Suppose column a has the names and column b the status, such as p or a. Now
use this formula in a cell to find out the number of students present:
=COUNTIF(B2:B11,"p")
Replace "p" with "a" to find out the number of absentees.

Use tesseract OCR. It is available for windows also.

I did not say ind senz ocr is bad. But you need good image for ocr.
For free ocr service you can scan the book ans send the pdf to us. We will
send the OCR of that.
Its as simple as that.

We do image preprocessing before putting it through OCR. Which is not
possible by our friends. Lot many times the pages would be tilted resulting
in poor output. I have been using indsenz ocr before anybody was selling
that in India.

If the accuracy of zoCR is good then why not use the those offered by Indic
Trust and if it converts any type of fonts to Unicode then even Jaws would read
it easily.
