features off. It happens a lot, it's similar to when
they changed the Firefox interface to look more like Chrome. I don't
like the look and feel of Chrome but there's a FF addon that reverts it
to the classic interface thankfully. Of course Xfce is brilliant...just
saying.

[xubuntu-users] Disable Images on Desktop Icons

2016-10-22 Thread Lee Gold
Hi,

Using 16.04. If I have for example a .png file on my desktop the icon
will be a thumbnail of the actual image. What I want is to have just a
generic icon that's the same for all image files. So I know from looking
at it it's an image, but I do not want a thumbnail of that particular
image file. I went into settings and unchecked Appearance> Menus and
Buttons> show images on buttons/menus but that's not it. I choose the
Humanity icons for the desktop. Not sure how to do this?

[xubuntu-users] Why is Changing Desktop Background So Difficult?

2016-11-04 Thread Lee Gold
Using 14.04.

Why are all image choices grayed out?

Why are "they" making this "rocket science" when it should be stone cold
simple???

Why the unnecessary complication?

2016-11-11 Thread Lee Gold
Thanks, I was interested in searching for a particular file. There's no
problem mounting, that works OK.

I've since realized that Catfish can do what I want.

[xubuntu-users] Stop Panel Menus from Scrolling

2016-11-14 Thread Lee Gold
hi using 16.04

If i hit the Network Manager in the panel it only shows a part of the
"dropup" menu and I have to hit an arrow at the top to see the rest.

I want it show all...everything, no scrolling, all the info . How to I
do this for all panel menus?

Thanks

Re: [xubuntu-users] Scroll bar behavior?

2016-11-19 Thread Lee Gold
In my opinion the complication that (is it GTK3 or Xfce that's doing it
?) with the scrolling in new versions of Xubuntu is nuts. There's also
the scheme they do now were they hide the scroll bar till you mouse over
it - I turn that off whenever I can.

So try RIGHT clicking in the scrollbar space instead of left clicking
your mouse or touchpad. That's supposed to do what the left click used
to do. Sometimes it moves up/down just one line other times it's been
the page up/down as expected.

A page at a time is how humans read so don't ask me why they did it and
why AFAIK there's no easy check boxes to configure it.
