Yes, I have backed up and restored two 40Gb NSS volumes with
client 3.0.1.8. Performance as normal, but it worked. I can't recall
the server version at the time as it's not my baby, but it was
certainly before the current 3.7.4.0, and probably a 3.1 version.

you can then (from the attached aix host) do a "mtlib -l/dev/lmcpx

less physical space

First you have to create an additional log volume by the dsmfmt utility.
Next you have to start your server manually by using the following command
to extend your log with the new volume:
