I have a strange problem that I just noticed today - I have not seen it
happen before. TSM 5.2.1.1 on AIX 5.1ML4. I noticed that by tape to
tape backup was backing up more data than usual. My script issued the

One thing that appens during that time is that the TSM server is
downloading directory entries to the client, to sort through and decide

You are correct, there is no log information. What is happening is, as
someone here surmised, the DB is being formatted. I normally get
messages while it is formatting, if I remember right, but it does take a

I do something like this, but what I do in a script is, if the
reclamation threshold is not 100, and there is no offsite reclamation
process running, I lower the reclamaiton threshold by 1. I also have a

I'm sure you've checked this, but I get tapes that go into readonly mode
when they get a write error. Most of the time, I can just make the tape
readwrite again, and it goes on it's merry way.

We have given this a little bit of thought also. You would not need to
use type=file - just enlarge your current disk pool. Expire will age
the files out of there. The only thing to watch, is for it to be
getting full, and more disk needs to be added.

Do not extend the DB before doing the delete dbvol. The delete command
uses the empty, enextended space to move the data from the volumes to be

it, TSM needs unexteneded space to copy it in to. If you extend the db,

#2 is not the panacea that it sounds like. The dual writes to the
copypool's happens during session data transfer to disk pool - thus, you
must have a tape drive per session doing the dual write.

We had problems like this, that seemed to have no common thread, until
we realized that expiration was running at each incident. It was
suggested that we upgrade to 4.1.4.4, and we have been fine since (it
also fixed a 9840 tape drive dismount problem).

The other thing that has bitten us, is not the number of sessions, but
the oldest session. We have had backup sessions running 10 hours or
more, pinning log data. This pinned log data does not allow the log to
shrink, even if you perform a database backup.

One comment about the raid - we got away from SSA hardware raid after we
had two SSA card failures that caused the loss of the database. If I
were forced to use raid, I would have the second copy, and put the raids
on separate SSA cards.

We only had one card. I can't tell you exactly why we lost it. The
raid came up offline, and after hours on the phone with IBM, they said
basically, that I was screwed, the raid was toast.

My daily processing migrates my disk pool down to 10% full
(apporximately), so I know the next day by how full my disk pool is how
much I backed up. It becomes harder if your disk pool fills up in the
night, and start migrating while still backing up.
