I work for an IBM business partner and we service
the 3583 and 3584 throughout the US. 85% of of customers are using
one of these two libraries. Most customers are transitioning to
LTO2.
The only problems we have had was one of
our customers tried to use a lower quality tape.
Exporting your volume group is
the easiest way to move any storage that is on the ESS.
The only thing to watch out for as far as the TSM server is concerned,
is to make sure that you TSM server database and log files are not in
rootvg.

Take a look at the DELETE VOLUME command.
First take a look at the MOVE DATA command to move the
data off of the volume. Then you can delete the volume.
