I've had similar experience. We send about 100 GB / day to our 3583 (4
drives). As far as I know no drive has ever cleaned itself. The library
has been in service since last October. But in general, drive cleanings
are rare on our system. We have a mix of 3570, LTO, and DLT media and

setup 3 schedules for DB backups..

there is no simple answer, it depends.
If you make two backups to a primary pool and just send one set of tapes
off-site it would expire.If you backup primary pool to copypool it is
same.
One method to retain "forever" first backup and expire next one (with
consequent ones) is to use two
I have had the same concern. I also have had two drives replaced because
tapes were stuck. It is an interesting theory...instead of fixing the drive
when a tape is stuck they just replace it. Definitely different from the

Does this apply to 3583's (or just 3584's). On our 3583 "autoclean" is
disabled and I don't see any way to enable it. When I've asked IBM h/w
support they said it can't be enabled for 3583 and that you should use host
cleaning (ie library will tell TSM when to clean.)

10 LTO drives that has been in service since September of last year. I've
got three cleaning tapes in the library, I move 130 GB of data per day --
and I haven't seen a cleaning tape used yet. I know the drives and tapes

pool CopypoolA keeps the data until it is expired. For some files this will
be never. 'Delete volume discarddata=y' is the way to go. Possibly
